STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY CHANGING LIVES
2014 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA OF GREATER NASHUA
CVO MESSAGE Denis Dancoes
The Y. So Much More. Welcome to the YMCA of Greater Nashua’s 127th Annual Meeting. Our Y serves and strengthens the Greater Nashua community – providing programs and services to young and old, alike. Today, through our three facilities: the Merrimack Branch, our 22 acre day camp at Camp Sargent and our newest branch in Nashua, our primary programs include: child care, health & wellness, aquatics, camping, youth sports, dance and the arts. Whether it is a parent having the peace of mind that their child will be in a safe and nurturing environment, or teaching healthy eating habits to propel kids to lead healthier lives through our impactful “Prescribe the Y” obesity prevention initiative, or providing connection through our successful “LIVESTRONG at the Y” program where cancer survivors come together in a supportive environment to focus on building their emotional and physical strength. We are for everyone…The Y is So Much More. The Y is your partner for helping, healing and strengthening the whole person. And in fact, the Y is the only organization in our community that is truly for everyone, regardless of financial ability. As part of our Y’s commitment to the community, every year the Y Cares Financial Assistance program awards many hundreds of thousands of dollars in both membership and program financial support. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Since the Y is a non-profit, mission based service organization, we rely on our community members and supporters to fund our Y Cares Financial Assistance program. Through our Annual Campaign, Golf Tournament and Annual Auction we raise funds necessary to continue providing these important programs and services to nearly 3,000 individuals that are in need. From our national YUSA organization’s Impact Report, “The Y believes that everyone deserves a chance to succeed - no matter their background or income - and we have learned that can happen only when we unite to nurture the best in all of us. That is why our cause is strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.” • YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Nurturing the potential of children and teens; • HEALTHY LIVING: Promoting healthy habits and well-being; • SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Fostering a sense of responsibility by giving back and providing support to our neighbors. As members of the Board of Directors, we have a special role in furthering the success of our Y to ensure that we can continue to provide the critical support our community needs. And as responsible stewards and advocates for the Y, we must share our Y stories with our community. Our staff and volunteers work day-in and day-out delivering Impact; and as a result, thousands of youth, adults and families receive the support, guidance and resources they need to become and stay healthy. We all can be proud of the good work our Y has delivered to Greater Nashua over the past 127 years. We have much to look forward to. And I trust that with your help, we will continue to make a significant positive impact in our community.
CEO UPDATE
Mike LaChance
For 127 years, our Y has had a tremendous impact on our community and this past year we continued to take it to a whole new level. We launched four new significant signature programs to improve the Greater Nashua region. In the first month of the year we kicked off our LIVESTRONG at the Y program to help individuals going through cancer treatment or post-treatment gain strength, improve balance, learn proper nutrition options and most importantly provide support for a positive outlook. Our medical partners have referred more than 100 individuals in this first year and the results have been tremendous. This program has created a large new community within the Y community with program participants giving back to the Y in so many ways to show their support.

Two new programs focused on the safety and protection of children were introduced this year. We actually served our national office as a pilot site for the YMCA Child Safety Program which put an even higher emphasis on risk management at our Y. We incorporated higher staff screening and training standards to go along with a review of policies and facility improvements to keep children safer. For members, the most visible change was the addition of a new safety wall and security door leading to the Merrimack child care center. Our second child protection program is the launching of a new community education program “Stewards of Children” to reduce and hopefully prevent child sexual abuse. Our Y took the lead to establish a statewide partnership with the Granite State Children’s Alliance to train staff in each of the Ys and Child Advocacy Centers in NH to facilitate trainings in their local communities. Our goal is to train 5% of the community’s adult population which will then provide the momentum to make a difference in our state. This summer we launched the fourth new signature program called Togetherhood. With a base of 20,000+ members our YMCA has a unique ability to have a tremendous impact to improve our community. This program utilizes Y members to identify projects and action items to improve Greater Nashua and then pull together Y members to volunteer their time to “Make it Happen.” Over the next year you will see more Togetherhood projects identified and being acted on. These are projects to improve our community and not specific to the Y, such as a river trail cleanup, painting the rooms of another not for profit, and so forth. Our partnerships in the region continue to grow for an even larger impact. As the leading agency in the Nashua Public Health Department’s Community Health Improvement Plan, our Y was able to secure funding to hire an Obesity Prevention Coordinator to serve our community in combating this epidemic. Our coordinator, Stacy Nelson has 30 local organizational partners working with her to influence local restaurant menus, school and child care nutrition and activities, workplace wellness and community wide education and active events. Our work with teens this past year has increased significantly primarily through three programs. Our Y-Achiever’s mentoring program in collaboration with Fidelity Investments is not only serving more than 35 teens, but is changing their outlook and opportunity to have a very successful future. The Teen Leaders Club is a leadership development program serving more than 70 teens making it the largest of any Y in New England. These teens are already making a difference through their service to your community. This year, through our partnership with the Merrimack School District, we hosted every seventh grader in Merrimack at Camp Sargent to work with our staff and their teachers on environmental education, team building and other skills in an outdoor environment. These same students will be returning in the spring to continue their work. With a few tremendous opportunities in front of us, our YMCA will make an even greater impact in your community in the next year and into the future. Thank you for your support to “Make it Happen.”

