Una storia da raccontare. Silvio Xompero, il presidente, è alla guida della Margraf con i fratelli Raffaele e Sergio, e l’Amministratore Delegato Franco Masello. Incontrarlo significa incastrare impegni e incrociare agende, ma, al momento delle presentazioni, la stretta di mano è vigorosa e si procede spediti. Lo scambio è schietto, senza giri di parole. Idee chiare, concretezza e una gran passione per il marmo: chiediamo a lui di raccontarci di più di quest’azienda fondata nel 1906 nella valle del Chiampo, cresciuta sotto la proprietà della famiglia Marzotto e sempre caratterizzata da una forte componente tecnologica e spinta all’innovazione. // A story to tell. Silvio Xompero, President of Margraf, steers the company at its helm alongside his brothers, Raffaele and Sergio, and Managing Director Franco Masello. Arranging a meeting with him means deftly maneuvering appointments to coincide schedules in busy agendas. When introduced, his handshake is vigorous and the interview proceeds quickly. Our conversation is straight and to the point: clear ideas, common sense and a passionate enthusiasm for marble. We ask him to tell us more about this company that was founded in 1906 in the Chiampo Valley. Margraf was initially owned and developed by the Marzotto family and has always been characterized by a strong emphasis on technology and experimentation.

Marble is alive. You don’t need to be an expert to understand that it is marked with layers of accumulated sediment compressed over millions of years. When crafted by experienced hands, marble can take on any shape and form; it can enclose history in its veins. We know about entire civilizations thanks to buildings and works of art made over the centuries because marble is a material that is made to last, combining beauty with functionality.

1 / Villa Poiana Il cavaliere Bonifacio Poiana, commissiona a Palladio la costruzione di una nuova residenza sulla via per Montagnana, di fronte al castello di famiglia. Palladio realizza una fabbrica caratterizzata da una originale serliana in facciata ispirata ai modelli di Donato Bramante come il Ninfeo di Genazzano. Tra il 1555 e il 1560 negli interni lavorano il plasticatore Bartolomeo Ridolfi e i frescanti Bernardino India, Anselmo Canera e Giambattista Zelotti.

Knight and soldier Bonifacio Poiana commissioned Palladio to build a new residence on the way to the town of Montagnana, in front of the family’s castle. Palladio designed a building characterized by a unique Serliana on the façade inspired by Donato Bramante’s Nymphaeum in Genazzano. The sculptor Bartolomeo Ridolfi and the painters Bernardino India, Anselmo Canera and Giambattista Zelotti executed the internal decorations between 1555 and 1560.

Eretta per volontà dell’avvocato Carlo Cordellina, la villa fu progettata dall’architetto veneziano Giorgio Massari, che si ispirò dichiaratamente a moduli palladiani. I lavori di costruzione durarono dal 1735 al 1742, anno in cui il Massari preparò il progetto per le barchesse, portate a termine verso il 1760. Al progetto collaborò anche l’architetto Francesco Muttoni.

Venetian architect Giorgio Massari designed the villa for the prominent jurist Carlo Cordellina. The work reflects a marked familiarity with Palladian architecture. Primary construction work lasted from 1735 to 1742 – year in which Massari designed the barchesse – and continued until 1760. Architect Francesco Muttoni also collaborated on the project.

Caldogno, Vicenza Arch. Andrea Palladio

3 / Villa Caldogno

Nel 1541 Losco Caldogno nobile vicentino e mercante di seta eredita una proprietà a Caldogno a nord di Vicenza. Incarica quindi Palladio di costruire una villa. La data 1570 incisa sulla facciata indica probabilmente la conclusione dei lavori di decorazione condotti da Giovanni Antonio Fasolo e Giambattista Zelotti.

In 1541 Losco Caldogno, a Vicentine aristocrat and silk merchant, inherited property in Caldogno, a town north of Vicenza. He commissioned Palladio to build a villa on the existing farmyard complex. The date “1570” inscribed on the façade probably indicates the end of the decorating campaign executed by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo and Giambattista Zelotti.

