Never Forgot ten
When you drop the name ‘Nikki Beach’ to anyone that’s well-traveled, they instantly associate it with glamorous events, chic beach vibes, music, fashion and fine dining. The brand has 14 locations across 11 countries and is famous for its plush ambience and high-flying clientele. However, not many know the real reason for the launch of the first Nikki Beach in 1998. In 1997, Nicole Penrod was only 18 years old when she was tragically killed in a car crash. A year after Nicole’s death, her father Jack (the entrepreneur credited with reviving Miami Beach’s flagging social scene in the 1980s) decided to celebrate his daughter’s life by creating Nikki Beach — a beach club for South Beach’s Bohemian community. Since then, it’s grown into a global brand with charitable and philanthropic endeavors at its core to support communities in need. “Nikki Beach was born to celebrate the life of my daughter Nicole,” explains Jack. “We didn’t have any plans for a global brand. However, the magic between our family concept and our customers created a demand. It was then that we decided to strategically expand Nikki Beach worldwide, while keeping the core message behind the brand (a celebration of life) by ensuring that each location combined the elements of everything that Nicole loved – music, dining, entertainment, fashion, film and art – into one.”

Think Cannes and chances are you’ll think Cannes Film Festival. Perhaps the most famous film festival in the world, the once-a-year event is quite literally the star of the big screen and no efforts are spared to make sure each year is bigger and better than the last. And it’s true; the Cannes Film Festival embodies everything that makes Cannes, Cannes. It’s glitz, it’s glam, it’s a veritable rich man’s – and woman’s – paradise. It’s been called the sister city of Beverly Hills, and not without merit; it’s the commerce and activity center of the French Riviera. There’s luxury hotels, fancy restaurants and upscale retail outlets. Every year sees more galas, regattas and international events. Streets are filled with supercars and superyachts jostle for space in marinas. Beaches are packed with beautiful people topping up their tans. Cannes is a millionaire’s playground. When to visit
Like the rest of the French Riviera, Cannes comes into its own at the height of summer. Granted, it enjoys a temperate climate year-round and you’ll never be disappointed with the weather, but the peak holiday season months of June, July and August are the busiest and generally considered to be the best. Expect strong, hot sun and temperatures in the high 80s, with sea breezes taking the edge off the heat. Evenings are warm and balmy, with gentle winds blowing from the moonlit waves along the shore. If heat isn’t your thing, you’ll still find plenty to keep you occupied in May and September.

France, Cannes is a relatively small 20 sqkm of beach, shoreline and city, with plenty of historical landmarks identifying its many influences over the centuries. The landscape is hilly and green, with stunning sandy beaches lining the coast, perfectly contrasting against the azure waters of the charming Mediterranean. Le Suquet is considered the Old Town of Cannes, with the area known as the Quartier des Anglais the oldest residential area. Once home to fishermen and their families, streets closest to the beach are now lined with upmarket bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques catering to the many wealthy visitors who flock to the city each summer. Off the coast, several small islands provide peaceful escape for those looking to get away from it all.
You won’t be shocked to discover Cannes – despite its past as a quaint fishing village – is an entirely modern, upmarket city. Five-star hotels are the order of the day; every designer label you can think of is represented and just about every Michelin-starred chef has an eaterie in town. The sparkling city is also home to epic nightlife, including celeb-studded spots like Baoli and Medusa. French is, of course, the language du jour but with the influx of international tourists from May to September, it’s no surprise that other major European language is spoken or at least understood. Much of Cannes is walkable, and for anywhere that’s just too much effort, taxis are in plentiful supply. Naturally, helicopter transport is also available, as well as boat charters and private chauffeurs.

What to do
With so many celebrities, film stars, musicians, artists and even royal families in town on any given day, it’s fair to say we’d understand if all you wanted to do was sit in an bar or cafe and people-watch. But if you can tear your eyes away, there’s plenty to see and do in this beautiful city. Take a stroll to the Palais des Festivals or along the sea front, including La Croisette, perhaps one of the most famous promenades in all of France. Marvel at the

