COLLISION DIVISION DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

2019 Alliance Annual Meeting and Leadership Conference: “Rev Up Your Game”

by Matthew Feehan, Collision Division Director

It was Abraham Lincoln that said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend four hours sharpening my axe.” Every progressive-minded person is aware that it is important to be prepared. The saying “Sharpening your Axe” is where preparedness meets opportunity. If you prepare well, when opportunities present themselves you will recognize and take advantage of them. If you want to lead well, you must prepare your mind. In an ever-changing industry, we are all faced with daily challenges. Often you can feel like you’re out on an island. You may even think that you are the only one with these types of challenges. Well, I have news for you – the same wind blows on all of us. The challenges you face are not reserved just for you. If you want to sharpen an axe, you use a sharpening stone. If you want to sharpen your mind, you need new words and ideas. The purpose of the 2019 Leadership Conference is to help you sharpen your mind and come up with some new ideas to address an issue that has been holding you or your company back. It’s a way for you to spend quality

time with likeminded people. The roundtable discussions are a fantastic way to collaborate with talented industry professionals and get real answers. There is just something special when a group of people sit down and “talk shop.” None of us are as smart as all of us. Last year, I received some fantastic advice. I thought to myself, “I could have spent a month of Sundays trying to come up with a better idea and not done so.” I was so happy I attended the conference. This year, the lineup is off-the-charts with talented presenters, not to mention the fantastic vendors. If you would like to go further, faster, with less effort in 2019, you owe it to yourself to be there. If you go, bring a pen and notebook. Be prepared to take some good notes. After all, you don’t want to leave your future millions to your memory, do you? Be one of the attendees that says, “I got away with the good stuff.” Come visit me at my roundtable, I will be one of the facilitators. We can talk shop. See you on April 11!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Many New Faces and Voices as 2019 Session Begins by Kevin Walli, AASP-MN Lobbyist

Everyone who has business before the state Legislature will have a busy start to the 2019 session as we try to get to know all of the new participants in the process. There are 39 new members of the House of Representatives: 34 newly-elected DFL members and five newly-elected Republican members. As a result of the change of control in the House – from the Republicans to the Democrats – every Committee Chair will now shift over to the DFL. This means we have a new group of Chairs to get to know, with our attention being focused on the Commerce Committee, now chaired by Representative Laurie Halverson (DFL-Eagan). We have already taken the time to meet briefly with Chair Halverson and we are seeking a time to have a more thorough discussion on issues of concern to the auto repair industry. With the election of Governor Tim Walz, we will see a new set of Commissioners to lead all of the state administrative agencies. The agency with whom AASPMN has had the closest working relationship is the Department of Commerce. The new Commerce Commissioner is Steve Kelley. Commissioner Kelley served in the State House from 1993 to 1997 and in the State Senate from 1997 to 2006. The district he

represented in the Legislature included the City of Hopkins. It has been our tradition to meet with the Commissioner of Commerce on a regular basis. We will schedule such an opportunity in the coming weeks once Commissioner Kelley gets his feet on the ground in his new job. Our state Senators did not stand for re-election in 2018. Their four-year term will be up in time for the 2020 General Election. We will be working with the same Republican leadership in the Senate – including Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa) and Senate Commerce Chair Gary Dahms (R-Redwood Falls). We will renew our efforts to visit with them to discuss repair industry concerns. In the coming weeks, we will be working to provide information to members regarding your newly-elected or re-elected legislators. The first priority will be to determine the AASP-MN member repair shops that are located in districts of Commerce Committee members. Once we have helped make these connections, we would welcome your assistance in developing relationships with the new legislators so that we have more opportunities to share industry concerns with policymakers. We look forward to working with you this session.

