WE ARE TEN! ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY STUDENT MEMORIES WELLBEING

10

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju I hope that we have all had a wonderful Chuseok holiday with family and friends. NLCS Jeju has begun again with a plethora of events where we can communicate with our community. This week it was a pleasure to host our Parent Academies in Junior and Senior School as well as a Year 9 Information Session. As you know we are still restricting visitors on site but we are very happy to still be able to run the events virtually and hope you find them valuable. As well as a purposeful week of lessons, societies, and CCAs, we have Bryant to look forward to this Saturday. Above all, this week has been an opportunity to look back to our beginnings ten years ago as well as forward to the next 10 years. It has been wonderful to celebrate with our current and previous NLCS Jeju communities 10 years of North London Collegiate School Jeju. We thank everyone for their contributions over the last ten years and greatly look forward to the next ten years of this remarkable school. Please do view our celebrations which are there for all to see. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

OUR TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY This is a very special week in the history of NLCS Jeju. We are now ten years old! As the founding GEC school we broke a lot of new ground and we are very proud of the students who have made the School what it is today. On Thursday we held a ceremony to celebrate the past, present and future of our School. We listened to messages from many key members of our community including • Past Principal - Paul Friend (now Principal of NLCS Singapore) • Past teacher and current NLCS Dubai Principal - Jamie Monaghan • Bruce Son, JEINS CEO • His Excellency, Mr Simon Smith - UK Ambassador to Korea • Ms Helen Stone OBE - Chair of the Governing Body • Sarah Clark - Head of NLCS London • Gwen Byrom - NLCS International • The ONLJ Committee - our esteemed alumni

Thank you to our musicians and dancers who really made the ceremony special. Please enjoy this selection of images from the day itself. We’d love to hear your memories of NLCS Jeju - however long you have been here. These events are only possible with a huge amount of hard work by a lot of people. OUR HISTORY NLCS Jeju opened on September 26 2011 and the Opening Ceremony was held on September 30 2011. The School was the first international school conceived by NLCS International and we follow the ethos of NLCS UK which was founded in London in 1850 by Frances Mary Buss. We celebrate this every Founders Day in March and it was wonderful to have a reminder of our history and values on Thursday in many of the speeches including those of our Principal - Lynne Oldfield and our Chair of Governing Body - Helen Stone OBE.

STUDENT MEMORIES My 10 Years at NLCS Jeju - Sharing My Memories With You Nick (Sung Hyun) Oh (Class of 2022)

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Here is a picture of me on the first day of school as a Year 3 student (Sept 26 2011). During the first few weeks of school,Year 2 students and Year 3 students were taught by Mrs Tamlyn in the same class. We were kept together because there were only six students in Year 3 at the time. I am the student in front of Mrs. Tamlyn, looking back and engaging in a chat with someone else. I was obviously eager to play with all my classmates! My first year of school will definitely remain as one of the most fortunate years of my life because I met Reuben and Archie. With them, I spent most of my childhood riding bikes, surfing, and playing.

A picture of our Yr 2 / 3 class on the witch’s hat (notorious for hurting many students!)

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Pictures from Yr 4. Professor Bodybits (Mr Smithson) showing us different pig organs. Had so much fun, but I can still sense the odour…

Junior School Swimming House Competition. I am almost certain Geomun was the best house then ??!! (still probably is, and will be the best house forever!)

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Yr 6 Hyeopjae Beach Trip. Played volleyball, Cops and Robbers, built sandcastles, or just chilled swimming in the refreshing waters, all together as a year group!

Yr 6 UK Trip. Before graduating Junior School, our Yr 6 teachers took us on a trip to the UK. We made so many great memories as a year group travelling all round London.

The two pictures above are from the Canada Mountain Biking Trip with Mr. Evans (My Yr 9 Science Teacher. I thought he was a strict teacher back then, but I realised that he had to be so strict to take so many students on so many school trips each year. Now, I know how much effort he has put in to provide us with numerous travelling opportunities.) and Mr. Marks (My Yr 9 Drama Teacher. He was probably the most passionate Drama teacher on earth. Simply observing his passion for teaching motivated all of us to become passionate in whatever we do - truly an influential teacher).

