THE LIST THE PUBLISHER The love is in the air, Valentine’s is coming and we all know what that means. It’s time to give gifts to show our appreciation and love for each other. To help you along your way, we have put together a gift guide to give you some ideas on what to get that special someone. We also have featured several restaurants to visit that would be the perfect location for a special date. I think the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day would be to plan something special. It’s not so much about the gift or where you go, but how you go about it. For example, have roses waiting in the car for your date before you even head out. Make a CD with your favorite romantic songs and play it on the way to dinner. Have candles lit at night and watch an old favorite movie with a bottle of wine. The simplest things are usually the best. I would like to thank everyone that made it out to our NiteGuide 1 year parties that took place at Drais and The Galaxy Theatre last month. Everyone had a great time and helped us celebrate in true style. You can check out the videos from our events online at www.NiteGuideMag.com. Perhaps I will see you at one of our future parties! I hope you love this issue as much as we do, enjoy!

INDUSTRY MOVERS & SHAKERS Featured cocktail waitress Jennifer Smith

The first time she walked through the door at AVEC in Huntington Beach, Calif., she was just another girl looking for a place to have fun. One year later, not much has changed except that now she gets paid to do what she loves and what VIP regulars at AVEC seem to think she’s good at. This month’s featured bottle server is Jennifer Smith of AVEC. Jennifer moved from Bakersfield to OC in 2003 to study fashion and to pursue a career as a stylist. Fashionista by day and bottle server by night, Jennifer works hard to personalize your VIP experience. “I do my best to be the life of the party at all of my tables,” said Jennifer. “As a bottle server, I think you need to go above and beyond to develop a relationship with your customers.”

Featured DJ Avi D By Christian Williams

After traveling around the world to play at some of the best clubs on earth, DJ Avi D returned home to Los Angeles and took the time to sit down and tell us a little more about himself and what he’s all about. NiteGuide Mag: Tell us about yourself. Avi D: I’m a DJ/Producer based in LA. As a child I had a huge connection with music. My mom always told me that my Dad was a musician who could play nearly any instrument. After my Dad passed, my brother, a well known DJ in Los Angeles, became my father figure, taking me under his wing. When I was 12 he bought me a pair CDJ’s and a mixer. I practiced everyday. I would mix Dr. Dre with Nirvana with Darude until I developed my own personal style. Djing mobile gigs became my specialty along with understanding different crowds and how to get them dancing. At the age of 15 my brother asked me to open for him at the Avalon; the night was a complete success. It was that night 8 niteguidemag.com

Her festive persona combined with her close attention to small details –sparklers and confetti for birthday celebrants, volunteering to snap photos for her parties, and becoming familiar with their drink selections – make her years of experience in the service industry evident. All of these qualities assist her in turning first-timers at AVEC into regulars. “AVEC is a truly wonderful place to come out with your friends,” says Jennifer, who likens the décor and ambiance of the Huntington Beach club to that of the Vegas-style nightlife scene. “And the staff really goes out of its way to make sure each and every guest receives impeccable service.”

When Jennifer is not outfitting the talent on television shows, music video sets and photo shoots at her day job, she is devoted to giving each of her tables in the VIP section at AVEC a memorable nightlife experience. She makes it her duty to liven up the mood in her surroundings. Be prepared to dance when

Some Dj’s I’ve played with include Steve Aoki, Wolfgang Gartner, Infected Mushrooms, Paul Van Dyke, Felli Fel, and many others. NGM: Describe Avi the DJ. Avi D: I believe what differentiates a good DJ from an average DJ, is reading body language, the ability to get into the crowd’s mind and dance in their shoes. Once you step into to the crowd’s shoes you then have the ability to lead. Making them curious of what’s to come, then surpassing their expectations with the perfect song at the perfect time. around the world Paris, France By Emmanuel Cayanan

A

fter just a moment of wandering the enchanting streets of Paris, France’s charming capital city, it will be no wonder to you why they call it “The City of Lights.” Paris is burning with a vibrant nightlife scene drenched in romance. Your love affair with the city can happen in just about any format, from relaxed bars and cafes to futuristic dance clubs or mellow jazz scenes. Paris is more than just a city of light. It also sparkles in its art, culture and food.

