October Newsletter Hello again! As the month of November rolls around we have to remember to keep our Key Clubs active. It’s easy to get distracted and overwhelmed with other things this time of year so I hope that we can all stay on track and remain organized. The winter months should be filled with Key Club events and as much service as possible. In this coming month many of you will now have established members to keep track of and utilize in creative and exciting events! As my very long email said, please be sure to visit your Kiwanis clubs at least once and asap. They are a valuable resource and important member of the Key

Club family. Feel free to invite them to some of your events and please let me know if you do not know which Kiwanis club you belong to. By now many secretaries should have a few things to record in the CMRFs. I greatly hope to receive every single form this month! Please let me know asap if you need any help filling them out and send them to me by the 8th. Also, thank you to all who came to Fall Rally! I hope you had a great time and I expect to see many of you and more at District Convention (DCON)!

Things to Remember: - Club Monthly Report Forms (CMRFs) due November 8th! - Dues! Regular Dues deadline: Dec. 1st Early Bird Dues deadline: Nov. 1st

Make Halloween Count! By: Jiayun Fang, LTG Division 14

As you know, UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) is one of the Service Partners of Key Club International. Key Club International focuses on Operation Uruguay: Protecting the Rights of Children. In Uruguay, the second smallest country in South America, 44% of the population under the age of 18 lives in extreme poverty. There is a clear lack of motivation and opportunity because only 1 in 3 students graduate from high school. For Operation Uruguay, Key Club set a goal of $1.5 million for Trick‐or‐Treat for UNICEF. All funds will go toward building and maintaining cultural and educational centers, like Mandalavos Center, which provide sanctuaries for children needing support, education, and health care. (More details http://www.unicefusa.org/partners/ngo/key‐club‐ international.html) This year, the NJ District of KCI has set a fundraising goal of $33,190.25 for UNICEF fundraising. Besides going door to door, there are many others ways to spread the word about Trick or Treat for UNICEF. For example, you can organize a school–wide or community‐wide can shake or penny war. Then, order and put costume boxes in common places to attract attention. In addition, feel free to hold any fundraising event from a UNICEF Spooktacular (see recipe in International Programs Cookbook of Service) to a pumpkin carving contest! Get your teachers excited by having them donate for a casual dress day. Anything that you can think of can contribute toward this goal. Please send all donations by mail to P.O. Box 447 Roseland, NJ 07068. Make all checks payable to Key Club International with a memo for UNICEF. Have a safe Halloween and have fun Trick‐or‐Treating for UNICEF!

Club Visits One way to keep in touch and stay connected is through club visits. If your Key Club is having a meeting or event coming up let me know and I’ll try to come. Visits are the best form of communication that we can have together because rather than virtual interaction I get to see you in person and observe all the great things your club is up to. I can also bring with me resources, help you with various ceremonies, and make your lives altogether easier. I can also speak to your clubs about exciting new things happening with Key Club in general. Please let me know if there is a particular date you would like (such as a club meeting or event) me to visit.

PLANNING is KEY! This is the time to think ahead! If you know of an event you want to have, pick a date and location now. Ask your school for approval ahead of time so you know if you must alter your plans at all. Also, remember to think about asking local restaurants or grocery stores for food and don’t forget to ask me or Kiwanis for help anyway! Children’s Specialized Hospital Week: October 30 –November 7 Key Club Week: November 1 –November 7! November is a great time for events!

COMMUNICATION is KEY too! Staying in touch is the best tool we have. The CMRFs are also an important communication factor. I want to emphasize how vital the forms are. They telling statistically how your club is doing and get passed on to the governor and my advisors. By staying in touch and connected our division can work together, become friends, and share ideas. Luckily communication is not only effective, but it is easy too! You can call me, shoot me an e-mail, or even send me a text. Talk to me if you’re ever having trouble with your club, want some advice on a service project, or you want your club, officer, or event to be featured in my next newsletter!

In the words of District Governor Rachel Orbach, Fall Rally 2010 was an epic success. The Rally began early in the morning at 9:30 on Sunday, October 10 with each member of the District Board accessorized looking like their selected musician, ranging from your very own Lieutenant Governor representing Jay-Z to District Treasurer Devan Corona wearing dreads to resemble Lil Wayne! The arena filled up with over 2,400 anxious and excited Key Club members, ready to sing the songs of service! The key note speaker this year was Amy Mansue, the President/CEO of an organization we’ve all come to know and love, Children’s Specialized Hospital. Another guest speaker was International Trustee to the New Jersey District, the loveable Will Robertson. Other speakers included Rosemarie Gibardi, the NJ District Kiwanis Governor-Elect as well as NJ District Circle K Governor, Robert Acerra. In addition to the Rally, Key Club members also participated in the annual “Tools for Schools” Drive and brought in over 1,156 POUNDS OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES! I’d like to thank all those who attended the Rally, for those underclassmen who couldn’t make it, there’s always next year!
