HOW IT WORKS: • Free 12 week program, meets twice per week • Physician referral • Children work with a registered dietitian who will simplify healthy eating and help children explore options that are as appealing as they are nutritious • Our certified personal trainer creates a noncompetitive environment where children can experience the fun of physical activity while developing team-building skills • Family sessions • Tons of healthy fun! YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Youth and Teen Programs (Ages 6-17) LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Y-Achievers Program (Nashua YMCA) A post high school preparedness program, the Y-Achievers program focuses on helping middle school and high school teens figure out what they want to do after high school. The program focuses on helping teens determine what they are interested in and giving them exposure to their options in order to pursue those ideas. We also work on identifying what teens need to be successful in school and in their social life. Through experiential sessions and caring adult mentorship, our teens gain important academic and interpersonal skills. There is no fee to join the program. The Y-Achievers program runs for the academic year and registers for the 2015-2016 program year in late winter/early spring.

HEALTHY LIVING

Swim Lessons

Imagine watching your child swim for the first time all by himself. The joy of seeing that accomplishment and confidence is unmatched. In our swim lessons, we’re not just teaching life-saving skills- we’re building confidence. Y lessons are unique due to their focus on preparing the swimmer for all aspects of the water experience and life by teaching skills in these five focus areas: • Personal Safety- Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both child and parent • Personal Growth- Activities that help child and parent grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development • Stroke Development- Activities that improve swimming abilities so children can move in the water safely • Water Sports and Games- Activities to develop an appreciation of aquatic activities for a lifetime of fun in the water, including age-appropriate games and songs • Rescue- Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies

Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children aged one to four years. (Source: Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine 2009)

Our Approach

We use a student centered learning style to keep children actively involved in their progression. When students are allowed to figure out what to do on their own, they are actively and creatively participating in their learning. As a result they tend to remember what they learn better and longer. Participants are placed in a level based on age and ability to help meet the developmental needs of each swimmer. Beginner swimmers will wear an IFD (instructional flotation device) to help them swim in the correct body position and improve their arm and leg motions while being able to remain afloat.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SWIM LESSONS PARENT TIPS •

• •

Register for the correct level! Use the program descriptions in this guide, or give us a call. We can talk about your child’s readiness for a particular level OR schedule a free assessment. There is a $10 Transfer fee for children registered for the wrong level. Get ready! Children with shoulder length hair or longer must tie it back. Swim caps and goggles are strongly encouraged for Ray or Guppy levels and higher. Don’t forget to bring your towel to the pool deck! Meet your instructor on the pool deck in the designated drop off zone. Note: your instructor may be in the pool finishing a class. If you choose to leave the pool deck during lessons, please return 5 minutes prior to the end of class for pick up. Please note: you must remain in the building for the duration of class!

Help us keep our pool clean • • •

Please remove your street shoes- they carry dirt, salt and other germs onto the pool deck. Take a shower- this helps keep our water fresh and balanced! Stay home- if your child has not been feeling well in the last 24 hours, please stay home! Aquatics staff may ask your child to leave if they are visibly ill. A system credit may be issued for absence for medical reasons, just provide a doctor’s note. Swim diapers are required for children not fully potty trained.

HEALTHY LIVING Swim Lessons

PARENT/CHILD (AGES 6 MONTHS-3 YEARS) Parent & child classes are designed for water acclimation. Our objective is to support families with a foundation of swim skills at an early age. Basic skills are introduced (kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, etc.) as well as water safety education and tips. Age appropriate songs and games are utilized to promote fun while reinforcing fundamentals. A minimum of one guardian per child must be in the water. Swim diapers are required.

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (AGES 3-5 YEARS)

Pike For the beginner swimmer who cannot yet swim independently on their front or back. There are no prerequisite swim skills. Eel Completion of pike level and/or must be able to submerge face in the water, back float for 20 seconds with assistance and paddle front & back with IFD 10 yards. Ray Completion of eel level and/or must be able to “bob” (go under water) 5 times, back float 20 seconds with IFD without assistance, paddle on front, back and side 25 yards with IFD/15 feet without. Starfish Completion of ray level and/or must be able to “bob” 10 times, back float 30 seconds without IFD or assistance; jump into deep water & roll to back float w/out assistance, paddle on front, back and side 25 yards without assistance. Gym & Swim (18-36 months OR 3-5 years) A great way to introduce your child to the gym and pool. After 30 minutes of structured games and activities using balls, parachute play and more, we’ll head to the pool for a structured swim lesson. Parent participation is required for the gym and swim portions of the 18-36 month class. Time is allotted between the gym and the swim to change for the pool. Flips & Flippers Your child will be introduced to basic tumbling on land followed by a structured swim lesson in the pool. Each portion is 30 minutes long with time allotted between tumbling and swimming to change for the pool. Do some flips then splash into the pool to use your flippers!

Private Swim Lessons (ages 4+)

Private swim lessons for youth and adult offer the one on one attention to tackle individual goals and objectives.