Café de Flore sits at the corner of Boulevard Saint-Germain and the Rue St. Benoit, and it is known for the intellectual crowd that frequently fills its seats. Perfect for a friendly meeting place or a secret rendezvous, the classic Art Deco interior is reminiscent of its own WWII setting. End your night here with dessert and people-watch as Parisians and tourists walk by this busy street corner.

Le Rosebud draws on 1930’s feel that is best shown in the vintage jazz records that are stacked behind the bar. Walking through the front door transports you into the past, a dark and moody reminder of the days when French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre used to come in and unwind over a drink. Visitors enjoy mixed champagne cocktails or whisky sours served from the antiquelooking wooden bar.

Batofar is set on a lighthouse boat that used to serve as a light vessel on the bank of Seine. Internationally acclaimed DJs spin the best in house, techno and trance. Some nights, Batofar even hosts live music by a variety of acts.

Aux Trois Mailletz is a traditional cabaret and piano bar that serves delicious food and invites visitors to sing their lungs out to lively jazz music. The ground floor serves as a quaint piano bar, but party-seekers can descend to the basement for lively entertainment. This tiny cave of a cabaret gets packed around 1 a.m. For amazing music, cocktails and a sing-along or two, visit this Parisian hotspot.

Le Grand Colbert is Le Baron is one of the city’s most popular afterdark destinations. It outshines most other nightclubs in Parisian nightlife. Paparazzi flashbulbs illuminate the entryway nightly as couture fashion models, icons and celebrities make their way into the lush VIP setting where they indulge in champagne and lounge on plush velvet. Le Baron has a selective door policy, and if you aren’t confident enough to strut around like you own the place, then you don’t deserve to be here.

a restaurant located in an historic building in the heart of the 2nd District of Paris and offers traditional French dishes that also have “an exotic touch.” As soon as you walk through the door, you are greeted with the hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant that is also immaculately clean and softly lit. Highlights on the menu include the Spanish mussels and the beef “moelleux” mash potatoes. The picturesque venue has served as a movie set for movies such as Jack Nicholson’s “Something’s Gotta Give.”

ASK A BARTENDER: Thou Shalt Not Be an Insecure Fool. Turns out, dating is not for the weak of heart. So go forth in confidence! Q: I met this really cool guy recently – smart, funny, and charming.

Thing is, he’s a bartender at this trendy lounge. I’ve been told dating guys in the bar industry is a bad idea. Should I give him a chance, or move on to a nice suitand-tie type? – Cautious

A: Dear Cautious, I take it when you say bar industry guys are a “bad idea,” you’re referring to the risks of being emotionally invested in someone who is, by nature of job description, required to interact with women constantly. Okay, plus the women are usually drunk and scantily clad. Plus, bars are obviously pickup places. So I see your concern. But does that automatically mean your guy is a cheating, lying, inherently evil schmuck who is clearly man-whoring himself out to every halfway decent looking girl he sees through one eye closed and the other one squinting? No. Not necessarily. Or more specifically, not any more so than your door prize suit-and-tie guy. Here’s the deal. Bartenders aren’t encoded with a DNA sequence at birth for heartbreaking. But when it comes to cheating, a cheater is going to cheat. Cheaters are male and female. They can be bartenders or astronauts or circus clowns or the President. And if this bartender crush of yours has a

wandering eye, you can’t change it either way.

That said, know that if your bartender isn’t the sort to stray, there are still a few ways you could end

up shooting yourself in the foot and making your concerns a reality.

Send him straight into the arms of some drunk bar chick (or his co-worker!) by: Trying to force him to commit if he’s not ready. Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a guy muttering it to

you through clenched teeth, held at gunpoint as he burns pictures of his ex with one hand and

changes his Facebook relationship status with the other. It’s like a Chinese finger trap, except

when he pulls away and you tighten your hold, he’ll just gnaw his hand off at the wrist. Gross.

Constantly accusing him of cheating at work. Guys grow weary of being berated with nonstop

accusations about wild affairs at work. What wasn’t true at first may eventually occur when he starts

to resent you. He figures, why get the punishment without the reward?

Being super insecure. It’s annoying and more obvious than you think. And it’s the reason you would

do the two aforemetioned crazy things.

