03 Dear friends, Welcome to this, the eleventh edition of The Africa Connection, our regular newsletter on the NileDutch family and the environment in which we work. We hope that you find it interesting and enjoyable. Here at NileDutch, we take pride in placing the customer front and centre in everything we do. We consider this to be our point of difference and we are so lucky to have great and loyal customers who appreciate the extra effort we make. In this edition you meet two of them: Unique Logistics in Vietnam and INTEGRA in Brazil. They appear in our “Customer Story” and “Feet on the Street” columns respectively. However, this loyalty is not “a given”; it has to be earned. Best of all, this can be achieved through quality of service, which is why we are currently in the process of changing over to the new Allegro ERP (enterprise resource planning) system. This exciting new development, which features the next stage in automation and intelligent algorithms to assist in everything that we do, will be of benefit to the whole NileDutch community: customers, colleagues, agents and partners alike. You can read how this project is developing in “ERP of the future”. Alongside our customer-oriented approach, it is our expertise that also sets us aside. We have been busy building up our Reefer cargo activities, as our mango campaign story from the Ivory Coast shows. Occasionally, we have to adapt to a completely different way of working due to local circumstances. When our MPV service calls São Tomé and Príncipe is just one example of the day-to-day challenges we face, and solutions, together with our local partners, that we provide. Ultimately though, the most important factor behind our “point of difference” is our people. Throughout this edition of The Africa Connection you come to meet with many of them from Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Netherlands and Vietnam. Whether its working together with our customers, raising money for charity, sponsoring local events, engaging with Ambassadors or Ministers, attending conferences or coming together to share experiences, we are rightly proud of them. Participation to the ‘Run for Hunger’
NileDutch Team
In November last year, NPM Capital organised its annual “Run for Hunger” in Amsterdam. This event is a fund-raiser for “The Hunger Project”, which has, as its aim, the elimination of world hunger. A particular focus of this charity is Benin, in West Africa. Like last year, NileDutch was approached to enter a team, which we were glad to do. As a result, we sent six runners: two for the 10km run and four for the 5km. A good time, whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause, was had by all.

Ambassador of the Netherlands visits NileDutch Congo Last April, NileDutch Congo was honoured to host the visit of the Ambassador of the Netherlands and accompanying delegation to the Port Autonome de Pointe Noire (PAPN) on the occasion of the Dutch King’s official birthday (Koningsdag, or King’s Day). The Ambassador, Mr Robert Shuddeboom, wished to celebrate this special day for the Dutch community in Pointe Noire. As well as meeting with the Director General of the PAPN, Mr. Seraphin Bhalat, he was given a guided of the Congo Terminal by its managing director, Mr. Laurent Palayer, and other port facilities. The NileDutch Congo team was proud to receive the Ambassador in their new premises, all of them adorned with a touch of orange in honour of the day’s festivities.

“I worked in container shipping for eight years before moving into freight forwarding in which I have stayed for sixteen years, fourteen of those being with Unique Logistics. “As a forwarder, our main market is the United States followed by Asia, Europe and Africa. In particular, our main Africa route is from Ho Chi Minh City to Bata and Malabo (Equatorial Guinea). Going forward, we will focus on the United States, South America and Africa.
“Our main contacts with NileDutch are Ms. Tracy Mai (Sales Manager), Ms Nga Nguyen (Country Manager) at S5 Asia, NileDutch’s agents in Ho Chi Minh City, and Mr. Choo Beng, Managing Director of NileDutch Singapore. We have received great support from them. Having worked together with NileDutch for a number of years, I am happy with its services and customer minded approach and aim to extend our relationship not only in Vietnam but also regionally.” We certainly look forward to continuing and building upon our relationship. Thank you Mr Tran.
Vietnam is a vibrant and booming country. With a youthful population of more than 90 million, it has an annual GDP growth of more than 6%. It is Samsung’s largest production base for cell phones and has attracted significant investment from South Korea, Japan and Taiwan in particular. It is looking forward to seeing a new wave of investment from Europe as the free trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and Vietnam is in last stages of negotiation. Main exports from Vietnam include crude oil, electronics, furniture, garments, footwear, seafoods, rice and other agricultural products. One cargo that we move for Unique Logistics is Saigon Beer to Equatorial Guinea. In Vietnam, custom has it that (most) foreign tourists have to try at least one bottle!

