May I proudly present Nikki Style, the exciting next chapter in our Nikki Beach story. The best things in life grow and, if we’re lucky enough, the evolution takes us on a wonderful journey of discovery. This is certainly true of Nikki Beach, and this first edition of our redesigned magazine represents yet another new beginning for us. I would never have imagined 20 years after opening the first Nikki Beach in Miami in 1998, that I would be introducing a flagship product in our 20th anniversary year with Nikki Style, as well as a brand new beach club in Barbados. The year 2018 marks two tremendous decades of Nikki Beach glamor, fashion, relaxation and parties. I can say with complete confidence we have lived our philosophy to the fullest and truly celebrated life. With new beginnings come moments of inevitable reflection, and for me that takes me back to how it all

began. Nikki Beach was opened to celebrate the life of my daughter Nicole, who sadly died at age 18; and the brand’s growth symbolizes the years she has tragically missed out on. I keep the wonderful memories of an amazing young woman, and add to them with new experiences and memories made at Nikki Beach clubs and resorts all over the world. Nikki Style magazine is an extension of our ever-growing brand and a tribute to my beautiful daughter. When you drop the name ‘Nikki Beach’ to anyone that’s well-traveled, they instantly associate it with glamorous events, chic beach vibes, music, fashion and fine dining. The brand has 14 locations across 11 countries and is famous for its plush ambience and high-flying clientele. However, not many know the real reason for the launch of the first Nikki Beach in 1998. In 1997, Nicole Penrod was only 18 years old when she was tragically killed in a car crash. A year after Nicole’s death, her father Jack (the entrepreneur credited with reviving Miami Beach’s flagging social scene in the 1980s) decided to celebrate his daughter’s life by creating Nikki Beach — a beach club for South Beach’s Bohemian community. Since then, it’s grown into a global brand with charitable and philanthropic endeavors at its core to support communities in need. “Nikki Beach was born to celebrate the life of my daughter Nicole,” explains Jack. “We didn’t have any plans for a global brand. However, the magic between our family concept and our customers created a demand. It was then that we decided to strategically expand Nikki Beach worldwide, while keeping the core message behind the brand (a celebration of life) by ensuring that each location combined the elements of everything that Nicole loved – music, dining, entertainment, fashion, film and art – into one.”

Ibiza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its buildings, shoreline and sea life. The water around the island is so clear because of Neptune grass, a seaweed that keeps the water sparkling and untainted.

Prehistoric tombs, rock paintings and utensils have been found buried in the island’s soil, and the pine trees that guided the Greeks to the shore in 700 BC still dominate the land today. It was these travelers who named the islands the “Pitiusas,” meaning the pine islands. However, it was the 1960s that brought the hippies who began to colonize Ibiza and set creative roots. Following the death of General Franco in 1975, Ibiza was returned to a Catalan speaking territory and the popularity of the island continued to grow.
It soon became a major European holiday destination and, as a result, development soared. In 1999, UNESCO recognized Ibiza as a cultural gem, and Dalt Vila (Old Town) was declared a world heritage site.

The correct pronunciation of the island’s name is ‘Evissa’. The settlers who founded the island originally named it ‘Ibozzim’ and dedicated the island to Bes, the god of music and dance.

Winding country lanes and whitewashed hamlets, secluded crescent coves, pine-covered cliffs, wild orchids, olive groves and almond trees – it’s the Ibiza few take the time to see. Most of the island’s famous beaches and main towns – including the infamous nightlife of Sant Antoni (San Antonio) – are located in the south and west. However, beyond the southern borders – in the east, and sparsely populated north – things slow down. Take to the roads and drive past the giant banners advertising all-night raves and head for the east coast, home of Nikki Beach Ibiza. Explore sleepy and beautifully picturesque hamlets, quaint villages and pleasing scenery. One of the island’s most magical sights has to be sunrise over Es Vedra, the iconic 400m-high rock that soars up from the sea, just off the west coast. For those feeling adventurous, and fit, it is possible to circumnavigate the island’s 200km shoreline by kayak. It takes around a week and many companies offer guided tours. For a shorter trip, many beaches offer the perfect destination for a visit by boat. The rich marine life attracts divers, while the island’s magnificent lakes and shimmering salt flats are popular with both peregrine falcons and beautiful flamingos.

