SPRING INTO LIFESTYLE

Winter has been fun, but let’s face it — warm weather is where it’s at! However, as the saying goes, beware the Ides of March. March brings milder temperatures, but the weather can still be unpredictable. With that in mind, we’re excited to jump right into our Spring issue without hesitation.

This issue is packed with great features and new marketing partners. At Lifestyle, we don’t just sell ads — we seek out outstanding businesses and organizations we truly believe in and want to promote.

That brings us to our first feature: Blue Rascal Distillery in Hammonton. When you visit, you’ll be amazed by the rustic yet upscale atmosphere and their incredible craft cocktails. This category is growing for a reason! After sampling a few of their signature drinks, we couldn’t resist purchasing the Blueberry Liqueur to mix with lemonade and vodka — our simplified take on their Rascaltini. But to get the full experience, you’ll want to visit and enjoy their handcrafted cocktails made with fresh ingredients and herbs.

Next, we flew over to The ByrdCage, formerly the Good Dog Bar. While we were sad to see Good Dog go, we couldn’t imagine better new owners than Jason Tell, Giulietta Consalvo, and Richard Helfant, who have created an inclusive and welcoming space.

We’re also excited to introduce Michael Pedicino — therapist and well-known musician. Perhaps you’ve seen him perform at a South Jersey Jazz event? While we’ll be showcasing Michael’s many talents in a future issue, in the meantime, don’t hesitate to give him a call — he offers free consultations!

Another warm welcome goes to Compliance Services Agency, which offers an innovative workplace violence protection policy. In a conversation with owner and friend Lee Stokes, we were shocked to learn how common workplace violence has become — and how you can take steps to protect yourself and your family.

We also welcome Bruno’s Italian Market in Ventnor, located near Vassar Square Condominiums. This hidden gem offers an incredible selection of imported Italian specialties, wines, sandwiches, and charcuterie boards.

And, of course, we can’t forget Atlantic City. We’re excited about the newly refreshed Visit Atlantic City (formerly Meet AC). They have now merged with the former DO/AC to form a single organization, providing cohesive marketing for both group business and Atlantic City’s entertainment, restaurants, and resorts.

As spring approaches, we have some fantastic perennial events on the horizon:

• The Cape Atlantic Community College Restaurant Gala is Going Broadway at Harrah’s Event Center on March 27. It’s a perfect night to enjoy delicious food while supporting local culinary students.

• The Mosaic 5K (formerly Seashore Gardens) takes place on April 27—a beautiful day on the boardwalk dedicated to supporting those with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

• Bay Atlantic Symphony’s tribute to Haydn’s Choral Masterpiece is another must-see. This rare symphonic treat promises to be an unforgettable experience.

And don’t forget to check out our regular features on fashion, travel, and more! Visit NJLifestyleMag.com for exclusive content we couldn’t fit into the magazine.

We wish you a wonderful spring and look forward to seeing you out and about — living your best Lifestyle!

PEDICINO,

CURB APPEAL MATTERS

When it comes to homes, first impressions are everything. A well-designed exterior not only enhances a property’s curb appeal but also sets the stage for the entire home’s aesthetic. To uncover the latest trends in home exteriors, New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine spoke with Eric Millstein, a top-producing shore realtor with Soleil Sotheby’s International Realty, who shares his insights on what’s capturing buyers’ attention in today’s market.

Eric Millstein is a Global Real Estate Advisor based in Margate City, NJ. He has quickly become one of the top producers in both the local area and the state of New Jersey. Eric is adept in all aspects of real estate, including renting, selling, buying, new construction, rehab construction, and contract analysis.

Home & Design

First impressions matter. They set the tone for everything that’s to come. Regarding houses, the exterior is the first impression that guests will get. When done well, a home’s exterior lays the foundation of the design story the interior will build on. Furthermore, according to a recent poll conducted by OnePoll on behalf of TruGreen, 75% of home buyers care more about the home’s exterior than anything else. So, not only does a home’s exterior matter to the overall design, but it’s also essential for resale.