4 / Villa Valmarana ai Nani Il primo semplice impianto della casa, risale al 1670. Nel 1720 il complesso Ă¨ ceduto ai Valmarana, che nel 1736 chiamano per lavori di restauro Francesco Muttoni. A questi si devono i frontoni triangolari sormontati da statue della palazzina, la foresteria con lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;adiacente atrio a colonne tuscaniche e la scuderia con portico bugnato a serliana sulla facciata conclusa da frontone triangolare. Nel 1757 il conte Giustino Valmarana chiama Giambattista Tiepolo e il figlio Giandomenico per affrescare gli interni della villa e della foresteria.

The first foundations date back to 1670. In 1720 the Valmarana family acquired the complex and entrusted Francesco Muttoni to restore the property in 1736. His intervention is evident in the triangular pediments crowned by statues on the main residential building, the guest quarters and adjacent atrium with Tuscan columns, and the stables displaying an ashlar Serlian arcade on the faĂ§ade that terminates in a triangular pediment.

Foreword

Con questa pubblicazione Margraf si propone di trasmettere le nozioni basilari sul marmo e sulla pietra. Purtroppo, in questi ultimi anni, marmo e pietra sono stati erroneamente considerati materiali difficili sia nella posa che nella manutenzione. Ci si scorda le caratteristiche di eternità e di durezza che li hanno resi protagonisti nell’architettura passata, e capaci di resistere immutabili nel loro fascino al trascorrere dei tempi. Chi non ha ammirato lo splendore e la potenza espressiva di opere grandiose quali il Partenone, il Colosseo, o la Basilica di San Marco? Possono forse i marmi utilizzati denotarne fragilità? Sicuramente no... è quindi la non conoscenza a limitarne l’utilizzo. Attraverso questo semplice manuale Margraf, con l’esperienza maturata in oltre cent’anni di storia, vi accompagnerà verso la riscoperta di materiali nati prima dell’uomo e diventati veicolo del suo progresso sulla strada della civiltà.

Margraf created this manual to provide basic information about marble and stone. In the last few years marble and stone have been increasingly misconstrued as being difficult to lay and maintain. People somehow forget that centuries-old architectural wonders that still proudly stand today are made of these materials, whose inherent beauty strength and durability defy time itself. Who hasn’t admired the splendour of architectural masterpieces like the Parthenon, the Coliseum or the Basilica of Saint Mark? If marble was indeed fragile, would they still be standing? Surely not, and hence the use of these materials is limited only by the lack of knowledge. Through this simple manual Margraf will share its centennial knowledge and help you rediscover materials that were born before humankind and unfailingly supported its progress along the road towards civilization as we know it.

Utilizzo dei marmi e delle pietre

Use of marble and stones

Si possono identificare due grandi famiglie di impiego dei marmi e delle pietre: interni ed esterni. Interni: pavimenti, rivestimenti, piani cucina, vasche, lavabi, lavelli, scale... sono infinite le applicazioni della pietra e del marmo negli ambienti interni. Le diverse tipologie di marmi e pietre possono essere lavorate con tagli, spessori e superfici diverse, presentandosi ogni volta come irripetibili elementi compositivi. Esterni: pavimenti, rivestimenti, paracarri, cordoli, statue, portali, cornici... l’impiego del marmo all’esterno può avvenire nelle più svariate tipologie e finiture. Nei rivestimenti esterni, in particolare, il marmo funge da vero e proprio cappotto; la posa delle lastre può avvenire o attraverso l’utilizzo di colle speciali o con sistemi di aggancio per pareti ventilate. Maggiore attenzione si deve prestare nell’utilizzo di marmi per pavimentazioni esterne, dove si consiglia sempre, come spessore minimo di utilizzo il 3 cm. Inoltre tutti i marmi proposti da Margraf per le pavimentazioni esterne, in seguito a 48 cicli di gelo e disgelo sono risultati antigelivi (UNI EN 1341:2003) e quindi idonei per l’utilizzo. Tra questi si ricordano: il Lipica Fiorito, il Lipica Unito, il Crema Nuova, la Pietra Ducale, il Giallo d’Istria, il Blu Perla, il Perlato Royal...