My advice is to give him a chance, and be confident in yourself. Get to know him and don’t make

bartending an unnecessary obstacle. I’d be more concerned with the fact that if you have a nine-to-

five and he works nights and weekends, you may not see each other much. Also, he can’t come to

your holiday parties because he’s working. As in: Fourth of July, New Years Eve, Cinco de Mayo,

Labor Day Weekend, Superbowl Sunday, Saint Patrick’s Day and maybe even Valentine’s Day. But

on the bright side – he’s smart, funny and charming. And you drink for free!

FEATURED BAND HEARTLESS BASTARDS

T

he Heartless Bastards create a sound that blends blues, roots rock, and an edge that’s all their own. Originating in Ohio, the group prepares to kick off their tour February 3, in their current hometown, Austin, Texas. Lead singer and founder Erika Wennerstrom stumbled across the groups name while playing a Mega Touch video game in a bar. The trivia question regarding Tom Petty’s band listed “Tom Petty and The Heartless Bastards” as an option. The irony of finding the band title by a chance encounter seems to be a common theme running through the bands journey. While on a regional tour in the early stages of the bands formation, The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney sat in the audience, and passed along the demo that eventually scored their label, Fat Possum Records. Fat Possum went on to release their debut album, Stairs and Elevators, in 2005. The first official record of the Ohio natives garnered exceptional reviews from the press. Publications such as Rolling Stone and The Village Voice praised the originality and swagger of the blues rock band, with

Wennertrom’s perfect blend of gravely emotion and passionate angst coming through her vocals. In 2006 the band released their sophomore album, All This Time, and in 2009 released their latest work to date, The Mountain. The Mountain was the first Heartless Bastards album produced by Mike McCarthy, whose resume includes work with Spoon, and Patty Griffin. The well received album prompted a gig on The Tonight Show, and various festival appearances including Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. The band also performed on the prestigious PBS program Austin City Limits in January of 2010. The group publicly stated that this particular performance meant a great deal, and felt honored to be invited to play an event that attracted such high caliber performers. With the state of rock music constantly under fire, The Heartless Bastards bring relevance and grit to a genre flooded with mediocrity. Growing up in Ohio, Wennertrom would often sneak into local music venues to watch some of her favorite bands. She states on the groups official website, “I would just see those people - my music heros - hanging out at the bar like everyone else. I could see myself in them. It gave me inspiration to do my own thing.”

FEATURED WEBSITE Romantic Calculations by MyLoveCal.com By Rachel Salas

W

ith Valentine’s Day approaching, people’s attention is naturally being directed towards the topics of love and romance. Now there is a fun and helpful website that helps match users to potential suitors based on real compatibility! MyLoveCal.com is a dating website that is designed to measure love compatibility based on the heavens, stars and astrology. Its goal is to improve the chemistry in existing and even new relationships, by allowing both parties to learn more about themselves in order to establish a successful partnership.

MyLoveCal’s homepage displays each sign of the zodiac, when the names and birthdates of both parties is entered, it instantly calculates matches and provides an overall percentage of real compatibility. Features of the site include creating a profile, finding friends, sending personalized messages, and rating characteristics--which allows users to rate each other based on 25 personality traits. Like Facebook and Myspace, users can document their daily moods, only MyLoveCal.com provides an overall mood analysis based on tracking the diverseness of moods, which can be helpful in understanding the way a person loves.

The truth is that astrology plays a large part in the way many people view characteristics that are harmonious with their own. According to Astrologer Pat Paquette, “Astrological compatibility is actually quite a complicated affair. There are two popular techniques, the composite method and synastry. The composite uses midpoints between each planet in the two individual natal charts to create one new relationship chart. Synastry involves comparing the positions of the planets, houses, and some mathematical points in the first person’s chart with those in the second person’s chart. I use synastry almost exclusively in my compatibility readings.” With a strong fascination centered around astrological love, MyLoveCal.com has found a way to incorporate the complex ideology of the cosmo’s effects on romance, paired with an entertaining and enjoyable way to find real-life love connections.

iami Beach might be known for it’s blue waters and blue sky, but recently the sun-kissed town added another blue to it’s list. Sydney Blu, an international DJ out of Canada has decided to ditch the cold weather and take up residency in one of the hottest party spots in the country. With the new year ahead us, NiteGuide decided to catch up with this rising star and find out her plans for the new year. Known for her ambitious personality and electric blue eyes, Sydney Blu makes it a point to stand out in a business dominated by men.