What trends are you seeing lately?

In recent years, we’ve seen modern contrasts taking hold, especially with white exteriors paired with black window casings. This trend remains popular due to its sleek, clean look, which offers a contemporary, almost minimalist aesthetic. The sharp contrast draws attention to the home’s architecture, and it works particularly well for homes near the beach where you want a bright, fresh look.

Elegance and Power!

“Bill Driscoll and his team took care of the entire process, and expertly installed our panels.”

—Lisa Johnson, Linwood

In recent years, we’ve seen modern contrasts taking hold, especially with white exteriors paired with black window casings. This trend remains popular due to its sleek, clean look, which offers a contemporary, almost minimalist aesthetic.

Additionally, our area has a growing preference for natural, earthy tones — warm beiges, soft taupes, and muted grays, often complemented by deeper accents like charcoal or deep green. These colors resonate with the coastal environment and provide a more grounded, organic feel. They’re both elegant and adaptable to different architectural styles, from traditional shore cottages to more modern builds.

Is there anything that will risk becoming dated-looking?

One trend that has become popular recently but could risk becoming dated is the use of cool-toned grays. While they were a staple for a while, especially for more modern or industrial looks, they can sometimes feel a bit too sterile

or cold — especially in a beach setting where warmer, sun-soaked tones are more in tune with the environment. I think we’ll see a shift away from those cooler grays toward more earthy neutrals that age better and blend in with natural surroundings.

Do you see any new styles emerging? Looking forward, I’m seeing biophilic design becoming more prominent in the South Jersey area. Homes are increasingly incorporating soft greens, wood tones, and sand-inspired neutrals that reflect the coastal landscape. These colors not only enhance a home’s curb appeal but also align with sustainable and eco-conscious design principles, which I expect to gain more traction in the coming years.

Overall, we’re moving toward a preference for understated elegance in exterior colors — choosing hues that complement, rather than compete with, the natural beauty of the area. Homes are less about standing out with bold colors and more about blending seamlessly with their environment while maintaining a luxurious yet welcoming feel.

TRAVEL TIPS 101

Traveling doesn’t have to drain your wallet! Whether you’re planning a getaway to a picturesque beach or a bustling city abroad, ensure you’ll get the most bang for your travel buck — no matter where you’re headed.

Hoi An, Vietnam riverfront

From choosing budget-friendly destinations to leveraging the power of travel apps, there are countless ways to save on hotels, flights, and everyday essentials while abroad.

Cape Town, South Africa
MSC Meraviglia in Ocean Cay Bahamas

Interestingly enough, the phrase “getting more bang for your buck” was popularized in the early 1950s by President Eisenhower, because nuclear weapons were more efficient than conventional bombs. Today, the phrase typically describes getting a bargain or a steal. When it comes to travel, domestic or international, everyone wants to find a great deal that won’t break your bank (or credit card). If you Google “inexpensive vacations,” the internet returns around 251,000 hits! That’s a lot of advice. Let’s break that all down into four basic categories to help your vacation buck get the most, loudest, and potent bang.

Destinations

Post Office, a British mail and financial travel services company, analyzes travel market data to create a list of budget-friendly destinations. In 2024, Hoi An, Vietnam, topped the list at just $64.51 a day for a picturesque and ancient town with beautiful beaches. Following a close second, Cape Town, South Africa, came in at $68.48 a day for essentials, offering an unforgettable getaway with views of Table Mountain and unspoiled coastlines. Other destinations that won’t send you to the poor house include Mombasa, Kenya, and, believe it or not, Tokyo, Japan at just $74.43 a day for essential tourist purchases. And, what exactly are essentials? According to Post Office researchers, rankings are based on expenses like a glass of wine and a bottle of water.

Currency

One way to get a better bang for your buck is to understand your buck as well as the euro, franc, and other world currencies. Before you travel, know what the US dollar is worth by looking up the rate and using an online converter to see exactly what the dollar converts to in another country.