Marble and stone applications can be divided into two broad categories: indoor and outdoor. Indoor: flooring, cladding, kitchen countertops, bathtubs, wash-basins, sinks, stairs...there are endless ways marble and stone can be used indoors. Different types of stone and marble can be cut to a specific size and thickness, and finished with a variety of techniques to highlight the unique features of each piece and the overall effect of combined elements. Outdoor: paving, cladding, stone-posts, curbs, statues, portals, frames... marble for exterior applications is available in an astounding variety of styles and finishes. Marble is particularly indicated for cladding applications, as it acts as an aerial coat; the slabs can be installed using special glues or special coupling for ventilated walls. For outdoor marble floors, it is always advisable to use marble that is at least 3-cm thick. In addition, all marble Margraf offers for outdoor flooring has undergone 48 freezing/thawing cycles, and is hence frost-resistant (UNI EN 1341:2003) and suitable for outdoor. Classificazione delle rocce per origine

Classification of rocks by origin

Marmi: rocce metamorfiche, sottoposte a condizioni di pressione e/o temperatura diverse da quelle esitenti al momento della loro formazione. Derivano da sedimenti carbonatici di calcite e/o dolomite. Travertini: rocce sedimentarie; si originano per precipitazione chimica di rocce fortemente carbonatiche. Presentano una tessitura irregolare, con frequenti concrezioni e vacuoli. Arenarie: comunemente chiamate anche SANDSTONES, sono caratterizzate da una granulometria molto fine, e dalla scarsa presenza di cemento. Graniti: rocce intrusive, molto compatte, derivanti da magmi solidificati negli strati più profondi. Sono composti principalmente da quarzo, ortoclasio (colore bianco o grigio) e da miche (bianche o nere). Basalti: rocce effusive, derivanti da magmi solidificati esternamente a temperatura ambiente; sono costituiti principalmente da olivine. Porfidi: rocce effusive, costituite da quarzo, miche e ortoclasio.

Marbles: are metamorphic rocks subjected to pressures and/or temperatures that differ from those that existed when the formed. They are composed of re-crystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Travertines: are a type of sedimentary rocks formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate. They have an irregular texture, frequently with vacuoles and concretions. Sandstones: are sedimentary rocks characterized by an extremely fine grain and minimal presence of calcium carbonate. Granites: intrusive and very compact rocks, and formed through the solidification of magma deep within the earth’s crust. They are mainly composed of quartz, orthoclase (white or gray) and mica (white or black). Basalts: effusive rocks, formed from magma that solidified in open air conditions; they are mainly composed of olivine. Porphyries: effusive rocks, composed of quartz, mica and orthoclase.

Il peso di volume di una roccia Per peso specifico di una roccia si intende il rapporto tra il peso della roccia ridotto in polvere, privata cioè dei vacui, e il peso di un ugual volume di acqua distillata a temperatura 4°C. Nella pratica, la cosa che serve conoscere è il peso indicativo per mq di materiale da utilizzare per il calcolo di struttura o per capire l’entità dei pesi da trasportare.

The specific weight of a rock The specific weight of a rock is defined as being the ratio between the weight of the pulverized rock, meaning free of vacuoles, and the weight of an equivalent volume of distilled water at a temperature of 4°C. In practical terms, one needs to know the approximate weight per m2 of the material for structural engineering calculations or to verify the weight for transport purposes.

Conducibilità termica

Thermal conductivity

Il marmo è un buon conduttore di calore, infatti la conduttività specifica del materiale è di circa 3 W/m°K (conducibilità termica = watt / metro x Kelvin), che indica sostanzialmente un materiale a poca resistenza termica rispetto ai materiali isolanti (con conduttività = 0.04 W/m°K). Se il marmo non è sottoposto ad uno scambio di calore rimane freddo, ma se lo si scalda, trattiene il calore e, poco a poco, libera l’energia corrispondente al calore immagazzinato. Per questo è considerato un materiale ideale nell’utilizzo del riscaldamento a pavimento.

