03 Dear friends, The last issue of The Africa Connection was focussed on expansion in the form of our newbuild vessels. This issue covers expansion of a different type: of network. We have recently introduced a service from the East Mediterranean to West Africa and have enhanced our Intra-Europe service. In addition to that we will launch a new service between North America and West Africa in February. You can read more about this in Connected to Africa on page 12. Agents also form part of our network and alongside the service developments we have concluded agreements with new agents in Egypt, Marseille Fos, Indonesia and the USA. As we grow, there have been some organisational changes and personnel additions. For example, we have created the positon of Director Africa – Middle East based in Dubai (UAE), which has been filled by Marc Smulders. You can read more about this and other personnel developments on page 4. A recent agency gathering in Istanbul gave everyone associated with our West Europe-West Africa WEWA service, plus the improved Intra-Europe and new East
Mediterranean services, an opportunity to meet customers and hear about new developments. In the Customer Story on page 9, Paul van de Vorle of Van den Bosch Transporten explains his company’s experience working with NileDutch while developing their own services to Africa. There are also the usual features, such as the item by Gaston Nsangu of Comexas Afrique sprl, our agent in Matadi, Democratic Republic of Congo. He tells us about his work and the places to visit there. Cristina Varela of NileDutch Portugal/Marmedsa Agencia Maritima has lots of information about living and working in Lisbon, whilst Grace Lin provides a perspective from Shanghai in “Person in the Picture”, on page 7. On page 4-5 there is also a short item on a Dutch trade mission to South Africa that NileDutch participated in. We hope you find plenty in here to inform and interest you. As always, I would like to thank everyone NileDutch has worked with in 2015 - customers, partners and staff - for their contribution to the success of our company. JAN WILLEM DE BRAAL

Organisational changes NileDutch
Director Africa-Middle East: Marc Smulders As per 1 September 2015 Marc started in his new job as NileDutch’s first ever Director Africa-Middle East. Based in Dubai (UAE), his responsibilities include strengthening existing customer relations, developing new customers, agency performance and effective communications between offices globally. Marc was previously Managing Director Angola, a position he held for many years.
Managing Director, Angola: Peter Carter-James Peter Carter-James, is our new Managing Director Angola, replacing Marc Smulders (see above). Peter has been active as a liner shipping agent in (West) Africa since 1995, including Angola, and brings a great deal of regional experience to NileDutch. We are glad to have him on board.
Senior Director Operations and Container Logistics: Captain Franck Kayser Based in Rotterdam (NL), Franck is a well known figure in the liner shipping world and a welcome addition to our team. He has extensive experience having worked around the world for several leading shipping companies in senior management positions. His various responsibilities with these carriers have covered, amongst others, vessel operations, procurement and network planning.
Dutch trade Last November, a Dutch trade mission of around 80 companies, led by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister for Economic Affairs Martijn van Dam, visited Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa. The mission was focussed on sustainable development and cooperation. In Cape Town they visited the Garden of the Future, an interactive exhibition which features successful Dutch - South African partnerships in areas such as water, energy, logistics and agriculture. NileDutch was represented in the harbour section of the exhibition.

NileDutch strengthens ties with Turkey At the WEWA (West Europe West Africa) event held in Istanbul on the 2nd and 3rd of December 2015, NileDutch further strengthened its ties with Turkey. The focus was upon promoting Nile Dutch’s new East Mediterranean West Africa and enhanced Intra Europe services. The event was started with a presentation by Turkon Line, NileDutch’s partner in the East Mediterranean service. NileDutch’s European agents who attended then had an opportunity to present their suggestions for further improving services to our customers locally and worldwide, and Marc Smulders, recently appointed Director Africa and Middle East, was perfectly placed to update attendees about West Africa trading conditions and markets. The event was rounded off by a great cocktail party with a Turkish slant. This provided Jan Willem de Braal (COO, NileDutch) and Serdar Ayirtman (COO, Catoni, NileDutch's agent in Turkey) with a good opportunity to chat with customers and others and provide them with further information about activities in Turkey. Manuella Maes (Director Europe) concluded by cutting a cake, after which the party continued till late. All-in-all, a highly successful meeting.
mission to South Africa NileDutch COO Jan Willem de Braal was a member of the Dutch delegation and commented: "The mission was a success and an excellent opportunity to further develop and extend our networks in South Africa and the Netherlands."

