Issue three is full of news, events, people and stories from around the world. Our main story highlights the importance we attach to our people, including the ways we share knowledge and experience to improve and personalise our services and our working relationships with both our customers and our stakeholders.
Plus an interview with Gaston Nsangu, Shipping Manager for NileDutch in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a glimpse into NileDutch South Africa and a customer story from China that highlights the growing importance of the trade between China and Africa.
We have recently won a prestigious award at the Cannes film festival. Unfortunately there weren’t any Hollywood stars in sight, but we were still proud to walk away with a Silver Dolphin in the Corporate Movie Category at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards. Read more on page 20. Another highlight was our worldwide Brand Essentials Day (see page 14). Brand essentials reflect the values and beliefs that our company incorporates in everything that it does. The day was an effective, and fun, opportunity to familiarise every NileDutcher with our brand essentials: Africa, Personal, Accessible and Reliable. This issue also includes a depot specialist giving his view on the situation in South Africa, an update about the four

FACT-FINDING IN ANGOLA A couple of months ago I joined a large group of NileDutchers from around the world – Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, China, France, India, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa and United Arab Emirates – travelled to Angola for a fact-finding trip. In addition to touring the ports of Lobito and Luanda, the group visited factories of local customers, the Expotrans 2013 trade fair and a major Chinese house construction project (Reconstruction Angola). There were also productive workshops to help everyone learn more about Angola and the importance of the Angolan market, as well as improving cooperation between NileDutch offices worldwide. NILEDUTCH ACADEMY The first year of the NileDutch Academy saw NileDutchers from the Antwerp and Rotterdam offices meeting up regularly to learn about how their departments and teams could help shape our future success. The 13 participants incorporated a good combination of key players and talents, veterans and newcomers, managers and employees from most NileDutch departments. Like NileDutch’s strategic development itself, the program didn’t follow a straight line from A to B, but adopted actual opportunities that followed the rhythm of the company’s development. A joint journey, not a guided tour. Focussing on strategic mind-set and soft skills, the main topics were the NileDutch vision and strategy, branding & marketing communications, personal leadership, project management, change management and cross cultural management. A variety of approaches and methods was used including external speakers, strategic models, workshops, buddy duos, mood boards, self assessments and ‘a day with ...’, allowing participants to meet a NileDutch director in an unusual way. During the final Academy session the participants were invited to show their strategic knowledge in a ‘Strategy update meeting with NileDutch stakeholders’ role-play. In this learning exercise the ‘stand-in board members’ presented a very plausible and

credible strategic update and showed confidence in answering all kinds of stakeholders questions. We learned from this that a proper strategy is not a complex scientific concept but reflects a fine, simple and binding story, founded on everyday experiences. The group did not need a ‘masters voice’ to present themselves as fine NileDutch ambassadors. Another parallel part of the program was a team assignment. COO Jan-Willem de Braal invited the Academy group to come up with a proposal on ‘how to live the brand’. In other words, how do we match our internal communication, cooperation, attitudes and behaviours to the NileDutch external brand? The participants presented their findings and proposals to NileDutch senior management as part of the official closing of the first Academy. The learning results included a strengthened strategic mind-set, a company wide overview on the business and organisation, cross-departmental insight, extra cross-cultural awareness and a strong collegial network. All of these fine and indispensable results will enable us to maintain great service and flexibility while growing rapidly at the same time. After every training experience, we evaluate its pros and cons and decide how effective it’s been. Our experience has shown that fact-finding trips are always productive, improving working relationships throughout our organisation.
JOHAN PASTOOR After graduating in Communications Studies, Johan worked for several years at communications consultancies. In the late 1990s he went across to the other side and fulfilled various communications roles with international businesses. Johan joined NileDutch as Communications Manager in June 2013, with over 20 years’ experience of corporate communications.

SHANGHAI SHIPYARD For over 145 years, the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) has built and repaired vessels for domestic and foreign owners at sites along the Chinese coast. One part of CSSC is Shanghai Shipyard Co. Ltd., which has built over 500 vessels since 1949. In May 2005, CSSC moved Shanghai Shipyard to its present location on the south shore of Chongming Island at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Covering an area of 1.8 million m2, Shanghai Shipyard has 2,784 m of quays, a slipway for vessels up to 100,000 tonnes, two floating docks (for vessels of 35,000 and 80,000 tonnes) and two floating docks for ship repairs (for vessels of 40,000 and 100,000 tonnes). In total, over 10,000 people work at the shipyard in design, administration, logistics and production.
After studying to be a Maritime Mechanical Engineer, Johan joined the Dutch Navy for three years. Since then, he has worked on new buildings, ship maintenance and operational management in the fishing industry. Johan joined NileDutch in August 2012 and is in charge of the project management of the new NileDutch vessels.