Marble is a good heat conductor; in fact the specific conductivity of the material is approximately 3 W/m°K (thermal conductivity= Watt / metre x Kelvin), which basically indicates a material with little thermal resistance compared to insulating materials (with conductivity = 0.04 W/m°K). If the marble is not exposed to a heat source it remains cold, although once heated it will store the energy and very slowly release it back into the environment. For this reason it is deemed to be ideal for underfloor heating applications.

Assorbimento

Absorption

Il materiale lapideo, per le sue caratteristiche chimico-fisiche, prevede dei coefficienti di assorbimento che variano a seconda dello stesso. A prescindere dal tipo di impiego è consigliabile valutare tale coefficiente e provvedere all’opportuno trattamento. Margraf è supportata da Fila Industria Chimica spa, nello sviluppo delle tematiche relative ai trattamenti superficiali. Nel caso di materiale lapideo impiegato per rivestimenti esterni posti nelle parti inferiori, a contatto con il suolo (es. nelle zoccolature), si deve fare in modo che le lastre non vengano a contatto diretto con fonti di umidità, prevedendo giunti impermeabilizzanti.

Depending on their chemical characteristics, stone materials have different absorption coefficients. Regardless of the type of application, it is advisable to consider this coefficient and treat the material accordingly. Margraf collaborates with Fila Industria Chimica S.p.A. to develop and implement surface treatments for its products. If stone materials are used to clad the portion of an exterior structure closest to the ground (e.g. skirting), they must be protected from direct sources of moisture and hence the joints must be waterproofed.

Finiture superficiali

Surface finishes

Le finiture superficiali possono essere utilizzate per ottenere o un carattere estetico particolare o un grado di antiscivolosità (principalmente per usi esterni). Tra le varie finiture si distinguono:

Surface finishes can be used to obtain a particular appearance, or non-slip characteristics (these mainly for outdoor). The best known finishing techniques include:

1. superfici da lavorazione ad urto R spuntatura: è una lavorazione manuale che si ottiene martellando la superficie lapidea con punta e mazzuolo. Il risultato finale è dato da un effetto in rilievo molto evidente e da un aspetto cromatico di contrasto. Questa finitura si ottiene a partire da uno spessore minimo di 3 cm. R Bocciardatura: è una lavorazione che conferisce aspetto rustico al marmo annullandone difformità e variazioni e rendendolo antisdrucciolevole. L’effetto bocciardato si ottiene con un martello a punte piramidali, la bocciarda e il risultato finale può essere a grana grossa e fine, passando per tutti i gradi di finitura intermedi. Questa finitura si ottiene a partire da uno spessore minimo di 3 cm. R sabbiatura: la sabbiatura viene utilizzata anche per il trattamento di pulizia e manutenzione dei materiali lapidei, è data dallo sfregamento della loro superficie con un getto di sabbia fine, silicea sotto pressione, a secco o con acqua. La superficie trattata apparirà sbiancata, ruvida, granulosa al tatto e il tipo di lavorazione conferirà al materiale un aspetto rustico, delicato ed elegante. A seconda della grana della sabbia utilizzata, si può ottenere una sabbiatura più o meno grossa. Questa finitura si può ottenere anche su spessori inferiori ai 3 cm. R rigatura: è caratterizzata da una successione di solchi affiancati, eseguiti a mezzo di dischi diamantati o di un’ampia gamma di utensili a profilo variabile. Questa finitura si ottiene a partire da uno spessore minimo di 3 cm. R velvet: trattasi di una finitura esclusiva prodotta da Margraf, caratterizzata da solchi affiancati a intervalli irregolari, eseguiti a mezzo di particolari utensili, appositamente creati. È disponibile solo nei formati 61x30,5 e 30,5x30,5 - sp. 1 cm, e nei seguenti materiali: Grigio Tao, Bianco Gioia, Bianco Statuario, Bianco Venezia, Calacatta.