Introducing Gilbertine Wafeu in Cameroon
09
For this edition of The Africa Connection we meet Gilbertine Wafeu, General Manager of NileDutch Cameroon. Having started out in finance and accounting, she joined the shipping industry fifteen years ago and has enjoyed it ever since. A relatively new recruit to NileDutch, she epitomises our customer orientated approach. For her, customer satisfaction is “not the consequence of what we do, but the purpose of our actions”. Below she talks more about her background, NileDutch in Cameroon and the work that they do. uala
NileDutch office in Do
“I started as a trainee in Cameroon working in logistics, sales and customer service departments. It was in this last I realised had a passion for working directly with customers. This has guided my career since, living and working in different African countries like Benin, Gabon and Ivory Coast as country sales manager and general manager, for example. I returned home to Cameroon in 2017 and joined NileDutch in January 2018. “Our main office is located in the Douala port area. We are a team of thirty-three people covering sales, booking, customer service and operations. I work closely with my management team on a daily basis, designing our strategies together to guide our operations but still being flexible to adapt to any changes.
“We put customer satisfaction as our top priority. In fact, it’s impressive to see the strong links our commercial team has built with our client base. Our customers look for a partner that is always accessible and ready to find solutions to optimise their supply chain. This attitude is exemplified by Marie Kamga, our Commercial Director. She is experienced in the market and, due to her diligence, we have been able to develop many potential customers into loyal partners. They do not expect us to be perfect, but they appreciate the fact we never spare efforts to make things work. “NileDutch Cameroon has successfully positioned itself as a key player on the trades we serve. Our main connection is provided by the West Europe-West Africa (WEWA) service. We use our feeder service linking with Pointe Noire (Congo, Republic) for coastal cargo and shipments to and from Asia. “Douala is our major port of entry and is used not only for Cameroon but also Chad and Central Africa Republic, to name a few. However, since March 2018, the new Kribi deep sea port started operations. It is located in the city of Mboro, 170km south of Douala, and aims at becoming a hub for Central Africa. With 16-metres depth, the port can accommodate vessels up to 400 meters long and 100,000 tons deadweight, equivalent to the largest vessels sailing to West Africa. We took up the challenge to extend our activities to Kribi as soon as it became operational, giving us a competitive advantage by offering solutions to our clients from both of Cameroon’s main ports.

10 “We also have ambitions to strengthen our position and develop new segments. For example, we recently developed, with success, new businesses of sawn timber exports to Europe, and cocoa products and rubber to Europe and USA. Our usual exports in containers are cocoa beans to Europe and logs to Asia. “I’m very optimistic about the future and it’s definitely an exciting time in Cameroon. Our country is currently developing several large infrastructure projects alongside the Kribi deep sea port, such as the Lom Pangar Hydropower Project. We import building materials as containerised top commodity, but also foodstuffs (flour, sugar, malt) and used clothing from Europe on our direct WEWA service. “Douala can sometimes be overwhelming during the day, but is always exceptional by night! The people are welcoming and make you feel at home. The food, enriched with local spices will leave you with an unforgettable taste of local flavours.

Shiplink 2018 Last October, the tenth biennial Shiplink event was held in Antwerp. It started in 2001 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Antwerp Shipping Federation, but has now become an important maritime event in its own right. Members of the Antwerp Shipping Federation, principally shipping agents, invite customers and business relations for a buffet and drinks in a relaxed environment. The 2018 edition was again a success where, alongside NileDutch, shippers, forwarders, terminal operators, cargo handlers, authorities and other service providers met in a friendly atmosphere.

Located in the Pearl River Delta, Nansha terminal in the port of Guangzhou has become an important node in NileDutch’s intercontinental network. We are PORT ELIZABETH represented in the port by our own office led by Patrick Wu as Regional Sales Manager, where he is assisted by eight other people. Despite intense competition from neighbouring ports, especially Shenzhen and Hong Kong, Guangzhou has grown faster than them this past decade. Within that, NileDutch is well placed as we have also grown, and in 2017 and 2018 we received awards from the Guangzhou Port Authority for our throughput contribution. In 2017, the port handled more than 68,000 TEU in Africa related cargoes, over 70% being westbound exports. For West Africa in particular, we are one of the major players out of Nansha, where we call with our Far East West Africa FEWA service, with a market share of around 25% As a symbol of the close working relationship we enjoy with Guangzhou port, we received a delegation from the the Port Authority in September 2018 in our Rotterdam head office. Both parties reaffirmed their happiness at how the relationship between them had developed and looked forward to building upon the advantages that both bring to grow even further.
Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta is home to many major manufacturing concerns such as Midea (world’s largest white goods manufacturer) and Huawei (second largest smartphone producer in the world), amongst many others. However, there are also strong local connections with Africa. Not only is Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta the largest Chinese export market to West Africa, according to local statistics, in 2014, there were around 200,000 African expatriates living and working in Guangzhou, equivalent to around half of all expatriates in the city.