She currently holds the record on Beatport for the highest selling song ever produced by a female producer. Ever since her 2008 smash hit ‘Give It Up For Me’ released on Mau5trap Records, Sydney has gone on to develop her own record label “Blu Music” in order to trail blaze the path for other aspiring female DJs. With support from some of the biggest names in the business including Robbie Rivera, Tiesto, Deadmau5, Paul Oakenfold and Funkagenda, Sydney’s music has become synonymous with success. Not too bad for girl who claims to be from a small town in Ontario. We can now say Canada gave us more than just hockey. In 2011, Sydney hopes to catapult to the top of the charts once again. Starting in spring, she plans on releasing a new album on Nervous Records. The album will be called “Sydney Blu Live at Mansion” and will feature her performance at one of the best venues in the country. For all those who have never been to Mansion, just picture a perfect club. Now picture one of the hottest DJs performing at this club. If you want some inspiration, I just gave you another reason to check out this album. On March 23, Sydney will be hosting a party called “Blu Party” in Miami. The party is being held at Mokai during the Ultra Music Festival. If you have been living under a rock for the past decade, you probably still know that Ultra Music Festival is the greatest electronic festival in the world. Sydney wants to take this opportunity to make her event more than just a house warming party for Ultra. She plans on bringing the house down. After the spring, Sydney will continue to visit some of her favorite clubs around the world when she goes back on a world tour. It is safe to say that there is no stopping this Canadian. She is all business. Niteguide would like to wish the best for her and all her endeavors.

CLASH Fridays

Rain Nightclub [Las Vegas] Story by Christian Williams | Photography by Joe Fury / 9Group The competition for clubs and events in this day and age becomes progressively difficult with each passing moment. The ability to combine talent with mind-blowing visuals and simultaneously rounding up the most stunning go-go dancers around is a daunting task, but when done right, it is a recipe for success. An easy way to do this is to combine the one and only Rain Nightclub at Palms Casino Resort with the promoting genius of 9 Group, bringing in world-famous DJs to get the party going from zero to off the hook before you can say Vegas. In a venue known for Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto Vegas and the only U.S. hotel boasting an official Playboy Club, there’s no time to fool around in executing an event on the same stomping grounds, and having Diplo and Dave Fogg to kick off Clash Fridays is the only way to do such a thing. To say the launch party was a sensation would be an understatement, as it was more than just a night out on the town. Everything from the vibe to the potent drinks sent out a warm invitation to all who came out that they are not only welcome, but encouraged to come back. With DJs such as Hyphy Crunk, Kill The Noise and Dada Life making their way out to Clash in the weeks to come, it’s hard not to consider your Friday nights occupied for as long as you can look ahead. There’s only good things to say about this masterpiece of an event, especially after the January 14th kick-off event put the word “grand” in “grand opening.” With 25,000 square feet of room inside the luxurious club, there is plenty of space to dance around. I’ll go so far as to give 100 dollars to anyone who can find someone at Clash not enjoying themselves. Let the search stop at Rain every Friday night, for those that want the natural high that comes with world-class electro pumping so hard that it energizes you like that little pink bunny we always see on TV. The talent brought in for Clash Fridays is so impressive that it makes missing out on it feel like a crime, and the police force of your conscious is going to give you hell for not making the right decision. It’s next to impossible not to become a regular. See you all on Fridays!

Kitty’s Guide:

To Meeting and Mating in the Real World

“The L Word”