1. surfaces obtained with impact work R Chiselled: this finish is obtained by striking the stone surface by hand, using a pointed tool and a mallet. The final result is an extremely evident texture that showcases contrasting colours. This finish can be applied to materials that are at least 3 cm thick. R Bush-hammered: this is used to give marble a rustic appearance, hide imperfections and colour variations in addition to making it slip-proof. The bush-hammering effect is obtained using a diamond-nosed hammer; the bush-hammer and the resulting texture can vary from rough to finegrained and encompass all other textures in between. This finish can be applied to materials that are at least 3 cm thick. R Sanding: sanding, which is also used to clean and maintain stone surfaces, is obtained by wet or dry fine siliceous sand blasting of the surface. The treated surface will appear bleached, rough and grainy to the touch, and this type of machining will give the material a rustic, delicate and elegant appearance. The texture will be rougher or coarser depending on the size of the sand granules used. This finish can also be applied to materials that are less than 3 cm thick. R Scored: this finish is characterized by a succession of flanked grooves carried out using diamond discs or a wide range of variable-profile tools. This finish can be obtained on materials that are at least 3 cm thick. R Velvet: this is an exclusive finish produced by Margraf, characterized by grooves flanked at irregular intervals using special tools created solely for this purpose. Velvet finish is available only the for the following materials offered in 1 cm thicknesses, and sized 61 cm x 30.5 cm and 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm: Grigio Tao, Bianco Gioia, Bianco Statuario, Bianco Venezia, Calacatta.

R Graffiatura: finitura caratterizzata da scanalature irregolari, simili a dei graffi. Si ottiene su uno spessore minimo di 3 cm.

R Scratched: this finish is characterized by irregular grooves that resemble scratch marks. It can be applied to slabs at least 3 cm thick.

R Mille Quadri: finitura caratterizzata da una fine quadrettatura antiscivolo.

R Mille Quadri: this finish is characterized by a small anti-slip chequered pattern.

R spiaggia: finitura caratterizzata da una particolare graffiatura. È disponibile solo nei formati 61 x 30,5 e 30,5 x 30,5, e nei seguenti materiali: Botticino Fiorito, Grigio Tao.

R Spiaggia: this finish has a truly unique scraped texture. It is available in two sizes, 61 cm x 30.5 cm x 1 cm thick and 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm x 1 cm thick, in the following types of marble: Botticino Fiorito and Grigio Tao.

2. superfici a spacco terMico (spessore minimo 3 cm) R fiammatura: è un processo termico ottenibile usando ossigeno e gas (propano o equivalenti). La fiamma agisce investendo ad alta temperatura (2500-3000°C) le superfici da trattare, le quali subiscono uno shock termico a circa 600°C; questo, combinato ad un immediato raffreddamento ad acqua della superficie, provoca un fenomeno di dilatazione e quindi spacco termico del quarzo o del silicio. La tessitura superficiale apparirà scabra e in rilievo, facendo risaltare così la struttura e il colore del materiale. Poiché tale processo di vetrificazione alimenta la resistenza alle aggressioni atmosferiche e all’erosione, la fiammatura è particolarmente indicata per i rivestimenti esterni, ma deve essere utilizzata con sapienza solo sui marmi che resistono a forti sbalzi termici.

2. thermal split surface (on materials thicker than 3 cm) R Flaming: it is a thermal process obtained using oxygen and gas (propane or equivalent). The finish is created by applying an extremely hot flame (2500-3000°C) to the surface, which undergoes thermal shock once heated to about 600°C; this, combined with an immediate cooling of the surface with water, provokes a dilatation phenomenon and hence the thermal splitting of the quartz or silicone. The texture of the treated surface is coarse and in relief, which highlights the structure and colour of the material. Since this vitrification increases resistance to adverse atmospheric agents and erosion, flaming is particularly indicated for outdoor cladding, but the treatment must be applied skillfully and only to marbles that can withstand abrupt changes in temperature.