Preface Destination many impressive buildings; including the Majestic Hotel, La Malmaison, the Russian Orthodox Church, the belle epoque Carlton Hotel and the more modern Palais Stephanie. Visit the islands off the coast; plenty of local firms will organize a boat trip for you, whether it’s a quick hop over for a look or a relaxing full-day excursion. The gorgeous island of Saint Marguerite is the largest of the lot and, if you don’t want an organized boat trip, there’s a regular ferry that runs from the main harbor every 15 minutes in the summer. A far cry from the glitz and glam of Cannes, Saint Marguerite is a small, pineand eucalyptus-covered island dotted with beautiful coves. Back on shore, other mustsee sites include the village of Saint Paul de Vence and Eze. Fancy a hike? Visit Le Sentier du Littoral at Cap DÁntibes for stunning views and a breath of fresh air. When is comes to trying local flavors, be sure to tuck into the local Bouillabaisse, a French fish soup. Arts and culture is well represented in Cannes, with plenty of galleries and museums. At the top of Suquet Hill you’ll find the Musee de la Castre, an 11th-century pile once the land-based headquarters of the monks of the Lerin Islands and now home to a rather eclectic collection of ethnic art. Trek the almost 110 steps to the top of the tower and you’ll find the views utterly breathtaking.

When breakfast, lunch or dinner are prepared by an Italian chef who goes by the name Alessandro Pizza, famous for his truffle quesadillas, you know you’re in for a real treat. The 46-year-old is head honcho at Nikki Beach Saint Tropez and when this guy is hob-side, culinary sparks fly. The British-Italian has come a long way, both professionally and gastronomically, and a culinary experience with the chef whose restaurants are frequented by the crème de la crème of the food world should not be missed. From signature Nikki Beach dishes, dinner favorites and real-life kitchen disaster stories, Mr Pizza spills the proverbial beans. Why is being a chef at Nikki Beach different from anywhere else in the world? The vibe that surrounds the location in full season is not often experienced anywhere else in the world. It’s very special. What’s your regular comfort meal? Pizza! But it has to be good pizza, obviously! What’s the signature dish at Nikki Saint Tropez? Customers here love our chicken satay and the Angus beef sliders, but the calamari plancha and the watermelon and feta tartare have been extremely big hits this season.

Kitchen disaster stories are always interesting? In 2002, I was given the responsibility of making dessert for the 4th of July bash. I went for an American chocolate brownie but messed up the recipe and the thing came out harder than a bar of chocolate. Needless to say I worked very late that night! What is the most essential item in your kitchen? A set of scales; I learnt that after my brownie incident!
PREFACE Interview the dish. If someone cooks for me, I like them to cook something they enjoy making, as those are the dishes that come out the best. When did you realize cooking was your passion? I was 16 and working weekends at a local Italian restaurant in my home town of Cambridge. One day the owner taught me how to make Italian gelato. The taste of freshly made ice cream is unforgettable. I enjoyed the experience so much I decided to enroll in an ice cream and pastry course in Florence, Italy. What is your biggest culinary guilty pleasure? Putting Parmesan on a seafood pasta.

How do you source ingredients? A lot of work is done in the months ahead of the season, meeting suppliers and tasting various ingredients. We like to use local products and our Provençal tomatoes, eggplant and zucchini are the best. Who are your kitchen heroes? I like old-school English chefs such as Gordon Ramsey and Marco Pierre White, as they influenced me the most in my early days in London. I cooked alongside Gilles Goujon and Régis Marcon at Nikki Beach Saint Tropez, and that was wonderful. What is your favorite dish to make and what is your favorite food to have someone else make for you? I always find making a risotto very pleasing, as you have to stick with it from start to finish, continuously nurturing

Who would be your ideal diner date? Someone who lets me decide the menu! What was the most useful thing a chef mentor taught you? My first chef boss, Steve Whitney at the Café de Paris in London. He taught me how to make classic sauces, which takes a lot of time and attention.
What do you think of celebrity chefs? Most celebrity chefs have got to where they are through hard graft and have usually worked in some top restaurants, so in general I have respect for them. I think a combination of workhorse and hotshot is probably a good formula. Have the tastes of customers changed during your career? Tastes haven’t changed but trends do. For instance, people are a lot more health conscious today so we tend to see superfoods such as kale on menus. What did you learn from your mother/grandmother? How to make the perfect Italian tomato sauce. Is there an ingredient you cannot work without? Salt. Are you affected by reviews at all? Not usually, as I think it’s almost impossible to please everybody all the time – especially when it comes to cooking.