You not only positively affect a child’s development and future, but you make a lifelong friend and the growth and development is mutual. - Diana, mentor
All kids have great potential. At the Y, we work every day to help them set and achieve personal and educational goals. Thousands of children and teens build skills and confidence as they explore new interests and passions through the Y. Our dedication to today’s youth doesn’t stop once they surpass the age of our child care programs. We continue to help them grow into more well-rounded individuals through their teen years as our Y-Achievers and Leaders Club programs help set a clear vision for their future. The Y-Achievers program has been helping teens in YMCAs around the country for nearly 40 years. Nationally, the program strives to help students set and pursue higher education and career goals. Y-Achievers programs help teens raise their academic standards and interact with diverse professionals who serve as role models to inspire success.
Teens also engage in a variety of experiences to help them build confidence and improve their high school success. Leaders Club is one of the YMCA’s most intensive and comprehensive teen programs. Young people meet on a weekly basis in small groups, working closely with their peers and a counselor on skill and character-building activities, as well as planning and organizing club projects. This program provides club members with opportunities for leadership training, personal growth, service to others and social development. By connecting with adult advisors, teens have role models and mentors who can have a positive impact on their lives.

Y Achievers & Leaders are paving their way to a successful future
I started the LIVESTRONG at the Y in May of this year and met cancer warriors who were in various stages of their journey. Several were actively being treated with radiation and chemotherapy, and, despite these challenges, came to exercise two times a week for 12 weeks. When we shared our stories, I was in awe to meet people who had been told they had a 4 percent chance to survive their diagnosis, and yet they defied those odds and embraced life. At the end of 12 weeks, we were one—a family that continues to support each other. All of us achieved success in healing ourselves through this program— mentally, physically, and spiritually. - Kristy Donaghy, not pictured In photo: Christine Fischer and Melissa Collins.
With a mission centered on balance, the Y strives to be a leading voice on health and well-being for our community by providing resources and guidance so that all people, no matter what their circumstance, can achieve greater health and well-being in spirit, mind and body. At the Y, we believe the key to success is bringing a focus to prevention which encourages men, women and children to commit to healthy living not only in our facilities but in their daily lives.
day-to-day food choices. Prescribe the Y also focuses on family as the Y recognizes for children to be truly successful, healthy lifestyle behaviors must be adopted by everyone.
With a focus on the future of our youth, fighting childhood obesity has come to the forefront of the Y’s mission of prevention as 12.4% of New Hampshire youth are overweight or obese.
With further focus on helping people reclaim their health and well-being, the Y began offering LIVESTRONG at the Y, a research-based physical activity and well-being initiative that helps people affected by cancer reach their holistic health goals.
To help drive that percentage down and make a true impact, the Y continues its focus on Prescribe the Y. Prescribe the Y is a is a free youth wellness program for children ages 6 to 13 that have been referred by their pediatrician because they are at the ≼95th percentile BMI by age and sex, based on reference data. During this 12-week session, participants meet once a week to learn how being active can be fun and meet with a nutritionist to learn about making healthier
As part of LIVESTRONG at the Y, the Y engages cancer survivors through an approach that focuses on the whole person. Participants work with trained Y staff to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. In addition to physical benefits, the program also focuses on nutrition and emotional well-being of survivors by providing a supportive community environment where people affected by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