3. smoothed surfaces:

R levigatura: rende la superficie liscia e piana conferendo al materiale un aspetto opacizzato e per certi aspetti vissuto. La colorazione si presenta quindi smorzata nei toni e quasi velata. A seconda della mole abrasiva utilizzata si possono avere vari gradi di levigatura: • levigata grossa o frullonata, ottenuta con piatto abrasivo a grana 60 • levigata media o normale, ottenuta con piatto abrasivo a grana 120 • levigata fine, ottenuta con piatto abrasivo a grana 220 • semilucida o satinata, ottenuta con piatto abrasivo a grana 400 o piatto di gommalacca e spuntiglio ventilato

R Polishing: exalts the colour, veining or the intrinsic characteristics of every type of marble, for maximum intensity and brilliance. R Honing: it smoothes and evens out the surface thus giving the material a matt and somewhat aged appearance. The colour tones are therefore softer, almost hazy. The degree of honing depends on the grain size of the abrasive disc used to perform the operation: • coarse honing is obtained using a 60 grit abrasive discs • medium or standard honing is obtained using 120 grit abrasive discs • fine honing is obtained using 220 grit abrasive discs • half-polished or satin finishes are obtained using 400 grit abrasive discs or shellac discs and emery paste

R Brushing: is obtained using tools equipped with abrasive brushes; this technique confers an orange-peel appearance, with a slightly wavy texture evocative of silk. R Rolling: special rollers made of abrasive material are rubbed against the surface of the stone to produce this slightly lined effect.

Per “su misura” si intendono tutti quei prodotti che vengono realizzati su specifiche richieste del cliente. Principalmente si suddividono in:

“Custom-made” products are made according to the exact specifications listed on the customer’s order. They mainly comprise:

1. paviMenti e rivestiMenti: R pavimenti e rivestimenti interni: sono ricavabili da tutti i tipi di marmo. A partire dallo spessore 2 cm è possibile realizzare qualsiasi tipo di formato. Si deve però tenere presente che più grande è il formato richiesto, più grande è lo sfrido che risulta dalla lavorazione e di conseguenza il prezzo del prodotto finito. Nel caso si desiderino dimensioni grandi, contenendo i costi, è buona norma richiedere delle misure “a sfruttamento lastra”. In quest’ultimo caso la dimensione esatta dei formati si saprà solo dopo aver preso visione delle lastre da lavorare. Per problemi di resistenza alla flessione e di difficoltà durante la posa si sconsiglia l’impiego di pezzi di dimensioni superiori a 1 mq.

Keep in mind that although there are no size limits, the amount of scrap generated during production progressively increases with the size of the finished product and hence the larger this is the more it will cost to produc. To minimize the cost of large custom-made products you should ask for “exploitable slab sizing”, thus the final products size will be determined based on the dimensions of the slabs you select. R pavimenti e rivestimenti esterni: per quanto riguarda l’utilizzo esterno sono preferibili marmi di elevata densità e con un basso grado di assorbimento. Maggiore attenzione si deve prestare nell’utilizzo di marmi per pavimentazioni esterne, dove si consiglia sempre, come spessore minimo di utilizzo il 3 cm. Inoltre tutti i marmi proposti da Margraf per le pavimentazioni esterne, in seguito a 48 cicli di gelo e disgelo sono risultati antigelivi (UNI EN 1341:2003) e quindi idonei per l’utilizzo. Tra questi si ricordano: il Lipica Fiorito, il Lipica Unito, il Crema Nuova, la Pietra Ducale, il Giallo d’Istria, il Blu Perla, il Perlato Royal... Anche in questo caso a partire dallo spessore 2 per i rivestimenti e 3 cm per i pavimenti è possibile realizzare qualsiasi tipo di formato. Per ridurre i costi e per avere meno sfrido è consigliabile lo “sfruttamento lastra”, con larghezza costante e lunghezza variabile. Nei pavimenti e rivestimenti i marmi venati possono essere tagliati in vari modo, presentando diversi effetti estetici: • a macchia aperta: necessita una selezione delle lastre dallo stesso blocco in modo da poter lucidare le lastre che, una volta “aperte” e tagliate, presentino il classico disegno a “rombo”. Questo tipo di soluzione richiede un particolare lavoro di preposatura e marcatura della merce raffilata per far si che le venature s’incontrino; • a vena ricorrente: necessita una selezione delle lastre in modo che le venature siano orientabili tutte dallo stesso verso. Anche in questo caso è necessaria la preposatura e la marcatura delle lastre; • a vena casuale: si tratta di una disposizione casuale delle lastre, senza considerare alcun parametro di venatura.