NileDutch has a large office in Shanghai, China, with a staff of over 30. “I’m Grace Lin, I joined this office in April 2014 and my role is that of Senior Sales Executive (Import & Export). I live in Shanghai, with my husband, an electrical engineer, and my daughter who is now 11. “My work involves both the FEWA (Far East - West Africa) service and the Eastbound service. FEWA mostly involves consumer and industrial products which are shipped from China’s many factories to markets in West Africa. On the Eastbound service we ship commodities in the other direction, thus completing the circle. “Despite the worldwide economic slowdown the trade volumes between China and Africa are still significant, in both directions. NileDutch offers exporters in these markets a range of attractive shipping options. The commodities which NileDutch carries from Africa to China include timber (logs and sawn), minerals, rubber, cotton and cashew nuts. These products are transported in 20 foot and 40 foot dry van and high cube containers. As you would expect, the agricultural commodities have a strong seasonal pattern. Our transit time is around 50 to 60 days, depending on the ports. “Every day I’m in contact with NileDutch colleagues and agents in Africa to identify the best shipping options to China for new and existing customers who trade in commodities. The experience of our people in Africa and their familiarity with the markets is key to doing this effectively.

“It’s fascinating to see some of the unexpected uses of the products we transport. For example, cashew nuts are not only a nice snack to eat but the oil from their shells is also used for making paints and plastics! “NileDutch is firmly established in China, with our own offices in Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Nansha and Hong Kong. Apart from services to major seaports in China we also provide links to inland destinations. Additionally, our vessels call at Singapore from where we have feeder services to many ports in Asia. Our main strengths on these routes are that we specialise in Africa, and that we can respond flexibly and quickly to our customers’ needs.”

Paul van de Vorle of Van den Bosch Transporten
Guest STORY Paul van de Vorle of Van den Bosch Transporten:
"The African market offers a huge potential"
9
Africa is experiencing dynamic economic grouwth. Paul van de Vorle, Manager Business Development at Van den Bosch Transporten: "More and more businesses have identified opportunities and are shipping their products by tank container to Africa." Working together with NileDutch, this logistics service provider is responding to the growing market and the two companies are now shipping a range of bulk goods to, from and within Africa. NileDutch and Van den Bosch Transporten had their first talks in 2012. Paul van de Vorle: "As a tank container operator we saw huge potential growth in the African market. The middle classes are expanding rapidly and where people consume more they also produce more. That means there are great opportunities for transshippers and forwarders." Van den Bosch Transporten decided to move into this expanding market and got in touch with NileDutch. "NileDutch has extensive and detailed knowledge and experience on the African market and that creates trust. After this initial meeting, we decided to do business together once an opportunity arose." FIRST TANK CONTAINERS The first such opportunity came in the middle of 2014 when Van den Bosch Transporten was asked to ship liquids in bulk ABOUT VAN DEN BOSCH TRANSPORTEN With an annual volume of 2.9 million tonnes of transported products, Van den Bosch Transporten is a top-10 bulk transport operator in Europe. Activities include creating worldwide supply chain operations for customers in the food, GMP+ and chemical industries. The transport of liquid and dry bulk cargo is its core business. The company is always looking for innovative combinations of road, rail and water transport. For further information: www.vandenbosch. com VAN DEN BOSCH TRANSPORTEN AND AFRICA In addition to the European activities, Van den Bosch Transporten has a clear focus on the sub-Saharan Africa market. A few years ago, working with NileDutch, this logistics services provider arranged its first consignments from Europe to Africa for its customers. The company now handles large volumes of containerised cargoes not only between the two continents but also within Africa.
to Angola. Van de Vorle: "We contacted NileDutch and started this adventure together. At the end of 2014 the first tanks were shipped to Luanda. We soon discovered that these were the first tank containers ever received in Angola. This milestone provided the basis for further cooperation. Van de Vorle continues: "Together with NileDutch we have introduced a concept to the market which really works. The number of tank containers being shipped to Angola is steadily growing, and our customers can be sure that their products are delivered as agreed and carefully handled in transit." MARKET DEVELOPMENT Van de Vorle is happy with the cooperation and sees many similarities between NileDutch and Van den Bosch Transporten. "We take a similar approach to the market. Just like NileDutch we believe in a strong focus on certain markets rather than upon global market domination. As a result of that, we have developed into a top-10 player in European bulk transport over the last 50 years and we want to expand into Africa with the same focus. We believe in the potential of this growing market and NileDutch is an excellent partner to further develop our activities." Cristina Varela Lisbon: one of Europe’s most beautiful cities Lisbon and Leixões are two important ports on our Europe to West Africa service. Cristina Varela tells us more about her work, her customers and her favourite city. “I joined NileDutch Portugal/Marmedsa Agencia Maritima Lda in 2000. Before that I studied International Relations. I’ve always been interested in international affairs and different cultures because I grew up in three countries: Angola, Cape Verde and Portugal. As Key Account Manager in the Commercial Department I deal with some of our largest accounts. My work involves more than just sales, I aim to build up longterm relationships with customers. I also help them find shipping solutions which contribute to the success of their businesses. In the current market that can be quite a challenge but our focus on the long term helps. Every day I have to look out for new markets and new customers, and also keep an eye on the competition. And those daily challenges are why I enjoy my work. “NileDutch Portugal has grown a lot in recent years and we now have around 35 people here, spread between our offices in Lisbon and Leixões (near Porto). I’m based in Lisbon where our customers include manufacturers, trading companies and freight forwarders. They mostly ship cargo to Angola, but also to Congo, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. The exports include foodstuffs (juices, beer, wine, vegetable oil, milk, etc.) and building materials, machinery and other products. Imports into Portugal are primarily wood from Congo and Cameroon, and coffee and frozen fish from Angola.
“Lisbon has a strategic position on the intersection of major international trade routes across the Atlantic and Europe. I also think it’s one of Europe’s most beautiful cities: on the Tagus river, with hills nearby and fascinating streets and monuments. As I grew up in Angola and Cape Verde I always heard relatives talking about the city. That gave Lisbon an almost mystical aura - and now I’m living and working here! I also love literature and world history, which have links with so many places nearby. For example, there is Belém, the historic port the Portuguese explorers set sail from on their journeys of discovery all around the world. Sintra, a charming village which has become magical to me after reading the novel Os Maias by Eça de Queiroz. He was Portugal’s leading novelist in the 19th century. Really, I could spend all day talking about Lisbon!”