NileDutch has a proud history in the multipurpose shipping sector, shipping more than just containers. This is a legacy we have continued through, most obviously, our MPV service. However, our ability to carry so-called out-of-gauge cargoes is not restricted to this service. Indeed, in October 2018, we had an interesting shipment which showcased the flexibility we offer on our “container” services too. Moving a Petro Craft 1605 crew boat on behalf of our client, Petro Services, from Pointe Noire to Abidjan (Ivory Coast). This required a complex loading operation at Congo Terminal that took two days. On day one, the boat was lifted from the water using a mobile crane. It was positioned and secured on a truck equipped with special cradles shaped to receive the boat. On day two, it was transferred alongside and loaded on board MV Hawk Hunter on a bed of seven 42P1 (40’ flat) containers. The vessel, which was on our West Europe-West Africa WEWA service, arrived in Abidjan after a two-week transit.
NileDutch and Congo Terminal teams worked closely together to secure and safely load the Petro Craft.

Copper Corridors Globally, there is estimated to be 794 million tons of copper reserves, more than 40% of that being located in Chile, Peru and Australia. In 2017, estimated global copper mine production was 19.7 million tons with Chile, Peru and China the largest producers with a combined 48% share.
The Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia are also considered among the world’s leading producers, situated as they are on the Central Africa Copperbelt which contains numerous substantial deposits. In 2017, it was estimated that these two countries had a combined 8% share of global production and 6% of known reserves. Indeed, the Kansanshi and Sentinel mines in Zambia and the Kamoto mine in DR Congo are considered by the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) to be among the world's twenty largest, by capacity. Expectations are that DR Congo and Zambia copper exports could grow by more than 50% in the coming years.

However, with the Central Africa Copperbelt straddling northern Zambia and southern DR Congo, there are substantial logistical and administrative challenges given the landlocked location, which often requires transit through more than one other country, and the lack of a developed transportation infrastructure.
Different methods are used to transport the copper. Copper cathodes can be shipped in bundles on flatbed trains or trucks for pre-carriage to port where they are transloaded into containers prior to the ocean transport. However, the choice is down entirely to shippers and can depend upon the route taken with one port of loading receiving predominantly containerised cargoes and another non-containerised.
Currently, the most common routes are to the south through Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa to Durban or through DR Congo/Zambia and Tanzania to Dar Es Salaam. The main export markets are to the Far East and Middle East.
As for inland transport mode, some shippers prefer rail, some prefer road although the choice is limited. To Durban, for example, there is only one train from Zambia. Further there is only one border crossing between DR Congo and Zambia
18 handling freight traffic. As a result, it can take days to cross from one to other. Even so, by and large, whether to Durban or Dar Es Salaam, road transport is still significantly faster on transit times of around one or two weeks respectively. Whichever mode is used, there are issues surrounding infrastructure capacity (not enough) and/or capability (not strong enough/needing repair or refurbishment), over and above any congestion issues at the ports of loading. As such, shippers are keen to try different routes and modal combinations, including the western coastline of Africa and Walvis Bay (Namibia) and Lobito (Angola) in particular. Walvis Bay is due to commission a new 650,000 TEU capacity container terminal in 2019 and the inland logistics corridor that it anchors is heavily and effectively promoted by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group. The hope is that this new container terminal will help attract more calls which in turn will lead to greater use of the currently under-utilised corridor. Unlike all current options, including to Walvis Bay, the Lobito (Benguela) corridor would be routed through a different border crossing out of the Central Africa Copperbelt. It offers the shortest distance to port and is already being tested by a number of shippers, albeit with small volumes. NileDutch is deeply involved in the further development of this corridor, building upon our established connections from Angola Lobito to China and Europe. For example, to test the effectiveness of this corridor we have recently shipped 4,000 tons of copper
(breakbulk) from Lobito to Europe. Once the infrastructure, including a new rail corridor, is up and running, the expectations are that this will open up a whole new route for exports from the Central Africa Copperbelt. NileDutch is proud and excited to play a key role in such a crucial development for West Africa. COPPER PRODUCTION AND REFINING Copper, chemical symbol Cu, can be mined on the surface, underground or through leaching, with open-pit (surface) mining the most popular method. Through flotation milling, the extracted copper is processed into copper concentrate of around 20-40% copper content before being smelted into a “matte of 50-70% copper content. A further converter furnace process results in blister copper being produced (98.5-99.5% copper content) before being refined or re-melted and cast into anodes for electro-refining. From this, copper cathodes of more than 99.99% content are produced. Producers and traders active in the Central Africa Copperbelt also move concentrate, blisters and cathodes.