I tried to find pictures from the Canada trip with my friends or me in it, but I couldn’t. I guess the people around me weren’t attractive enough to lure my attention away from the jawdropping British Columbia scenery. With the fresh green air, crystal clear skies, and dazzling landscapes, Canada, especially BC, is certainly a place I will visit again.

A picture from Mr.Youell’s IGCSE Biology Class. We were the best biology class in NLCS Jeju (No bias). Reflecting back on my ten years as an NLCS Jeju student, I believe it was our school’s closeknit community culture fostered by school trips and house competitions that genuinely allowed me to make many close friends and teachers at this place. I don’t know anywhere else in the world where there are so many friends and teachers to rely on during times of hardship. It’s quite hard to nail down what exactly about NLCS Jeju makes it such a supportive environment (it is probably a mix of many aspects like student culture, school traditions, and more), but whatever that is, I sincerely hope it will remain an integral part of NLCS Jeju permanently - because after all, it is the people and the memories we make with them that stays with us forever.

MULCHAT FIRST EVER WEEKEND Thank you to community member, Mrs Rosie Waterson - ex HM of Mulchat who shared this lovely picture of the first Mulchat residents in only their first week!

NORO MEMORY BOOKS How lovely are these Memory Pages from 2012 in Noro. The students recorded their first thoughts and memories with such honesty! Students - did you feel this way on your first day? Alumni - are any of these you? How did it all work out?

SUPER STUDENTS

North London Collegiate School Jeju

Taehwan Lee - Architecture Society We have exciting news of a wonderful new society led by Taehwan Lee in Year 12. This is particularly exciting as many of our recent alumni and our current students are interested in pursuing a career in architecture and related fields. The society is The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) at NLCS. Founded by Taehwan Lee and first proposed to Ms Sharon Kennington and Mr Neil Tamlyn in May, Taehwan spent the past summer preparing an application on behalf of NLCS Jeju. The application was accepted, and allowed him to form the first high school chapter of AIAS in Asia, and the first-ever chapter in Korea, which is an amazing accomplishment. The AIAS is an independent, nonprofit, student-run organisation dedicated to providing programmes, information, education, and resources on issues related to architecture. The AIAS aims to advance leadership, design, and service among students interested in architectural education, training, and practice. Furthermore, it offers resources and opportunities to enrich the spirit of collaboration and advancement of the art and science of architecture through training and activities.

It is a platform which opens up opportunities to get in contact with professional architects in the field. Ms Kennington says “this is an exciting new project for our school and will truly enrich the experiences and learning of our students wanting to progress on to architecture, both Mr Tamlyn and I are very excited and proud of Taehwan and feel AIAS has the potential to grow over the coming years”. Students who are passionate about issues and fields relating to architecture and architectural design will be the founding members of AIAS NLCS’s first-ever journey. Taehwan concludes “We are planning to make a real impact in both our school and the outside community by making schemes and implementing real-life projects that will positively influence the greater community.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY First School teachers, Jenna Hall and Melissa Woo believe passionately in the value of play for our children. Here they explain why.

Why Play? With the world constantly changing and evolving, and becoming more competitive for future generations, it is important that we pause, reflect and ensure that we are placing emphasis on the right educational values. As Diane Ackerman said, “Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning.” Play is one of the most magical components of childhood, and yet we often forget that this is exactly how children learn; how we are biologically hardwired. The benefits of play are well researched and have been discussed, documented and deliberated upon since the time of Plato. These benefits include • Increasing creativity and imagination • Dexterity • Physical strength (including both gross and fine motor skills) • Cognitive aptitudes, such as memory • Emotional well-being, such as stress relief • Language and communication skills • Problem solving • Social skills, such as turn taking and cooperation Dr Karyn Purvis, co-founder of The Institute of Child Development, has done research into play and brain development and found that “it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, unless it is done in play, in which case it only takes 10 to 20 repetitions.” Play is thus fundamental to learning, and research reiterates the benefits and authenticity of play in education. In Reception, a lot of importance is placed on striking the right balance between play and our rigorous curriculum. This is to ensure that we are allowing our students to play in such a way that they are learning, being challenged and stretched, and receiving all of the preskills they require in order to read, write, and understand how numbers and the world around them works. We spend a lot of time engaging with your children in play, modelling it for them and nurturing their curiosity. Therefore, our planning is dedicated to ensure that students learn within a play enhanced environment. “There is nothing more magical than a child who is so engaged in what they are doing that they have not yet realised that the something they could not yet do yesterday, they can today. This is why I love what I do; I love seeing that magic unfold!” (Jenna Hall)

