Here Comes the Sun
W
e’re off to a great summer! And I’m so happy we’ve had some sunny weekends to help our seasonal communities that rely on the wonderful weather for income. The sunshine is the lifeblood of our tourist communities, so it’s good to have it. This month in New Jersey Lifestyle we take a few trips and enjoy all the amazing amenities we’re blessed with here in South Jersey. We head down to one of my favorite places for a Road Trip to Cape May, with a hop over to Delaware with Lisa and Dennis. Then, it’s off to South Africa with Molly, who recently returned with some great stories and amazing photos. And, since we’re all lovers of cats, we take a look at the Jaguar F-Type. Next, it wouldn’t be summer at the shore if we didn’t take advantage of all the delicious seafood in our area, from Atlantic City to Cape May, with our Eats Feature. But let’s face it, home is where the heart is, and writer Michael Cagno encourages us to enrich our lives and our homes by collecting art. And if you have been watching pro organizer Marie Kondo, you know that downsizing and organizing is all the rage. Guest Lifelines contributor Karina Anthony helps us get our closet in order, so we can move toward efficient style. This issue overflows with creative, inspired, and informative content produced by our talented contributors. I’m so proud of our team and their commitment to quality. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t get a compliment on how wonderful our contributors are and the great work they do. Here at Lifestyle, we’re continually evolving, so you will notice some design changes Darla has made to update our look. We’re starting with the Contributor’s Page to better highlight our talented team. So, keep on living the lifestyle and enjoy this summer issue … and all the good fortune this season brings. Sincerely,
Nick Valinote, Publisher

Family Fun Day
Start off your seaside adventure with statementmaking swimwear for the entire family. By Alyson Boxman Levine
T
Ruffled Red Suit, Agent Provocateur
he lazy days of summer have finally arrived and the ideal climate at the Jersey Shore has both visitors and locals jumping for joy. It certainly appears to be shaping up for a glorious season weather-wise, featuring blue skies, glorious sunshine, and glistening ocean breezes; welcome to the delightful days of Summer 2019. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect swimsuit for that awaited pool party or that special weekend at the shore, one of these featured stylish selections is sure to measure up. Are you looking for that flattering, flawless fit or something truly unique to turn heads? Look no further than these current suits; offering something fashionable for everyone in the family. nnn The Gold Standard For that stand-out-from-the-crowd look along the shoreline this summer, embrace the bold and choose a chic metallic swimsuit. This oh-so-shiny fabric is magnificently on trend for the beach and resort scene, and offers the west coast vibes of your dreams. This one-piece from the Gooseberry label can simply be described as “extra” and is perfect for those looking to unleash their daring side. You'll feel confident and amazing in this bright cheerful shade. Gooseberry is a French label with bold details and just the right amount of sass. Chic styles are the foundation of their designs. Created in 2012, this brand’s fashions are both sweet and daring. Their styles are ready to take you through the day, so you feel comfortable and effortlessly sexy from early morning to late at night. The perfect combination of elegance and edginess, Gooseberry is loved by models like Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber. nnn Designer Ruffles Searching for a sweet, yet sexy look? Try incorporating a swimsuit with ruffles — yes, this trend is still going strong — and combine this shy look with a daringly-deep neckline and voila, you have a masterpiece. The Prima Donna Bettina suit from the soughtafter Agent Provocateur label blends vintage-inspired elegance with plenty of alluring drama. This red one-piece swimsuit features a plunge neckline trimmed with flirtatious ruffles from the shoulders to the waist. Coordinating cutaway panels sweep around your form to meet slim straps at the back. A high-cut legline flatters your figure, and the Brazilian-style rear creates as much impact at the back as the front. The son of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, Joe Corre and his wife Serena Rees founded Agent Provocateur to create a new line of lingerie. Trying to move away from the shady connotations and British prudery, the duo aimed to create highquality lingerie that enchanted and aroused both the wearer and the partner. With their niche in the market defined, they opened their first boutique in Soho, London in 1994. The brand soon expanded its offering to swimwear and has become a global brand with over 47 shops and concessions in 18 countries. Known for its confident and beautiful designs, Agent Provocateur is celebrated for its excellent artisanship, beautiful fabrics, and ground-breaking design that is always “provocative”. nnn One-Shoulder Style Match your little ones (or make a statement on your own) in this colorful one-shoulder suit from the new Summersalt label. 6 Ways to Keep your Business Insurance Premiums Low By Scott Brown 1. MINIMIZE RISKS Insurance carriers want to insure responsible customers. A safety training program or risk management review will help reduce the possibility that you’ll ever need to make a claim, thus ensuring that your premiums should avoid uncontrollable rate hikes. Preventable losses are avoidable losses. As Benjamin Franklin was fond of saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and curiously enough, he was talking about fire prevention. 2. CATEGORIZE EMPLOYEES PROPERLY There are many industries with high instances of worker injury, and if you or your employees are inadvertently placed in these categories, you may find yourself paying unnecessarily high premiums. When employees enter or leave your employ, let your insurance company know as promptly as possible, as that too will affect your premium costs. The best practice is to confer with your agent or broker when you have a question about appropriate coverage. 3. IMPROVE SECURITY PRECAUTIONS Security systems, fire sprinkler systems, worker safety programs, and driver training programs are a few measures that can reduce insurance costs. If you deal with sensitive customer data, it’s also important to maintain robust security protocols to reduce your exposure to cybercrime. Insurance carriers evaluate risk and your agent or broker should be able to help you identify problem areas, so that you can institute a program that works for your business. 4. EVALUATE POLICIES ANNUALLY It can be tempting to see a policy renewal, mechanically make the payment, and let it roll. As an entrepreneur, you have a lot on your agenda, and reviewing an insurance statement may not be a high priority. As tempting as it may be to leap onto the next new task, it’s in your best

interest to sit down and methodically review it. In fact, give your agent a call and ask questions about changes in your business, adjustments to your business model, or even rate changes if you see them. This is another opportunity to make sure you are protecting your business to the best of your ability and reduce what you pay to protect it. 5. MODIFY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE It’s simple math: increase your deductible, lower your premium. The algebra comes in when you determine what your company can reasonably afford in the event it becomes necessary to make a claim. Larger firms may comfortably manage deductibles in the many thousands while smaller enterprises may operate on a tighter margin and desire more limited outlays. There is no hard rule. Each company will have to independently evaluate its needs and come to a conclusion on how large a deductible it can afford. See Also: Offering Health Insurance? Questions Small Businesses Should Ask 6. BUY SUFFICIENT COVERAGE Just like Goldilocks looked for a chair that was just right for her, you must look for coverage that fits your company properly. Get too much coverage, and you’re paying for something you’ll never use, but too little coverage could leave you with gaps in coverage that leave you needlessly exposed. A determined broker or agent will be there to provide detailed explanations and safeguard against too little or too much coverage. While price is an important factor when purchasing insurance for your business, it may be penny wise and pound foolish to inordinately focus on cost. There are other important factors that can affect your experience, such as the claims process or the rating of the insurance carrier that provides your policy. Take your time and do business with someone you trust who has great references. It is always a good business practice to do your research and invest wisely when it comes to spending your money, and buying insurance is no different from any other investment. n