It’s February, which in my line of business means Valentine’s Day and our busiest time of the year. I haven’t had the most positive outlook on Valentine’s Day the last couple of years. After all, being single on Feb. 14th really sucks! So, when the NiteGuide Magazine editors told me that this would be the “Love Issue”, I knew I was in trouble! If you ask a group of people “What is love?” you will receive a variety of answers. Research has shown that love comes in different forms and styles and varies from person to person. So, I dug back into my Psych 101 notes and reacquainted myself with the six different Love Styles. Eros – A lot of passion, intimacy and intensity is felt by those who experience Eros love. Eros love has a strong sexual and emotional component. People who experience love this way often idealize love because they want to be emotionally and physically close to their partners at all times. This is usually the type of love that is felt at the beginning of a relationship. Storge – Storge love is a slow and gradual process. Getting to know someone comes before strong feelings. Storge love is similar to the love you feel for a close friend. In fact, people who experience Storge love often fall in love with their friends. Agape – Some people experience love as caregiving. Love creates an overwhelming desire to take care of your partner in a parental or nurturing way. Those who experience Agape love are attentive, caring, compassionate and kind. Agape is a more altruistic or selfless type of love. Ludus – For some, love is a game or a conquest. People who experience Ludus love may have multiple love interests and use manipulation to control and exploit their partners. Lying, cheating and deception are common with those who experience Ludus love – it’s all part of the game. Mania – Love that is out of control is Mania love. Those who experience Mania love have their lives turned upside down because of the overwhelming experience of love and it results in a loss of one’s self-identity. Those who feel Mania love fall in love quickly and their love consumes them. But, Mania love tends to burn out before it gets a chance to fully develop. People who experience Mania love make rash decision, have extreme delusions, feel like things are out of their control, and feel vulnerable. People who experience Mania love can be easily taken advantage of by Ludus lovers. Pragma – Pragma is a very practical approach to love. Love is not crazy or out of control, it is based on common sense and reason. People who experience Pragma love select their partners the same way most people make decisions about important life events. Picking a partner is based on careful consideration and reason. Most people experience a blend of two or three of these love styles and the love they feel for someone may flow from one type of love to another throughout their relationship. So, when thinking about love and relationships, sometimes it helps to keep in mind that love does not always mean the same thing to everyone. But it is important to understand how you experience and define love so you can choose positive relationships. And understand that the partner you choose may or may not experience love the same way you do. FEATURED RESTAURANT

A

nQi is the latest and most raved about Euro-Vietnamese cuisine in Orange County. Stemming from Crustacean Beverly Hills, the An Family proudly introduced its newest restaurant concept, AnQi Gourmet Bistro & Noodle Bar located at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, next to Bloomindales. AnQi’s lavish décor combines the theme of high fashion with a soft eastern flair. An extensive green-lit bar encompasses one of the decorative walls, displaying the restaurant’s finest liquors. An elaborate, elevated catwalk occupies a portion of the first floor, with calm waters resting below. This runway signifies AnQi’s special relationship with Bloomindales and the fashion Mecca in which the restaurant resides. Glass walkways, glazed wood, and fresh orchids embody this dynamically chic restaurant. The luxurious location features various fashion shows and is available for buyout. It holds 282 guests for seated events or 500 for receptions. The dining area measures 8,500 square feet. Executive Chef, Helene An, was named “The Mother of Fusion” by San Francisco food critic, Michael Bauer. Growing up, her family employed three chefs, each of a different ethnicity: French, Vietnamese, and Chinese. With an interest in different flavors, and adopted techniques from each chef and produced her own infused-style of cooking, which has resulted in AnQi’s unique-tasting cuisine. “I prefer flavors and tastes that are simple, refined and light. My culinary approach is based on the principles of Eastern Medicine, rich in anti-oxidants and healthy herbs, made from the finest ingredients, used only when they are in season and at their freshest. I am uncompromising when it comes to taste and health and I insist that my cuisine not only taste good, but also be good for you. I refer to this balance and the “Yin and Yang of Cooking,” An wrote on her website. Best known for An’s famous garlic noodles, AnQi features other delicious menu items such as: Nikiri Sake & Tsume Grilled Filet Mignon, Onion Caramelized Rack Of Lamb, Roasted Wild King Salmon, Buddha Delight,

Nik Richie “People Love to hate me

Log onto www.niteguidemag.com to see the behind the scenes video 26 niteguidemag.com

T

hedirty.com founder Nik Richie built an underground empire that offers a safe haven for users to anonymously post pictures of people they deem unsavory, providing an open forum for responses, usually led off by Richie himself. With traffic for the site reaching 15,000,000 a month, his controversial reality blog continues to attract attention. Love to hate him, or hate to love him, he’s candid, he’s straightforward, and for twenty minutes, he belonged to NiteGuide.