ESTIMATING TIPS Mitchell: Labor Times - The labor times shown in the Guide are in hours and tenths of an hour (6 minutes) and are for replacement with new, undamaged parts from the vehicle manufacturer on a new, undamaged vehicle. Any additional time needed for collision damage access, alignment pulls, non-original equipment or used parts should be agreed upon by all parties. Times for some operations are applicable after necessary bolted, attached or related parts have been removed. Exceptional circumstances, including all the suboperations or extra operations, are indicated as notes throughout the text or are identified in the Procedure Explanations. The actual time taken by individual repair facilities to replace collision-damaged parts can be expected to vary due to severity of collision, vehicle condition, equipment used, etc. Audatex: Suspending Engine and Mounts - Is addressed on page 157 in the FAQ section of the Audatex DBRM Guide found here: https://www.training.audatex.us/otc4viewdoc.asp?ID=802 Question: Why does the labor report only show minimal labor related to the engine and mounts (Combination Engine) when the engine must be suspended using a special tool? Answer: There are a number of different tools and methods that could be used to support a drivetrain. Each may require different levels of preparation. The Audatex labor allowances do not take into account any special

equipment or procedures necessary to prepare the drivetrain to support and only allows the labor to raise and support (Combination Engine) after the engine is prepared for the support tool and any special tools are mounted. All Three Systems: Detail and Polishing Operations Users can quickly compare included and not-included operations for detail and polishing operations across all three estimating system IPs using the chart found here: http://degweb.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/DEGDetail-and-Polishing-Chart.jpg Audatex: Mirror Overhaul Feature - Starting in January 2019, Audatex began to support overhaul operations for some door mirrors. Mirror overhaul applies when a mirror assembly consists of many individual parts, i.e., side markers, cameras, puddle lamps, motors, sensors, etc. The overhaul operation includes the labor time to transfer individual mirror components from the damaged mirror to a new one. This new operation eliminates the need to search and add R&I for each mirror component which, in turn, saves time and increases accuracy. The first five files with this enhancement include: • 2018-2019 Honda Accord • 2019-2019 Nissan Altima • 2015-2019 Ford F150 Super Crew • 2015-2019 Ford F150 Stdr Cab • 2013-2019 Ford Escape All future files, new and updated, will have the mirror overhaul operation added when and if applicable.

Note: The estimating databases are all intended to be used as a GUIDE ONLY - it is important to remember that the auto body professional performing the repair is in a position to thoroughly inspect, diagnose and identify the methodology and their unique cost of the vehicle damage repair. You can view these tips and others on the DEG website,WWW.DEGWEB.ORG.

She has been teaching Car Care Clinics for Women for over 10 years and, along with other female shop owners, created a turn-key workbook for other shops to use to host their own Car Care Clinics. She is the author of “How to Buy a Great Used Car” and also co-authored the book “Whatever Happened to Outstanding Customer Service.” She has spoken on TV and radio and has been a frequent guest of the automotive ‘Remarkable Results Radio’. Amy is very involved in the Auto Care Industry on the national stage. She is the past president of Women in Auto Care and a member of SEMA, SBN, WiAC and ASA. Brian Sump is not your typical shop owner. A former professional athlete, Brian had never turned a wrench in a shop before starting Denver-based Avalon Motorsports in 2007. But in the years since, he has used his business acumen and a detailed, processbased management philosophy to grow the German-specialty shop into an industry leader. In 2014, he and his team opened Urban Autocare, a second facility in Denver, to cater to the general repair market and is under contract to open a third shop. Brian has been recognized with multiple industry and business awards including: Motor Age Top 10 Shop, BBB Torch Award winner, ASA’s AutoInc Top 10 Websites and was the cover subject of Ratchet+Wrench magazine’s premier issue in July, 2012. He currently sits on the Board of Transformers Mastermind, an auto shop owner and manager development organization in Colorado. He is also a writer and instructor for Ratchet+Wrench. There is no one in collision repair who hasn’t heard of Mike Anderson. He is an acclaimed champion of everything that is, or could be right about the collision repair industry. As one of the most knowledgeable people in his field, he is a sought after speaker, author and consultant who can discuss and teach on a wide range of topics relating to everything – from the politics affecting collision repair, to researching repairs properly via technology, to giving and getting the best from insurers, and performing an exactly correct repair – just to name a few things! Mike is the former owner of Wagonwork Collision Centers, two highlyacclaimed shops located in Alexandria, Virginia. Currently, Mike owns and operates Collision Advice, an industry research, reference and consulting business. In addition, Mike also serves as a facilitator for Axalta’s highly-recognized Business Council 20 Groups in both the U.S. and Canada. He also facilitates numerous courses for the Axalta Performance Services Educational Series.