USES FOR COPPER Copper has a range of industrial and other uses as a result of its ability to conduct heat and electricity. It also has antimicrobial properties reducing the chance of germs being transferred when touched by more than one person. As such it is found in construction, electrical items and electronics, transport and other forms of machinery. For example, copper wiring can be found in all manner of appliances and telecommunications systems or used for doorknobs and handrails. It was originally the base metal for low value coins although these are now only copper coated. Copper is also an excellent alloy and can be combined with tin to form bronze and zinc to form brass, amongst others. COPPER PRICES The price of copper acted almost like a barometer of the boom and bust that characterised 2008 and 2009 with it crashing down in that latter year. Whilst recovering afterwards, it has subsequently settled down with the last few years showing consistent decline although provisional figures for 2017 suggest some hope for a recovery. Modus Operandi in São Tomé
NileDutch’s MPV (multipurpose vessel) service continues to prove popular. The small island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe is becoming an increasingly regular feature on this service, but calling the main port on São Tomé requires special handling. Our geared MPV vessels drop anchor about two miles off the coast in open sea. From there, using the MPV ship’s cranes, cargoes are discharged and transloaded onto a pontoon which has been towed alongside by a tug. This process is known as lighterage with the tug/pontoon (or barge) known as a lighter. The full lighter then sails to the port, this trip taking about one and a half hours. There, the cargo is discharged onto the
Lighter: “a large, open, flat-bottomed barge, used in unloading and loading ships offshore or in transporting goods for short distances in shallow waters” (dictionary.com).
quayside using a mobile wheeled construction crane. If we are moving containers, none of these leave the port. They are stripped on site before being returned to us. As you can imagine, this whole process is quite challenging and requires expertise, a geared vessel, available tug and pontoon (lighter) and agents. In São Tomé we are capably represented by our friends at Hull Blyth. In the attached
photo you can see one of our MPV vessels in the open sea with the tug/ barge combination (lighter) alongside.

NileDutch takes care of your fragile cargo
In a new development for NileDutch in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), we helped with the export of mangoes from West Africa to Europe. Cyril Gouillard, our Area Manager located in Abidjan, recalls the experience and gives us a brief insight into this particular fruit and how is handled.
“It was a team effort. The office is led by Patrick Amani (NileDutch Line Manager in Abidjan) but all were involved, not only the Equipment Department but also the Ship Operations, Sales, and Legal departments, plus our agent Bolloré in Abidjan, who assigned a person dedicated to this traffic.
"This year, the mango season lasted about twelve weeks with a peak between late April and early May. We shipped more than 100 reefer containers via our WEWA service, corresponding to around a 10% market share of exports from Ivory Coast, Mali and Burkina Faso. Antwerp (Belgium) was our main port of discharge although other containers were sent to Algeciras (Spain), Dunkirk (France), Rotterdam (Netherlands) or Tilbury (UK). “Once the high season was over, I visited Rungis (International Market) in Paris in late June with Joffrey Ribeiro, NileDutch’s Sales Representative in Paris. We went to visit some of the main importers and asked for their comments. Their feedback was positive and has encouraged us to do even better next year, especially as we have identified new customers!
Mango SPECIAL
23 Global mango and guava exports 2017 (tonnes) Region/Country
“Mango is a delicious but fragile product. Originating from Burkina Faso, Mali or northern Ivory Coast, it is transported by road or train and then by sea from Abidjan at an average temperature of +8° Celsius. When stuffing the container (with about 23 tonnes of goods) the ambient temperature can be +40° Celsius! Transport and shipping cannot take more than 25 days otherwise there is a risk the quality of the product will deteriorate. This therefore requires a great deal of coordination and respect for schedules. “Globally, the production and transport of mango never stops. It is the second most consumed fruit in the world. Production starts late in the calendar year with exports from Peru and Brazil, then it moves to Africa, like on the Ivory Coast and Senegal, for example, with
other producing regions including Southern Europe (Spain in particular), Asia and Central America (Mexico or the Dominican Republic)." For the last few years now, NileDutch has been actively developing its reefer capabilities in support of not only West Africa but also all areas that we serve. We now have at our disposal a reefer container fleet in excess of 10,000 units, all fitted with modern, efficient and reliable refrigeration systems. We certainly look forward to helping Cyril, Patrick and his team as they further develop this market for NileDutch.