Generations of Caring By Felicia L. Niven
WHEN JANICE CAMBRON FIRST WALKED INTO Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC) to interview for a position back in 1984, she noticed two things — how clean the building was and how nice the staff was. Some things never change. “To this day, we still get those same two compliments,” she said proudly. Of course, now she’s the one overseeing that nice staff and (a new) clean building as Executive Director. It’s a job she loves — and one she describes as more of “a calling” than a career. She’s not alone. Speak to any of the administration or staff at SGLC, and you’ll find a similar story. There’s an atmosphere of family, a sense of camaraderie and pride that underscores even the simplest interaction. It’s clear that these are people who do what they love, and love what they do. During a time when the average employee changes jobs 10 to 15 times during his or her career, SGLC has a record of longstanding employees that is unprecedented — an average of 9.8 years versus the industry average of just 4.3. Missy Rundio, Director of Activities and Recreation, has worked at SGLC for more than two decades. As a Stockton student, she completed her internship in Public Health Administration at SGLC. She knew within two weeks that she wanted to work here full-time. She credits Martin H. Klein, CEO, and Janice Cambron for their leadership. “Mr. Klein and the administration have created a special place here,” said Missy. “It’s not just somewhere to go and spend your last years. This is living. We try to make every day a happy one for our residents and I’m proud to be a part of it.” This is an enduring legacy for SGLC, which was founded in 1916 by a group of local Jewish businessmen. Long before Social Security and Medicare, SGLC (as the Hebrew Sheltering Home of Atlantic City) was providing kosher meals and accommodations for those in need. In 1923, the Home changed its charter, and mission, to enrich elder lives. Fast forward several decades and SGLC continues to serve. In 2002, SGLC moved to its current location in Galloway Twp., a 20acre complex that includes a skilled nursing facility, an Alzheimer’s neighborhood and Assisted Living apartments. In 2012, Seashore Housing opened on the property for those aged 55+ and for those with 16

Missy Rundio (left) and Janice Cambron mental and special needs. With its hotel-like atmosphere, the Simon & Sylvia Zisman Seashore Gardens Living Center has attracted the attention of industry professionals. Nursing home administrators have visited from as far away as Japan to study the design and try to duplicate the SGLC model. It may be possible to emulate the architecture and design, but replicating the “generations of caring” is another matter entirely. “We’re fortunate to be an independent, nonprofit home with two volunteer boards that oversee operations,” said Martin H. Klein, CEO. “We have a dedicated, caring staff that we hold to a high standard, and they consistently go above and beyond.” Alysia Price, Administrator and Director of Social Services, has grown her career at SGLC. “I started as a social worker,” she said, “and then I continued to earn more credentials. Seashore Gardens encourages employees to further their education if there’s an opportunity.” Like the other longstanding employees, she has seen generations of residents and families come and go. The constant throughout it all is the fulfilling feeling she gets from her role here. “It’s a difficult thing to do, to make the transition from home to a home-away-from-home. I feel so good when families tell me that they’re glad they brought their loved one to Seashore Gardens Living Center. Modern Technology Reduces Dental Anxiety and Improves Results. By Robin Stoloff

o you dread the drill? Fear the needle? Whether you just dislike going to the dentist or have true dental anxiety, today’s dental technology has made a visit to the dentist a much easier and more positive experience. Solea is the first carbon dioxide dental laser approved by the FDA that replaces the dental drill in the majority of dental procedures. There is no loud noise and no vibration, and here’s the best part — dental procedures with Solea are virtually pain free and require no numbing. This means you can get your procedure done and resume your day without talking as if, well, you just had your mouth numbed. Because you don’t have to wait for an injection to take effect, procedures are quicker and more efficient. Goodman and Rosenberg Dentistry in Pleasantville is one of only a handful of dental practices in New Jersey to offer Solea. “We love technology in our office, and this is our latest technological advance,” says Dr. Jay Rosenberg. “It is the wavelength of the laser that actually makes it possible to do fillings, restorations, gum treatment, and even complex surgeries more easily and efficiently.” In fact, the Solea laser is basically just a beam of light that never touches the mouth, gums, or teeth. “Our patients are thrilled about this new technology,”

says Rosenberg. “They are getting great results, and it has made such a difference for people who have a fear of going to the dentist.” Same Day Crowns and Restorations Another advancement in dentistry is single visit crowns and restorations. Most dental treatments that restore the smile require multiple visits. This isn’t just inconvenient, but it takes up a good amount of time. One of the most remarkable innovations in the world of dentistry is CEREC, a technology that allows patients to get crowns and restorations custom-made and perfectly fitted in the dentist’s office in just two hours. Previous to this new technology, getting a crown or restoration was time-consuming and inconvenient. During the first visit, patients typically received an anesthesia injection. A rubber impression was taken of their teeth and the dentist applied a temporary restoration to the tooth. Then, the patient would go home and wait for the crown to be created at a lab, which could take up to two weeks. During the second visit, the patient would need another anesthesia injection, the dentist would remove their temporary restoration and finally apply the permanent crown. Who has time for all that? CEREC makes the entire process simple, easy, and convenient. Dr. Paul Goodman explains. “First we ask our patients how they want their smile to look. They have input on the size and shape of their crown. After we create a digital impression of their teeth, patients wait as the CEREC machine mills and creates their new restoration right in the office. We custom match the crown and permanently bond it into position.” Because the materials involved in CEREC match the natural tooth composition and structure, they look more natural. It also allows your dentist to conserve more of your healthy tooth than was previously available. This adds extra strength to the structure for a longer, more durable life. “Patients leave the office with their beautiful new smile in about two hours,” says Goodman. “They are amazed by it and they love the results.”
Dental Implants Dentures and bridges can fill in missing teeth, but a more permanent option is a dental implant, which can replace a missing tooth, several teeth, or help stabilize dentures. Dental implant surgery is a procedure that replaces the root of a tooth with a titanium post. After a healing process, a speciallymade tooth is attached to the post providing a permanent, natural-looking tooth, which is more stable than dentures or bridges. “After we take a three-dimension x-ray, we analyze the bone, insert the implant, and allow it to heal for about ten weeks,” Dr. Goodman explains. “For the final step, we position a custom-designed tooth on the implant. With digitally-guided placement, we are able to create beautiful, natural results with dental implants. They look and function just like other teeth. At the end of the process, patients are so excited. Now they can enjoy eating, smiling, and living. It really gives them more confidence.” Teeth Whitening Everyone wants dazzling white teeth, but there are many factors that can cause our smile to be less bright. Coffee, wine, and smoking are just a few of the causes of stained or dull teeth. However, some people are just born with teeth that are not as white as they would like. That is where teeth whitening can help. “We custom-make an upper and lower mouth tray for the patient,” says Dr. Rosenberg. “They take home a whitening solution that they add to the trays and wear the trays with the solution for a couple hours each day for a couple weeks. After they have achieved the whitening results they desire, they can use the solution and trays on a maintenance basis.” With no down time, teeth whitening is one of the easiest, most affordable and dramatic ways to improve your smile. Modern dentistry is constantly improving and advancing. What was once thought to be impossible is now practiced routinely. If your smile needs a makeover, talk to your dentist about the new procedures, techniques, and possibilities to help you get the smile you have always wanted. n njlifestyleonline.com