“I have a lot of fond memories of play as a child. Imaginative play was my favourite. Looking back now as an adult, I can see that I was not just ‘playing’ but connecting, building relationships, learning and growing.” (Melissa Woo)

WELLBEING Thank you to SWAG for running an entertaining and thought provoking activity just before the Chuseok break. They asked us to make sure that we really see each other and all our qualities. Thank you to all students and teachers who took part in “See Me”. Teacher, Thom Carter Stead told us “As part of this year’s annual Bullying Awareness Week, students and staff took part in the See Me campaign. Created by the Stomp Out Bullying organisation from the U.S., this campaign asks us to share something important about ourselves that others might not normally see from our outer appearance. As you can see from the photos, students and staff enjoyed taking the opportunity to share something of themselves with our community! If you would also like to contribute to this campaign that’s great! Please follow this link to print out your own sign and share something you would like others to see.”

SERVICE NLCS Jeju Architecture Society Thank you to the NLCS Jeju Architecture Society who have been in constant contact with Habitat for Humanity Korea for the past three years. They want to update the community on their recent work. “Last July, members of the Society met at Habitat Korea’s HQ to participate in a cabinet donation activity. The cabinet donation activity involved gifting the cabinets made by donors in a local daycare centre sponsored by Habitat. After a detailed lecture about the Habitat organization, members assembled the storage box. Members registered themselves as individual Habitat sponsors, making the experience even more meaningful. Finally - members donated KRW 527,750 of the funds raised last Mufti Day to Habitat for Humanity Korea, in the name of NLCS Jeju. The NLCS Architecture Society hopes that Habitat for Humanity Korea and NLCS Jeju maintain strong ties in the future. “

DUKE OF EDINBURGH A message from Mr Nicholas Chaddock - our Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme coordinator. He sums up the amazing performance of our students and the benefit of entering and completing these Awards! “Congratulations to all of our Duke of Edinburgh International Award participants for completing the programme and receiving their registration, certificate and badge at the end of last year! Many will continue their journey this year as we have more students doing Bronze and Silver than we have ever had before!

The answer is no. We have a 90% completion rate at NLCS, Jeju. The programme remains a challenge in terms of organisation, perseverance, bravery, fitness and strength of mind and body. That is why these students should be praised for their achievements.

A huge thank you to Mr. Machin, Mr. Scarlet, Ms. Eunjeong Jo, Ms. Donaldson, Mrs. Sommerville, Mr. Sommerville, Mr. Clarke and Mr. Coll - together with all the teachers and coaches who have acted as Assessors for our students. It really is a huge team effort to make a programme like the International Award successful. All three of our IA cohorts will travel to Chuja island (Covid levels permitting) this autumn to practice their camp craft skills and hike the coastline of this beautiful island that has recently opened a new section of Olle Trail. In Bryant Week 1 just before Chuseok, our new Bronze Year 10 students began their training with a Beep Test to help assess their fitness and set goals for the upcoming year. “

Village Is School Well done to the Village Is School team who were presented with their medals and certificates for the National Award for Service by Ms Lynne Oldfield. The organisers visited the School before Chuseok to make the presentation and we enjoyed hearing all the students talk about why the project is very important to them.

PSYCHOLOGY ENRICHMENT WEEK

North London Collegiate School Jeju

A lovely message from Ms Jessica Laughton, Head of Psychology, reflecting on a very successful Psychology Enrichment Week “The engagement that students show for Psychology at NLCS Jeju always impresses us but this week it has blown us away! Budding Psychologists have taken part in real neuropsychological research for Goldsmiths University; students across the senior school have been ogling optical illusions and even suggesting their own illusions they have come across; and psychology societies have also been attracting, observing and enlightening students throughout the week too. Year 8 made an excellent audience for the Enrichment Lecture, learning about the importance of processing information at a deeper level to make it more likely they will remember information. Very handy learning tips that teachers would love to hear about students using - show off that Love of Learning! Huge thank you to all teachers and students involved in making this week a success! “