NiteGuide Mag: How did thedirty.com come to life? Nik Richie: I was originally from Mission Viejo. I dated a girl, and came out to Arizona. She was a total dream killer. I got stuck in Scottsdale for awhile, and it was boring. I went out into the nightlife scene and saw how douche baggy it was, so I created a website called dirtyscottsdale.com. It really took off, so I tried dirtynewport. com, and it went through the roof. I thought to myself, “maybe I could do this everywhere,” so I created thedirty.com. Now we’re in 106 different markets across the world, and getting 15 million visitors a month. It’s blown up. Thedirty.com itself is three years old and it’s the fastest growing blog site on the internet. NGM: Can you share some celebrity stories you’ve broken? NR: The biggest story that really brought us to the national light was when Matt Leinart had the beer bong at a party with 18 year old girls. When we got pictures of that the media didn’t stop for two weeks. That’s when we started peaking. We also broke the national story regarding Carrie Prejean (former Miss California), as far her whole Catholic thing being an act. We broke the story that she had sex tapes and put up the pictures where she’d been modeling naked. Donald Trump had to do a huge press conference for the actual photos. It was on USA Today, Oprah, all these crazy shows. I most recently did Dr. Phil. We had 1.8 million people come to the site in one day. It was one of Dr. Phil’s highest rated shows, where he tried to knock some sense into me, and I stood my ground. We’ve broken a lot of national stories. NGM: Can you tell me about The Dirty Army? NR: As the site grows we get content submitted by what I call the civilian paparazzi, or The Dirty Army as their known on the site. It’s kind of a cult following, where everyone is like minded and trying to kill time in our cubicles working for the man. They can come to thedirty.com everyday and see someone they know instead of seeing Britney Spears and normal regurgitated celebrity stuff over and over. NGM: How many times a month do you get sued?

NR: Zero. People look at my site and think “man this guy’s gonna get killed.” We’ve had our share of people try and come after us but we’ve won everything legally. We’ve set precedents with first amendment rights, and you can’t really beat it. I’m not the one taking these pictures, and I’m not the one saying these things. So people coming after us with these suits are frivolous. We come back and win. The only suits I have lost were default judgements I didn’t know about in the most random little towns. Up to this point we haven’t lost anything. NGM: Do you consider yourself a celebrity? NR: Life is different. Am I in the celebrity world? Yes. Do I want to be? No. The site has kind of forced that hand. When I first started the site I was underground, I never told anyone who I was. Then I got busted in Arizona for a DUI and it outed me as Nik Richie. I do get recognized, people do come up to me and tell me their a fan of my site, and I try to be as nice as possible. I haven’t had any crazy people come up to me and try and beat me up or anything. It’s weird, it’s definitely different. If I had it to do over I’d try to keep my personal life but it’s impossible now. NGM: Is it fair to say people love to hate you? NR: I think I have a lot of closet fans. They don’t want to admit that they’re huge fans of mine, for their own personal reasons. People laugh and love to hate me, I guess you could say. The people who hate the site are on there for six hours a day, and the one’s who love it are on there for two hours a day. It works both ways. I don’t hate anybody. I don’t have a vendetta against anyone. I’m just doing my job like any regular person, and enjoying life. NGM: Is the Nik Richie who responds to the picture posts the same Nik Richie in everyday life? NR: I would have to say Yes. I have no mental filter, but I have trained myself to keep my thoughts private in public settings. My mind never stops and I’m starting to realize that I am very unique individual. I might sit behind a computer screen to voice my thoughts, but at least I am honest.

The record has received high accolades from critics, and Trower credits his tour mates for achieving the live feel. It’s no surprise the Englishman enjoys the live feel of The Playful Heart, due to his love for creating a connection with audiences. Trower offered his take on where a crowd connection can lead. “Obviously everybody who starts out as a musician tries, and that’s exactly what they want to do. They want to make contact with people. If you’ve done that to some extent it’s incredibly rewarding, and inspires you to go on as well.” Catch Robin Trower on February 19th, at The Galaxy Concert Theatre in Santa Ana.