Local author and NJ Lifestyle Magazine writer, Molly Golubcow, shares stories that are 100% Atlantic City!
The Hotel on St. James Place: Growing up in Atlantic City between the Boardwalk and the Holocaust tells incredible tales about her parents and the hotel they ran in the 1970s.

Also, look at your credit card fine print and see what perks may be available. If you have credit card points, use them to save money on hotels and flights.

Another money-related tip before you travel overseas is to check foreign transaction fees on your credit and/ or debit cards. Some have very low or NO foreign transaction fees. So, take the card(s) that will charge the lowest transaction fee. When you do have to take money out of a foreign ATM, try to find a network associated with your bank to get the best rates. Also, if you pay for purchases with a credit card when traveling, always pay in local currency as opposed to the US dollar (if there is an option) — typically, that gives you a better conversion rate.

Time of Year

As the saying goes, “Timing is everything!” To make sure you find great travel deals, be flexible and know the difference between high and low seasons. For example, going to Europe during the summer months can cost nearly double compared to going during the fall or winter. A room for two in central London at the Trafalgar St. James costs $293 a night in January as opposed to $467 in July. Airfares will also vary. An American airline coach flight from New York to London costs at least $300 more in July as opposed to winter. Yes, it’s colder, but that’s why you have a closet full of coats and hats!

In addition, always be on the lookout for sales, last-minute deals, and special offers that can provide significant savings on flights, accommodations, and even tours. Sign up with various airlines and hotel companies to get on their “On Sale” mailing lists.

Websites & Apps

Thank the Internet for supplying a virtual army of travel agents on your laptop or phone. Websites like Kayak, Travelzoo, and Gate1 Travel are only a small sampling of online travel booking sites.

Wine Wisdom Q & A

Exploring Old Vs. New World, Tannins, Dry Rieslings & More!

Greetings and happy (almost) Spring!! I’ve really enjoyed connecting with so many of you.

Jennifer W. from Williamstown asks, “I’ve heard you mention Old World and New World when it comes to wines — what does it mean?

A: Old World wines come from traditional wine-producing regions in Europe, such as France, Italy, and Spain. These wines often emphasize terroir — the influence of the local environment (soil, climate, etc.) on the wine. New World wines are produced in regions like the United States, Australia, and South America, where winemaking practices are often more innovative and less regulated.

Understanding the distinction will help you appreciate the style and flavor profiles of the wines. Old World wines tend to be more subtle and complex, often showcasing earthiness and minerality, while New World wines are usually fruit-forward and bold, reflecting the region’s climate and winemaking techniques. Try the two wines below, at the same time, and let me know what you think.

Your challenge: Balleto Vineyards Pinot Noir — Vs — Jessiaume Bourgogne Rouge.

Tom M. from Northfield asks, “I have a hard time understanding tannin. Can you help?”

A: Tannins are naturally occurring compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems. They contribute to the structure and mouthfeel of wine, often giving it a dry, puckering sensation.

Wines high in tannins are typically red wines, especially those made from grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, or Syrah. If a wine leaves your mouth feeling dry and your gums slightly astringent, it likely has high tannin levels. You can also check the wine’s color; darker wines often have more tannins.

My pick: De Forville Langhe Nebbiolo

Allison D. from Margate asks, “I recently discovered that I love dry Riesling, but I have a hard time discerning what Rieslings are dry. Any tricks?”

A: Many Rieslings, especially those from regions like Germany, can vary significantly in sweetness. While labels may not always specify, you can look for keywords like “trocken” (dry) or “halbtrocken” (offdry) on German bottles.

For other regions, consider the alcohol content: higher alcohol levels (typically above 12.5%) can indicate dryness, while lower levels may suggest sweetness. Additionally, Riesling from regions like Alsace or the Finger Lakes often leans toward dryness, so familiarizing yourself with producers known for dry styles can help. I never want to lead the witness, but the wine below is fabulous.

My pick: Hillick & Hobbs Riesling

What is a ’Pet Nat’ Wine?