ERP of the future NileDutch has awarded CyberLogitec the contract to replace NileDutch’s existing business operating system with ALLEGRO, an integrated maritime logistics solution. We acknowledge and appreciate the professionalism and support provided by Softship over the past eight years, but are convinced that ALLEGRO is the right way forward for NileDutch. The partnership with Cyberlogitec is the next step on the path of NileDutch on becoming more data driven and digital as the new system incorporates intelligent algorithms to automate and validate data capture resulting in greater real-time accuracy. Mark Kraaijenbrink, Director ICT of NileDutch: ‘As part of our continuous effort to improve our processes and standardize our way of working in an increasingly complex and challenging market, ALLEGRO will enable NileDutch to improve customer service and operational efficiency.’
25
After signing the agreement, the collaboration between NileDutch and Cyberlogitec has launched on September 3 with a 2-week Fit-Gap analysis in which all ALLEGRO modules and functionalities have been discussed extensively with all project team members. Currently NileDutch and Cyberlogitec are working on data and process integration to ensure that the data and way of working match with the new system. Early 2019 NileDutch will test all ALLEGRO modules and train all the end users to enable for a smooth transition into becoming digital. The integrated solution is targeted to go-live during the summer of 2019. PMO – NileDutch Rotterdam

The port of Santos serves the state and city of São Paulo, considered South America’s most populous city (21.6 million by metro population). It is the economic heartland of Brazil, accounting for perhaps as much as half of the country’s economy. Jorge Amador, director at Rochamar Agencia Maritima S/A

Santos the largest and most important port in Latin America
27
Jorge Amador, director at Rochamar Agencia Maritima S/A, and General Manager for NileDutch Brasil, tells us about life and work in Brazil. A Portuguese national, he has been living in Brazil since the 1980s and joined one of Rochamar’s founders, the Rocha Group of companies, eighteen years ago. Nowadays, Rochamar is wholly owned by Ultramar of Chile.
“NileDutch started in Brazil in July 2002 and I have been here since the very beginning! At the time, we had a slot charter agreement with full containers loaded in the south of Brazil, discharged in Cape Town and carried-on by NileDutch ships to West Africa. Today we have our own weekly service calling three Brazilian ports directly: Itajaí, Paranaguá and Santos. We also feeder cargo from the port of Rio Grande to Itajaí. “Our main route is to West Africa, mainly Angola (Luanda is a direct port of call. Pointe Noire, Congo, is also called – Ed). Our service also calls three South African ports (Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth), so we load cargo and receive imports from these places too. We can also tranship Asian cargoes via Cape Town. “Alongside our head office in Santos, we have a sales team and commercial offices in São Paulo and Curitiba. All told, we have thirteen employees fully dedicated to NileDutch plus other Rochamar staff supporting husbandry, documentation and financial matters. There is never a dull moment over here. We are very active and the sales team, including myself, often travel around Brazil visiting clients.
NileDutch team in Santos
“Our client base is in and around São Paulo, and southern Brazil in general. Main products we ship include commodities such as sugar, corn meal and reefer cargo (poultry, pork and beef). Besides these, we ship smaller amounts of furniture, ceramic tiles, resins, paper, foodstuffs in general and building material, all amongst others. “The Port of Santos is the largest and most important in Latin America. There are four container terminals there offering connections with all ports around the globe. Santos itself is one of the oldest cities in Brazil yet has a relatively small population of about 500,000 inhabitants. It is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and the region has beautiful beaches.

28 “Brazil has historical links and ties with Portugal and all Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. It is the 8th largest economy in the world and has an enormous potential to grow much more.” Thank you Jorge. One of NileDutch’s most important clients in Brazil is INTEGRA. Founded in 2001, it offers services to small and medium size poultry producers in the State of Paraná, south of Brazil. Specifically, it provides support in sales, production, storage, exports and logistics. The company’s main office is in Maringá with warehousing facilities, able to store 9,000 tonnes of reefer cargo, situated in Apucarana. Juliana Cappellazzo, who works in INTEGRA’s foreign trade department, tells us a little more about what the company does and how NileDutch helps. “I have worked for INTEGRA for six years in my current job although have a background in the food and chemicals sector going back to the 1990s. We trade in frozen meat and supply over 120 countries, yet are always seeking to increase production and business. For South Africa we ship from southern Brazil using NileDutch. Our experience with NileDutch has been very positive, our contacts being Jorge Amador and Eduardo Finkler (Sales-South) who look after us very well. We very much appreciate the excellent customer service and quick answers provided to our shippers and suppliers.” Thank you Juliana. We certainly look forward to supporting you and INTEGRA going forward.
