Division 18 Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 4

Greetings from Your LTG…

In this issue!

Hello Division 18! As summer is slowly coming to a close, it is time to prepare ourselves for the service year ahead. Take the last few days of summer to prepare yourself for the upcoming month. Be sure that you are ready for your first meeting and that you’re ready to make sure everyone in your school knows how rewarding Key Club can be. Although we all dread the start of school, there are some important and fun key club events to look forward to. For those of you who have not attend an Officers Training Conference (OTC), please know that I will be scheduling one with you and your executive board in September. Also in September, Fall Regional Training Conferences will be held at Millburn High School (see page 2). Fall Rally, the largest percentage gathering of Key Clubbers in the world, will be OCT 10th. With many things to look forward to, this service year is off to a great start. If you have any questions about anything, please don’t hesitate to ask. Yours in Caring, Service, and Friendship,

3,000 Key Clubbers. 13 Roller Coasters. 1 Fall Rally. Picture a beautiful October day. Now imagine it in the backdrop, reflecting over Kingda Ka’s monstrous 456-foot high peak. Finally, imagine this stunning sight in the distance, as you sit in an arena with 3,000 other Key Clubbers, cheering to win the Spirit Stick, and are getting excited to perform an amazing year of service. That’s right! On October 10th, 2010, the New Jersey District of Key Club will be holding their annual Fall Rally at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ! Be a part of a record 3,000 attendees, as we Sing the Songs of Service to celebrate the start of what is shaping up to be one of the best year’s the New Jersey District of Key Club has had! Here are five reasons why this year’s Fall Rally will be place to be on October 10th: 1. Dress up as your favorite musician to participate in our celebrity look-alike competition and you could win a gift basket! 2. You’ll get to cheer for your division as you compete to win the coveted Spirit Stick. 3. Keynote speaker Amy Mansue, the CEO of Children’s Specialized Hospital, will be speaking on the importance of our service to CSH. 4. Tools4Schools will be holding a school supplies collection drive for students in underprivileged schools. 5. You’ll have the chance to brave some of the world’s greatest coasters for a price lower than regular admission!

A message from the PR Committee Written By Co-Chairpersons: Nicole Darrah & Brian Cheung

The Public Relations Committee was formerly known as the District Relations Committee… until it was changed back in the 2009-2010 service year. The general idea of this committee is simple: Publicize + Build + Inform = Public Relations. Throughout the service year, this committee is assigned to create PowerPoints and videos, contact the local media, write articles, create brochures, and to overall publicize Key Club and its work in any way possible. We cannot do what we do without YOU, the members of this organization! It takes work on our part, but it’s a very simple thing for you to do. Why do you love Key Club? What makes Key Club so great? What does Key Club give to you? Instead of answering these questions in your head, answer them by telling your friends! By letting your friends know all about the wonderful thing that is Key Club, you are doing exactly what this committee entails: publicizing! If you have any questions or comments about the Public Relations Committee, contact co-chairs Nicole Darrah (njkceditor@gmail.com) or Brian Cheung (ltgcheung@aol.com)!

SERVICE

Do you have a desire to improve your leadership? Do you want to want to make new friends with similar interests as you? What if I told you that both of these will happen in the same weekend? This isn’t a lie; I’m talking about Key Leader Weekend! Key Leader is run by Kiwanis International with the mission of providing a “lifechanging experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership.” The weekend is designed to kick-start a lifelong process of personal leadership growth and development. The program focuses on leadership in three communities: the local community, the state/national community, and the global community. It is a highly esteemed program in New Jersey and its greatness is directly related to the high remarks of our District on the national level.

LEADERSHIP

This year, Key Leader will be held Friday, December 10th through Sunday, December 12th at Camp Lebanon in Lebanon New Jersey. It is open to students grades 9-12 from any town. There are no restrictions on the number of attendees from any school, nor do you have to be a Key Clubber to attend. Registration is $175 for all Key Club members, which includes a $25 grant from the Kiwanis International Foundation, and $200 for any non-member. Register by October 15th to ensure your spot in the program. Speak to your Lieutenant Governor about how to sign up or if you have any questions – they’re more than ready to help! See you there!

An Advocacy Announcement Over 738,900 people in New Jersey live at or below the poverty level. 27% of children in New Jersey live in low-income households. 1 out of 5 families in New Jersey do not earn enough to afford basic necessities such as food and housing. These are all serious problems that are occurring in our own state, and they are rapidly increasing. However, we have the power to change them. That is why we are so excited to announce that the focus for the District Programs Committee for the 2010-2011 Service Year is Poverty. (All facts can be found on the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition Website: http://njahc.org/hunger-innj.html.) This year, the committee will be dedicated to giving each club an opportunity to choose how they would like to go about advocating and serving while guiding them along the way. We chose to run the committee this way because each community is hit with poverty in different ways. Some examples of ways to advocate are to advertise as much as possible (such as posters and videos), and to contact your local government representative and attend press events. An easy way to get support would be to not ask for money, but instead trying to provide supplies, food, and service. Clubs could provide a “service tip of the month” and statistics to give the members easy pieces of information to follow and spread. Clubs and divisions could also participate in service activities such as: Collecting school supplies at Fall Rally Collecting food at your school and community throughout the year (not just holidays) A “Fill the Bus with Food” fundraiser (line up and pass the food to the bus) Volunteering at shelters/food kitchens Shop rite/Cost Co will give gift cards Gathering food left over at sporting venues Donating to Good Will Helping with Jennifer’s Closet Collecting prescription glasses or other necessities Asking local businesses to donate Seven Eleven gives leftover food to charity

Presidents Council Meeting A Presidents Council Meeting is an informal (but mandatory) gathering of all the club presidents in our division (James Caldwell High School, Livingston, Mount St. Dominic, West Essex, West Orange, and Cedar Grove). At each PCM we will discuss different service projects, updates from the NJ District, important upcoming events, and discuss what’s going on in each others clubs. Not only will they be held many times during the year, but one will be coming up shortly so keep on the look out.

Officers Training Conferences An officers training conference (OTC) is an informal (but mandatory) gathering of me and each member of a club’s executive board. At the OTC, I will go over, in detail, each of your executive roles, your weekly, monthly, and annual duties, and specifically what everyone’s job entails. (You will also receive your official training manual). I will also update you all on Children's Specialized Hospital, Fall Rally, and answer any questions that you all may have. It is very important to attend an OTC, for not only will they benefit you, but they will also benefit your club. For more information, please email me at ltgdiv18@gmail.com.

A main goal of mine for this service year is to be in constant contact with each club, officer, and general member of division 18. Along with emails, texts, newsletters, and phone calls, I have created a new website dedicated to everything related to Division 18 and Key Club. I will be constantly updating this site as a place where officers and members can come to for ideas, suggestions and information about the new Jersey District and Key club International. You can access the site by visiting www.kcdiv18.webs.com. Feel free to visit it any time. I look forward to your input and suggestions! â˜ş
