Having an Interview with Mr.Roberts, our new Head of PE - Inwook Hwang, Luke Song Mr.Roberts became our new head of PE starting from this academic year. For those of who might be still confused, Mr. Cai Roberts who used to be in our school has left this year, and Mr. Glenn Roberts, our new head of sports director has arrived at our school. He introduced us about some of the improvements in the sports hall that have been made over the last summer break and our new PE programme. Firstly, the new surface of the floor was repolished in two dance rooms, the gymnastics room, the fitness room, and lastly, the sports hall. The store room is also tidied up and the new footballs and rugby balls are added. We also have 4 new mobile basketball hoops in the sports hall. For the old ones, PE department has put it in the school - two for the juniors in halla court, and another two for the seniors in the communal area in between the sports hall and canteen. Around the astro, the new netting which is less rigid was installed expecting to withstand the typhoon better and cushion the other impacts. There are also safety sports padding that will go around the perimeter of the astroturf along the touch line. Lastly for the swimming pool, the lane ropes are replaced with the new ones. Additionally, PE department is further planning to have new rugby and football posts and new paint on the astro so that each sport can be played more safely as well as and the rugby try line and the football end line can be distinguished much easier. About the PE programme, the department has launched a new programme called “through school programme” and 2

Mr.Roberts emphasized that the “consistency” and the “continuity” are the key concepts to this programme. According to Mr.Roberts, by creating a building block and learning basic skills through this programme, he said that juniors will be more prepared for the senior sports programme. He also mentioned that the PE department is trying to create more variety of activities so that more students can be engaged into the activities and be motivated to participate. The ultimate aim for this plan is to make students feel more enjoyment, leading them to choose sports for their CCA. Mr.Roberts said this will result in the bigger scale of the sports squad in NLCS, eventually making the team better and more competitive for the tournament.

How COVID-19 has affected fan experience within sports - Marty Sumatra Fan experience is integral to sports: good fan experience makes fans more willing to engage with their teams and creates a connection between fans and icons within sports. Without the role of fans, the culture of sports that we know today would cease to exist. Fans, especially fanatics, are one of the main producers of revenue for sports teams, and good fan experience could help sustain a good relationship between fans and the teams they support. A major focal point for improving fan experience has been through stadiums. Through engagement at stadiums, many sports fanatics are born and their commitment is cultivated through exciting atmospheres and high-quality games, all of which leads to a better revenue, with sports fanatics spending 175% more money than casual viewers. Good fan experience can help teams stay relevant during poor performance or losing matches. In today’s world, improving 3

fan experience is a core aspect of sport entertainment’s brand strategy. However, COVID-19 has created many issues for fan experience and the connection between fans and sports teams. It is not safe for sports games to be played out as they usually can, so many stations have resorted to replaying old games, which can decrease quality fan experience. Other countries have resorted to playing games in empty stadiums after frequent testing of the athletes, but this can isolate fans, who greatly benefit from watching games in person. It has become extremely difficult for sports teams to maintain enthusiasm amongst both casual and fanatic fans, and this can result in poor revenue that may not be able to support everyone with a career within sports. This has a further effect of possibly driving some out of jobs, which might further limit fan devotion. Currently, the culture of sports will be forced to change, for our own safety, and fan experience may be permanently affected by the influence of COVID-19.

Whether you like it or not, sports and politics are inseparable - Nick Oh Why is it that so many people view sports as being separate from politics? With the relatively recent development of media and the recent events that relate to the BLM protests like the Milwaukee Bucks NBA playoff boycott, the sports audience is becoming more aware of the relationship between sports and politics. For a long time, sports and politics have been linked to each other - Governments have used sports as a way to demonstrate their ideologies or to exert influence on its people and athletes have used its own sporting platform to exercise their political views and support wider conversations about civil rights. All this was done and possible because sporting events are in the attention of the global community making it an ideal place to publicize. FIFA claims that 3.572 billion people watched the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and the final itself was seen live by a combined 1.12 billion viewers worldwide. Also, the IOC estimates that a combined 3.5 billion people watched the Rio Olympics in 2016. This is only the beginning. Imagine all the people that watch the NBA, the EPL, and the NFL; the list is endless. Aware of the large audience that sporting events bring in, various leaders and athletes have frequently used sports to assert their political stances. In 1936, Hitler used the Berlin Olympics to show off his regime and its ideologies to the global community by ordering the Reich Sports Field, a sports complex to be used for the Berlin Olympics, to be draped in Nazi banners and symbols.

In 1967, Boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who was alongside many Americans that opposed the Vietnamese war for its devastation and violence, refused to serve in the Vietnamese war claiming “I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong”. He was soon sentenced to five years in prison, fined $10,000, and banned from boxing for three years by authorities.Yet, Muhammad Ali became the figure and the empowerment of the black civil rights movement in the US. In the 1972 Munich Olympics, US representatives Tommie Smith and John Carlos, wearing black gloves, raised their fists in the air to express their participation in the black civil rights movement. More recently was the Milwaukee Bucks boycott. What started as the Milwaukee Bucks' decision to boycott their NBA playoff game following the police shooting of Jacob Blake led to a wave of similar protests across the American sports scene. After the Bucks decided to not play, the NBA soon announced it would postpone games in three different playoff series. The WNBA and the MLS acted in solidarity with the Bucks' players by also cancelling or postponing their games. Sports is often seen as leisure and thus separate from serious matters like politics. However, as shown above, sports have always played a part in the international stage in expressing national strength and in exerting political influence on the mass audience. Even at the individual level, athletes have taken the political power that comes from their sporting platforms and used it to amplify their discussions. Indeed, whether you like it or not, sports and politics are inseparable.