JANUARY IN REVIEW: FEATURED EVENTS Winter White Party The Highlands [Los Angeles] Story & Photography by Dave Orell

The Highlands Hollywood is located on the corner of Hollywood and Highland. The nightclub has 2 levels, a large stage, several dance floors, excellent sound system and multi media video that displays throughout the club. There are five bars, and four DJ booths playing a variety of music, and best of all ….two large balconies above Sunset Blvd with views of all the lights and downtown LA in the distance. On January 15th, Nasstive Entertainment’s held their 4th annual Winter White Party. Inviting all of Southern California to wear white and party under three indoor foam snow machines. Displayed on the video screens throughout the club were images and video clips of snowboarders on the slopes, winter snow scenes and various winter theme graphics. There was a Fashion Show with a runway ramp in the middle of the main stage and dance floor. The lovely ladies where modeling an array of casual, sexy, and fun white fashions that ranged from go-go, rave, and lingerie styles provided by Neff. Snow in the Highlands! Yes, it was snowing in Hollywood! Snow machines overhead blew out cool, crisp flakes of frozen foam. They felt cool and refreshing falling upon the crowd giving the feel of a real Winter White Party.

Queen Caveat

Saint Rocke [Hermosa Beach] Story by Heidi Darby | Photography by RG Benhard On January 28th, up and coming rockers Queen Caveat played at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach to an intimate and charged crowd. An opening band can often get swallowed up in the chatter and traffic of a venue, but this LA based four piece stormed the stage and held the crowds attention. Lead singer Lauren Little’s vocals displayed rich tones and meaty conviction, and her stage presence proved both entertaining and compelling. With Ben Epand on guitar, Will Weissman on bass, and Jesse Magnuson on drums, Queen Caveat delivers a well rounded and enticing sound. The band threw in a rather ballsy cover toward the end of their set, reworking Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing In The Name,” and did so with surprising effectiveness. The group’s original song “Oh No” translated beautifully to the stage at Saint Rocke, and has been performed live for Indie 103.1, and also for Beta TV. The rock group was also nominated for The Deli Magazine’s best emerging Los Angeles band, and recently wrapped up their two night stint at The Viper Room in Hollywood, sponsored by 98.7. Queen Caveat released a four song EP in August entitled Emptor, available on iTunes and Amazon. Keep up with the band’s touring schedule and check out their music at www.myspace.com/queencaveat. 44 niteguidemag.com

NiteGuide’s 1 year la celebration Drai’s [Hollywood]

Story by Heidi Darby | Photography by Daniel Yoshinari

NiteGuide Magazine teamed up with Drai’s in Hollywood to celebrate the hard earned success of the publications one year anniversary. Taking the elevator to the rooftop getaway that sits atop the W hotel, guests were greeted with breathtaking views of Hollywood, and had the ability to watch the sunset in style. After the sunset, the lights from the city coupled with the ambiance of the nightclub served as a precursor to the beautiful evening that lay ahead. Keeping the musical aspects of the night interesting, percussionist Boogie created a mood that provided patrons with a soulful groove, and an alternative to typical nightlife entertainment. Also keeping bodies on the dance floor was DJ Lucky Lou. The West Coast DJ spun a wide variety of tracks, and had the uncanny ability to keep energy levels high, and people moving. Also spinning for NiteGuide’s party was DJ Peter G, whose blend of house, rock, and hip hop, added yet another layer of musical talent. Guests were able to lounge in the rooftop outdoor pool area, which was embellished with red poolside chaise recliners and semi-private Moroccaninspired cabanas draped with white linen. Inside the Hollywood hotspot, snakeskin embossed couches and pillars with gold mirror tiles accented the inside of the nightclub. The dining experience offered French-American cuisine, the food itself working as an aphrodisiac. Sitting at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, clear views of the Hollywood sign, the Capitol records building, and the Hollywood hills gave the party a romantic setting, while the music, partygoers, and vibe of the celebration, made the total experience and unforgettable one.

