IBDP RESULTS SUMMER RENOVATIONS BOARDING

8

A Letter From The Principal A very warm welcome back to our faculty and students who as our first days have shown are excited and very happy to be returning to School after the summer holidays. We are also delighted to welcome our new students and faculty to North London Collegiate School which means that our school is almost at 100% of its allowed roll. This year has been the most challenging for us to ensure that we were able to get all our new staff in school for the start of the term. We have new staff arriving at NLCS Jeju from the beginning of July to ensure that everyone is in place but in three cases staff have been delayed. Our visa process has been beset by issues this year as British (UK) nationals were denied visas until late April 2021 and the process has been elongated by the immigration authorities and can take many months to complete. Our heartfelt sympathies also extend to some of our existing faculty who have experienced family bereavements over the summer and so returned to home countries. We have contingency measures in place so that the education of all is unaffected. It may not have been the start we wanted, having to go to some reduced capacity as Jeju is currently at Level 4 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we will continue to operate the most stringent precautionary measures to keep our community safe. We are pleased though that our capacity rota allowed for every student to be in School during the first few days. NLCS Jeju has much to celebrate as we approach our tenth anniversary of opening in September. This summer our students gained their best ever examination results in both IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme. This is testament to the hard work and resilience of our students and also their teachers who have supported the students with tremendous commitment both academically and pastorally. I refer you to my recent letter on our academic achievements. LINK The campus has been very busy over the summer and many improvements have been completed. We still have further capital projects which are underway for this term and the Bursar will update the community by letter this coming week and you can see within this newsletter, too.

School is underway and as always our students and faculty are exceptionally busy and fully engaged, as evident from some achievements over the summer. Over the coming weeks this will be very evident in all that we do and I remind you to follow us on our many social media channels (see below for details) Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

We are delighted to be back at School! We are sorry that we have had to open at a reduced capacity for the first few days but we are happy to have welcomed all our students back to learning - whether in School or online. We will keep you updated on all changes and developments as things change.

IBDP RESULTS It has been another exceptional year for NLCS Jeju in terms of IBDP exam results. In extraordinary times, our Class of 2021 have done incredibly well. AVP - IBDP Coordinator, Justine Oliver shares her thoughts. “We are delighted that, for the second year running, our students achieved an outstanding average of 39 points. Once again, over 50% our students scored 40+ points. A 39 points average is exceptional at any time, yet our students did this in the toughest of times and by following the rigorous exam route. Our Class of 2021 now move on to the next chapter of their education with all the confidence and knowledge that this affords. I wish each and every member of Class of 2021 all the very best for their future endeavours. “

Average score Diploma - 39.04 Two 45s 7 - 46.2% 7/6 - 82.1 % 40+ - 50.4% 42+ - 31.9%

SUMMER RUGBY As School closed for summer, there was no rest for our Middle School Rugby squad who immediately went out on tour! They all travelled to the GyeongSan tournament on the mainland with Coach - Mr Sebastien Crebier and Sports Assistant and general fixer, Ms Jenny Kwon. Mr Neil Tamlyn - AVP - Academic, accompanied the squad which included his son, Archie Tamlyn,Year 10. The team won their first match easily but lost in the semi finals. They all felt enriched by the whole experience. Mr Tamlyn tells us all about it “What a privilege it has been to spend the last week with the Middle School Rugby squad at the Gyeong San tournament. Over the last eight years we have taken rugby success for granted at NLCS Jeju but not many have had the opportunity to see first hand why this happens. We come up against established ‘rugby schools’ in every competition yet without taking time from the curriculum for training we end up either winning or being in the finals almost every year.

Why is this? At least one Korean Professor has asked this question and the answer must lie in the care, support and coaching that Mr Long established and is most recently given to the boys by Mr Crebier and ‘Princess’ Jenny (Ms Kwon). Their leadership is exceptional down to the planning of complex logistics, communications, nutrition and thoughtful, well-judged evening team talks. We owe a lot to them and the result is a priceless experience for the boys as they are prepared for and go into each well-marshaled battle. The tension on the eve of big match days is tangible and, win or lose, the resulting joy, tears, camaraderie and endorphins combine to make these rugby trips one of the most enjoyable experiences we offer. Mention must also be made of the parents and families who are exceptional in their support during the matches and after. I am in no doubt that these adventures build friendships, confidence and perspective and hold the boys in better stead for not just the next sporting challenge, but a healthy, happy life and their academic studies. Bring on the Nationals!” Well done, boys and we look forward to the next tournament.

SUMMER RENOVATIONS

Over the summer break there has been so much work going on in School! Our Bursar, Mr Luke Godley, tells us about an extraordinary eight weeks of activity! “As with most premium international schools the summer break gives the Facilities & Operations teams at NLCS Jeju the opportunity to improve, and add to, the already excellent facilities. However the last eight weeks were some of the busiest I have seen in my 15 years as a Bursar. The 24 acre campus was a hive of activity with much needed construction, refurbishment and general maintenance taking place. I have listed below some of the key initiatives, but the list is certainly not exhaustive. The investment and hard work that has taken place makes me extremely proud as Bursar of NLCS Jeju and I am sure that students and the wider School community will benefit tremendously.” Works to look out for Whole School Re-decoration second floor of the Senior School Installation of Second Boiler for Sports Centre and Canteen New flooring in Library 2nd & 3rd floor Installation of lighting between Senior School and Sports Centre Access control gates for at the main entrance and to the Boarding Homes Re-decoration of Smiley Cafe and new furniture New flooring in the PAC foyer Re-decoration of the Music Department and new furniture Repainting of the Green Gallery Construction of a new Tuck Shop Reconfiguration of Administration offices Stairwells repainting Art classrooms repainted Admissions office repainted Construction of new office for Principal’s PA

Thank you to teacher, GwangHo Im who has shared these pictures and who personally volunteered there over the holidays. Watch this space for how you can help these dogs further!

Supia - Service Bryant Initiative Supia is a Bryant service group established to protect the environment of Jeju. This term, air purification plants in eco-friendly pots and frames decorated using Scandiamos were delivered to Donggwang Hyo-do Village, a medical welfare facility for the elderly. The team tell us “In the first week, we made posters and articles about plastic recycling and upcycling. It will be uploaded on Supia’s Instagram in the form of a portfolio later, and the poster will be used for future picket activities. In the second week, we had conducted an activity called “plocking”, which is pick up trash while walking around Jeju Olle Trail. This flocking activity was an opportunity for our members to visit various Jeju areas outside of the English education city to pick up trash. A total of 20 frames were decorated using the air purifying plant, Scandiamos. Scandiamos is a plant that feeds on moisture and dust in the air and is not only used as a nature-friendly interior material but also has an air purification function, so we wanted to deliver it to the welfare center. We made a guidebook with information about plants and watering cycles so senior citizens could access plant information and grow plants easily without further investigation. We also visited the tree market and planted air-purifying plants in eco-friendly pots and delivered 20 air-purifying plants to Donggwang Hyo-do Village. In the future, Supia will continuously promote environmental preservation in Jeju and ecofriendly hobbies to others at the time when it is difficult to go out due to COVID-19. “