It’s no secret Ibiza is invaded every summer by revelers from around the world, in search of some of the best parties on the planet. However, even in the height of the clubbing season (May-September), it is realistically possible to avoid the parties and opt for a more chilled vacation at some of the island’s more chic and exclusive spots. Known for its world-class beaches, nightlife, weather, and shopping – the
number of tourists can be overwhelming, but the best time to visit is from May to October when high temperatures hover between the mid-60s and mid80s and the party crowd descends. The months between November and April are considered low season, when hotel rates drop along with the temperatures to more moderate low 60s. Most Ibiza club opening parties begin in May with the majority of the closing parties in October.

This spot claims the title of being Ibiza’s first hotel having originally opened its doors in 1933. It’s an elegant building situated in the heart of Ibiza Town and is listed as a UNESCO Property of Cultural Interest. Subsequently, great care has been taken by new owners, Curio Collection by Hilton. During the renovation and restoration, Spanish designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán stayed true to the hotel’s authentic style and managed to maintain much of its original charm. Monogrammed linenladen beds have to be a highlight in each of the hotel’s 33 rooms, all of which epitomize modern luxury. In 2007 the Ibizan government stated that all new hotels in Ibiza had to be Five-star. This was great news for high-end tourism, and really forged a future for Ibiza as a luxury destination.

Only 25 minutes away from Ibiza’s southern madness, this little gem boasts one of the best views in the whole of the Balearics. Perched dramatically over the sea, it’s the cliff side position of the Hacienda Na Xamena that makes it stand out from the crowd. It is stunning. Indian and Indonesian furnishings are used liberally throughout, along with many Oriental artefacts, giving the hotel a particularly unique feel. But don’t worry, there’s still a hint of Andalusia in the interior courtyards with palm trees and a covered swimming pool. Pine trees line the way to the hotel, creating a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the main town, as well as it being a retreat for celebrity royalty. Take a break from the beats and wander the streets of Old Town in Ibiza, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a treasure trove of history. The city’s Old Town is a distinct part of the island, home to the fortified citadel of Dalt Vila, an old fishing area just below, and the main drawbridge called Portal de Ses Taules. Cobbled streets with lanes leading in all directions weave below pretty, whitepainted houses and buildings. At night the area comes alive for the nightly hippy market, which even if you’re not in the mood to shop, is a place with a constant buzz. Pick up souvenirs or just stroll around and soak up the atmosphere. But it’s Dalt Vila that draws the crowds. Founded by the Phoenicians more than 2,500 years ago, it still has people living within its walls today. A well-established and informative museum displays artefacts from various periods of the island’s history, including Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman. If it’s a pre-club drink you’re after, buzzing music bars line the harbor promenade, which was remodeled in 2015. Sit back, breathe in the fresh air and swoon over the majestic yachts moored nearby.

Cofounder Dawn Goldworm is the “nose” behind the exclusive new fragrance called Saint Tropez, which is named after one of Nikki Beach’s most famous locations. It’s a Monday afternoon and I’m asking Kate Moss why she thinks she’s stayed at the top for so long. “I don’t consider myself a rule breaker,” she tells me. “I just follow my instincts and there’s absolutely no agenda. It helps that I still really enjoy modeling even after all these years.” Moss is at her modeling agency the Kate Moss Agency, in Soho, London, which she launched in September 2016. She’s wearing black jeans, a plain T-shirt, a Saint Laurent blazer and Alaïa boots. “These are the basics that I always reach for,” she explains, “After so many years, I’ve realized what [clothing] I feel comfortable in — there’s nothing worse than feeling restricted in or conscious of what you’re wearing.” No surprises there. But what is striking for a supermodel, who has embodied the phrase “style icon” for almost three decades, is that she wears very little in the way of makeup and, I soon realize, has a refreshingly low-key attitude to beauty. Born and raised in Croydon, Moss was discovered in 1988 at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Management, while at New York’s JFK Airport with her father. But it was when late photographer Corinne Day shot a series of images of her for The Face magazine in 1990 that Kate’s look signaled a change in what the fashion industry wanted. The pendulum swung away from the curvy, Amazonian models of the late ’80s (think Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford) to the waifish grunge look epitomized by Moss in the early ’90s. Moss fronted a Calvin Klein underwear campaign alongside actor Mark Wahlberg (then the rapper Marky Mark); while