PREFACE Exquisite Events family and friends and for Thomas, when looking at potential wedding destinations, Nikki Beach Saint Tropez was an obvious choice as he was a former member of the team. “It was an obvious place to unite”, says Thomas. As under French law, vows were exchanged in the legal part of the ceremony at the Town Hall in the centre of Saint Tropez, a famous building with striking salmon walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Bertille wore a beautiful short dress and had her hair braided in a classic bun and Thomas looked sharp in a bespoke suit without a bow tie or tie. It was a casual exchange and after the shower of confetti had settled it was time to move on to the main event at Nikki Beach. After a short break in proceedings it was all change and Bertille emerged wearing a dress by Inbal Dror, and Thomas a Tom Ford suit. The stunning ceremony, performed by Les Michaud, took place under the palm trees and poignant speeches made for some tearful and emotional moments. Cannes Film Festival You might know the star-studded spectacle, the little-known films that are catapulted to fame, the red carpet appearances and the Champagne-filled parties – but how well do you really know this artistic celebration of film? It was launched in 1932 by the French minister for national education at the urging of a prominent historian, perhaps as a way to counteract the Venice Film Festival, which at the time was producing proFascism propaganda films. However, as they say, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and the Second World War delayed the festival’s premiere until 1946, when 21 countries from the Americas and Europe presented their films at the Casino de Cannes. This year will see the 72nd iteration of this prestigious event, which showcases films from around the world in eight official categories, with plenty of other unofficial categories to give recognition to deserving films and all that goes into making a successful movie. Chopard is an official sponsor of the event, revealing a sparkling Cannes collection every year, as well as creating the prestigious Palm d’Or award. Jelena Noura “Gigi” Hadid was born in 1995 and raised in Los Angeles in gilded privilege by Yolanda and Mohamed, and then by her mother’s second husband, music producer David Foster. She started modeling at age two for Guess, but by the age of nine had packed it in. The focus for Yolanda had to be on school, volleyball and horse riding, all of which she is incredibly good at along with sister, Bella, who’d hoped to win a place on the 2016 US Olympic equestrian team before illness unfortunately intervened. Hadid featured on the cover of US Vogue with on-off boyfriend Zayn Malik in 2017 to the delight of fans. She has won the British Fashion Awards’ International Model of the Year honor and has been named Daily Front Row’s Model of the Year.

Yet she’s interestingly managed to keep both feet firmly on the ground – insisting that she still has a lot to learn about the fashion business. “At first, I wanted to prove myself so badly. I wanted people to like me,” she told a reporter for The Times in July. “Then you start to build up a wall out of fear of messing up. Now I’m learning to be assertive. I want
to grow and get better with every shoot.” Her interview with The Times revealed another side of Hadid who seems set on proving she is much more than just a pretty, rich kid. “I’ve been photographed my whole life,” she told the UK newspaper. “My mother was always on set with me and taught me so much. She understood what it was like and she never sugar-coated anything for my sister and me, so I think we were as prepared as we could be when we went into it full-time. Success to me now is doing something every day that I’m inspired by. I work my ass off. I’m exhausted, but I’m there in every picture.” Recently, she was the star of Prada’s SS19 campaign and featured in the brand’s short film directed by Will Vanderpeere. Hadid also stomped the runways for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Fendi, Prada, Versace, Isabel Marant and Off White. “It was always my parents’ money, and I was always going to get a job and live independently. I’ve paid my own bills since I was 18. My first Louboutins came from my first pay cheque,” she told The Times. But money isn’t something she, or her sister, have to worry about today, both having carved fortunes of their own. Hadid believes she can come from a privileged background and still be a hard worker and a nice person, something she has been reported as saying in a number of international publications. Last year, her net worth was estimated to be $13 million but now it’s reported to be as high as $29 million. The 24-year-old earned $9.5 million in 2018, according to Forbes’ list of the highest-paid models of the year. While she didn’t rake in as much as friend Jenner (who topped the list with $22.5 million), Hadid came in ninth place and was “only” $500,000 shy of Gisele Bündchen and Delevingne’s earnings. Today, Hadid represents something bigger than just another rich girl turned world-renown model. She represents a new, incredibly refreshing kind of celebrity, one born of social-media supremacy. And while the modeling career is a handy sideline, it helps that she’s also pretty good at it.