Block construction for vessel four is currently underway at the main shipyard at Chongming Island, while this stage is almost over for vessels three and two. The hull of vessel three is now being assembled in the main shipyard in Chongming while the hull of vessel two is under construction on the shipyard in Puxi, near the centre of Shanghai. From Chongming, the blocks for vessel two are transported by barge to the dry dock in Puxi, around 50 km from the main shipyard, for assembly.

Vessel one is currently located at the outfitting quay on the shipyard at Chongming Island. The vessel was launched in October 2013 after which the main engine was installed and the superstructure placed on the ship. Presently the shipyard is outfitting
It’s now February 2014. It won’t be long until the first vessel leaves the shipyard ready to undertake her maiden voyage and deliver her first container. It’s going to be a busy couple of months, but I know the end result will be worth the wait.

The last step before each vessel is declared ready for her maiden voyage is a three-day sea trial. Crewed by experienced sailors, equipment technicians and commissioning engineers, each vessel will be put through her paces to ensure full seaworthiness and proper operation of all installed equipment.

2014 and we’re on the move! As a main hub and direct loading port for the WEWA service, the port of Antwerp plays an important role in the NileDutch liner service to West Africa.
Constantly seeking to improve its service level, NileDutch has switched its loading berth in the port of Antwerp. From January 2014, our vessels will be operated at IMT berth 242 on the right bank instead of at Katoen Natie berth 1227. The first call at berth 242 (UCE) was mv NILEDUTCH DURBAN (voy. 11039A) on January 7th. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Katoen Natie for their valuable work and support for many years. We wish them all the best.

10 Africa: the continent of the future It’s been a few years since the start of the global economic crisis and while most countries and regions are starting to show signs of recovery, others are doing their best to push ahead as if the crisis had never happened. Africa, and South Africa in particular, is one of these fortunate regions according to Kevin Moodley, Branch Manager, NileDutch South Africa.

THE STREET The African continent is finally brushing off the negative reputation that tarnished it for years. Replacing it is a reputation as a young and vibrant continent, full of opportunities for those ready to make the most of them. “Africa is virtually untapped in the global economy. Pretty much any mineral, gas, oil or agricultural product that your heart desires can be found in abundance in Africa,” says Kevin. “Africa will become an increasingly vital supplier for the world’s demands, unless, of course, other means can be found to quench the thirst the world has for such commodities. But that’s not likely to happen any time soon.”

“As part of the global NileDutch network, we can rely on the knowledge, experience and contacts of our colleagues around the world to assist us and our customers as necessary,” says Kevin. “For example, some of our customers have had problems with storage charges in Angola. Our colleagues at NileDutch Angola helped our customer to find a solution that was beneficial to all parties, including the port authorities at the destination port. This helped to reduce the customer’s storage costs considerably.”
South Africa has a special place within Africa. Seen as a firstworld economy, South Africa has benefited from the positive changes implemented by past and present leaders. These changes have encouraged substantial and continued investment that, in turn, has helped the country to sustain its growing economy and its position in the continent. Successfully hosting events such as the 2010 World Cup have only added to South Africa’s standing on the world stage.
Other issues that often spring to mind when thinking about shipping to Africa include poor infrastructure and port congestion. “These problems are slowly becoming part of the past and that’s where they will remain. In the meantime, NileDutch implements creative workarounds where possible,” says Kevin. “Africa’s mineral wealth has encouraged major infrastructure investments, which are beginning to alleviate certain congestion issues, but these projects take time to complete. The end result will improve the quality of conducting business in Africa.”
NileDutch South Africa is well placed to help local and international companies make the most of the opportunities offered by the African continent. As an integral part of the Far East - West Africa trade route, NileDutch South Africa has seen tremendous growth over the last few years.