A: “Pet Nat,” short for “Pétillant Naturel,” is a method of natural sparkling wine production. This ancient technique involves bottling the wine before fermentation is complete, allowing the natural carbonation to develop in the bottle. Pet Nat wines are often unfiltered and can display a range of flavors, from fruity to funky, with a characteristic cloudy appearance.

Many wine lovers appreciate Pet Nat for its artisanal quality and the unique, often playful nature of the wines. They pair well with a variety of foods and are perfect for casual gatherings.

Your challenge: Seek out a pet nat wine and report back.

Stewart M. from Linwood asks, “What does the Rooster mean on an Italian wine label?”

The rooster, or “gallo,” is a symbol of Chianti Classico wines, denoting that the wine meets specific quality standards set by the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico. Originating from a historical legend, the rooster symbolizes the region’s commitment to quality and tradition. Seeing the rooster on a label signifies that the wine comes from a designated area within Tuscany and has been produced according to strict regulations, ensuring a certain level of quality and authenticity.

Your challenge: Seek out a Rooster on your next wine selection.

As always, I am grateful for our connection and the opportunity to share some knowledge on a topic that has taught me so much. You keep asking and I’ll keep answering. Until next issue…

REVOLUTIONIZING JOINT REPLACEMENTS WITH ROBOTICS

In the world of orthopedic surgery, few names stand out like Dr. Fabio Orozco. A pioneer in joint replacement and founder of Orozco Orthopaedics, he has spent over three decades transforming lives by restoring mobility and improving quality of life. Discover his groundbreaking work, his passion for education, and the innovations that continue to place him at the forefront of his field.

RUN THE BOARDS RUN THE BOARDS

Presented By:

The sky glowed with vibrant swirls of orange and red as the sun dipped below the horizon on a crisp winter evening. I found a seat in the corner of a cozy local café, awaiting Dr. Fabio Orozco. He arrived moments later, still in his blue scrubs topped with a hooded sweatshirt sporting his distinctive blue-and-orange double “O” logo.

As a health reporter in southern New Jersey, I first met Dr. Orozco nearly 20 years ago. His upbeat demeanor and infectious positivity left a lasting impression — and those qualities remain unchanged today. Despite having completed 11 surgeries that day, starting long before most of us were awake, Dr. Orozco exuded calm and energy. He settled into our conversation with enthusiasm, eager to share insights about his lifelong passion: hip and knee replacements.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Fabio Orozco has dedicated his career to helping people regain mobility and improve their quality of life. As the founder of Orozco Orthopaedics, with locations in Linwood, Manahawkin, and Hammonton, his practice seamlessly combines cutting-edge technology with personalized, boutique care.

“I gravitated toward hip and knee replacements because they truly make a difference in people’s lives,” Dr. Orozco explains. “Years ago, implants weren’t as durable. But today, with advancements in technology and materials, they can last a lifetime.”

The evolution of surgical techniques and materials has revolutionized joint replacement procedures. One groundbreaking advancement is roboticassisted surgery — a tool only 20% of orthopedic surgeons currently employ. One of the first surgeons in the area to adopt this procedure, Dr. Orozco is at the forefront of this innovation, using robotics to deliver unparalleled precision in surgery.

Robotic systems utilize 3D imaging from pre-operative CT scans to create personalized surgical plans. This technology allows surgeons to make smaller incisions, avoid cutting muscles, and ensure precise placement of implants. “The implants are sized in millimeter increments, and with robotics, we can achieve a level of precision that was unimaginable just a few years ago,” he says.

For

more than

30

years, Dr. Fabio Orozco has dedicated his career to helping people regain mobility

and improve their quality of life.

The benefits for patients are profound: shorter recovery times, reduced pain, and same-day discharge. “Patients walk and often navigate stairs the day of their surgery. They usually can go home the same day,” Dr. Orozco shares. Recovery now takes just three to four weeks — dramatically faster than traditional methods.