film meets fashion Cannes Film Festival One of the most popular and exclusive venues at Cannes Film Festival, Nikki Beach returns for the 17th consecutive year. The Festival de Cannes might be an occasion for the world’s film elite to premiere their latest films in a glamorous setting, but it’s also a place they can let down their hair once the red carpet has cleared. For every screening, there’s a star-filled cocktail soirée or late-night bash, bringing together some of the biggest names in the industry. A-list celebrities, movie stars, directors, producers, film critics and media descend on the famous Boulevard de la Croisette for the most lavish bashes of the season. Each year the luxury lifestyle event showcases the latest trends in fashion, music, dining, art and film. And there’s no better place to be seen than at Nikki Beach Cannes, an event playing host to the world’s most prestigious and recognizable industry names. For 16 years, Nikki Beach has held court at the Cannes International Film Festival, hosting premiere parties, industry events, charity galas and press junkets. This year’s exclusive pop-up 3.14 Beach, which is situated on Boulevard de la Croisette, just in front of the Carlton Hotel and the restaurant Le Voilier, was our best ever! The Cannes Film Festival 2018 saw the likes of top models Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner rubbing shoulders with Oscar winners including Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore, with perennial It girls Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny adding an extra layer of cool.

Bespoke bites did the rounds and Peirier Jouët Champagne flowed as CEOs mingled with the Hollywood elite, including actress Carey Mulligan and directors Terry Gilliam and Paul Dano, at some of the most exclusive evening bashes of Cannes 2018.
Just steps away from the Boulevard de la Croisette, Nikki Beach hosted the after party for Wildlife starring Carey Mulligan. The film’s writer Zoe Kazan and director Paul Dano were also present. The glamorous bash followed a warmly applauded screening of the film at the Palais Miramar. Having premiered at Sundance, Wildlife is an elegantlyshot, understated drama that explores the quiet unraveling of a dysfunctional family, set in 1960s Montana. The film is Dano’s first feature film as a director, a story, that he adapted from Richard Ford’s eponymous novel with wife Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick). Kazan co-wrote the script by freely trading it back and forth. Mulligan wore a dress from the Haute Couture Dior collection, paired with Jimmy Choo Hesper sandals. Nikki Beach officially conquered the 2018 Cannes Film Festival with its exclusive late-night party when special guests Chloe Sevigny and Joan Smalls arrived to spice things up. Smalls wore a purple mini dress designed by David Koma, artistic director of Thierry Mugler, while Sevigny wore head-to-toe Chanel, with a classic white ruffled blouse with black tie and miniskirt. Also present were Jim Chapman and Danielle Copperman, Jay Ellis, Laurie Calvert, Natalie and Dylana Suarez and Michael B. Jordan. The party continued until the early hours of the morning with an eclectic musical mix courtesy of DJ Jerome. After parties for other movies included Under the Silver Lake starring Topher Grace, The House That Jack Built starring Matt Dillon, Sofie Grabol and Siobhan Fallon Hogan and Leave No Trace with Ben Foster. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), in association with Participant Media, chose Nikki Beach Cannes as the venue for one of their largest annual events. Superstars including Cate Blanchett, Michael Shannon, Corey Hawkins and John Travolta awarded the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF), a non-profit organization dedicated to ending violence against children, a $500,000 grant. Support for entertainment-related charities, scholarship programs, and humanitarian efforts is a core mandate of the HFPA, which has already donated more than $30million in past years. “The members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association take great pride supporting nonprofits year-round,” said Meher Tatna, HFPA president.

We’re kicking off the 20 Years Of Celebration world tour at the Cannes International Film Festival in late May with an exclusive dinner and cocktail party hosted by Jack and Lucia Penrod. This soiree will feature a customized “living” ceiling by Sempre, with handmade and natural hanging elements meant to evoke a lush garden. Don’t worry if you miss it, though. Nikki Beach’s locations around the world will also be hosting a 20-year event during a peak time in their 2019 season to mark the occasion. Each celebration will salute Nikki Beach’s history and feature unique local tieins and our touring entertainment concept, the Ojibwa Dance Tribe. The Ojibwa Dance Tribe’s performance is inspired by native cultures and elements like the dreamcatcher and teepee. Chances are, you’ll associate Nikki Beach with the signature wood, white and turquoise, the inviting pool, the mixologists and the ambience. But high on your list is sure to be the music; Nikki Beach clubs around the world are renowned for attracting the cream of the DJing crop, who flock there to play the latest and greatest hits for guests to enjoy. And whether in the pool, relaxing on a sun lounger or at the bar, Nikki Beach guests will be tapping their feet to the beat, getting their groove on or dancing full-on in the water. From the day the very first Nikki Beach club threw open its doors in Miami, house music and Nikki Beach have operated in synergy. “Nikki Beach is cool, sexy and stylish, and house music fits Nikki Beach perfectly as it ticks all of those boxes,” according to DJ Antonio, who plays his sets at Nikki Beach Marbella. DJ FaDiese, from Nikki Beach Monaco, agrees. “At Nikki Beach we are always located on the beach or around a pool, and that’s the perfect setting for beach house music,” he says. While these days the DJ booths at Nikki Beach boast the latest in state-of-the-art music technology, most - if not all - Nikki Beach DJs remember the days when being a master of the decks involved hauling around crates full of vinyl records. And surprisingly, some still say this is the best way. “I always adapt to the equipment and the situation,” says DJ FaDiese. “I started with vinyls then adopted the CD trends and the USB keys. I’d recommend starting with vinyl.” Not many DJs would dispute the fact that advances in technology allow them to expand their repertoire, though. “First comes creativity, which is limitless, then you put the technology in place to make it happen,” says DJ Karlo Polliano of Nikki Beach Mallorca. “With today’s technology, you can do pieces

