DIVERSITY WEEK SPECIAL ART ENRICHMENT WEEK STRANGER THINGS OLLE WALKS

11

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju This year has seen the second year of an important week-long event in our calendar - Diversity Week. We want to be united under the theme for this year of Many Cultures One Race. This event is largely student-led by the Cultural Awareness Committee and their Link Teacher, as you will see below and we praise their endeavours in putting on this week. As you will see below we have had many visitors this week who have all contributed to helping us develop our understanding and practice in line with two particular school aims • To foster a caring and respectful community characterised by excellent relationships between staff and students and between the students themselves, of whatever age, culture and background. • To develop an outward looking, internationally minded, community of young people who have a clear understanding of the value of commitment and service to others I am delighted too by our students’ commitment to service and their awareness of global and environmental issues. We have many societies who work for example on environmental issues. It is delightful to see our Year 1 students developing responsibility for this and for ‘saving the planet’ with their protests against plastic waste and other environmental messages. These ideas and beliefs were delivered so passionately and with great enthusiasm around the Tower before the Half Term Break. I remain impressed by the variety of service activities our students are involved in and their commitment to this often over a number of years. Please do support their latest initiatives. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

DIVERSITY WEEK SPECIAL This week has been a very special week as we have celebrated Diversity in all its forms throughout the whole School. The Senior School was decked out in bunting and home to over 30 country boards which students had a chance to vote for! On Monday we had some amazing visitors who demonstrated African drumming and dancing.Tuesday saw the big Senior School Assembly where we had a presentation from Ms Kendra Song on being American and Korean, identity, friendship and her personal history. She was followed by Ms Anna Connolly, Political Secretary at the Embassy of the UK. She talked about the vital importance of diversity, of equality, of inclusion. Her speech touched on politics and social issues in both the UK and Korea and stressed that we are all equal and should be treated as such - and heard as such - whatever our gender, age, race, heritage, language, sexuality. The week has been wonderful - featuring songs, dances, workshops, quizzes and more. We hope that everyone has learned something new about themselves and each other. We urge you all to take part next year and contribute your own stories.

Fred Lee - Chair of the Cultural Awareness Committee tells us “Thank you all so much! The CAC has come so far and every student has really played their part. We started with just a few members and we have really grown. We have all worked hard and we have benefited from the help of so many. I am grateful to everyone who has been so passionate about this week and all it stands for.” Katrina Daniels Samasa - Link Teacher and Organiser with the Cultural Awareness Committee says “I would like to personally thank all of the students, staff, and parents who have supported Diversity Week. It is important as we move forward to make a commitment to mutual understanding and respect of one another’s differences while we reinforce the goal of international mindedness and create an environment where everyone feels welcome. Thank you and I look forward to a bigger and better Diversity Week next year!” Ms Sukyung (Liz) Kim - Junior School Diversity Week Coordinator “Diversity Week was a perfect way for our students to enjoy learning about many cultures in speeches, music, dancing, display tours, and foods. Especially this year, it is even more meaningful as Junior School and Senior School Cultural Awareness Committee members worked together and that inspired us to believe ‘Many cultures, one school(race)’.

The CAC and Senior School Society members made a huge commitment to the JS children who also learned cultural awareness and leadership from them. Personally I would like students to apply what they learned, experienced, thought during this week to their real life and hope it is a great asset for their futures. Thank you everyone for collaborating and making such a wonderful Diversity Week. “

JS Celebrations We thank Ms Sukyung Liz Kim for coordinating efforts so splendidly in the Junior School. She ensured that the Junior School students understood the true meaning of the week no matter what their age. They produced a wonderful video HERE. Please take a look and let’s all act on the advice!

