IBDP INSPIRATIONAL HUMANS POSTERS SPORTS TRYOUTS MEET THE TEACHER

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju It is very pleasing to see all our NLCS Jeju community back to life with students fully engaged in their learning, our many societies and activities getting underway and student leadership emerging and playing a role in the co-curriculum of many areas of the school. As always there are many opportunities for students, both longstanding and new to contribute to this and the life of the school in general. Our long established houses are one example with meetings, hustings and elections last Friday for new house captains and then the excitement of house competition on Monday. Boarders have been active in their boarding homes and there has been a very positive response to the changes. The decoration and organisation of these boarding homes along with the community spirit already being engendered is certainly helping our new boarders to settle in quickly. The new programmes of academic support for borders have certainly been widely appreciated by old and new students, and they are benefitting from this in their studies. We will be announcing to our community very soon our plans for the celebration of the opening of North London Collegiate School Jeju ten years ago which falls during Chuseok. Although we will be unable to welcome alumni, parents and governors to the celebrations in person, we will engage with everyone in school and beyond in other ways to celebrate this momentous occasion in the week returning from Chuseok.

In the meantime I ask for your cooperation in ensuring our community remains safe during this pandemic: • There should be no visits to the mainland other than for essential medical care or other approved activities. If this becomes necessary then approval must be sought and it is strongly recommended that the person has a COVID test on return at the airport and will not be allowed back into school until receipt of this. This is the case for day and boarders alike, as well as all visitors including parents. • In the meantime please follow all precautionary measures laid down by the Government and also by NLCS Jeju so we can keep our community safe and healthy. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

IBDP INSPIRATIONAL HUMANS POSTERS Thank you to IBDP Coordinator, Justine Oliver for these brilliant posters. As part of their induction programme our new teachers had intensive sessions on each part of our academic and pastoral offering. The IBDP session discussed the Learner Profiles and qualities of the IB learner. New teachers chose some of their favourite qualities and linked them to inspirational humans. We LOVE some of these choices and are sharing a small selection. Who is your Inspirational Human?

SUMMER RENOVATIONS

MEET OUR TEACHERS - CAROLINE SANNEGADU Our finest resource at NLCS Jeju is our teachers. Every week we will introduce you to some of our teachers. What brought them to Jeju? What do they love about teaching? What are their passions. We start this week with Caroline Sannegadu who teaches English in the Senior School and whose love for her subject shines through as you talk to her about reading, writing, debate. Caroline has always been a traveller - she was born and studied in Junior School in Germany before returning to the UK for Senior School before a degree in English and German. She was attracted to English partly because of her love of reading. She says “Books teach us so much. They transport you from your sofa to so many different places. This summer I’ve spent time in Mexico without leaving Jeju!” Caroline, her husband Jason and their children Albie and Oscar love life on Jeju. Caroline loves the great outdoors and swims, walks, cycles regularly. She was amazed at the students she found here at NLCS Jeju - and continues to be amazed! “They are so keen, so engaged. The discussions in my IB classes are just incredible. This week we had a wonderful thought provoking debate around gender and race inspired by the Dove Real Women ad campaign. The students weren’t learning through me - they were learning through themselves, through each other. I didn’t want the class to end!” Caroline recommends reading as much and as widely as possible. Some of her favourites are The Reader by Bernard Schlink “A beautiful story, translated from the German, of generational guilt set around the Holocaust.” American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins “ A woman and her son try and escape a Mexican drug cartel and find safety in the US.” On Green Dolphin Street by Sebastian Faulks “His characters are always beautifully portrayed and he is so good at the female perspective.” If I had Your Face by Frances Cha “Superb insight into the Korean beauty ideal and the life of young women in Korea today”

SPORTS TRYOUTS This is an important week on the sporting calendar as we prepare for the start of the next CCA and Bryant block. The tryouts and trials have been taking place for many different sports and teams across Junior and Senior Schools. Students played volleyball, netball, football among other sports - and took to the pool to display their sporting prowess. Once the squads are formed they will train together regularly - and we very much hope that we will have some inter GEC/Korea tournaments very soon for them to shine!

SUPER STUDENTS We don’t have space in our newsletters to do justice to every story so here are a small selection of the activities of our students over the holidays. Minseo Cha - now in Year 13 - is a Jeju Student Diplomat and the programme has been ongoing this summer. She tells us “During the last months, we have had four lecture-based sessions about worldwide issues/ global citizenship, Africa, the Jeju 4.3 Incident, and the life of diplomats on Saturday mornings. It was a meaningful experience getting to know other student diplomats from local Jeju high schools and listening to lectures from professionals in each field. Since one of our major roles is to help organise and run the Jeju International Youth Forum, we have divided ourselves into three different committees. After a selection process and voting, I was selected as the official event committee and the host/MC for the opening ceremony with another student. It is an honour to be emceeing the opening ceremony and I am very excited to take the role!”

Meanwhile in the Junior School Leo (Ajin) Oh has also been very busy over the summer. He won the grand prize at the Korea Mathematics Competition with the top 1% score in the country and the overall first place in Jeju Island in third grade (Year 4). Leo received a medal and certificate and is committed to study even harder for Maths!

GARAGE SALE DONATION We try to take care as a School and not to throw away anything which can be reused. In term time, Ms Vivienne Brooks in the Junior School and Darangswi works with the Eco Committee on minimising food waste and coordinating many other initiatives such as the wonderful student designed House eco masks. In her Summer holidays she is equally busy - coordinating a Garage Sale for existing and new staff. She ensures that nothing goes to waste and raises money for a good cause at the same time. This year donations raised totalled 570,000 KRW which has been donated to the Hallim Dog Shelter. Thank you to all our teachers - past and present - who donated goods, time and money. Thank you very much!

ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAMME We announced last term that we would be starting a new Academic Support Programme in our boarding homes. The sessions take place in Prep time and mean that every Home has a resident expert teacher in each evening. Our aim is to support our students from our youngest boarders in Darangswi to our more independent students in the Halla Homes where needed with specific subject coaching and advice. Thank you to all our teachers who have made themselves available to ensure the success of this initiative. We’ll bring you more news as the term goes on.

TUTOR PICS! It’s our aim every year to feature every single student in the newsletter. We start with a lovely group of Year 10 students - Ms Heydinger’s Tutor Group. Hello 10B! Whose Senior School class will be next?

TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY Our TenYear Anniversary is fast approaching. Our School held its official Opening Ceremony on September 30 2011 and we will be celebrating this day. Were you there? Do you have memories of our first few weeks of NLCS Jeju? Please let us know if you have stories and visuals to share! We want to hear from you - whether you are a student, teacher, parent, alumni. Tell us how it feels to be one of our founders!
