Symbiosis Wendy Lee

You may be thinking: what does symbiosis have to do with sports and exercise? Well, it’s the concept of symbiosis, balance and mutually beneficial relationships. As students, we are constantly under pressure to manage our time wisely and devote ourselves to so many activities, that sometimes we question if we can divide ourselves, or clone ourselves to finish all tasks on time, but have fun at the same time.

Even though most students prioritize their studies over anything, the difference between the ones who succeed and those who don’t, lies in their level of exercise. Believe it or not, exercise is closely related to our academic performance -- it’s essential! Think about the burst of energy and sense of achievement that surprises you after a training session or just a quick jog. This is because your endorphin levels are rising and stress levels are decreasing, ultimately preparing you for the journey ahead.

Exercise increases concentration levels, causing blood to flow to the brain, stimulating neurons and promoting cell growth, particularly in the hippocampus. That’s not all! Just a simple 20-minute exercise will strengthen your memory as well, delivering proteins to your brain and therefore increase your cognitive performance.Your physical health is what drives your endurance and increases your energy levels for studying.

Still can’t believe it? A recent Korean newspaper article included a section called, “‘Korean Bar Exam D-96’ Great tips from the experienced”, where Korean Bar Exam takers shared their tips in preparing for the exam. The significance of this section can be seen in the “Maintaining health” 2

column of the table where these tips are mentioned: “Go on a walk while reading revision notes”, “A light jog or workout at home for 20 minutes”, and “Continue on with sports with a modified number of training sessions”.

It cannot harm one to exercise based on these results and recommendations that make the benefits of exercise crystal clear. So get up, and move your body, free yourself from remaining sedentary and enjoy the liberty your body provides for you and you only!

Dealing With Stress Through Sports & Exercising Ahyoung Kim

All of you reading this article will have experienced breathing heavily as if your lungs are dysfunctional. Or the experience of unending headaches. These experiences mainly occur from an overload of stress. When you have something that’s due in a few days the reactions above may happen to you. Or when preparing for a test that seems to determine your life you may go through these overload of emotions. But do not worry when this happens to you, because there are solutions. One of the best solutions to this problem is exercise and light sports.

First, exercise. Exercising can easily relieve stress since it releases the endorphins in your brain. What are endorphins you might ask? Endorphins are hormones that increase pleasure and happiness while reducing pain. Some of the exercises that are recommended for you are cycling, dancing, yoga and swimming. Luckily, NLCS Jeju has wonderful CCA and Bryant programmes that provide endorphins along with stress relief so do try and join. 4

Furthermore, playing light sports could also help relieve stress. As aforementioned, endorphins are provided when exercising and moving your body. But specifically, it is produced when your heart rate increases. This means that playing light sports would also provide a lot of endorphins. Simple sports such as jogging, table tennis, or even walking around our school campus could increase your heart rate, providing you with more endorphins.

If panic attacks or sudden pain approach you due to overloading stress, please do try some of the suggested exercises to relieve the pain. I was also a victim of a sudden panic attack due to deadlines and cycling CCA really did help me relieve the pain along with stress. Our NLCS Jeju Sports Department supports each students’ physical and mental wellbeing and you can really benefit from looking into some of the wonderful activities our school offers!

Best Masks for Sports Jay Jung

For the last 2 years, we have been suffering. During sports, people have been gasping for breath and even fainted due to the lack of air. It is considered an “enemy” during the competitions. This was all because of the MASKS. Ever since the COVID outbreak, people inevitably had to wear masks even while playing sports.

At first, people just dealt with it. However, the more and more they kept using it them, they instinctively noticed that the masks are not a good fit for working out. After every exercise, people’s masks were soaked with nasty puddles of sweat, and an undesirable heat welcomed them. As the issue became serious, some companies started to develop what they call “Sports Masks”. These masks are designed for exercising, making it dry quicker and most of all, making customers more capable of breathing freely.

For athletes, Sports Maks became the new obsession. Starting with the UA Sports Mask(mask developed by Under Armour), mass amounts were sold as people wanted to elevate their quality of life. On Youtube, reviews of masks were exploding on the server, triggering all the potential customers that were on the border of purchasing the mask. A new sector of the sports business was gaining popularity.

Surprisingly, after people had used them thoroughly, negative rumours were spread like wildfire, contradicting their first impressions. Many customers complained about the stuffy air inside, the heavy nature of the masks, and most importantly, their sustainability. The masks were usually

priced between $10-20, which is quite pricey for a pair of masks that can only be used 20 times after washing.

After scrutinizing the exact data of these masks, some of the customers went back to using the disposable masks while some continue to praise the well-built sports masks. After all, the continuous usage all depends on their personal experiences and their opinions. However, it remains a fact that masks negatively downgrade the performance, ranging from a day to day stroll, to competition-level sports. Humanity must push itself to the boundary, to gift people a completely new and mind-blowing solution. To put an end to a less than optimal sports performance. This is the next step for sports masks!

Sports Movies for Movie Nights Sharon Yoon (Year 8)

“Movie Nights” in boarding houses are one of the key events that bring students together. A good movie can immediately lead you to form a bond between those who enjoy it together. If you are ever searching for a movie to watch, what about sports-based movies? These movies are always a success as they include messages of passion, perseverance, grit, and courage. These themes of several sports movies encourage the audiences to be brave, and courageous and achieve their goals.

Some famous examples of sport-based movies you can watch with your friends are:

Korea. A Korean movie depicting a real story about a united table-tennis team consisting of both South and North Koreans. The main characters, Li Bun-hui and Hyun Jung-Hwa are two talented female table tennis players who meet in a Korean national team. The movie was released in 2012,

gaining large attention for presenting both excitement and a heart-warming story.

The Blind Side. A movie released in 2009, is also based on a true story and a true player -Michael Oher. Michael, as an African-American teenager, is offered help by a white family and learns to play American football. He later develops as an excellent player and achieves his dreams. The fact of how the family saw the potential of a child and decided to contribute to him is very inspirational.