1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Galaxy Concert Theatre [Santa Ana] Story by Emmanuel Cayanan | Dave Orell & Joseph Raymond

T

he doors at Galaxy Concert Theatre in OC opened at 9 p.m. sharp on Jan. 21 for NiteGuide Magazine’s 1-Year Anniversary Party. Ticket holders were greeted on the red carpet by the NGM cover girls, who hosted the evening, and complimentary shots from Tres Sietes Tequila, who sponsored the event along with Asahi Beer and Vitamin Water. With promotional help from Cali Connect, the milestone celebration would prove to be NGM’s largest production to date and a worthy contribution to SoCal’s nightlife scene. “I chose the Galaxy Theatre because it’s so fun to work with,” said Justin Stearman, who has built many strong relationships throughout the nightlife industry as owner and publisher of NGM. “It’s different from your typical club. The Galaxy was the only place I could see hosting under one roof the kind of event we were planning – 12 DJ’s, a live fashion show and some great live performances.” Gearing up for the celebration, Stearman and team customized the décor of the venue specially for this event, bringing in lounge furniture, stage designs by Monster Stage, backdrops, lighting and a long list of other things that added a bit of the ‘NiteGuide’ touch. With appearances by some of the personalities featured in our magazine and performances from our featured go-go dancers, the result was a live interpretation of the content we deliver to our readers monthly through NGM. It was as if each of the 13 issues we had published thus far had come to life before the eyes of the 1,000+ people who turned out for the event. DJ Homicide of SKAM Artist headlined an impressive lineup that included 11 other DJ’s with DJ Peter G as the night’s emcee. All four members of electronic rock group, Break the Circus, donned their signature masks as they delivered an

energetic live performance on the main stage. Following in their footsteps that evening was AcropolisRPM foursome, Speaker Junkies, with their infectious and vigorous brand of electro-pop music. With exclusive use of the venue, NGM filled every available space at the Galaxy. The floor level in front of the stage served as the main dance floor. Just outside of the main room, Lounge Apparel transformed the lobby area into a luxurious and sexy lounge setting with a second dance floor. There, DJ Slander spun an incredible set to an enthusiastic crowd. Those with VIP bracelets watched the mayhem unfold from an upper level balcony, and those looking to cool off lounged in the outdoor patio complete with neon-lit furniture. Things heated up when the Young & Reckless fashion show by WALK Industries began on the main stage. Hot young models showcased the edgy and innovative clothing line and lifestyle brand. Female models worked the stage in everything from provocative swimsuits to casual streetwear while the guys kept it simple, each showcasing a line of eye-catching t-shirts and treating the ladies in the crowd to an occasional glimpse of their abs. The success of the event mirrors a successful year for Stearman, who expects big things ahead for the magazine. “NiteGuide is still just a baby,” Stearman said. “It’s growing on a daily basis, and we are constantly broadening our focus to include different aspects of nightlife.” With expansions into the San Diego and Las Vegas markets expected this year, it will be interesting to see what venue in what city will house the next anniversary party. Until then, guests of this year’s event will put to use their complimentary anti-hangover shots of NoHo as they relive the night through the hundreds of photos posted on MyClubScene.com the next morning.

HOROSCOPE

AQUARIUS | FEBRuary 2011 By courtney seard

Happy Birthday Aquarius! You’re feeling energized, confident and strong. With Mars and the Sun in your rising sign nothing can stop you now! The mid-winter blues has you entering into this month rather sluggishly, but that trend doesn’t last long. With the lunar New Year upon us, and Neptune in your sign you’re launched into your New Year with clarity; and the ability to better tune into your needs desires and wants. The year of the Rabbit is a wonderful year for you Aquarius, as all the dreams you’ve dreamed and the hard work you’ve put into them will flourish. Mercury enters your 1st House of Personality and Identify, challenging how you think and feel about yourself. What marvelous placement as Mercury rules your communication giving you insight into your powerfully, delightful self. However, remember as a tree you must be firm and flexible, needing day and night to grow. The next few months are a time for learning and growth spurts. Life is yours for the taking! Aquarius Relationships: You are known and loved for your mysterious ways. You have a seductive kindness, a friendly flirty way; quite simply you’re the buzz of the party. This energy you emit always has you desired; and desiring more you are always open to new experience and this is the theme of your love relationships. If you are in a relationship, go into a deeper level. You will benefit greatly from this. If you are single dive down, explore the forbidden path and open up, let go. Aquarius Career: As in the year of the Rabbit, “Do the bunny hop...” You are masterful at what you do and it’s your time to actualize your plans. Continue to move forward, spreading your wings and taking the next steps. If this means taking a class, more training or hours doing what it takes, this is the time to act. If you are not happy in your current situation, have faith in your skills and look. Keep your spirits high and your head up, this is your year! Power Days: 4, 15, 21