Dr. Orozco emphasizes the importance of patient involvement in achieving successful outcomes. “We’re like a machine — if we rest, we rust,” he says, encouraging patients to prepare for surgery and stay active during recovery. He also helps patients address pre-existing conditions like diabetes or obesity to optimize surgical results.

Whenever possible, his practice adopts a conservative approach. “We start with treatments like physical therapy and injections,” he explains. “Surgery is only recommended when other methods don’t work.”

Despite performing surgeries for a wide range of patients — from individuals in their 20s to those as old as 92 — Dr. Orozco maintains a boutique, concierge-style atmosphere. “We treat every patient with respect and care, ensuring their comfort at every step,” he says. His practice combines the personalized attention of a private clinic with the accessibility of insurance coverage, ensuring highquality care is available to all. A key part of his success is his fantastic team who have worked alongside him for years. Their collective experience, dedication, and shared commitment to patient care create a supportive environment that fosters trust and exceptional outcomes. “My team is truly the backbone of everything we accomplish,” Dr. Orozco says with gratitude.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Orozco is a dedicated educator. “I teach surgeons from all over the world. I travel to instruct them in their countries, and they come here to learn from us,” he shares. “Teaching keeps you sharp. You’re always learning, exchanging ideas, and discussing cases.”

Dr. Orozco is also a strong advocate for embracing technological advancements in medicine. From robotics to artificial intelligence, he believes innovation is key to improving patient outcomes. “AI is the future, and we have to embrace it,” he says.

For Dr. Orozco, the ultimate reward is seeing patients return to the activities they love. Whether it’s a grandparent chasing after their grandchildren or an athlete returning to their sport, restoring mobility is life changing. “I strive to provide my patients with the highest level of care, both before and after their procedure. My ultimate goal is to help them return to their lives as quickly as possible.”

Balancing a thriving practice, a packed surgical and teaching schedule, and life with his wife and four teenage boys, Dr. Orozco is constantly on the move. What fuels his motivation? “I love what I do,” he says with a warm smile. n

In Hammonton, New Jersey, how can you possibly go wrong with “Blue Rascal Distillery” for the name of your business?  Known as the Blueberry Capital of the World, Hammonton’s farms produce 80 percent of the crop for the entire state. Another local reference that ties the distillery to its colorful name is the Hammonton High School’s football team, the Blue Devils. And, a South Jersey story cannot be complete without mentioning that infamous “rascal” known as the Jersey Devil — a tale originating in the pine barrens that border Hammonton. In addition, the company logo depicts the devil playing beneath a full moon, harkening back a hundred years ago when distilled spirits moved through the area under moonlight.

The cozy and chic craft spirit house produces award-winning products with a local twist.

Curt and Kelly Perone, owners and Hammonton residents embrace their ties to the community and how it syncs up with the distillery.

So, the Blue Rascal is a keeper, but let us not forget another important word in the name — “Distillery.” The cozy and chic craft spirit house produces award-winning products with a local twist. Curt and Kelly Perone, owners and Hammonton residents embrace their ties to the community and how it syncs up with the distillery. Curt, who was born and raised locally, explains, “Hammonton is a farming community, and we use local produce to make our craft spirits, especially blueberries and cranberries. We also make different

infused spirits during the year for use in the tasting room that uses the bounties of the harvest. In the past, that included local tomatoes and sweet corn, blackberries, and cucumbers.

Uniquely Handcrafted Spirits

Another feather in Blue Rascal’s cap is the fact that very few craft distilleries across the country use local berries the way they do to make brandy and liqueurs. Signature offerings include Blueberry Liqueur and Blueberry Brandy as well as their gold medal, award-winning Gin — all using local fresh blueberries in their production. Perone explains,

“We take the freshly harvested fruit and process it right at the distillery. We also ferment, distill, and age our spirits in the distillery,” says Perone.

“We take the freshly harvested fruit and process it right at the distillery. We also ferment, distill, and age our spirits in the distillery. In fact, you won’t find liqueurs like ours anywhere else.”

