YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Youth and Teen Programs (Ages 6-17) LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Y-Achievers Program (Nashua YMCA) A post high school preparedness program, the Y-Achievers program focuses on helping middle school and high school teens figure out what they want to do after high school. The program focuses on helping teens determine what they are interested in and giving them exposure to their options in order to pursue those ideas. We also work on identifying what teens need to be successful in school and in their social life. Through experiential sessions and caring adult mentorship, our teens gain important academic and interpersonal skills. There is no fee to join the program. The Y-Achievers program runs for the academic year and registers for the 2015-2016 program year in late winter/early spring.

JOIN THE QUEST THIS SUMMER (Grades 7-9) What is the quest?

The premise is simple. Every week, we will work to build a cohesive and engaged group of teens through games, team building activities and challenges. On the Friday of each week, we will take a trip to have our teens experience something new and exciting. Throughout the week, teens will work together to complete tasks in order to get clues of what the trip will be, with the big reveal the day before. Imagine a treasure hunt, where each day you get closer and closer to your goal.

Leaders Club is a YMCA of the USA national program that provides club members with many opportunities for leadership training, personal growth, service to others and social development. By connecting with adult advisors, teens have role models and mentors who can have a positive impact on their lives. Participants meet on a weekly basis in a structured and safe environment. Activities include: service-learning projects, volunteer and fundraising events, academic support, field trips and weekend regional rallies throughout the school year. For more information contact: Larry Harding at the Nashua Y branch, (603) 882-2011 or lharding@nmymca.org.

HEALTHY LIVING

Swim Lessons

PARENT/CHILD Parent & child classes are designed for water acclimation. Our objective is to support families with a foundation of swim skills at an early age. Basic skills are introduced (kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, etc.) as well as water safety education and tips. Age appropriate songs and games are utilized to promote fun while reinforcing fundamentals. A minimum of one guardian per child must be in the water. Swim diapers are required. PRESCHOOL/YOUTH Students are divided by age, Preschool (3-5) and Youth (6+ years). This allows age and developmentally appropriate learning. A child aging up within the first 2 weeks of a session may be granted approval to register for the next age bracket, but otherwise we follow the age guidelines firmly. The Y swim lesson program is not about checking off a skill, it’s about mastering a skill. This means a swimmer can demonstrate the skill with proper form repeatedly. A skill may be mastered in the technical sense, but endurance is also a factor. A student must demonstrate the proper form for the required distance. We use IFDs. IFD (instructional flotation device) include bubbles, barbells, noodles, kickboards, etc. IFDs are used as a tool to encourage proper form or body position and build endurance. IFDs also allow the instructor to swim safely with more than one child at a time. The Y provides IFDs for class use. PARENT TIPS • TRANSFER FEE: Children registered for the wrong level will be asked to transfer. Space is limited so please register for the correct class. There is a $10 transfer fee for children registered in the wrong level.

CREDIT/REFUND POLICY • Requests for program withdrawal may be made by phone, email or in person at the Welcome Center. • There will be no refunds for program withdrawal unless requested one week prior to the first day of class. • Prorated credits will be issued for medical conditions which prohibit the participant from continuing in a class. A doctor’s note is required. • Programs without sufficient enrollment may be canceled; an option of a credit or refund will be given. • There will be no make up classes, credits or refunds for personal absences, vacations, inclement weather or missed classes. • Credits or refunds will be issued for individual classes that are canceled by the Y unrelated to #5 above. • Transfer requests may be made providing there is an opening in the desired class. Requests can be made by phone, email or in person at the Welcome Center. THUNDER/LIGHTENING POLICY To best protect our members and guests, the pool will close during overhead thunder and lightning storms. The Aquatics Team is trained to identify storms and respond appropriately. The pool will close from the first sight/sound of overhead thunder/lightning and remain closed for 30 minutes after the storm has passed. Classes will resume promptly after the pool has been reopened. Classes will be canceled if the closure impacts more than half of the lesson time.

• Children with should length hair or longer must braid or tie back in a bun. Swim caps are recommended for youth levels. • Goggles are recommended for Ray or Guppy level and higher classes. • Please bring towels to the pool deck. • Street shoes, food and drink are not permitted on the pool deck. • Please do not bring your child to class if they are sick or have been sick within the last 24 hours. Aquatics staff may ask your child to leave if they are visibly ill. • Swim diapers are required for all children not fully potty trained. • Meet your instructor on the pool deck in the designated pick up zone in each branch. • If you chose to leave the pool deck during lessons, please return 5 minutes prior to the end of class for pick up. Please note: you must remain in the building for the duration of class

Private Swim Lessons (ages 4+) Private swim lessons for youth and adult offer the one on one attention to tackle individual goals and objectives. Private lessons follow the same session dates and registration procedures as regular group lessons. Simply select from one the available days/ times through our online registration system to book your lesson. You can also coordinate group lessons of up to three participants with your family or friends. All private lessons are taught by our experienced group swim lesson instructors. Professional aquatics staff may be requested at an additional fee. These lessons consist of 8, 30-minute sessions.

A great way to introduce your child to the gym and pool. After 30 minutes of structured games and activities using balls, parachute play and more, we’ll head to the pool for a structured swim lesson. Parent participation is required for the gym and swim portions of the 18-36 month class. Time is allotted between the gym and the swim to change for the pool. Flips & Flippers (ages 3-5) Your child will be introduced to basic tumbling on land followed by a structured swim lesson in the pool. Each portion is 30 minutes long with time allotted between tumbling and swimming to change for the pool. Do some flips then splash into the pool to use your flippers! Adaptive Swim Lessons (ages 5-10) Adaptive lessons at the Y are designed with you in mind. Instructors will use the curriculum of the YMCA of the USA swim program with a modified approach to foster the learning process for your child. We use a combination of verbal, visual and hands on instruction to best serve each child’s learning style. While this class is specifically designed for children with cognitive special needs, traditional group and private lessons are also great options. Contact our Aquatics Coordinators to find the best match for your family!

Rates are per person for an 8 wk. session: Family Youth Community Single $160 $240 $320 Double $99 $150 $229 Triple $91 $136 $199 Homeschool Swim Lessons (ages 6-13) A 45 minute structured lesson including Y swim components of stroke development, personal growth, safety, water sports, games and rescue skills. TOGETHER WE CAN We know when we work together, we move more individuals, families and communities forward. Every day, Y staff, volunteers, members, friends and community partners work side-by-side to tackle the important issues impacting our communities.

BUILDING TOMORROW TOGETHER

What if more people joined our cause? Imagine what the Nashua area would be like if…

Through the power of investment growth, your gift to endowment establishes a chain of giving that extends far beyond your lifetime. The YMCA of Greater Nashua established the YMCA Heritage Club to recognize individuals and families who have designated a gift that supports the endowment. For information about gift/estate planning please contact Elizabeth Covino, director of community relations, at 603.598.1533 or email at ecovino@nmymca.org.

• More kids had a safe place to go to learn, laugh and play • More people had the guidance and tools to lead healthier, more balanced lives • More of our neighbors could access the support needed to create a better future for themselves Together, we can make this a reality. Our community may face challenges, but we see possibilities rather than obstacles because of committed Y friends like you.