ith its complex and colorful history, geography, and spirit, South Africa topics could fill every category on "Jeopardy" for a week straight. Can’t you just hear Alex Trebek asking, “What country in Africa has three capital cities?” A genius or two may know the answers, but nothing compares to actually visiting South Africa — tasting, smelling, touching, and experiencing it. In fact, basing your stay in Cape Town, lovingly called the Mother City of South Africa, puts you in a perfect spot to be in or near top sites and scenery. Located at the most southernly point of the country (and continent), Cape Town is nestled between stunning mountains and ocean. There is so much to see and learn. From animal safaris to seaside to wineries to cultural diversity, shopping, sun bathing, museums, and much more. Here’s a list of must dos when visiting Cape Town. Picture Perfect Cape Town Cape Town’s crowning glory, Table Mountain, provides a photo op from any direction. Take the 5-minute cable car up and walk the trails to get the most spectacular vista imaginable. In addition to the stunning 365-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city itself, look for dassies — cute and harmless little rock rabbits that love to be photographed. melting pot, including traditional African, Indian, European, and Asian. Whether a hole in the wall or a high-end restaurant, the common denominator is very fresh, locally-produced ingredients from the juiciest guavas to the crispiest cucumbers. For one stop shopping (food and souvenirs), check out the happening Victoria & Albert Waterfront, boasting 300 acres of food, shops, and restaurants located on Cape Town wharf. Sample local dishes like Bobotie, a spicy minced meat baked dish with an eggbased topping — South Africa’s answer to Moussaka. If your sweet tooth acts up, do not leave the continent until you sample Koeksister — a traditional Afrikaner confection similar to a donut generously infused with syrup or honey. Looking to wet your whistle? Amarula, the traditional adult beverage in South Africa, is a creamy drink (akin to Baileys) made from the fruits of the iconic African marula tree. According to legend, even the elephants get a bit tipsy from eating too many of the ripened fruits! Still thirsty? Make a point of visiting the Stellenbosch winemaking region on the Western Cape. Take Route 62 to visit worldfamous wineries offering tastings, tours, and gourmet meals while
surrounded by breathtaking views of rural South Africa. And here’s a Cape Town funfact: Route 62 is considered the longest wine route in the world — over 500 miles long! Cultural Melting Pot South Africa, like other countries, has history to contend with — European colonization, wars, and apartheid. Monuments and museums throughout Cape Town honor and recognize heroes through the various struggles. To understand the fall of apartheid in South Africa, take one of the Township tours that include the Apartheid Museum. Although apartheid injustices are gone, poverty is still a major problem in South Africa. These tours not only give visitors a sense of history, but also give back money to the transitioning community. Religious diversity is also very present in Cape Town, from numerous Christian churches to Hindu temples. In addition, areas like the Bo-Kapp neighborhood, the Malay or Muslim Quarter, offer walking tours to view the bright and boldly painted houses and sample local cuisine. Not far off, the Cape Town Jewish Museum offers insight about the migration of Jews to South Africa, including tours of the Great Synagogue — a grand structure very appropriately named. The Big Five Lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and Cape buffalos — these magnificent creatures are almost a guaranteed sight when visiting areas like Kruger National Park. Although there are smaller parks, Kruger is the largest and oldest in South Africa. And, when it comes to seeing animals, size matters! Words cannot describe the magnificence of being inches away from a mother elephant escorting her baby across the road, a male lion proudly displaying his mane, or a pack of hyaenas planning their next attack. Whether on a night safari hoping to spot a leopard lounging in a tree or rhinos cooling off in a water pool during the heat of day, the epitome of African wildlife — fur, feather, and foul — surround you for an unforgettable journey. n

Amazing Asbury Park Exploring the rebirth of an iconic seaside city
D
By Dennis Hayes & Lisa Johnson
id you ever have a favorite place you knew like the back of your hand; perhaps it was your backyard when you were a kid? Well, my backyard was Asbury Park. Back in its heyday, Asbury Park was the mecca of shopping and dining. I remember well my mom taking my sisters and I there to shop at Steinbach’s, Woolworth’s, and Buster Brown’s; a place where the shoe salesman would give you a lollipop, sit you down, and measure your feet with a metal Brannock tool. This was back in the mid- to late 1960s when Asbury Park still reigned

supreme as a seashore attraction. The city also boasted some of the best amusement rides in the state. The Palace Amusements, located at the corner of Asbury Avenue and Kingsley, was one of the highlights of the city. Built in 1888, it housed its famous carousel, with hand-carved wooden horses, giraffes, camels, goats and deer; a Ferris Wheel that operated from 1895 to 1988; bumper cars; and the Crystal Maze hall of mirrors. You can’t talk about the Palace without mentioning Tillie; the iconic grinning mural painted on a sidewall that became a nostalgic symbol for the colorful history of the city. Regretfully, the Palace was demolished in 2004. In the mid-1970s, the city became better known for its burgeoning music and bar scene. Although the Stone Pony and the Wonder Bar are still there and thriving, many of the bars that my friends and I frequented are long gone. There was Park Place, The Fast Lane, Mrs. Jay’s, and The Golddigger.

These were all located along the Circuit, a loop created by going north on Ocean Avenue past Convention Hall, taking a left at the Wonder Bar, south on Kingsley, east on Asbury Avenue and back onto Ocean, to do the whole ride over again. The Circuit was a rite of passage for teenagers with four wheels. My friends and I were there most weekends, cruising the Circuit, checking out other cars, and looking for new friends (girls). Convention Hall was built along the boardwalk in 1930 and housed a 3,200-seat convention center, a Grand Arcade, and the Paramount Theatre. The Hall and Theatre hosted many events, but the best were during the 1960s and 70s when both put on killer rock concerts. I saw many concerts there! As the 1980s arrived, the visitors didn’t, and the Hall lost much of its luster. Now, as with the rest of the city, it’s making a comeback, housing new trendy restaurants, bars, and boutiques. After a downward spiral that lasted over four decades, Asbury Park is finally going through a successful rebirth. Money magazine ranked Asbury Park as the second-best beach destination in the U.S., last year, saying: “Asbury Park offers the classic combo of beach and boardwalk.” Lisa and I were in town just for the day and as we began our walking tour to see the new and old. I knew where I wanted to start; Porta! Porta’s handmade, brick oven pizzas are some of the best in New Jersey. It’s one of the many new restaurants that has helped turn things around for Asbury Park. Arriving for lunch, we decided on the Arugula Pizza, which came out with a perfect mix of sauce and cheese and a handful of arugula sprinkled on top. A round of Rose’ and we were ready to resume our road trip. Porta is located at Kingsley and 2nd Avenue — just a block away from the iconic Stone Pony. For those of you who don’t know, the Stone Pony is arguably one of the greatest rock venues in the U.S. The “Pony” has been the anchor of the Asbury Park music scene since it opened in 1974. Exceptionally noted for having been where Bruce Springsteen got his start, the club is still rocking today. We stopped by the Pony to see my old friend Kyle Brendle, the head of promotions. Kyle, a friend from high school and Stockton State College, is a crazy, energetic, give-you-the-shirt-off-his-back kind of guy. If you go to the Pony, he’s the one on stage introducing all the acts and making it happen behind the scenes. We found him busy putting together the final touches for the season opener. Kyle is always working, which is why the shows at the Pony are always so good. After letting my friend get back to work, Lisa and I made our way down the boardwalk to check out what was going on inside Convention Hall (something always is). As luck had it, the Asbury Park Bazaar was taking place. The bazaar is a seasonal market where handcraft & vintage vendors, flowers and gifts, live music, workshops, kids art classes, yoga, and more converge in the Grand Arcade in the main part of Convention Hall. Lisa picked up some local honey before we made our way over to Anchor’s Bend — a vibrant restaurant & bar serving American plates amid nautical decor. Frank, the manager, led us to a great table on the patio where we could both people watch and relax. We each ordered a glass of Rosé (Lisa loves to say “Rosé all day!”) and some Anchor Fries, which are shoe-string style served with truffle mayo; fantastic
and just light enough not to ruin our appetite for dinner. This was Lisa’s first time seeing Asbury Park on foot and she has always wanted to visit the noteworthy venues in the city. So, next we walked over to the Wonder Bar, which now houses the Tillie mural that was salvaged before they tore down the Palace. The Wonder Bar is a true classic in Asbury Park, known for great music, tasty food, and its outdoor Yappy Hour — where dogs run the show. Like the Pony, the Wonder Bar is a great venue where you can enjoy live acts and a fun bar scene. Dinner time was soon upon us and we were excited about our reservations at Moonstruck, an upscale eatery which sits opposite Wesley Lake on Lake Avenue. The beautiful and busy restaurant is located in a converted three-story Victorian structure with an intimate atmosphere and tasteful decor. Our friendly and knowledgeable server, Ed Lewis, highly recommended the two specials of the night; the Lemon Caper Branzino served with brown rice and mixed vegetables, and a Mediterranean Seafood Stew that included Icelandic wild-caught Cod, shrimp, mussels, and calamari in a fennel tomato lobster broth with new potatoes and Kalamata olives. We chose the specials, but first started with the Lamb Quesadilla appetizer, which was sensational. When Chef/Owner, Howard Raczkiewicz, came to see if we were enjoying our visit, he told us he marinates the lamb for an entire day before grilling, which explains the exceptional taste. Howard also shared how he and partner, Luke Magliaro, first opened Moonstruck in Ocean Grove in 1995, but quickly outgrew their location and moved to Asbury Park in 2002, believing a renaissance was around the corner. He was correct. Ed was also right, both dishes were expertly prepared, and the entire meal was fantastic! We finished the night in Moonstruck’s bar area by sharing another round of Rosé and enjoying the sweet sounds coming from the grand piano. Asbury Park sure has taken some twists and turns since I was a little boy hiding from my mom in clothing racks at Steinbach’s. I’m glad to experience its rebirth and tell the tale of its comeback story. Best wishes to my old backyard. n There’s a lot to see and do in beautiful New Jersey. So, until next time; keep on tripping and send us your suggestions at info@njlifestyleonline.com.