The staff at Blue Rascal, like alchemists brewing up unique concoctions, craft their spirits and liqueurs with “passion and precision.”  Perone elaborates on the energy brewing in the distillery, “There is something magical about taking hundreds of pounds of fresh fruit or grain and turning it into a beautiful liquor that so many can enjoy. This distillery is a passion project of mine, and now our staff brings that same passion to the business. From identifying new cocktails to experimenting with new infusions to taking those

experiments and turning them into new liquors that we are selling.”

Lead distiller, Ryan Carpenter brings his ten years of liquormaking experience and “magic” to Blue Rascal. With a heavy focus on fermentation, distillation, and maturation, Carpenter “…enjoys the art of crafting high-quality spirits” and was recently named in “Men’s Journal” magazine as a contributor to “one of the world’s best whiskeys.”

All their cocktails use products made in-house only and crafted in interesting ways so that guests can get ideas for making cocktails at home.

A Favorite Cocktail — or Two

Depending on the season’s harvest, Blue Rascal Distillery changes the cocktail menu. For example, you may see their wry old-fashioned, espresso martini flights, or their Blueberry Rascaltini — one of their most popular offerings. Every month Blue Rascal offers five or six unique cocktails that speak to the season. All their cocktails use products made in-house only and crafted in interesting ways so that guests can get ideas for making cocktails at home.

In addition to opportunities to imbibe, the distillery offers special events throughout the year. For example, Paint and Sip nights, Trivia on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month, and Open Mic are regular experiences. In 2025, Blue Rascal hopes to add more events including Board Game Nights and Singles Nights. Perone sums up the atmosphere at the Blue Rascal, “There’s always something going on at the distillery, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.” n

Dickinson, Emily, 1830-1886. Herbarium, circa 1839-1846. 1 volume

“Here is a little forest, Whose leaf is ever green; Here is a brighter garden, Where not a frost has been; In its unfading flowers, I hear the bright bee hum, Prithee, my brother, Into my garden come!”

—Emily Dickinson

An excerpt from Emily Dickinson’s poem “There is Another Sky.” In it, she describes a metaphorical garden, a place of perpetual beauty and warmth, and invites her brother to join her, signifying a desire for connection and comfort in a difficult time. A celebrated American poet from Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson was also a prolific gardener. She studied botany, took courses at Amherst and Mount Holyoke, and tended a large garden with a small conservatory attached to the family home. As a teenager, she created a herbarium that lives at the intersection of science, poetry, and art, filled with over 400 pressed plants that she collected from her garden and on walks. Dickinson’s herbarium is housed at the Houghton Library, Harvard University. It is too fragile to view but has inspired gardeners and artists for decades.

What better way to celebrate spring than to visit The Brandywine Museum of Art’s new exhibition, This Earthen Door, on view from May 25, 2025 to September 08, 2025. Curated as an interdisciplinary exhibition, This Earthen Door celebrates the poetic beauty of Emily Dickinson’s profound affinity with nature. Through a collection of photographs, Brooklyn artist Amanda Marchand and Chapel Hill artist Leah Sobsey illuminate the vibrant hues of plants and delve

into the symbolic significance of flowers in both artistic expression and literature. This ongoing project celebrates the lyrical essence of Dickinson’s natural world connections.

Marchand and Sobsey embarked on a mission to cultivate numerous flowering plants in their respective gardens, faithfully recreating the botanical specimens and original layout of 66 pages from Emily Dickinson’s herbarium. Using a mortar and pestle, they meticulously extracted pigments from these flowers, which became integral to their artistic process.

The artists were inspired by the anthotype photographic process that uses plant-based pigments to create images on photosensitive paper, which was popular during Dickinson’s lifetime. Merchand and Sobsey selected specific pages from Dickinson’s herbarium, coated the paper with pure colors derived from the plants they grew, and exposed it to sunlight. Utilizing the sun’s bleaching

Art effect, this method resulted in ghostly images reminiscent of Dickinson’s preserved botanical collection, evocatively alluding to the passage of time. The anthotype photography remains a fascinating example of early photographic experimentation and a connection to natural history and the birth of the photographic medium.