“Read the crowd & when you have their attention, take them DJ Mademoiselle Sabah, Nikki Beach Dubai on an amazing journey.” you never would have imagined in the past with vinyl.” No matter the advances in technology, for Nikki DJs, it’s what’s inside that counts. “Technology encourages creativity, whether it’s for a mix or for production, but the human part is always the most important,” says Nikki Beach Saint Tropez and Saint Barth regular DJ Patris Gero. “My goal is to give pleasure through playing music - the only thing that changes is the way of doing it.” It’s the same for DJ Mademoiselle Sabah of Nikki Beach Dubai and Ibiza. “All I can say is I deeply love every single track I choose, so I make it contagious to people around me,” she explains. “When you feel the music in your soul, then the magic happens.” As well as knowing how to get the best from the complex technology now involved in DJing, there’s a knack to reading the crowds. “As with any creative occupation, being a DJ involves a lot of improvisation,”
says DJ Mert Yenidunya from Nikki Beach Bodrum. “No matter how well you plan your playlist, if the crowd doesn’t feel it, then you have to improvise,” he explains. “Of course there are rules that have to be followed, and preparation and research are essential, but a lot of what we do is improvisation.” And along with reading the crowds comes a large chunk of responsibility, which is not something DJs take lightly. “When you’re a resident DJ, you’re the one who decides what the crowd is going to dance to. You’re the mood-setter,” says DJ Mademoiselle Sabah. “The first 20 minutes are the most important, as it’s when you feel the crowd and the vibe of the venue. The crowd is king. You’re here for them; you never know if they’ve been to other Nikki Beach locations before, all you know is they expect maximum joy.” DJ Uvis agrees. “The DJ is an integral element of any

- 197 party; when you’re DJing, you decide the mood of the party, you have the power to create atmosphere and make people happy.” This responsibility makes DJs pretty much the musical equivalent of social media influencers, according to DJ Francesco Santarini of Nikki Beach Versilia. “The DJ has the task of making the people in front of him have fun,” he says. “His or her influence is the most important; without the DJ, there’s no party, no fun. And you’re a good DJ if you have the right sounds, the right songs. You’re a very influential person!” Trying to keep everyone happy is tricky, says DJ Antonio, especially with the diversity you’ll find at a typical Nikki Beach party. “I always take into consideration there are people from all over the world and different age groups, “ he says. “You can find families, the young party crowd, even up to 80-yearolds, but they’re all there to celebrate life and have the best time. It’s the coolest crowd from all around the world.” And the coolest crowd doesn’t necessarily need a dancefloor to be able to party. “Nikki Beach guests come to celebrate life and want the best party ever,” says DJ Francesco.” We haven’t got a dancefloor like in a club, but here in Versilia we have a fantastic pool covered with white marble. We create a wonderful pool party.” Whatever’s on the decks, Nikki Beach DJs say winning over their audience is key, and it’s something that always happens thanks to the waves of enthusiasm you’ll find at Nikki Beach clubs anywhere around the world. Hearing the crowds say they danced like they’ve never danced before is proof enough for DJ Mademoiselle Sabah. “When you end up dancing in the middle of the guests, singing with them and dancing like no-one is watching, there is simply no better feedback,” she says. “A Nikki Beach audience is always ready to party and ready to celebrate life, which - for a DJ - is the best gratification,” says DJ Uvis of Nikki Beach Costa Smeralda. “Nikki Beach is simply a celebration of life! The customers at Nikki Beach know what they want; good music to allow them to have fun in the sun like no other place on Earth.”
