An Exceptional British Education in Beautiful Korea
Dear Future Parents of NLCS Jeju
Choosing a school for your son or daughter is one of the most important decisions you will undertake and we are delighted that you are considering NLCS Jeju.
At NLCS Jeju we are building on the foundations created in North London over 170 years ago to foster an optimal environment for our community of boys and girls. Our parents are very supportive of the school and have many varied reasons why they have chosen us. For many parents they appreciate that under our care and guidance their child is cheerful, balanced, at ease with themselves and each other - yet excited and enthused by the challenges before them. They recognise that we succeed in combining academic excellence with a wealth of co-curicular opportunities, all underpinned by a deep commitment to the individual needs and enthusiasms of each student. They especially like that we encourage and develop scholarship and academic curiosity.
Every child matters at NLCS Jeju and as Principal I believe passionately in the importance of the individual. We value each and every student at NLCS Jeju in their own right ensuring they are encouraged to develop their talents to the full in a community where there are no stereotypes and where every achievement, however small, is celebrated. Whilst we enioy excellent facilities in a prime location, it is our people that make our school a special place, our staff embodies a wide range of academic and professional experience and a wealth of enthusiasm. Our parents are tremendously supportive and contribute a huge amount of time and energy to supporting our activities and events. Our students throughout the School are a real delight to teach and have a genuine love for learning. I look forward to meeting you in the very near future.
Yours Sincerely
Lynne Oldfield PrincipalA Proud History
NLCS Jeju has a proud history which stretches back over 170 years. North London Collegiate School was founded in North London, United Kingdom in 1850 by Ms. Frances Mary Buss. Ms. Buss was a true pioneer of education for girls. She believed in equality for all and set up a school which prospered and thrived and has changed the face of learing for girls. Ms. Buss, supported by her family, was in place for over forty years and the care and nature of every girl who studied there was her priority.
Following in her footsteps were other strong and pioneering educators including Ms. Isabella Drummond, Ms. Sophie Bryant and Ms. Kitty Anderson. A more recent Headmistress was Ms. Bernice McCabe, was Headmistress for over twenty years and was well known for her belief in the transformational powers of the performing arts. She had a vision of NLCS in the world of international education and her drive and ambition saw the opening of NLCS Jeju in 2011.
NLCS Jeju is the founding school in Global Education City - a centre of international education on the idyllic South Korean island of Jeju. NLCS Jeju is now well known to Korean parents as a school which nurtures and develops global citizens of today and tomorrow.
A Family of Schools
We are the first of a small collection of international schools which have grown from the vision established in North London in 1850. Today the schools number five in total - London, Jeju, Singapore, Dubai and Ho Chi Minh City, and the family is growing.
Each school shares a single vision and an ethos which is built upon the Three Pillars of an NLCS education
Academic Excellence - Our students have a love of learning and our teachers help them fulfil their potential Pastoral Care - A happy, healthy child is a successful child
Beyond The Classroom - An amazing co-curricular programme enables every single child to pursue their passions and dreams
NLCS Jeju
NLCS Jeju is situated on the UNESCO heritage island of Jeju. The island is a peaceful haven of oreums, beaches, forests and farms. It is an idyllic landscape for an international school. The school was founded in 2011 and exists to provide a British education to Korean and international students.
As it is within a special education zone, Korean citizens, residents and students are welcome to apply. Our students are Korean passport holders, Chinese passport holders, and many more.
The school is renowned for academic excellence and nurturing talented, globally minded young people who go on to the finest universities around the world and then on to fulfilling careers in areas as diverse as Medicine, Law, Research, Theatre, Marketing and Advertising.
One Whole School
NLCS Jeju has 1500 students across three schools. We welcome students from the age of 4 until 18. We follow a British system of year groups as follows -
First School - Reception - Year 2 (Ages 4 - 7) - Key Stage 1
Lower School - Years 3 - 6 (Ages 7 - 11) - Key Stage 2
Senior School - Years 7 - 11 (Ages 11 - 16) - Key Stage 3 and 4 (IGCSE)
Sixth Form - Year 12 - 13 (Ages 16 - 18) Key Stage 5 (IBDP)
The schools are situated in three separate buildings on one campus, with their own facilities and all also benefit from shared Arts and Sports areas. We believe very strongly in collaboration across the schools and we view this as one journey from start to finish. From the moment you join NLCS Jeju we are preparing you for success in academics and in life.
Junior School
The aims of our Junior School are to provide an ambitious educational programme for all our students and to enable each one to develop academic confidence and independence in his or her learning. Our Junior School is a friendly and warm place for boys and girls aged 4 to I I (Reception - Year 6). We follow a British curriculum and all teaching (except for Korean, Mandarin and other languages) is in English. The students chat in English in the playgrounds and in all school based activities. An easy bilingualism before the move to Senior School is our aim for every child.
The class sizes remain small to ensure quality interaction between students and teachers. Within this supportive community the students are absorbed into the fun and adventure of learning. Currently we have over 500 students, from Korea and also a proportion who are international students from China. Japan, UK. and New Zealand. Our highest priority is to maintain a team of outstanding teachers who will inspire and encourage each student.
Students in the Junior School follow a curriculum based on that of NLCS UK. This is an academically ambitious programme of learning where our teachers create an environment in which children are able to actively discover new skills, knowledge and understanding.
We aim to develop internationally-minded young people with an understanding of their responsibility to each other and the wider community.
We divide the Junior School into First and Lower Schools. This allows us to focus on each crucial stage. We ensure that each child is supported in all academic areas and we pay particular attention to English language skills. We believe that the correct guidance and teaching early on sows the seeds for future academic success.
