April/May Newsletter

An Introduction from Your 2010-2011 Lieutenant Governor Who is Brian Cheung? Things I Like

About this Newsletter by Brian Cheung LTG Div 20 What’s up Division 20? Get pumped for an awesome year of service! I’ve got some fantastic ideas to bring to our division and the entire district. I look forward to working with all of you, and I hope that you carry as much Key Club enthusiasm as I do! My name is Brian Cheung, and I am currently a junior at Morris Knolls High School (sorry, Randolph). Before being elected as an lieutenant governor, I was the vice-president of the Morris Knolls Key Club. There, I made a conscious effort to improve communication by building a club website (mkkeyclub. moonfruit.com, which won 1st place in the Club Website Awards at DCON!) and making a text message alert system. As a lieutenant governor, I still emphasize the importance of communication. The entire Key Club infrastructure relies on the successful exchange of ideas. This is the center of my philosophy as your lieutenant governor! Through newsletters, I can communicate great information about our division and our district! I hope you enjoy them. I honestly look forward to the next year, and I encourage you to email, call, text, or contact me by any means if you have any comments, questions, or concerns. Even if you want to just say hi! I always have an open ear for my fellow Key Clubbers! Yours in Caring and Service,

Key Clubbing at DCON 2010!

700 Key Clubbers. 3 Days. 1 Sweet Experience by Brian Cheung LTG Div 20 Is there anything better than three days of Key Clubbing? If you can think of something, you clearly aren’t familiar with the New Jersey District Convention (abbreviated as DCON). Close to 700 Key Clubbers from around the New Jersey District flocked to King of Prussia in Pennsylvania to celebrate a year of hard work. The event, hosted from April 16th to April 18th at the Valley Forge Convention Center, unified these attendees under the theme “travelling the world of service.” The cosmopolitan nature of the convention was perfect for the appearance of Mr. Paul Palazzolo, the Kiwanis International President. With the help of his deep and charismatic voice, Mr. Palazzolo inspired the audience with stories of his travels and how they translate into motivation for service. There were also exciting appearances by Mr. Lance Incitti (of Division 20’s very own Denville Kiwanis), Mr. Mark Esposito (New Jersey District Kiwanis Governor), and Robert Acerra (New Jersey Circle K District Governor).

The inspiring atmosphere continued into the saturday morning workshops. Key Clubbers enjoyed presentations on UNICEF, Public Speaking, and KFamily Relations. There were also some awesome interactive workshops, like Icebreakers and Belly Dancing. Although most of these workshops starred the Lieutenant Governors, the everyday Key Clubber had the opportunity to share the spotlight with con-

tests like the Talent Show and Speech Competition. Winners in such contests had the chance to perform on stage on saturday night. Clubbers also got to dance their Key Club excitement off at the two dances: one on friday night and another on saturday night. The Lieutenant Governors were also raffled off for a slow dance on saturday night, with all proceeds going to charity. The end of DCON came on Sunday morning, where the current district board was tearfully retired by District Administrator Barrie Werfel. Despite the sadness in waving a year goodbye, Sunday morning also saw the beginning of the 2010-2011 District Board. And with the end of the 64th Annual New Jersey District Convention came the birth of a new year, a new district board, and a new vision for Key Club. I hope to see you all there at the 65th Annual DCON!

CMRF

Club Monthly Report Forms

ICON

International Convention

Each club secretary must submit a CMRF by the 10th of every month. These forms help the district and myself stay updated on the club’s work and progress. CMRFs can be completed using the PDF-maker at http://njkeyclub.org/resources/cmrf or by downloading the Microsoft Word template online at http:// njkeyclub.org/resources/officers. Remember to send CMRFs to District Secretary Kevin Sun,your Kiwanis advisor, your Zone Administrator, and myself. CMRFs are due at the 10th of each month.

Always wanted to see Graceland? Do you love Relient K? How about Clay Aiken? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you should come to Internation Convention, an annual gathering of over 1500 Key Clubbers from across the globe. This year’s ICON is going to be at Memphis Tennessee. The New Jersey District will be leaving for Memphis on July 4th, and will return on July 11th. On the way, stops will be made at the Cedar Point Amusement Park, Graceland, and the Civil Rights Museum. Check out the ICON flyer on page 6! To obtain a primer for the trip or if you just need some more information on how to attend, email me or District Administrator Barrie Werfel (at NJDAWerfel@aol.com or 973-985-4096). Primers for the trip are due by May 15th. Hope to see you there!

Regional Training Conference

RTC

An RTC is a massive gathering of Key Clubbers from a designated region of New Jersey. At the RTC, the attendees are trained in how to have a successful year of service. Along with helpful workshops, the RTCs are a great way to meet fellow Key Clubbers from the area. There are Spring and Fall RTCs, and it is mandatory for all executive club members to attend one RTC. For the Spring, there is an RTC in North Jersey and South Jersey. May 22nd: Brick Memorial High School (South) May 23rd: Morris Knolls High School (North) See the attached flyer on pages 7 and 8 for more information, or contact me. Remember: Morris Knolls is in our division, so it is the easiest for you to attend!

Officer’s Training Conference

OTC

Officer’s Training Conferences are get-togethers of divisional executives, organized by me. At these meetings, I personally train each executive in their position. It is mandatory for each executive club member to attend one OTC. Stay tuned for my first OTC...it will be soon!

President’s Council Meeting

PCM

President’s Council Meetings are frequent gatherings of club presidents, organized by me. It is mandatory for club presidents to attend each and every PCM, although I encourage other executives to come as well. Stay tuned for my first PCM...it will be soon!
