STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY CHANGING LIVES 2015 IMPACT REPORT YMCA OF GREATER NASHUA

A LETTER FROM THE CVO AND CEO Dear Friends, For 128 years, the YMCA of Greater Nashua has been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive. We don’t just strengthen individuals, we strengthen entire communities. We are a 501 c (3) non-profit charity dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Everyone is welcome; our goal is to not turn anyone away due to the inability to pay. Numbers and statistics are but one method used to quantify our success, but it is only part of the real picture. Our true success lies in the testimonies of the thousands of people we serve, resulting in changed, enhanced and saved lives. We hope that you will enjoy the touching stories of impact shared within this report. We thank our hardworking and dedicated volunteers and staff for finding innovative approaches to improve the health of our community, help children succeed and offer meaningful ways for our members and program participants to grow and serve others. This innovation is reflected in the many major accomplishments we have seen over the past year, including:

EARLY EDUCATION CENTER

We opened four new classrooms in the Early Education Center at the Merrimack Branch and are now able to care for children as young as 6-weeks-old. From opening day on August 31, we have been filled to capacity, with a waiting list. At the Y, babies develop trust and security, preschoolers experience early literacy and learn about their world and school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do their homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.

YMCA CAMP SPAULDING

Summer 2015 saw a new addition to our summer offerings with the opening of YMCA Camp Spaulding, in partnership with Child & Family Services and the Concord Family YMCA. Our joint venture among three organizations, (with a combined 328 years of service to children in our communities) allowed kids to have a traditional camp experience on the shores of the Contoocook River . The resident camp experience is rooted in helping campers grow into confident, independent, civically minded members. Campers learn to become leaders for the causes they believe in, to live sustainably, to care for our shared environment, and to live cooperatively in a culturally diverse community.

SUPERHERO TRAINING ACADEMY

We graduated our first class from the YMCA Superhero Training Academy at the Dr. H. O. Smith elementary school in Hudson. This new program emerged out of discussions with the Hudson School District in Fall 2014 regarding many first graders having low attendance, school anxiety, low self-esteem, being bullied, acting out or not being engaged in the classroom. Y staff developed Superhero Training Academy to teach the kids about being strong in their mind and body, showing great character and leadership and developing their own superhero persona who works to improve their school community. In essence, being a Superhero in their family, school and community.

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

In January, we launched the Diabetes Prevention Program, which helps overweight adults at risk for type 2 diabetes take steps to improve their health. The evidence-based program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group, facilitated by a trained YMCA Lifestyle Coach, to achieve the program goals of reducing individual weight by 7% and building up to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week to reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA

The YMCA of Greater Nashua is in its third year offering LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being initiative that helps people affected by cancer reach their holistic health goals. The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program is available to cancer survivors and their families in the Greater Nashua community. Participants work with trained Y staff to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. In addition to physical benefits, the program also focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors by providing a supportive community environment where people affected by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. To date, more than 200 people have enrolled in the program.

PRESCRIBE THE Y

17% of New Hampshire youth are overweight or obese. We’re changing that! In 2014, we helped pave the way to a healthier future for 96 youth in our community. And last year, we engaged 138 children in the program. Local pediatricians refer a patient and his or her family to the Nashua Y for the twelve week program. The child must be between the ages of six and thirteen years old. The kids meet every week and focus on nutrition or exercise. There are also sessions for the whole family on parenting and family wellness strategies, as well as healthy cooking and learning how to read nutrition labels at the grocery store.

SUMMER LEARNING LOSS PREVENTION

The YMCA of Greater Nashua was selected as the first Y in New Hampshire to introduce the Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program . We chose to host the pilot program at Ledge Street Elementary School. National research has shown that low-income students lose 2.5 to 3 months of learning EACH summer and this is cumulative over their school career! By working extensively with Ledge Street Elementary first and second graders that are struggling with their reading skills, the Y’s national evidence based Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program enabled these kids to begin the next school year ahead, instead of falling further behind. The reading program also includes high quality enrichment activities that intentionally align with literacy lessons including Art, Music, Character Development, Physical Activity, Field Trips and Nutrition Education. Family engagement is also part of the model for success. Parents pledge to read to their children, attend an orientation and workshops to learn about the program and how to support their child.

BRANCH RENOVATIONS

As you have seen from architectural renderings in the Branches, our long range strategic plan calls for an addition at the Nashua Branch and renovations to the Merrimack Branch. The facility usage at the Nashua Y exceeded our expectations. We have always planned to do a phase two and add a second floor expansion in Nashua. We’re just planning to do it sooner. You probably have seen that renovations at the Merrimack Branch are underway. The new staircase was installed in the spring and the old staircase is being converted into office space and much needed storage space. The Welcome Center and lobby will be completed this year, and will be a much friendlier and brighter space. Further updates for the Merrimack facility are on the list as well and we currently raising money to make those happen. Once the money is raised, we will be continuing our long-term renovation plans. Let us know if you would like to be part of helping us raise funds for these projects.