The YMCA truly serves all of the community. It’s a place for seniors to gather and stay fit. A place where families can all participate and benefit and a place where so many people in need can find a place to go and get better. But most of all it’s a place where kids learn and grow into better people. - John Callahan Board of Trustees Chair
The generosity of others is at the core of our existence. It is only through the support of our volunteers and donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve. We work to make sure every child, family and community has what they need to achieve their best. At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We are living this cause each and every day through programs such as Togetherhood. Togetherhood provides Y members with fun, convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors. Volunteers choose a project that they feel will bring about a meaningful change in the community. Togetherhood is also a great opportunity for members to meet new people and learn new skills. When members are involved with the Y, they are helping bring about lasting personal and social change to the community. We believe we have something special—a sense of community—and that everyone should have access to it, along with the programs and services that help us learn, grow and thrive.
With your help through our annual campaign, we were proud to share the Y with more than 3,000 children, seniors and families last year who otherwise might not have become part of our Y family. The Y’s annual campaign and its special events like the Charity Auction & Dinner, Triathlon and Golf Tournament raises funds each year to benefit the Y CARES Financial Assistance Program. Y CARES provides scholarships to local children and families in need so they can experience Y programs and services such as child care, before and after school care, day camp, dance & arts, sports, swimming, enrichment and more - regardless of their ability to pay. Over the past two years, the Y has provided more than $1 million dollars in financial assistance to more than 5,000 local children, adults and families. With your continued support we look forward to helping children, seniors and families grow and thrive for years to come.

ANNUAL HALL OF FAME As the YMCA has a strong history of serving the Greater Nashua community, we would like to recognize those who have embodied our mission and values. Each year, nominations for the Hall of Fame are made by Y staff, members, as well as individuals in the community. We focus on those who have dedicated their time and talent to fulfilling the mission of the YMCA. The Hall of Fame committee has chosen inductees that truly represent the spirit of the Y and have provided opportunities for lifelong personal growth and the development of a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Ernest Artel Blood
Earnest Artel Blood was born in Manchester, NH, in 1872 and at the young age of 26 he was hired to be the Physical Director and work with young men at the Nashua YMCA (that was 1896). One of his duties was teaching and coaching basketball, little did anyone know of the impact he would leave on the game and the young men he was coaching. Less than five years after the game was invented Ernest was working at our local Y and coaching basketball. This was his first coaching job and over the next two years he would compile a remarkable record of 54 wins and only 2 losses. From Nashua he went on to coach YMCA teams in Somerville, Springfield, Rutland, St Johnsbury, Pawtucket and Brooklyn. In 1906, he began coaching high school teams in Potsdam, NY, where he won several championships. In 1915 he became a PE instructor at Passaic High School and became their basketball coach. In seven years coaching at Passaic his record was 188 and 1 and 159 games won consecutively were unmatched at any level. This is considered the longest unbeaten streak in the US, and they also won seven state championships.
Roland W. Ure
Roland was born in Oakland, California, on March 26, 1898. He began his Y career working part-time while a student at the University of California in Oakland and then continued in Brooklyn while completing his graduate studies at Columbia and was actually the Director of Camp Brooklyn for a few years. Following his work in NY he served YMCAs in Honolulu, South Bend, Indiana; and Worcester. Roland developed Hawaii’s first YMCA resident camp and then in Worcester where he served as the Director of Boys Work for 15 years. Roland came to Nashua in August 1947 as the General Secretary (CEO). During his tenure as General Secretary, Roland and his team started the Church Basketball league which is still in existence today, expanded the Camp Sargent property with the acquisition of four lots next to Ingram Road, and converted the camp from a resident camp to a day camp. One of the biggest accomplishments of his career was conducting the capital campaign which led to the building of the Nashua Y on Prospect Street This state of the art Y served tens of thousands of local residents of our community for 47 years. He served as General Secretary from 1947 till his retirement in 1963. He passed away in 1985 at the age of 86 in Claremont, CA.