The First School benefits from small class sizes, large classrooms with distinct learning areas and devoted teachers, each with their own Learning Assistants.
Students move seamlessly from First School up to Lower School. There, they build upon all they have learned in the early years. They start to become more independent in their learning and they benefit from the support of a class teacher and also from individual subject teachers.
Social and pastoral support is also crucial. We aim to develop each child to be the best that they can be in all areas. Every child in the Junior School, from years 3 - 6 belongs to a house, just as they do in the Senior School. As part of a house team, students learn to work with one another, supporting and leading different ages. There are ample opportunities to become a student leader and also to engage with sports, service, the arts and much more.
Senior School
Our Senior School is one of the most successful and academically respected across Korea and Asia. We are very proud of the achievements of our students at IGCSE (taken at the end of Year I I) and also at IBDP. Our IBDP results place us among the top 60 schools in the world and the best in South Korea* Students are divided into three Key Stages - 3, 4 and 5 with a curriculum designed for each age to maximise their potential.
* Class of 2022 IBDP ResultThe School itself is large and well designed with ample space to study together and alone. Facilities are truly world class. Students stage impromptu busking sessions, pop-up fundraisers, academic discussions and lectures and so much more. It is a school which resonates with life and joy from the moment the doors open each morning!
Boarding and Day
Our students have the option to attend as day students or to board in one of our boarding homes under the care and supervision of our experienced and friendly boarding home teams.
Our boarders have access to our facilities at all times. Their school lives do not stop at 5.20 but carry on into evenings and weekends. The homes accommodate students from year 5 onwards and are divided into Senior and Sixth Form. The boarding teams organise activities, excursions and trips on a daily basis. There is never a dull moment.
Our day students mainly live in one of the many housing complexes in and around the Global Education City. Most apartments and houses are within walking distance of school. We also have our own bus service from different points on Jeju and travel by car is also very easy.
Our Boarding Homes
We consider our boarders as family. They all live in carefully designed homes and their every need is met. When boarders arrive they are assigned to their homes. Many students in Years 5-11 prefer to share - and many friendships for life are formed within the homes.
Boarding Life
Boarding Homes
All boarding students from Year 5 - 11 live in our senior homes. These are designed so boys and girls live separately though they come together for leisure or study in the evenings and at weekends.
Each home has potential for every passion and hobby - Art Rooms, Music Rooms, Karaoke Rooms to name but a few. There are pool tables and areas for computer games. Each home hosts movie nights and cookery classes and there are lots of friendly competitions in all kinds of sports such as Football, Netball, Rounders and Rugby.
One of the most important things is the supervised and supported prep time. Students have access to a quiet study environment. They can ask for and receive support and advice. We aim to create a nurturing atmosphere where all students can achieve their greatest potential. It goes without saying that we provide a home where sleep, diet and exercise are monitored and children are encouraged to develop healthy habits.
Our youngest boarders (usually Year 5 & 6) are supported within the boarding homes with special programmes, access to Junior School teachers and mentoring from older students who become big brothers and sisters.
“We have also developed an Academic Enhancement Programme which runs all year round.”
Sixth Form
Our Year 12 and 13 have special homes - Halla East and Halla North, where their lifestyle is more independent as we work towards preparing them for university and life beyond school. Life skills are learned and the young adults enjoy the
Our Teachers
At NLCS Jeju we are well known for the quality of our teaching. Our teachers are at the top of their profession and each one is chosen carefully for their experience, skills and knowledge. Our teachers inspire all their students to go further than they dreamed possible. The atmosphere is one that promotes learning and true understanding of a subject. Teachers encourage critical thinking debate, creativity and discussion and ensure the use of academic English at all times.
The majority of our teachers come from the UK with a percentage from Australia, South Africa, the US and many other countries. We also employ a significant number of Mandarin teachers from China and Korean teachers from here in Korea.
Most teachers have decades of experience teaching at home and around the world. They are all experts in the IB and IGCSE systems and all contribute to the incredible results that we achieve as a school.
We support our teachers with ongoing Professional Development programmes and a proactive department structure.

"I can say with confidence that our school provides students with many different opportunities to explore various things: whether it is academics, sports, arts, service, etc. Some of the special experiences I had here since Year 5 involve competing in national netball competitions, going abroad to compete in competitions numerous times, participating in the musical and opera held in our school as a flautist, having the chance to be in the sound tech team, arranging the Christmas Bazaar and many more. These are some of the opportunities that the school provides to every student that others may not experience. The opportunities I have had at NLCS Jeju have helped me to become the person I am now."

Our students are actively encouraged to continue to play a musical instrument throughout their time at NLCS Jeju. Many students join orchestras and ensembles - large and small - and play for pleasure, for leisure, for study and in support of assemblies, ceremonies and productions. Many students attain ABRSM Grade 8 as they progress through the School and this really adds a string to their bow as they apply for elite universities.
We have a thriving Drama department and many students choose Theatre Studies as part of a well rounded education. Recent productions have included The Tempest, Alice in Wonderland, Little Shop of Horrors and Wicked. Dance is also popular - all students in Senior School take Dance once a week. This is wonderful for creativity and imagination whatever the students' ages.
Our Visual Arts department has an exceptional record at both IBDP and IGCSE. Our IB Visual Arts (IBVA) Shows are a highlight of the School calendar and are a very worthy prelude to Arts Week which involves the whole school, every student and up to I 20 performances. Whatever your passion we can nurture it and support it. You may want to create ceramics or explore Greek tragedy.