JENAM ORPHANAGE CHRISTMAS PROJECT We are very happy to share that the Jenam Orphanage Christmas Project December 2021 Be Santa Claus for the Children is now in its SIXTH year! Please read the letter from our student team and please take part! Dear NLCS Jeju Community Jenam Orphanage is a 30-minute drive from our school, and provides support for children unable to be raised by their parents or relatives.Twelve NLCS Jeju students carry out service work at Jenam as their Bryant. Before the Pandemic, we visited the Jenam Orphanage and had English and Maths lessons, Storytelling making, art, field trips to museums and Oreum hiking, etc. We also donated our school’s old iMacs for ONLINE learning and we have been providing English and Maths teaching for a year. At Jenam there are fifty children, ranging from 2 to 19 years old. Twelve of these children take part in our Bryant activities as we have devised a 1:1 mentoring programme with them. To celebrate the festive season, we are planning to organise a gift donation project for all 50 children at the orphanage. Through this opportunity, the NLCS Jeju community will be able to share some meaningful joy to those around us. For the parents, students, and staff that sign up to participate, we will allocate you 1:1 with a child for you to give a gift to. In order to really present the children with a gift of their liking, we have already collated a list of the gifts that they would like to receive. Most of these are items that the children are immediately in need of, such as winter clothes, lotion, or school backpacks. Participation in this project can take the form of either directly purchasing a gift, or donating the monetary equivalent. You may also participate in this project by a pure monetary donation (up to 50,000 KRW) to the school’s donation bank account (see details below). If you prefer to donate by cash, please give the money directly to Mr. Im, in the Beyond the Curriculum office, who will keep a written record. School Donation Account Bank: NH Bank Account Name: NLCS Jeju Account Number: 301 0148 6552 71 Deposit code: JNOxxxxxx (xxxxxx is the student’s Admission Number e.g. JNO150032) If you would like to take part in the gift donation project, please fill this form in. SAVE OUR EARTH YEAR ONE DEMONSTRATION You’re never too young to speak up for what you believe in - as our Year 1 students proved on November 4! As part of their persuasive writing lessons and inspired by older children like Greta Thunberg they marched around School in favour of saving our earth - specifically the coral reef. They erected a stage and spoke to the gathered crowds beneath the tower. Their protest speeches were passionate, engaging and convincing. Principal - Ms Oldfield came to watch and to congratulate the students. Well done to all our students - an amazing demonstration! And thank you to Ms Carolyn Moran, Ms Hannah Goddard and Ms Louise Collier for encouraging the students to stand up for their beliefs.Take a look at this amazing video created by our Designer, Mike Kim

ART ENRICHMENT WEEK Just before Half Term we all enjoyed a fabulous Art Enrichment Week - with lots to see and do. Sharon Kennington - Head of Art in the Senior School explains more “Art Enrichment Week saw a host of events both in and outside of class time. Students enjoyed creating a large collaborative wall painting with fluorescent paint over 3 lunchtime sessions. They watched Fine Art Films projected on a large scale, participated in relay drawing and experienced an exciting train installation which projected intermittent shadows. In class, students benefited from a range of lectures by society chairs, group projects and making exciting balloon sculptures based on Henry Moore. There were also three exhibitions • Year 7 Organic Form • IB preview • Photographic exhibition from the Photography Society. In addition postcards were given to all visitors who attended the activities. Another highlight of the week was an engaging lecture on The Principles of Design given by Mr Stephen Davidson.

The Art Department would like to give a special thanks to all of our societies • Digital Art Society • Architecture Society • Photography • AIAS Society for their contribution to the events which were enjoyed by all and a special thank you to the CPP, (The Creative Peoples Pod) chaired by student, Bomi Park, who worked tirelessly to coordinate the events.”

CREATIVE WRITING

Take a look at this creative writing by Jake Youn in Year 6. Wolf Began is an amazing piece of writing - just one example of our students’ creativity with words.

JUNIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY Many English books and other items in Korean have recently been received into the Junior School Library and cataloged by Mr. Nam, the Junior School Librarian. All these books are ready in Destiny Discover, the online library catalogue. We hope this will encourage our students to learn and discover different subjects, foster their love for reading and improve their English skills.

BOARDING ACTIVITIES Jeju Seafood Ramen Preparation - with Miri Kang Ms Miri Kang often runs weekend activities for our boarders and before the Half Term break she ran a Jeju Seafood ramen session. She says “ Our Year 10 boarders showed incredible engagement throughout the entire cooking process, which involved chopping onions, mincing garlic, stir-frying seafood and seasoning broth. The fresh-salty smell of the sea filled the Hyeopjae Kitchen with sizzling sounds and busy-bee movements of the 15 girls and boys. Their hard work paid off when the ramen soup was finally being served. The group of young chefs really enjoyed the fruits of their labours. “

OLLE WALKS Before the Half Term break our Year 7, 8 and 9 students each had a very special outing walking Olle Trail 14 - 1 as a group. They drew on all their energy and stamina as they took in forests, hills and meandering pathways. It was a wonderful way to be in nature, relax after a busy few weeks studying and to chat with friends. Thank you to AVP - Pastoral - Ms Kate Sommerville and the Heads of Year - Dr Maxton Karamalla, Adam McCue and Padraig Hogan and to all the Class Tutors. Well done everyone!
