Back to School. Back to Key Club. by Brian Cheung LTG Div 20

Ready?

Hello Division 20! I hope all of you have enjoyed your summers! I apologize for being away from home for so long, but my summer was very eventful with my travels overseas. But right now, it’s that time again. The summer work cram is over, the beach umbrellas are folded up, and the fresh new binders and prepared in your backpack. Welcome back to school, and welcome to the start of Key Club fever. I cannot emphasize the importance of the first month of the school year; it is the diving board that begins the service year. Fall Rally registration, new service projects, and other start-of-the-year activities are waiting. This issue of my newsletter will focus on many of the events and happenings that you need to be aware of. Please stay updated with the calendar, and be sure to stay in contact with me. Again, communication is key to success! Regardless, I wish all good luck and good fun as the Key Club festivities flare up in Division 20. Please keep your eyes peeled for the latest updates from myself and the New Jersey District! Yours in Caring and Service,

Fall Regional Training Conferences. Get Trained. by Brian Cheung LTG Div 20 Every year, the New Jersey District of Key Club holds two seasons for the Regional Training Conferences (RTCs). These RTCs are events designed to help you learn more about Key Club, as well as ways to use Key Club to better your world. They are filled with icebreakers, games, and workshops. Also, breakfast and lunch is provided! There is no cost to attend an RTC; just bring yourself and some Key Club enthusiasm! To make travel easier, three separate RTCs will be held at three locations across the state. South: Central Regional High School (Sunday, September 19) North: Millburn Senior High School (Saturday, September 25) Central: J.P. Stevens High School (Sunday, September 26) For Division 20, the closest location is Millburn Senior High School, on September 25th. I encourage all who did not attend the Spring RTCs to attend this event. Check out pages 6 and 7 for more specific information about the Fall Regional Training Conferences.

Get Inspired. by Tom Kraeutler LTG Div 7 Do you have a desire to improve your leadership? Do you want to want to make new friends with similar interests as you? What if I told you that both of these will happen in the same weekend? This isn’t a lie; I’m talking about Key Leader Weekend! Key Leader is run by Kiwanis International with the mission of providing a “life-changing experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership.” The weekend is designed to kick-start a lifelong process of personal leadership growth and development. The program focuses on leadership in three communities: the local community, the state/national community, and the global community. It is a highly esteemed program in New Jersey and its greatness is directly related to the high remarks of our District on the national level. This year, Key Leader will be held Friday, December 10th through Sunday, December 12th at Camp Lebanon in Lebanon New Jersey. It is open to students grades 9-12 from any town. There are no restrictions on the number of attendees from any school, nor do you have to be a Key Clubber to attend. Registration is $175 for all Key Club members, which includes a $25 grant from the Kiwanis International Foundation, and $200 for any non-member. Register by October 15th to ensure your spot in the program. Speak to your Lieutenant Governor about how to sign up or if you have any questions – they’re more than ready to help! See you there! Check Out http://slp.kiwanis.org/ KeyLeader/Home.aspx for general information about the program.

International Convention 2010 A Recap from Memphis, Tennessee by Brian Cheung LTG Div 20

From July 4th to July 12th, the New Jersey District left for the 2010 Key Club International Convention in Memphis, Tennessee. The tour stopped in Sandusky, Ohio to visit the best theme park in the world: Cedar Point Amusement Park. The park was decked out in insane rides like the Mantis and the Top Thrill Drag Racer. After staying at the park for a day and a half, the tour left for Tennessee to visit attractions like Graceland, Beale Street, the Civil Rights Museum, and the Memphis Zoo. Then came the convention itself. It was a fun-filled festival of Key Club, celebrating a fantastic service year and welcoming a new one. Speakers like Bo Schafer, Neil Sylvester, and Clay Aiken all inspired us with words of wisdom. Key Clubbers continued to get fired up with a new international focus project, called “the Eliminate Project. You can learn more about this program at the upcoming RTC, as well as at http://sites. kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/home.aspx. The festivities continued with fun activities like the Meet and Greet session and the two themed dances. You can check out photos at http://njkeyclub.org/icongallery.html. Join us next year, when the NJ District Board sets off for Phoenix, Arizona!

An Advocacy Announcement Over 738,900 people in New Jersey live at or below the poverty level. 27% of children in New Jersey live in low-income households. 1 out of 5 families in New Jersey do not earn enough to afford basic necessities such as food and housing. These are all serious problems that are occurring in our own state, and they are rapidly increasing. However, we have the power to change them. That is why we are so excited to announce that the focus for the District Programs Committee for the 2010-2011 Service Year is Poverty. (All facts can be found on the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition Website: http://njahc.org/hunger-in-nj.html.) This year, the committee will be dedicated to giving each club an opportunity to choose how they would like to go about advocating and serving while guiding them along the way. We chose to run the committee this way because each community is hit with poverty in different ways. Some examples of ways to advocate are to advertise as much as possible (such as posters and videos), and to contact your local government representative and attend press events. An easy way to get support would be to not ask for money, but instead trying to provide supplies, food, and service. Clubs could provide a “service tip of the month” and statistics to give the members easy pieces of information to follow and spread. Clubs and divisions could also participate in service activities such as: Collecting school supplies at Fall Rally Collecting food at your school and community throughout the year (not just holidays) A “Fill the Bus with Food” fundraiser (line up and pass the food to the bus) Volunteering at shelters/food kitchens Shop rite/Cost Co will give gift cards Gathering food left over at sporting venues Donating to Good Will Helping with Jennifer’s Closet