By Elaine Rose THERE IS SIMPLY NO PRACTICAL or logical reason to get a Jaguar F-Type. For starters, it’s a two-seater sportster, which rules it out as a family car or even riding to dinner and the theater with a couple of friends. Then there’s the trunk. It has a measly 14.4 cubic-foot capacity — and even less in the convertible. So, you can forget about taking it for a weekend of camping or on a long summer road trip. The only purpose of the F-Type is to provide pure, hedonistic pleasure. And it does that well. If you’re child-free or your offspring have grown and flown the nest; if you crave power, performance, and smooth handling; if you want to grab the attention of every other person on the road, the Jaguar F-Type could be your dream car.
“From its long hood to its wide rear haunches, the F-type is one slinky stunner,” Eric Stafford wrote for Car and Driver. “Sheer horsepower aside, the Jaguar sports car possesses one of the most distinctive and appealing exterior designs in recent memory and a crackling exhaust note that ensures heads will turn to notice both the car and its driver.” “With its sharp steering and confidence-inspiring handling, every outing has the potential to be exciting,” Sarah Shelton wrote for US News & World Report. “From its stunning looks to its growling exhaust, the 2019 Jaguar F-Type has all sorts of ways to get your heart racing. It's frequently deemed one of the best sports cars to drive.” Shelton called the cabin “elegant and well-appointed.” Leather seats are standard and upgraded leather and stitching are optional.

Updated infotainment system with 10-inch touchscreen

2019 F-Type in Fuji White
You get the idea. This is one exhilarating piece of machinery. The infotainment system was updated for 2019, with a 10-inch touchscreen that is more user-friendly than earlier models. But Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability will cost you extra. The F-Type comes with 12-way adjustable seats, a Meridian sound system, just to name a couple of features. The F-Type is manufactured at the Jaguar Land Rover Castle Bromwich Assembly plant in Birmingham, England. If you want one of these babies, there are so many choices, it leads to at least a dozen configurations. They range from the base F-Type, with a 296-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbo charged four-cylinder engine starting at $61,600 to the souped-up F-Type SVR with a 575-horsepower V8 engine with a base price of $123,600. There are plenty of options in between. The base model gets a respectable 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Fuel economy decreases with the upgraded engines. The 2019 model year is almost completely sold out, and the 2020s are coming in, said Brad Luchtman, sales manager for Jaguar Land Rover Cherry Hill. And despite its impracticality, the F-Type is the dealership’s second-best-selling Jaguar. There are five trim lines, and each can be purchased as a coupe or a convertible. Six engines — four, six, and eight cylinders — are available, depending on the trim you choose. All have eight-speed automatic transmission. • F-Type is the base model, which comes with rear-wheel drive. • The F-Type Checkered Flag, new for 2020, starts at $71,900. It has the same engine as the base model, but with racing style décor, including red brake calipers and red seat belts. • The F-Type R-Dynamic comes with the 3.0-liter V6 380-pony engine and an MSRP starting at $84,300. • The F-Type R, starting at $101,800, has a 5.0 liter, 550-horsepower eight-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive, plus a few extra luxurious appointments. It can go from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds. • The F-Type SVR will set you back $123,600 and has the equivalent of 575 horses pulling this chariot. It boasts a heated steering wheel, aluminum shift paddles, and a carbon fiber rear wings for better aerodynamics. “The SVR edition is insane, how fast it is,” Luchtmar said. Jaguar claims the SVR will reach 200 mph, but you’d have to take it to the Indianapolis Speedway to verify that for yourself if you want to keep it legal. It goes from a standstill to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Of course, no car is perfect, and there are a couple of drawbacks. Aside from the tiny trunk, reviewers said the front seat is a tight fit and might be uncomfortable for larger folks. There is plenty of legroom, but the seats are on the snug side and there’s not much headroom. Plus, the seats are low to the ground, which could make entering and exiting the F-Type cumbersome for some people. The F-Type has not been crash-tested for safety. But it does have a lot of standard gizmos to help you avoid a wreck, and even more options are available. While it can accommodate a forward-facing child seat, reviewers said this car is not suitable for small children. Reviewers each have an opinion about which F-Type engine and trim line they prefer. So, it’s up to you — and your pocketbook — to decide. Jaguar Land Rover Cherry Hill has a few F-Types on the lot for sale, but you can order one custom made, Luchtman said. The latter option takes about three months to build and deliver. Whatever you choose, Andrew Ganz of The Car Connection summed it up. “Regardless of version, the F-Type is ready to thrill its driver.” n

hat do Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Barbra Streisand have in common? Their love for art has led them to creating impressive collections. You don’t have to be rich to collect art, or do you? Oprah played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture on the Washington DC Mall. While collecting mostly American and African American work, she made news when in 2016 she sold a Gustav Klimt’s portrait painting for $150 million dollars, profiting $62 million. As a frequent visitor to the auctions, Leonardo is known for his fascination of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Frank Stella’s work. In 2017, a Jean-Michel 34

Basquiat painting of a skull sold at auction for more than $110 million, the most for an American artist at the time. Singer and actress Barbra Streisand is a major collector of 18th- and 19th-century furniture and design and folk art. The global art market in 2017 was valued at $64 billion dollars. Impressive, but here in southern New Jersey there is limited access to art galleries, museums, and bluechip collectors. However, there are many talented artists which are ripe for you to start or enhance your collection. Collecting art can be intimidating. However, starting a collection is an opportunity to be surrounded with pieces that bring you joy and peace. There are several reasons people collect art. Investment, décor, and passion for the
arts are a few reasons. Personally, I collect for the passion because it makes me think and feel differently how I see the world. Hanging art on your wall does not need to be a scary and costly experience. Collecting art can be experiential because you engage with the artist to learn about the creative process, and then share the story behind the work with your family and friends. Here are some simple recommendations to start the journey. There is so much work out there, so you should first define your scope. Do you like abstract, realism, or impressionistic? Does photography, sculpture, or paintings capture your interest? When considering themes, do you lean towards landscape, figure, or historical works?
Your collection should be a reflection of your taste. As you collect, your taste may change and that is OK! Before you even take your wallet out, you need to look, look, and look. This can be done by attending art openings, studio tours, and exhibitions. Using social media platforms like Instagram, to see who is creating what work. Artists use it to reach new audiences. Figure out your reason for collecting. If it is for an investment, understand that it is a long-term proposition which, like many investments, may or may not pay off. But either way, have a budget established. As you look, keep in mind the conservation needs that a piece may require over time. Once you defined your palette, I encourage you to support local artists. It is a great way to begin your collection while also supporting the local community. Often, I hear that we live in a cultural desert and that there are no artists. This is simply not true. Just in Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland Counties, there are many
talented artists creating work using many different materials and are very affordable. It is true there are fewer galleries, but that maybe due to the industry shifting. The internet has become the disruptor to the gallery business model. A report by Hiscox Ltd. stated arts sales online increased 12% in 2017 with the trend continuing upwards. With less galleries, artists are also having to do more on the business side to market their work and connect with audiences. So, whether you are buying work in a gallery, directly from the artist, or online, your reason for collecting remains the same. Before you purchase a piece, be sure to know the provenance. Provenance shows who and when the piece was created and prior ownership. Often, galleries will have supporting documents. When buying directly from the artist, he/she can create those forms for you. Unlike Oprah, you don’t have to be wealthy to buy great art. Collecting from emerging artists is not only more affordable,
but also can be a lot of fun. Who knows, you may discover the next Basquiat. Procuring limited-edition prints, photography, and watercolors is an affordable way to enter the market. Just look at Herb and Dorothy Vogel, two collectors from a working-class background started with emerging artists and created one of the most important post1960s art collections in the United States. Furthering your education will enhance your understanding and exploration of the visual arts. The local community college or university provides courses such as art appreciation to give an opportunity to learn how to describe, analyze, provide meaning, and judge a work of art. You will be exposed to cultural connections across historical periods. This is important because artists often look to the past to create for the future. As your collection grows and becomes more sophisticated, you will develop a critical eye that will guide collection’s aesthetic, historical, and cultural value. But at the end of the day, collect what you like! n

