SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER YMCA CAMP SPAULDING 2016 Resident Camp Guide

WELCOME

Since 1921, Camp Spaulding has helped campers from all types of backgrounds enjoy the benefits of a traditional camp experience. YMCA Camp Spaulding helps to prepare young people for their future by engaging them in developing life skills. They learn to become leaders for the causes they believe in, to live sustainably, to care for our shared environment, and to live cooperatively in a culturally diverse community. Resident camp nurtures the potential of youth and creates a sense of community among campers of all ages through a wide variety of programs.

Caring – Looking out for each other Honesty – Be true to you. Be true to others Respect – To be shown to everyone Responsibility – Good stewardship to the world Purpose – A reason for everything we do Spirit – Uniting new and old in a higher meaning

“My girls talk about how much fun they had making up dances and playing capture the flag. They are thrilled to have met new nice friends and they are begging me to send them back to Camp Spaulding. - Camp Parent

THE RESIDENT CAMP EXPERIENCE Two Week Traditional Camp (Ages 8-15) The resident camping experience is one of the strongest programs of the YMCA today. Led by adult role models, campers will live, eat, play, and grow with their peers. Through all aspects of the camp day, the cabin unit becomes your camper’s home base and greatest unit of support. Guide Program - As part of a camper’s development, our older campers will have the ability to volunteer to work with our younger campers for the second week of the session. Our 13+ campers can assist staff to teach a skill class and gain leadership skills by leading our younger campers. Rite of Passage (One Week Camp, Ages 7-10) Maybe your camper is looking for a taste of what a resident camp is like; Rite of Passage camp is the experience your camper is looking for. Campers in this one week session get a sample of the resident camping experience. Leaders in Training ( Ages16+) A chance for our older campers to learn what it takes to become a positive youth development role model. Teens will be part of a cohesive team that will be essential in the operation of camp and gain experience working with campers. This program requires an application and a selection process.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT The resident camp experience is rooted in helping campers grow into confident, independent, civically minded members of society. Campers at Camp Spaulding gain opportunities to be leaders and explore their own opinions through fun and engaging experiences.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

The safety and care of our campers is paramount. Our Health Center is staffed by a full-time nurse who ensures that our campers stay healthy and are well cared for. In addition to our Health Center staff, the entire staff is trained in first aid and CPR.

LIFE AT CAMP SPAULDING

“I think that Camp Spaulding will always be one of my top favorite things.” - Camp Spaulding Camper

THE CABIN EXPERIENCE

Our entire camp program is geared toward helping campers build relationships with other. Campers will enjoy electronics free living with up to 9 other campers and 2 adult role models to create friendships that will last a lifetime.

Cabin living also creates a great opportunity for learning independence and confidence. Even the most dependent camper has to learn how to make their bed, set a table, sweep out the cabin, and keep track of their things. This creates opportunities for self growth and leadership for youth of all ages.

Cabin mates will eat meals together; learn how to share a common living space; depend on each other and; work together to decide what type of camp experience they want to have. The cabin functions as your child’s home base and main source of support in an already supportive environment.

One of the best ways to build community is to share a meal with your friends. Cabin groups will sit down with their cabin for a meal 3 times a day. Our food service program has experience with special dietary needs as well as cultural restrictions.