The true genius of the Y is the partnership between our volunteers, staff, donors and our community collaborations. Together, we are a powerful group of men, women and children committed to bringing lasting personal change to our communities. We extend our sincere thank you to all who bring the mission of the Y to life every day. We look forward to a very exciting year ahead! Sincerely, Michael Rubino Mike LaChance Chief Volunteer Officer Chief Executive Officer

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

“I learned really how independent and outgoing Kaitlyn is. The experience of staying overnight was definitely a confidence builder for her. I could see that. She used to be a little shy staying over for an overnight but now she really has a lot of confidence. She wants to go back to camp even longer next summer.” Tim Vadney and his family have been long time members of the Y of Greater Nashua since 2004. They started utilizing the Y when their two children, TJ and Kaitlyn, were born for childcare. From there the kids were involved in just about every activity including swim lessons, afterschool care and summer camp at Camp Sargent. Today, their oldest child, TJ, plays basketball while their youngest, Kaitlin, participates in dance and the inMotion dance team 4-5 days a week. This past summer, Kaitlin expanded her YMCA experience when she enrolled in the Y’s new overnight camp, YMCA Camp Spaulding, located in Penacook, NH. After spending two weeks at camp, Caitlin has a number of great memories she taken home with her along with the excitement to go back to camp next summer.

empowers girls by teaching them woodworking skills and how to safely use power tools to build with a team of girls. This program helps them discover their inner power tools of strength and courage, tools that can help them tackle any challenging situations. “What I want other kids to know is that is really fun at camp. I want to go back for three weeks next year,” Kaitlyn said. Vadney said the biggest takeaway as a camp parent is that Camp Spaulding is a really great and safe environment. The kids can meet other kids that they wouldn’t normally meet in school. They can also enjoy being away but not too far from home. It is truly a great experience for any child and overnight camp really helps children build confidence.

“My favorite camp memory was the night of our camp fire where we got to have s’mores and participating in the talent show. The girls in my cabin performed and we sang and danced to a song in front of the entire camp. I have made many new friends and I got their contact info the last day so I can keep in touch with them throughout the year.”

“I learned really how independent and outgoing Kaitlyn is. The experience of staying overnight was definitely a confidence builder for her. I could see that. She used to be a little shy staying over for an overnight but now she really has a lot of confidence. She wants to go back to camp even longer next summer,” he said.

Kaitlyn also had the opportunity to participate in the Girls at Work program which is a regional program that

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

“I’m a stage four kidney cancer survivor. I didn’t want to get something like Diabetes after everything I went through.” “You don’t want to get Diabetes, if you can prevent it. Baby Boomers are living longer and having an expanded life is a reason to stay healthy,” said Greater Nashua YMCA member Dave deBronkart. After his doctor diagnosed him as being at-risk for Type 1 diabetes, deBronkart enrolled himself in the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program in November 2014. “I’m a stage four kidney cancer survivor. I didn’t want to get something like Diabetes after everything I went through,” he said. In a matter of 6 months in the program, he found success as he saw an increase in strength and stamina and he also lost 30 pounds and dropped two clothing sizes.

138 participants reclaimed their health in LIVESTRONG at the Y

“Health is social. There is a big difference when you work with others. Information alone doesn’t change behavior. I bought a heart rate monitor and Garmin wristband to track my activity. Gadgets don’t get it done either. It’s a combination that brings a strong change.” DeBronkart cites that the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program isn’t overly complicated. The information is easy to understand and follow. He also said that you don’t need to make miserable sacrifices to be successful. His wife is also very supportive and actively involved with his life changes, which included an increase in physical activity and being more aware of the food that they ate. “The program took a lot of work, but wasn’t really hard to do. I’ve never been athletic or a jock. I didn’t need to turn my life inside out to accomplish what I did.” - Dave deBronkart YMCA Member and DPP Participant

Dot McCaffrey

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

“It truly is the best program in the world as far as I’m concerned.” In 2012, the Y launched a brand new initiative focused on cancer survivors. Livestrong at the YMCA is a research-based physical activity and well-being program that helps people affected by cancer reach their holistic health goals. One of the very first participants in this program was Dot McCaffrey. McCaffrey was attending physical therapy at St. Joseph’s Hospital when her physical therapist got word about the program and had suggested Dot give it a try. McCaffrey was impressed with the attitude of the staff and their dedication to the program. The trainers not only had the exercise knowledge but also they really knew the population they were working with. They knew how to customize the program to include participant limitations as well. McCaffrey felt the program isn’t built for 12 people it a program for 12 individuals. “During the program we are not thinking about the cancer. We are thinking about our health and getting stronger, getting better. It is about getting your sense of humor back and getting feel like you did before. You get attached. It truly is the best program in the world as far as I’m concerned,” she said. About a year ago the program hit capacity and the trainers wanted to make sure people had the one-on-one contact and so one of the trainers reached out to McCaffrey to see if she would be interested in volunteering and she jumped right on it. To date she has worked with 4 more groups.

“I knew I wasn’t a trainer but I was there to support the participants. Many of us have had ups and downs whether it is a fear that the cancer has returned or another medical issue. The difference is that we are here to support each other and see each other through.,” she said. She credits her time volunteering with Livestrong as a way she has stayed positive through her own medical issues. To her it’s a job to be there and support the participants and she wouldn’t miss for everything. “I want to be an example and show people you can get through these times. Volunteering has kept my attitude very positive. It’s feeling like things are going in the right direction and that I am a part of something very important, “ McCaffrey said. “I volunteered because I got so much from the program myself. It is the best thing in my life besides my friends and family. With Livestrong it’s the combination that I feel like I’m giving something and supporting people but I get so much more because it’s done so much and means so much for me. I think the best volunteer experience is that not only feel like you are giving but fulfills you in some way and I feel like this fulfills me in every way possible. To see the difference made in the participant’s lives is life-alerting.” - Dot McCaffrey YMCA Member and Livestrong Volunteer