Bringing the Arts Alive By Felicia L. Niven IF THE REFRAIN OF A LONG-FORGOTTEN SONG has ever brought back a tidal wave of memories, you have felt the power of the arts. The deep connection that we have for music — or painting, theater, dance, sculpture, etc. — is a testament to the fact that the arts are seamlessly integrated into the soundtrack and the portrait of our lives. The Schultz-Hill Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), is making sure that we all have access to this beautiful part of humanity through generous grants that fund performances and exhibits throughout southern New Jersey. It’s a mission that has been close to the hearts of founders Gary Hill and John Schultz since they first created the Foundation 17 years ago. Since then, the Schultz-Hill Foundation has organized one benefit performance annually, the proceeds of which support the remainder of their year-long arts outreach programs for students, seniors, and the community. Past benefit performers have included the 5th Dimension, Marc Antonelli, Lucie Arnaz, Eddie Bruce, Julie Budd, Clint Holmes, Chris Macchio, Deana Martin, and Michael Feinstein. Bringing the arts alive and enriching the lives of South Jersey residents is no small task, and Schultz-Hill Foundation co-founders Gary Hill and John Schultz do it with passion, skill, and plenty of toetapping fun.
Arts Programs for Students, Seniors & the Community This past spring, more than 250 area children gained their first exposure to classical music. The event took place at Stockton University’s Dante Hall Theater. Students from Atlantic City’s Our Lady Star Of The Sea School and the Principle Academy Charter School were in attendance as the Schultz-Hill Foundation treated them to a narrated performance of Sergei Prokofief’s “Peter And the Wolf” performed by the Bay Atlantic Symphony. Afterward, the students had a chance to ask questions of the orchestra’s Music Director, Jed Gaylin. In May, the Schultz-Hill Foundation kicked off its 2019 Music & Memories Series Senior Outreach program with “The Soulful Sounds of Sinatra,” a concert at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC). There is also a performance planned this summer at the Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center, and another at SGLC in the fall. In addition, the Schultz-Hill Foundation has worked with the Chicken Bone Beach Youth Institute of Jazz Studies to fund a coloring book of New Jersey jazz artists illustrated by Atlantic City High School students. Each year, the Schultz-Hill Foundation funds local arts organizations and inspires students and educators with its DINA Awards scholarships and grants. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $150,000 in student scholarships and art/historical grants. Presenting “We’ve Got Tonight,” An Evening with Sheena Easton at the Superstar Theater, Resorts Casino Hotel on Friday, August 23rd, 2019 at 8:30 pm This year, for its benefit concert, the Schultz-Hill Foundation welcomes international singing star and Billboard chart topper Sheena Easton. 36

Sheena’s career has spanned four decades, and she has sold over 20 million records worldwide, received two Grammys, and was the first — and still only — artist to have top five records on five major Billboard charts. Sheena also has a list of notable acting credits including a fiveepisode appearance on Miami Vice, a co-starring role opposite Stacy Keach in a John Carpenter-directed trilogy for Showtime titled “Body Bags,” and as a guest star in the cult syndicated series “The Highlander” and a starring role in UPN’s “Ghost Stories.” Other guest roles have included “Brisco County” and “Tech Wars,” as well as a starring role in Showtime’s “Outer Limits.” On Broadway Sheena starred as (Aldonza/Dulcinea) in “Man of La Mancha” opposite the late Raul Julia’s “Don Quixote.” Throughout its year run, the play remained one of the top five grossing hits at the box office. She also starred on Broadway in the hit musical “Grease” as Rizzo. Sheena just finished a run in London’s West End, starring in the classic musical, “42nd Street.” She has been busy with frequent appearances in Las Vegas where she has been a major attraction for the last two decades, and she was recently inducted into the Las Vegas Hall of Fame. Resorts Casino Hotel is a presenting sponsor of the event. Limited $175-per-person VIP tickets include preferred seating and a taxdeductible post-show “meet and greet” champagne/dessert party with Sheena, and may be purchased online at www.schultz-hill.org. General admission seating tickets are $30; preferred seating tickets are $55. Both are available through Ticketmaster or at the Resorts box office. n

circles, having served two terms as president of the powerful Screen Actors Guild. Nationally, he endorsed Barack Obama during his presidential runs, co-moderated a presidential debate in 2016, and spent five years helping to produce and narrate the feature length documentary “Behind the
Fear,” which claims the government hides controversies about HIV/AIDS that it doesn’t want the public to know about. But here’s perhaps the best news today about Asner, mostly known to the masses for playing television news director Lou Grant on the sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”
and, after that show ended, reprising the character, only this time in a leading role on the newspaper drama series “Lou Grant.” Ed Asner’s prostate gland is in good shape. “My prostate is just fine, thanks. It’s perfect, it’s sacrosanct,” the character actor barked over the phone with Lou Grant-like delivery during a chat about the one-man play he performed recently for an audience at the Grunin Center at Ocean County College in Toms River. Asner and his curmudgeonly character became the first in TV history to win best actor Emmys — that’s plural, as in more than one — for the same role on two different shows, one a comedy, the other a drama. Five of Asner’s seven Emmys came for playing Lou Grant — three times during the “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” comedy years, twice after the 30-minute chucklefest morphed into an hour-long drama, set at a newspaper and titled simply “Lou Grant.” To this day, Asner — whose acting career began on Broadway before he landed his first TV gig in the 1950s — is the only actor in television history to win Emmy Awards for the same character on two different shows. Despite perennially high ratings during its run, Asner’s association with and support of Democrats has long been rumored to be the reason CBS canceled “Lou Grant” in 1982. The show was so popular that it was still in television’s top 10 shows when it was abruptly canceled during its fifth season. Asner has consistently believed his
political views, and the publicity they generated for the network, were the reasons CBS axed the program. But that was close to 40 years ago. Old news. These days, Asner is more concerned about his prostate gland. Without it, he might be out of work. Although he’s just a few months short of his 90th birthday, Asner is still a working actor. His latest project is “A Man and His Prostate,” a one-man play that’s part comedy, part drama, part medical show and all Asner. Well, all but the writing. Asner is quick to note the play isn’t autobiographical. Actually, the show really is a stage autobiography, but it’s not telling a story plucked from Asner’s interesting life. “A Man and His Prostate” was written by TV producer and screenwriter Ed. Weinberger (the period after “Ed.” is officially part of his signature), who was one of the creative forces behind “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” almost 50 years ago. It was Weinberger’s prostate that suddenly began acting up years ago on an Italian cruise ship plying the Mediterranean Sea. Weinberger wrote “A Man and his Prostate” after being hospitalized in Italy, diagnosed with prostate cancer and then sent back to the United States. Most men would return home to be treated for and hopefully recover from prostate cancer, which Weinberger did. In older men, that can mean surgical removal of the gland, which can negatively impact sexual performance.
Asner as Lou Grant
Weinberger, whose nine Emmy Awards for writing and producing makes him two up on Asner’s seven statuettes, wrote the prostate play, with Asner in mind to play the leading and only role. Asner brought the show to life about three years ago and continues to tour the country with it. He sees the play as both an entertainment piece and a public service announcement. “Every year, about 250,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 35,000 men die (from the disease),” Asner says in one of the few serious moments during an otherwise lively conversation. While the nature of the play might suggest it would work better with a male audience than female, “A Man and His Prostate” tends to attract a mixed audience of men and women. Ladies seem to get more of a kick out of the show than men, he says. “Some of the most raucous laughter we’ve had has been from women,” he says. “It gives them a chance to unwind, and that’s really what this show is. We talk about the excretory functions of the body, we talk about how important (prostate) examinations are.” Asner says he leaped at the chance to do the play the moment he saw Weinberger’s script. “Reading it was all I needed to do,” he says. “We have yet to perform it for an audience that doesn’t love it.” Seeing the play might be something of a stretch for audiences who only remember Asner for his two runs as Lou Grant. As different as the TV shows were Asner today