The artists also created several “data drawings” made up of individual paper sheets colored only by the pigment of a single flower — a visual distillation of that flower. Marchand and Sobsey then created various-sized groupings of these sheets, arranged in grids

and other patterns, to symbolize their shared properties or poetic associations. Each one of these data drawings is named after a line from Dickinson’s poetry. For example, the 11 colors within the work entitled Because I Could not Stop for Death represent the flowers commonly used as funeral flowers in the Victorian period. This Earthen Door unfolds as a rich exploration of the fleeting nature of beauty, celebrating the vibrant palette of nature’s colors and highlighting the intersections of art, poetry, and science. n

Whether you want to cozy up to the elegant bar, savor the tasty, freshly prepared food, or dance the night away in a lively atmosphere, the ByrdCage promises to be an inclusive and safe space for you and your flock to savor.

Since opening in January, the ByrdCage has gained considerable momentum, in part due to its dazzling social media that helped get the word out early on, drawing thousands of followers in just a few short weeks before it opened.

Since opening in January, the ByrdCage has gained considerable momentum, in part due to its dazzling social media that helped get the word out early on, drawing thousands of followers in just a few short weeks before it opened. City officials welcomed the space as a long overdue home for the LGBTQ community, as hundreds turned out for the opening weekend.

The name alone conjures up the fun evoked in the hilarious 1996 movie The Bird Cage. Progressive for its time, anyone could relate to the nightclub — owning gay couple who begrudgingly pull off laugh-out-loud antics as they deliver an important message about the absurdity of having to hide who you are to gain approval. At this ByrdCage, there is no hiding, only fun antics. You are invited to proudly be yourself.

Your palate will thank you for stopping in. Jason Tell, the visionary and creator behind the ByrdCage is well-known locally for his creative culinary skills. Over the years, Tell launched innovative dining concepts for multiple successful ventures in Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Cape May County.

back pocket and business plans created. It was just a matter of activating them once the right location was found.”

The perfect property turned out to be a two-story venue in the University District of the city’s Chelsea neighborhood, which was previously the Good Dog Bar that closed last year. Tell, along with Giulietta Consalvo, a seasoned food and beverage veteran with a background in performing arts, and Richard Helfant, executive

director of Lucy the Elephant, are the creative team behind the ByrdCage.

Spread Your Wings

The space is roomy, yet comfortable and intimate, with a splash of posh. There’s a spacious dance floor upstairs, complete with high-tech sound and lighting, and a DJ on the weekends. Or you may prefer to delight in the sounds of the piano bar or come for the drag brunches, trivia nights, and Sinatra Sundays. There is a robust calendar of themed events.

“We want this place to be a reflection of everything the community represents, and first and foremost, that’s kindness and love,” says Consalvo. “You walk through that door, and you’re going to feel the love and be welcomed as if you are family. It’s a love fest.”

The decor is chic and edgy, accented with ornate birdcages, gold-textured feathered wallpaper, colorful pop art, and rainbows. China bowls that hang on the walls are reminiscent of the very same China featured in the movie’s hysterical dining room scene. (If you know, you know.) Come before sunset, and you may very well catch a rainbow that’s cast by the sunlight piercing through the tinted front windows, and spilling onto the piano bar.

The good vibes extend to the delicious food. You’re eating healthy without knowing it, and that’s the intention. Tell says he wants everyone to have a good feeling in their bellies when they leave. The menu features gluten-free American comfort food and veganfriendly options, all made in-house with fresh, high-quality ingredients — all consciously prepared.

With about 22 items on the dinner menu, including appetizers, soups, salads, and entrees, there’s something for everyone. You might try the Bougie Bae pineapple & balsamic marinated skirt steak or the Shrimply Irresistible —

Homemade Pasta Made Fresh Daily!

BLAKE & ASSOCIATES

a tasty gluten-free take on fried shrimp, but lighter and encrusted in a corn-flake crumb. Another fave is a jumbo lump crab cake or a vegan chickpea version of it if you’re so inclined. If you must have gluten, there’s a smash burger on a brioche bun served with sassy sauce, one of several dipping sauces on the menu.