In 30 years, Moss has fronted campaigns for almost every luxury brand, including Chanel, Dior and Burberry, as well as gracing dozens of magazine covers. However, at the Versace show at Milan Fashion Week 2017, she was noticeably absent from the lineup of supermodels ending the show, which featured Crawford, Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Carla Bruni. “I thought the girls looked amazing,” says Moss. “Donatella paid the perfect tribute to Gianni. I was away on a trip so missed the fun, but seeing the show brought back such great memories.” Yet at the present, Moss has never been more in demand. There have been deals with beauty brands in the past, most notably high-street giant Rimmel, but she’s now the face of upmarket Japanese beauty brand Decorté, which has just launched its line in Selfridges stores. But as we all know, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Moss. There were the drug accusations that prompted several brands to drop her as a campaign model, although no charges were ever upheld. And there were the relationships: Johnny Depp, whom she dated for four years from the age of 20; Jefferson Hack, father of her 15-year-old daughter Lila Grace; Libertines frontman Pete Doherty, whom she dated for two years; and Jamie Hince, the Kills guitarist she met in 2007 and married in 2011 in a beautiful English country wedding, wearing custom Galliano and with 15 bridesmaids (the couple divorced last year). Currently, Moss is said to be dating 30-year-old photographer Count Nikolai von Bismarck. She famously did her best to not give interviews for years, becoming perhaps the most famous enigma in fashion. And even today, very little of her personal life makes it into the public arena; especially interesting in a time of social-media oversharing, which Moss isn’t involved with. She doesn’t even have a personal Instagram account, which

is as bold a statement as they get in the fashion world. “The whole modeling scene is completely different to when I first started out,” she says. “Everything now is so instant with digital photography and there’s no mystique. ” She’s still very keen to keep her personal life as private as possible — there are resolutely no questions allowed that are directly about Lila Grace — but occasionally we get a glimpse. “I like to live a normal life away from work,” she says. “And it’s really important for me to have friends around me who go way back. I like hanging out together with my friends and our children who have all grown up together, and we love holidaying together too. It makes it all fun.” Moss is godmother to Iris Law, the 17-year-old model daughter of her close friend Sadie Frost and Jude Law. I do chance one question, though: Lila is around the same age Moss was when she began modeling. Does this give her a different perspective on just how young she was when she started out? “Yes. I was very young when I started modeling so I really support recent changes in the industry to

protect the wellbeing of models,” she says. “It’s something I feel passionately about the models we represent at my agency: I don’t want them to feel pressured in any way.” So what is the secret to Moss’s longevity? “Setting up the agency and my role as an editor for British Vogue has also given it a new dimension. [Moss has been contributing fashion editor since 2013, and has just been made a contributing editor.] It’s great being the other side of the camera and helping develop new talent. I’m very lucky to have worked with some of the best photographers in the world and the best creative teams.” Of course, Moss is a supermodel and, of course, she has that bone structure. But pre-modeling, her first introduction into makeup was much like any other child of the ’80s — Rimmel lipstick in Heather Shimmer and Anaïs Anaïs perfume. She now just relies on a good cleanser and face cream to keep her skin in check, rather than a lot of cosmetics — she just has on a little bronzer and mascara today. “Even though I’m low-maintenance, I do still like a facial and massage when I can.” And her biggest beauty tip that she’s learnt from all her years of modeling? “The ice plunge is the best trick! Fill a sink with ice cubes, cold water and slices of cucumber and hold your face in for as long as you can. It instantly reduces puffiness and tightens up your skin.” So what does she think about the beauty ideal so many social media stars now push on Instagram — the full-on makeup, heavy contouring and selfie-worthy looks? “It’s quite amazing what some of these girls can do,” she says. “They use really professional techniques to transform features, but it’s not an everyday look I go in for. As I said, I don’t like selfies.” At 44 and going into her third decade in the spotlight, she seems thoroughly normal: “My perfect weekend is in the country,” she says, “walking with the dogs, doing yoga, cooking a roast dinner and catching up on the TV I’ve missed in the week.” But there’s still the Kate Moss we all think we know in there, somewhere. Pressed about her style outside of the off-duty uniform of skinny black jeans, T-shirt and blazer, she tells me, “At night it’s heels and either a super-short dress or a low neck, but never both.” Style advice from one of the greats.

Today, Nikki Beach is known as that glamorous beach club with the fantastic music in hotspots such as Miami Beach, Saint Tropez, Saint Barth, Dubai and beyond. However, the Miami Beach-based hospitality company started modestly and organically as a butterfly garden and café, a tribute to Jack Penrod’s departed daughter, Nicole. In fact, Nikki Beach wasn’t supposed to be a brand at all. “The building of a garden by the sea was my therapy to be able to cope with losing my daughter Nicole,” recalls Jack Penrod, founder and owner of Nikki Beach. “My wife Lucia created a very active butterfly garden where hundreds of monarchs were released on a regular basis, and I personally planted all the trees that stand there today. This was a project of love, not business.” Penrod had already built an incredibly successful business, multiple ones, in fact.