L I F E ST Y L E E N T E R TA I N M E N T — one comedy, the other drama — Asner’s character changed with each series, too. As news director on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” he combined gruff with partly silly to produce a character that could keep a straight face while those around him — the cast and the taping audience — couldn’t keep from laughing, even if it meant pausing the action because one of the cast members accidentally let out a laugh either before or after its time. But when Lou Grant became a newspaper editor, it didn’t take Asner long to embrace the term “hard-bitten.” “You can see that I’ve spent my life trying to figure out who I am,” he says with a laugh. So, Ed Asner, exactly who was Lou Grant? Was he a comedy foil to Mary Tyler Moore’s character? Or was he the gruff newspaper editor that intimidated reporters into producing great work? Actually, he was a little of both. Asner says it was never a stretch for him to play either side of Lou Grant. “He was a gruff, tough, sweet guy,” Asner says. “I’ve been playing blue-collar characters like him from day one (of my acting career).” In fact, decades before he played the role of a newspaper editor on television, he actually was an editor — for his high school paper in Kansas City. “One day, my beloved teacher walked by and asked me if I was thinking of journalism as a career,” he recalls. “And I said yeah. And he said, ‘I wouldn’t. You can’t make a living at it.’ This was in 1947. I said, ‘Oh, okay,’ and then a few years later I became an overnight sensation as an actor.” Because he’s succeeded in virtually every medium — the legitimate stage, movies, television and voiceovers — he can’t pick a favorite. “I love it all,” he says. Despite soon turning 90 in November, retirement isn’t a word that’s part of his vocabulary, nor does it sound like it ever will be. When he’s not touring with “A Man and his Prostate,” Asner is never unemployed. Besides, he’s a kid compared to another super senior entertainer who’s still hard at work. Asner knew Tony Bennett is still working but seemed surprised to learn Bennett is in his early 90s. “He’s 92?” Asner asks rhetorically? “So, he’s got me by three years, so what? I guess maybe I need to eat more spaghetti.” n

EFFORTLESS ORGANIZATION Whether you’ve hopped on the KonMari train or haven’t quite believed the tidying-up hype, here are helpful reminders for novice organizers or the meticulous maven. These 5 tips will keep your stylish self, stylishly organized. By Karina Anthony 1. What You See is What You Get Clear boxes provide for remarkable simple storage. My favorite type of shoe organization comes from The Container Store. Simply storing your shoes in their homes (their original boxes) can work however, as a visual person, I can’t always process exactly what I have with items in dark boxes and you may forget what you actually have stored in certain boxes. Racks are fine if you don’t have children or nosy pets, I prefer dust-free, tamperproof, clear boxes to display my shoes in 42

all of their glory. Once you’re able to see every pair you own, you’ll be less inclined to purchase pairs of similar styles and will find each pair easy to find. Bonus points, if you snap a photo of the pair inside each box as identifiers. 2. Hang in There Velvet hangers are a savior. Not only are they space-savers, but they keep all types of fabrics from slipping. Don’t worry if you find the act of replacing all your hangers at once daunting. Start by
replacing one portion of your closet at a time, first suits/blazers, followed by shirts/ blouses, then dresses/slacks/bottoms. You will be surprised at just how much space you save by replacing your plastic hangers, and your clothes will thank you to finally be free of those wire dry cleaner hangers. 3. Slow Down Fast fashion may be great for trendy items, however stick to your true style and you’ll find yourself purging less and living more
Did you know...
72% sustainably and minimalist. Furthermore, you’ll be purchasing more mindfully and will have classic pieces in your closet that you know you’ll love. Bonus, it will be a time saver in the morning when you’re getting ready because you’ll know you already love all the items in your closet! 4. Love It or List It I must agree with the KonMari method that you should only keep in your life what “sparks joy” therefore, if you don’t love it, list it! If you’re savvy with online selling, go ahead and list your unused items on eBay, OfferUp or Letgo (local seller marketplaces). However, there are many services now where you may simply send away your lightly used clothing, shoes and accessories, let them sell it for you and you’ll receive a commission! Thredup.com offers to simplify your life and show your closet who’s boss. Order a free cleanout kit, fill your bag with clothing, accessories, handbags, jewelry and shoes, send it off and feel instant stress relief. Then watch your account earnings rack up. For higher end items, TheRealReal is an online luxury consignment shop. Not only specializing in the resale of upscale designer goods, but also bringing sustainable luxury fashion to the homes of millions of people, TheRealReal’s team of authentication experts ensure items are of the utmost quality. It’s easy to consign with them, as they offer a list of designers they accept on their website with in-home pick up options now available in the Linwood area or free shipping labels to send your items directly to TheRealReal. 5. Be Yourself Find your own style of organization. The KonMari method may not resonate with everyone, therefore if you stay true to your personal style and incorporate these tips into your daily habits, you can also be an organized individual! Just remember, a bit of progress each day adds up to large results. As the late, great, Karl Lagerfeld, Creative Director of Chanel, said, “Improvise. Become more creative. ew Jersey is known as the Garden State, and while our strawberries, corn, and tomatoes might be considered the MVPS, we can’t forget the fruit of the sea — the amazing fish, bivalves, and shellfish caught off our coast. Fishing and crabbing at the Jersey Shore is a pastime enjoyed by generations of locals and visitors, and while there’s no denying that Dad’s Clambake is iconic, we are lucky enough to also have amazing local restaurants that serve up incredible seafood. While we may all be partial to our own favorite spots, here’s a look at some of the most iconic restaurants and some newcomers that are worthy of being on your summer seafood bucket list. Dock’s Oyster House has been a name synonymous with great seafood for more than a century — 122 years, to be exact. Four generations have carried on Harry “Dock” Dougherty’s vision of quality seafood in a comfortable, friendly environment, and it’s a standard that is still maintained to this day at the Atlantic City staple. “We are unique because of the history and the ties to Old Atlantic City,” said Maureen Dougherty, who owns and runs the restaurant with her husband, Frank Dougherty. “We take great pride in carrying on the family legacy that Frank’s great grandfather, Harry Dougherty,
started.” Perfectly balancing a blend of the classic oyster bar feel with upscale dining, Dock’s has gone through several renovations through the years but the focus on quality and consistence has remained, along with some of its most popular dishes like the Crab Au Gratin and the Seafood Fry. Of course, tastes and trends tend to change after more than 120 years, and Docks has evolved to give its loyal customers what they want. Fresh dishes like Lobster Mac and Cheese served in a half lobster and the Crispy Wasabi Tuna with Asian vegetables, Jasmine rice and Ponzu are crowd favorites. “People have come to rely on Dock’s for serving the best seafood at the Jersey Shore and we strive to live up to the standards Harry Dougherty created over a century ago,” said Dougherty. “The dedication, hard work and talent of the people at Dock’s also really sets us apart.” The heart and passion that has kept the Dougherty’s restaurant thriving through the years is also what has brought about the newest offering from Chef Lucas Manteca’s Bread + Butter Hospitality Group. Beachwood at the Dunes, located in Sea Isle City, is a contemporary fish house with a casual but sophisticated vibe, with multiple dining spaces that Chef Lucas feels promote different experiences and energy. He describes the food as ingredient driven, simple, and seasonal. “Restaurateurs these days are not very hands on,” said Manteca. “We are, and it feels (that way.)” It’s the same passion and handson involvement diners are used to seeing from Chef Lucas, the culinary genius behind The Red Store in Cape May Point, Quahog’s Seafood Shack in Stone Harbor, and the Taco Shop at the Cape May Airport. Not wanting to be pigeon-holed by declaring a theme for the new restaurant, Chef Lucas says he just wants to make awesome food. You can find that in dishes like the Fluke Sashimi with fennel and basil limeade, mushroom escabeche, white truffle scent, chive and maldon salt, and the Scallops a la Plancha, with balsamic and fig caramel, crispy quinoa, pistachios, and an herbed crust. Just don’t ask Chef what his favorite