DRC Founded in 1953, Comexas Afrique sprl is a major shipping agent in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It also provides logistics, forwarding and customs clearance services. Shipping Manager Gaston Nsangu, based at Matadi, has been with the company for many years. Comexas has 16 offices covering the whole country and around 500 employees. Four of these offices (Boma, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Matadi) have dedicated NileDutch departments. "We deal with shipping links to Asia, Europe, South America and North America. Our container customers ship logs, sawn timber, rubber and coffee to a range of destinations in Asia (especially China) and Europe. I've been working with NileDutch for 10 years now and have always enjoyed that. Their teams are very professional so you can be confident that the job will be done well. The company's flexibility, professionalism and personal service are particularly appreciated here. My key contacts at NileDutch are Jolanda, Hedwig, Eric, Phil and Lubertha at the head office in Rotterdam. And we, as company, also like to focus on our customers and on being pro-active and professional. In other words: to find the best solutions for the needs of our customers. “In my work I have to deal with a wide range of authorities and businesses, both in the port and elsewhere. They include SCTP (the port and river authority), customs, transport companies, clients, etc.
Gaston Nsangu
Every year Comexas Afrique sponsors the open golf tournaments in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi and the international horse jumping event in Kinshasa. Our office in Kinshasa also participates in the annual NileDutch Brand Essentials day and organises an end-of-year dinner for all employees. “The port of Matadi is located about 140 km inland, on the Congo River, the world's second-largest river. Work is currently underway to improve and extend the facilities at the port. This will contribute to the economy of the region and provide employment. Matadi is served by the NileDutch feeder network which gives access to inland destinations in West Africa. “If you visit the DRC then there are many impressive places to visit. The Zongo Falls on the Congo River are simply spectacular, as is the river itself. Kisantu Botanical Gardens are also worth a visit and there are great beaches at Moanda and Vista. Lola ya Bonobo in Kinshasa is a unique sanctuary for bonobo apes."