Located on the ocean and boasting the prestigious address of 1 Ocean Drive, Nikki Beach Miami Beach was the first of the 14 venues to establish itself as a quintessential South Beach landmark and luxury beach club in 1998.
His eponymous bars and clubs stretched from Daytona Beach to Fort Lauderdale to Miami Beach. In 1998, Nikki Beach began its life as a memorial and seaside café. The space was so beautiful it resonated with a group of local nightlife promoters who asked to bring their popular “Beehive” event to the property at 1 Ocean Drive. Jack thought it would continue the spirit his daughter had enjoyed with its mix of chilled surfers, artists, musicians, aspiring models and locals. “The vibe was like a stress-free zone that made everybody feel good and happy,” says Lucia Penrod, Nikki Beach’s CEO. “There was magic in the air that kept attracting more and more people. It started with a few customers telling their friends, and their friends telling their friends. We had no idea back then that we were creating a lifestyle of celebration centered around family and friends.” Nikki Beach’s early association with this Bohemian crowd also helped to create the brand’s “barefoot luxury” identity, accented by the tribal elements Jack introduced, such as the signature teepee and all white décor. “I have always had a strong affinity with the Native American culture,” he explains. “My mother used to tell us we were part Cherokee; I guess I believed her! I admire the Native American’s profound relationship with Mother Earth, their family gatherings around a campfire, their history, their spirituality. I have always been very close to nature. And since all of this was created to honor Nikki, the tribal influences incorporated everything my family loved.” Nikki Beach also infused European-style

beach club culture into the mix, and its American audience happily adjusted to the long lunches and rosé lifestyle better known in Saint Tropez than South Beach at the time. “Back in the late ’90s, rosé wine in America was so foreign that you could only find a few inexpensive brands, which tasted, well, not so good,” Lucia says. “We started bringing rosé from the South of France and selling it like crazy! In a humble way, I would like to believe that we helped rosé become popular in America. We felt like true trendsetters.” As demand built for the scene Nikki Beach was creating in Miami, Jack and Lucia launched a second Nikki Beach location in Saint Tropez in 2002. Nikki Beach Saint Tropez was an immediate success, buoyed by the contagious spirit of the brand, tribal elements, delicious cuisine and star appeal. Naomi Campbell hosted Saint Tropez’s opening and made it a White Party theme, which endures to this day for Nikki Beach globally. Saint Barth opened that winter, followed by locations in Spain, Thailand, Greece, Dubai, Turkey, Italy and Barbados. A Hotels & Resorts division now boasts five global properties spanning Thailand, Greece, Turkey and Dubai, with more in the pipeline this year. Of course, Nikki Beach Miami Beach remains the brand’s flagship, where the magic spark started 20 years ago. “Today, Nikki Beach Miami Beach is a top travel destination,” Lucia enthuses. “And even though it is one of our biggest properties, we have been able to maintain the laidback vibe and our commitment to ‘Celebrate Life’ with tourists and locals alike. We credit the location’s enduring popularity to our ‘Tell Only Your Best Friends’ grassroots campaign and our thousands of followers who, after 20 years, are still very much in love with our brand.” “To see what my little girl Nicole did for us and for the Nikki Beach family has left me speechless,” continues Jack. “We were once asked, ‘How does it feel to be the ones that changed the way people party around the world?’ We had no answer, but the truth is, we did! Our team created the ultimate daytime party!”

Nikki Beach thrives on the power of music to celebrate life; it’s one of the main pillars that define the very essence of the Nikki Beach brand. Within the 14 worldwide resort locations, Nikki Beach has a small family of DJs that spread their light (and musical beats) onto the dance floors and into our spirits. Heading the knowledgeable panel of musical stars is Philippe Paris, who is the Global Music Ambassador for all Nikki Beach destinations; DJ Karl8 is a resident in Mallorca; Patris Gero headlines Saint Barth and Saint Tropez; DJ Antonio is based in Marbella; while Mademoiselle Sabah is the resident DJ at Nikki Beach Dubai. Aspiring DJs take note, music must be in your soul at a very young age. Mademoiselle Sabah describes music as always being part of her heritage growing up, “I grew up in a big family of seven brothers and sisters. They all loved different genres of music — my parents used to listen to Arabic music, my brothers were listening to soul and funk, my sisters to dance, pop music and hip-hop, so at an early age, I was surrounded by an eclectic mix.” This only highlights that diversity is certainly the spice of life.
DJ Patris Gero is based in Saint Barth during winter and Saint Tropez during summer. “I play at the Cannes Film Festival and at Nikki Beach Saint Tropez. In October I like to come back to my paradise island in Saint Barth,” he says. He certainly lives the life, but his success comes from his passion for music. For him, music is an art form, an expression of thoughts and feelings, and a universal language. The inspiration behind his work is drawn from a broad range of artists and DJs. “Whether it’s their melodies that are inspiring, or the beats that you can see the crowds really reacting to – I’m always looking out for new sounds and inspiration,” he says. Philippe Paris started working as a DJ in 1988, and says, “I fell in love with this job the first time I set foot in a club. Music is about passion, sharing, love, fun and dancing.” He adds, “The best thing about being a DJ is getting paid to make people have fun! Some of the most memorable jobs to date include a July 4 party in Saint Tropez and playing with Paul McCartney in a New Year’s Eve bash in Saint Barth.” Carlo, better known as DJ Karl8,