The cocktail menu features drinks inspired by the movie, such as the Agador Spartacus, a fittingly spicy Jalapeno-infused tequila cocktail.

A Nod To Atlantic City’s Rich History Of Gay Culture

The ByrdCage aims to fill an unmistakable void in Atlantic City. Its opening picks up on the legacy left by philanthropists and partners John Schultz and Gary Hill, who developed gay culture in Atlantic City from the 70s onward. Schultz opened Studio Six, the Brass Rail, and many other establishments in the neighborhood on New York and Kentucky Avenues and “Snake Alley,” the windy road that connects the two streets.

“For me, Studio Six provided a safe space, a place where I could be myself, where I could meet other people like me and sort of spread my feathers if you pardon the birdcage pun,” says Helfant. “It was more than just a bar.”

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Schultz pointed out that places like The ByrdCage are what is needed to bring young people together and that he believes there is an absence of unity in the younger generation that has been lost to social media and dating apps.

“The bar scene was our glue that kept us together as a gay community,” Schultz says. “You went there for the social connection.”

LIFE AFTER DIVORCE

Adjusting to life financially after a divorce

There’s no doubt about it — going through a divorce can be an emotionally trying time. Now, more than ever, you need to make sure that your finances are on the right track. You will then be able to put the past behind you and set in place the building blocks that can be the foundation for your new financial future.

Assess Your Current Financial Situation

Following a divorce, you’ll need to get a handle on your finances and assess your current financial situation, considering the likely loss of your former spouse’s income. In addition, you may now be responsible for paying for expenses that you were once able to share with your former spouse, such as housing, utilities, and car loans. Ultimately, you may come to the realization that you’re no longer able to live the lifestyle you were accustomed to before your divorce.

Establish A Budget

A good place to start is to establish a budget that reflects your current monthly income and expenses. In addition to your regular salary and wages, be sure to include other types of income, such as dividends and interest. If you will be receiving alimony and/or child support, you’ll want to include those payments as well.

As for expenses, you’ll want to focus on dividing them into two categories: fixed and discretionary. Fixed expenses include things like housing, food, and transportation. Discretionary expenses include things like entertainment, vacations, etc. The goal of budgeting is mainly to get an understanding of where your money is being spent so that you can make decisions about what is most important to you.

Reevaluate Your Financial Goals

Your next step should be to reevaluate your financial goals. While you were married, you may have set certain financial goals with your spouse. Now that you are on your own, these goals may have changed. Start out by making a list of the things that you now would like to achieve. Do you need to put more money towards retirement? Are you interested in going back to school? Would you like to save for a new home?

Protect/Establish Credit

Since divorce can have a negative impact on your credit rating, consider taking steps to try to protect your credit record and/or establish credit in your own name. A positive credit history is important since it will allow you to obtain credit when you need it and at a lower interest rate. Good credit is even sometimes viewed by employers as a prerequisite for employment.

Review your credit report and check it for any inaccuracies. Are there joint accounts that have been closed or refinanced? Are there any names on the report that need to be changed? You’re entitled to a free copy of your credit report weekly from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. You can go to annualcreditreport.com for more information.

Change Your Beneficiary Designations

After a divorce, you’ll want to change the beneficiary designations on any life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and bank or credit union accounts you may have in place. Keep in mind that a divorce settlement may require you to keep a former spouse as a beneficiary on a policy, in which case you cannot change the beneficiary designation.

This is also a good time to make a will or update your existing one to reflect your new status. Make sure that your former spouse is not still named as a personal representative, successor trustee, beneficiary, or holder of a power of attorney in any of your estate planning documents.

Don

t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Divorce can be an emotional time that can lead to costly mistakes. Hiring a dedicated professional to help you develop and implement a plan may be the best course of action for many.  Proper planning can allow you to feel more confident as you move into this next phase of your life. n