dish is, or you will get the standard answer, “They all are, or they would not be on the menu!” However, he adds that “people love simplicity all around, so grilled fish is always very popular. We have a wood-burning grill that gives an amazing flavor to anything we cook here.” A wood-burning grill is also a key ingredient for serving up amazing seafood for another relatively new seafood-focused restaurant that’s making waves — Council Oak Fish located inside Hard Rock Hotel Casino Atlantic City. Open for just a year, it’s proven to be a powerhouse when it comes to impeccably prepared seafood. Their Wood Fired Octopus is a top seller for a good reason, offering a beautiful char that brings a perfect balance to the classic dish and giving diners a nostalgic taste reminiscent of a backyard BBQ. Served with salted potatoes and roasted peppers, it’s clear that their focus on quality allows their dishes to shine. “We focus on doing simple things right,” said Andrew Skilton, General Manager of Council Oak Fish. “Technique, quality, depth of flavor — you focus on those things and you’ll hit it out of the park every time.” Of course, credit also has to go to Executive Chef Quincy Logan, who enjoys taking classic dishes and elevating them to a new level, allowing diners to enjoy new twists on some of their favorites, like Spicy “Steamed” Mussels Posillipo and an incredible Wood Fired Halibut topped with a dusting of panko breadcrumbs and crumbled crispy Proscuitto on top of a rich yet sweet Piperade sauce. “I love combining different flavors and cultures together,” said Logan. “I’ve spent a lot of long nights in the kitchen working on
L I F E S T Y L E E AT S different dishes trying to get that combination just right. When you start with great basic ingredients and take the time to bring them together thoughtfully, it’s when the magic happens.” While Chef Logan enjoys exposing diners to different dishes and styles, he understands that some things just shouldn’t be overcomplicated. The restaurant is known for their shellfish pots, beautifully served dishes that are crammed full of goodness. While there are several different versions, the one consisting of Blue Lump Crab, King Crab, Andouille Sausage, Potatoes and Corn is a true taste of the Jersey Shore that is sure to delight anyone looking to savor the flavors of summer. When it comes to classics flavor done exceptionally well, The Pier House Restaurant is another big name recognized in the world of South Jersey seafood. The newly rebuilt and reopened signature restaurant at the iconic La Mer Beachfront Resort in Cape May is a favorite among locals and visitors, who are thrilled to see many of the classic menu items return. “Consistency builds credibility” is the philosophy Director of Food and Beverage, George Mallous goes by. It’s even on a sign that’s pinned above the door in the kitchen, where he works alongside his brother, Executive Chef Argerios Mallous. “We cook food the right way, not the easy way. ‘Scratch cookery’ is a popular term used these days, but it’s something we have always stood by. We get fresh fish daily right from the water we are next to. When you source form the highest quality ingredients, you’re going to consistently be able to put out great, flavorful dishes.” Dishes like Fire Grilled Octopus with hot pickled giardiniere, lemon and oregano; a simple yet delicious Grilled Bronzino, and Shrimp Saganaki featuring wild-caught shrimp with garlic, basil, and a San Marzano tomato wine sauce with feta and scallions are some of the classic, Mediterranean-style flavors guests love at the Jersey Shore staple that has reopened for the 2019 summer season. This year marks 50 years for the Jersey Shore landmark, La Mer, on the “quiet” side of Cape May. With the anniversary comes the addition of new luxury guest rooms and the newly imagined Pier House. The Andy family, which owns the property, has taken great care to make sure the beloved restaurant has the same feel and flavors devoted customers have loved for decades, and Chef George is excited to get to work and entertain in the new space. “It’s a recipe for great things to come” said Chef Argerios Mallous. “With a new canvas, a new palette and strong vibrant colors to work with, the future is bright and beautiful.” n

The Birth of a Winery
A glimpse inside Hunnicutt Winery’s road to success By Michael Bray
T
he decision was made at 35,000 thousand feet in the air. It was June 10, 2001 and Justin was on a plane to visit his high school, Eaglebrook School, for his 10-year reunion. Naturally, reunions have a tendency to evoke a sense of emotion and reflection. For Justin, this was more than a reunion trip; this would be the flight that earmarked the start of his winemaking career. Justin Hunnicutt Stevens graduated from University of California at Berkley with a B.A. in 1998. He would spend the next two years working for a commercial real estate firm in the San Francisco Bay Area. As Justin says, “while I was happy initially, after about six months, the novelty wore off.” It was during this time that Justin began spending weekends and any free time back in St. Helena with his family and friends. While Justin grew up in and around the wine business in Napa (his father, Don Stephens, is the proprietor of D.R. Stephens Estate), he never had plans of making it a career … until now. His first thought, though, was that winemaking would be a great thing to do in retirement. “I can’t possibly do it now,” he figured. However, as time went on, he grew increasingly tired of real estate and more and more depressed about the decades he would have to wait to pursue his dream. At the age of 24, while in-flight to his high school reunion, he was mindful enough to have the following epiphany: “I’m on an airplane spending all of my time reading about wine, not real estate! What am I waiting for… why not do it now!?” The decision was made. Upon returning home, he submitted his resignation and began his journey into the world of wine. In June of 2001, Justin received some invaluable advice from his friend, Cary Gott; find a job as a “cellar rat” for a small wine company with integrity. This was code for — find a job at a small shop that 58

offers the greatest work experience (and possibly the worst pay). He found this at Miner Family Wines. Here, Justin worked the harvest, the cellar, and the tasting room. It was during this time that he took viticulture and enology classes at night. In April 2002, he received a call from Saddleback Winery. They were looking for an operations manager. He jumped at the opportunity, as it offered him another perspective of the wine business, as well as the opportunity to use their winemaking equipment to make his own wine. What also made this special was that the owner of Saddleback was Nils Venge, the father of Justin’s childhood friend, Kirk Venge. Coincidentally, Kirk followed in his dad’s footsteps and became a winemaker. By harvest of 2002, Justin was making wine with Kirk’s help. He had enough money saved to carry the 2002-2003 harvest. He made a Zinfandel and Cabernet under the Hunnicutt label. “From the beginning, the Zin has always been strong,” says Justin. “So much so that the Connoisseurs’ Guide gave it 94 points in its first vintage.” But it wasn’t all as easy as the first vintage. From 2004 to 2007, he faced a lot of challenges, some involving the Department of Agriculture, vineyard site selection, and ultimately the ubiquitous small business challenge … cash flow. December 23, 2008 marked a milestone on the Hunnicutt journey when they purchased their new location at 3524 Silverado Trail in St. Helena. By April 2009, they opened their doors. Not only does Justin and his team at Hunnicutt pride themselves on making premium wine under their own label, but their location also serves as a custom crush facility for approximately twenty clients. Operating as a crush facility for select winemakers allows for cashflow, as well as relationships with top winemakers and brands.
My first taste of Hunnicutt wines was at a wine dinner at the Knife & Fork Inn in 2013. My next encounter was a visit to the winery in 2017 for my brother’s wedding. Each time I was blown away by Justin’s passion for winemaking and, yes, the quality of the wines. However, equally impressive is the high level of integrity he brings to the craft — never sacrificing values or quality for production or profit. While the total production at Hunnicutt remains small, at approximately 4,000 cases, the story and success of Hunnicutt will continue to grow. If you can find some, I urge you to treat yourself. Cheers,