NileDutch: The Chinese Connection Since the first official bilateral SinoAfrican trade agreement was signed in the late 1950s, trade between the two parties has rapidly grown, with trade volumes reaching US$1 billion in 1980, US$10 billion in 2000 and US$114 billion in 2010, making China the African continent’s largest economic partner.

“I’ve been working in shipping for over 30 years now. I first started at Comexas Afrique, the NileDutch agent in the DRC, back in 1997 but left in 2003 to work at a competitor. After a major disappointment with the competitor a few years later – they didn’t follow their global Standard Operating Procedures in the DRC – I was, luckily, able to return to Comexas Afrique. I was very grateful to my Manager, Jean-Michel Philippot, for accepting my return to Comexas. I still thank him a lot for his trust and his support. Since then, I have been in charge of the Shipping Department of Comexas Afrique and especially the NileDutch account.

In my own country, I feel disappointed about how things are managed. The DRC has a lot of natural and human resources. But there are still huge social and economic problems. So, to be optimistic, DRC remains a challenging country. To deal with all the difficulties we are facing, I would like to thank my wife, my main supporter. Together we have five children and three grandchildren as well as a beautiful life that we have built together. We have supported each other since our wedding in 1978 and I am sure we will continue to support each other until the end of our lives.”
I enjoy working with NileDutch because of the way business is managed with much flexibility, reliability and a human touch. I also admire people committed to improving their society. Fifty years ago nobody would have thought that a black man could be President of the United States. And now it’s a reality. SILVER DOLPHIN AWARD FOR NILEDUTCH CORPORATE MOVIE
This challenging project required extensive preparation: planning trips, booking hotels, meetings, interviews, equipment, etc. The Belgian production team worked closely with NileDutch personnel and customers at many locations and shot some impressive footage and photographs.
Our corporate movie NileDutch – The Africa Connection has won a coveted Silver Dolphin award in the category Corporate Film at the 2013 Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards.
Throughout the production period we received great cooperation from our customers, colleagues and authorities. We would like to thank them all! After the shooting period it took some time to edit the material to the NileDutch corporate movie. In addition to the corporate movie, we have now also released several country-specific movies and short testimonials. We feel we can be proud of the results. The corporate movie effectively presents our company, NileDutch – The Africa Connection. You can watch the corporate movie and the other movies on our website and YouTube. The photographers were also busy during the production period, and their work is now used on our website and in other NileDutch communications. The images and experience will serve as a source of inspiration for creating attractive communications in future to strengthen NileDutch’s branding worldwide.

The Cannes Awards are a major industry event, attracting 719 entries from 40 countries. We are very proud of winning the Silver Dolphin award and of the enthusiastic support which our customers and personnel gave to the production of the movie. The movie not only introduces NileDutch and our brand essentials but also focuses on positive developments in Africa.
LARISSA N’GBO With a long background in shipping, Larissa N’gbo joined NileDutch in 1999. She spent many years focusing on the processes and procedures within the company before joining the Communications Department as a dedicated team member five years ago.

It is definitely a mutually beneficial relationship – for Kings Rest Container Park, for NileDutch and for our customers.”
As part of the Penta Shipping Holdings Group, a group of companies specialised in the shipping industry, Kings Rest Container Park focuses on the empty depot function. Kings Rest Container Park employs over 100 people at their two depots: an 8,000-TEU capacity depot with a 24-hour service in Bayhead, Durban and a 4,000-TEU capacity depot in the middle of City Deep, Johannesburg’s main logistics area. A third depot, in Cape Town, is planned for 2014. The depots offer NileDutch and our customers a full logistics services chain, including storage, handling, repairs and transportation of full and empty containers. “Looking to the future, we’re planning a new depot in Cape Town and are currently expanding both our Bayhead and our City Deep depots to increase our future capacity,” Wayne continues. “And we’re just finishing up a major investment in our

Over the years, Kings Rest Container Park has changed and expanded its range of services to better serve NileDutch and their customers. “One example that springs to mind concerns flexi units for packing oil products,” says Wayne. “We now prepare NileDutch flexi units on site, mitigating the need for additional haulage, which in turn reduces costs and turnaround times of units and makes it easier for customers to pack according to their schedules.” “Our partnership with NileDutch has gone from strength to strength over the last decade, both from a professional and a personal point of view,” concludes Wayne. “I look forward to seeing what the future brings.”