says, “I’ve played in a lot of huge events. I can’t tell you how many, probably 2,000 or more. I’ve been number one 12 times in the charts and I’ve won one gold disc in Germany. I’ve worked and remixed with a lot of big artists like Michael Jackson, Katy Perry, Linkin Park, and many more during my career.” When we asked him what was the best thing about his job? He replies, “Making people happy is the best thing you can do in the world.” The producer and label owner lives and breathes music 24 hours a day. “It’s my passion and my life.” Nowadays, you’ll find the DJ in Mallorca. He first started working with Nikki Beach a few years ago. “It was meant to be. I sent an email to the general manager in Mallorca. We met for 10 minutes and literally we had the same vision how we wanted the parties to be. It happened just like that. I moved from my home in Miami to the beautiful island of Mallorca in 2016 and I’ve never looked back since.” Talking to the DJs, it’s clear that if you follow your true calling and you’re courageous enough, you can’t really fail. DJ Antonio grew up in England. He first got his set of decks at 12 years old.With a natural curiosity to learn more about the music world, back then, the only way to understand the underground scene was to buy vinyl, and that’s exactly what he did. This led him to kick-start his DJ career. After traveling around the world, he ended up owning a bar in Koh

I was DJing one night and the GM from Nikki Beach - Andy Tsavos at the time - liked my style and asked me to DJ at the Amazing Sundays Brunch at Nikki Beach. The rest is history,” he adds. Nikki Beach’s only female resident DJ is Mademoiselle Sabah. She started her journey at Nikki Beach Ibiza before joining the ranks at Nikki Beach Dubai. “Life in Ibiza is magic. It’s difficult to explain the vibe to people who’ve never been — many find it hard to believe that Ibiza is not just partying 24/7. Of course you can party, but Ibiza has many sides,” the DJ explains. “Ibiza and Dubai are incomparable. I’m only in Ibiza for three months, and as you can imagine, it’s really intense. Dubai is home for me and it’s easier to lead a more relaxed and grounded life. However, at the end of the day, my job is my passion and I’m a DJ with the same enthusiasm and desire at both of these fabulous Nikki Beach locations.” All the Nikki Beach resorts are a great place to celebrate life, with phenomenal parties, fantastic music, great food and a vibe like no other! In 2017, Nikki Beach, a brand that is always looking for ways to support up-and-coming artists, DJs, designers, filmmakers and more, launched a photography competition in association with gallery owner and director, Daniel Miller, a talent who has been named one of Entrepreneur magazine’s Top 59 tycoons for 2017. Famous for his association with “The Australian,” an exhibition that helped save some of the iconic country’s cultural history, the Daniel Miller Gallery, through its project for art collectors, YourDailyPhotograph.com, created a call for submissions. They asked its 2,700 international photographer-artists to create an 18-piece collection of photographs curated to the theme “Celebration of Life,” showcasing uplifting and hopeful photographs that bring a certain feeling of optimism and energy to its viewer. A theme that has long been a mantra for Nikki Beach and the Penrod family, the competition “Celebration of Life” is yet another dedication to Jack Penrod’s daughter Nicole, who tragically

Having shown his work at Nikki Beach Saint Tropez for several years, Daniel’s competition will give emerging artists the chance to exhibit their talent in front of the Nikki Beach clientele. The prize? A traveling exhibition that starts in summer 2018, touring all of Nikki Beach’s locations around the world, with a host of specific art events with sellable prints. With a world premiere taking place at the Cannes International Film Festival in May, Daniel and a panel of judges selected 18 photographers from the 2,700 applicants. From there, the team will pick one image from each finalist that will make up the capsule collection. With every photograph illustrating the concept, each print will be signed by the artist and available to buy at each exhibition.