Catch of the Day Every Day at Phillips

It all started as a family fishing and processing business 100 years ago in Hoopers Island, Maryland. A.E. Phillips and his son would supply wild crabs, fish, and oysters from the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore restaurants and fishmongers every day by steamship. In 1956, the family opened their first Phillips Seafood Restaurant in Ocean City, Maryland. Today, Phillips has expanded to many new locations including Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Atlantic City. Regardless of the location — airport food courts, casinos, or full-service restaurants — Phillips sticks to its long-standing family principles: serve classic seafood favorites, provide outstanding service, and create a memorable dining experience for their guests. For the last 10 years, Phillips in Atlantic City has been part of that culinary history serving up lunch and dinner options just like its sister locations. What makes Phillips in AC so special is, no doubt, its location. Situated in The Playground at Caesars Pier, Phillips AC offers guests upscale dining as well as an interactive dining experience with their open exhibition kitchen. And, from its third-floor vantage point, guests not only get fine quality food, but stunning views of the beach and Boardwalk while dining or

having a cocktail. In a hurry with no time for a sit-down meal? No problem, you can get some of your Phillips favorites right on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at the Phillips Seafood Shack in the front of The Playground Pier. Order and go for some fast, but yummy, signature items including seafood soups, seafood baskets, and crab cake sandwiches, along with fruity frozen drinks to keep you cool on the beach and the Boardwalk. Although Phillips is deep-rooted in tradition, new and exciting menu items are always being added to the menu. Michelle Torres, Corporate Director of Marketing for Phillips Seafood Restaurant, sees their most recent menu additions as a plus for guests and chef alike. According to Torres, “The Chefs Features section of the menu gives our chef an opportunity to be creative and offer our guests a variety.” So, what’s on the new Chef Features menu? The Spicy Shrimp, fried shrimp tossed in a spicy garlic sauce and served over coleslaw, makes for a nice addition to the tried and true menu. If you can’t decide between surf or turf options, Phillips now offers two new combinations like the Ultimate Chicken Chesapeake — a panko crusted chicken breast topped with shrimp, lobster, crab, bacon, tomato, asparagus and parmesan cream sauce accompanied with tri-color potatoes. If you’re more of a traditional surf & turf eater, try the

Steak & Crab — a 6-oz. pub sirloin plus a Hoopers Island crab cake served with Yukon mashed potatoes and asparagus. In addition to new menu choices, Phillips offers special nights and promotions all year round starting with Happy Hour every day where guests can partake in some delicious appetizers and special prices on beer, wine, and cocktails. Other specials are their Half Price Bottles of wine on Thursdays, along with new specials popping up seasonally. If you are in the mood for clams and all the fixings that go with it, any day of the year, nothing tops the Clam Bake for Two special at Phillips. Your seafood feast includes two whole lobsters, snow crab legs, steamed shrimp, clams, mussels, potatoes, and corn on the cob. You will definitely get your hands dirty, but don’t worry because the Clam Bake for Two comes complete with lobster bibs to catch all the hot drawn butter that is generously available for dipping. Phillips restaurants take pride in serving quality seafood, and their commitment to excellence and consistency is not a secret. Over the years, the restaurants have been recognized by many publications and business journals racking up numerous accolades and awards. For example, Casino Player Magazine voted Phillips as Best Seafood in the Best Dining & Nightlife category. Being recognized by business journals is flattering, but nothing is better than great endorsements from pleased and satiated guests. For example, Northfield, New Jersey resident Ron Gaskill enjoys a walk by the beach and a good meal. Gaskill sums up how Phillips is his go-to-spot, “When I’m walking the Boardwalk and looking for a bite, nothing beats a bowl of Phillips’ clam chowder —– chock-full of clams and authentic flavor — and right on the AC boardwalk.” In the mood now for some Phillips Seafood classics like their famous Marylandstyle crab cakes or maybe try a new menu item? Head over to the AC Boardwalk for the catch of the day — every day at Phillips. n

Retiring Assistance
Are you retiring in New Jersey? You might be eligible for some tax relief. IF YOU’VE BEEN LIVING IN THE GARDEN STATE for any length of time, you don’t need to read a magazine to know that you’re being taxed at every turn. Property taxes, state income taxes, even sales taxes are higher than in most other states. Luckily, the state of New Jersey does have some rather unique tax laws in place designed to help retirees. Like many tax laws, this relief comes with some complicated rules that could cost you thousands if you’re not planning carefully. Retirement Income Exclusion on State Income Tax The state provides an exclusion where you don’t have to pay state income tax on your pension, annuity, or IRA withdrawals if certain criteria are met. The amount of this retirement income that can be excluded from taxation can be as much as $80,000 for couples in 2019. It goes up to $100,000 in 2020 where it is set to stay. In order to qualify, you must be age 62 or older, or disabled, and have a gross income of $100,000 or less. Careful consideration should be made as to what defines “gross income” as it’s a different figure than the “Modified Adjusted Gross Income” that the federal government often uses. Your gross or total income includes most sources of income other than N.J. nontaxable items such as Social Security benefits, tax free or municipal bond interest received, and federal government bond interest. The $100,000 threshold is a hard line, so depending on your situation, it could be crucial to stay under a gross income of $100,000. Careful planning might be needed as falling just over this threshold could cost you as much as $2,700 more in state income taxes if all your income was retirement income. If you’re close to this $100k threshold, it may make more sense to invest in more municipal or treasury bonds whose interest isn’t included, as opposed to taxable bonds whose interest gets added to your gross income. Additionally, you may want to be careful when taking IRA distributions to not push yourself over this threshold. Working with a diligent financial planner and accountant should keep your tax situation in mind as you develop any investment portfolio and retirement income strategy. 66

Property Tax Relief: Senior Freeze New Jersey also offers a property tax relief program that is designed to help older N.J. residents. The property tax relief is referred to as a “Senior Freeze” on your property tax. The program works as a reimbursement of some of your tax paid. If you do qualify, you would be given a property tax base amount for which you’d still be responsible. You would then pay your regular property taxes when they come due and then the state would reimburse you any amount that exceeds your base that was established. To qualify, you or your spouse must be at least age 65, or actually receiving Social Security disability payments, and use the property that you’re paying the tax on as your principal residence. Additionally, you must have lived in New Jersey continuously as a renter or home owner for the last 10 years. Moreover, you must have owned and lived in your home that you’re seeking the senior freeze for the last 3 years and paid the full amount of property taxes due on your home. Finally, you have to fall within income limits. Here, however, the state has you include essentially all income, including social security and taxexempt interest. For the past several years, this limit has been $70,000. This could be adjusted upward in 2019 to account for inflation although it can be changed back to $70,000 pending the finalization of their budget. There are a few other details that may disqualify you for this relief. N.J.’s treasury website (www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/questions/senior-freeze. shtml) has an interactive questionnaire that can allow you to see if you may qualify. To apply, you would file Form PTR-1 on the Division of Taxation’s website. n
