A TIME TO DISCOVER Fall Program Guide 2014 YMCA OF GREATER NASHUA

HEALTHY LIVING YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program—coming fall of 2014! This program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes. You do not have to do it alone! Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives. The program is led by a trained Lifestyle coach and is a one-year program. The goal of the program is to reduce body weight by 7% and increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week. LiveSTRONG The YMCA of Greater Nashua, through a partnership with LiveStrong, is strengthening our community by supporting and improving the health of cancer survivors in our area. Through a free 12week program in a caring, safe environment, we will help you reclaim your health and well-being. In small supportive groups with other survivors, you will increase your strength and energy, while working at your own pace. The Y would like to help you be “you” again. Join us!

YMCA OF GREATER NASHUA FACILITIES: Nashua Branch 24 Stadium Drive

Prescribe The Y In 2008, the YMCA of Greater Nashua partnered with local physicians to support adolescents with healthy lifestyle behaviors. Together we developed a referral system for doctors to Prescribe children in the 85th percentile using the “Prescription for a Healthier You” referral form. This free 12 week program meets twice a week for one hour. Our expert staff delivers a quality education and assists families by developing strategies to make healthy choices part of their daily routine. Our personal training staff provides children with a caring, noncompetitive environment where they can experience the fun of physical activity while developing team-building skills. Our registered dietician will simplify healthy eating and help children explore options that are as appealing as they are nutritious. Children and families actively work each week to discover their path to health through balance and teamwork. For more information on any of these programs please contact Maegan Sullivan, Director of Healthy Living msullivan@nmymca.org or 603-689-2657

The YMCA’s annual support campaign allows us to service the entire community. The Y is a charity, dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With programs from A to Z—like athletics to advocacy, dance classes to disease prevention, volleyball to volunteerism—we don’t just strengthen individuals, we strengthen communities. Last year, financial support made it possible for 2,700 local kids, families and adults to experience the Y at significantly reduced costs; in programs such as child care, summer day camp, wellness, sports, dance & arts, and enrichment. This assistance was valued at over $490,000. To find out how to get involved or to donate, please visitwww.nmymca.org or call603-598-1533. Every gift matters. Everyone has a role to play. Together, we can achieve so much more.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Swim Lessons (Parent/Child, Preschool & Youth) PARENT/CHILD Parent & child classes are designed for water acclimation. Our objective is to support families with a foundation of swim skills at an early age. Basic skills are introduced (kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, etc.) as well as water safety education and tips. Age appropriate songs and games are utilized to promote fun while reinforcing fundamentals. A minimum of one guardian per child must be in the water. Swim diapers are required.

PRESCHOOL/YOUTH Students are divided by age, Preschool (3-5) and Youth (6+ years). This allows age and developmentally appropriate learning. A child aging up within the first 2 weeks of a session may be granted approval to register for the next age bracket, but otherwise we follow the age guidelines firmly. The Y swim lesson program is not about checking off a skill, it’s about mastering a skill. This means a swimmer can demonstrate the skill with proper form repeatedly. A skill may be mastered in the technical sense, but endurance is also a factor. A student must demonstrate the proper form for the required distance. It’s important to know that a child may spend several sessions in the same level before progression occurs. Every child will progress at a different rate. We use IFDs. IFD (instructional floatation device) include bubbles, barbells, noodles, kickboards, etc. IFDs are used as a tool to encourage proper form or body position and build endurance. IFDs also allow the instructor to swim safely with more than one child at a time. The Y provides IFDs for class use.

PARENT TIPS

• TRANSFER FEE: Children registered for the wrong level will be asked to transfer. Space is limited so please register for the correct class. There is a $10 transfer fee for children registered in the wrong level. • Children with should length hair or longer must braid or tie back in a bun. Swim caps are recommended for youth levels. • Goggles are recommended for Ray or Guppy level and higher classes. • Please bring towels to the pool deck. • Street shoes, food and drink are not permitted on the pool deck. • Please do not bring your child to class if they are sick or have been sick within the last 24 hours. Aquatics staff may ask your child to leave if they are visibly ill. • Swim diapers are required for all children not fully potty trained. • Meet your instructor on the pool deck in the designated pick up zone in each branch. • If you chose to leave the pool deck during lessons, please return 5 minutes prior to the end of class for pick up. Please note: you must remain in the building for the duration of class.

14

Gym & Swim (18-36 months OR 3-5 years) A great way to introduce your child to the gym and pool. After 30 minutes of structured games and activities using balls, parachute play and more, we’ll head to the pool for a structured swim lesson. Parent participation is required for the gym and swim portions of the 18-36 month class. Time is allotted between the gym and the swim to change for the pool.

Flips & Flippers (ages 3-5) Your child will be introduced to basic tumbling on land followed by a structured swim lesson in the pool. Each portion is 30 minutes long with time allotted between tumbling and swimming to change for the pool. Do some flips then splash into the pool to use your flippers!

Homeschool Swim Lessons (ages 6-13) A 45 minute structured lesson including Y swim components of stroke development, personal growth, safety, water sports, games and rescue skills. Class is followed with 20 minutes of free swim with water slide access.