massive weight, which makes them quite difficult to lay. R Outdoor paving and cladding: for external applications it is best to choose marbles characterized by high density and low- absorption. Outdoor paving should be selected and laid carefully, and it is always advisable to use marble that is at least 3 cm thick. All the marble Margraf offers for outdoor paving applications has undergone 48 freezing/thawing cycles that make it frost-resistant (per UNI EN 1341:2003) and therefore suitable to be used outdoors. These include the following types of marble: Lipica Fiorito, Lipica Unito, Crema Nuova, Pietra Ducale, Giallo d’Istria, Blu Perla, Perlato Royal, and more. In this case as well, starting with slabs at least 2 cm thick for cladding and 3 cm thick for paving, we can provide the product in any size you wish, and you should still ask for “exploitable slab sizing” to minimize waste and hence the cost of your finished items. Veined marbles used for flooring and cladding can be cut in different ways that produce stunningly unique effects: • book-matched: this effect requires selecting slabs from the same block and polishing those which, once “opened” and cut will form the classic “lozenge” pattern. This type of solution relies on pre-laying and numbering the slabs to ensure the veins match perfectly; • repeated vein: it requires selecting slabs with veins that run in the same direction. This effect also requires pre-laying and numbering of the slabs; • random vein: in this case the slabs are laid without trying to match the veining.

Si consiglia inoltre l’utilizzo di finiture antisdrucciolevoli o fascette antiscivolo, obbligatorie negli ambienti pubblici. Si ricorda che durante la posa è molto importante considerare le pendenze per il deflusso dell’acqua. Per cercare di contenere i costi è prevalente l’utilizzo di lastre di sp. minimo 3 cm per le pedate e lastre di sp. 2 cm per le alzate. È però consigliabile raffilare dalla medesima lastra di sp. 3 cm entrambi gli elementi, in modo da ottenere omogeneità cromatica. L’utilizzo di spessori più importanti esaltano ovviamente l’entità della scala e la bellezza del marmo. Per dimensionare alzate e pedate è inoltre fondamentale conoscere la finitura di bordo. Di seguito alcuni esempi:

4. stairs Stairs with marble treads and risers – concrete-cladded stairs Also in this case the choice of marble must be driven by its intended use: indoor: there are no particular limitation in the choice of marbles outdoor: as stated for outdoor paving, Margraf recommends using only frost-resistant marbles for exterior stairs (UNI EN 1341:2003). Non-slip strips will also be necessary to ensure safety (especially in public areas). The installation lay-out should consider the slopes required for water runoff. In both cases, to limit costs, 3 cm slabs are normally used for the treads and 2 cm slabs for the risers. However, to minimize colour variations it is advisable to cut both elements from the same 3 cm slab. The use of thicker elements obviously enhances the visual impact of the stairs and the beauty of the marble. To ensure both threads and risers fit perfectly, it is also necessary to know how the edges will be finished and joined. Here are some examples:

Self-supporting monolithic stairs They can be made using any type of material, but must be laid during construction of the load-bearing wall. Laying

La posa è un’operazione molto delicata che, eseguita a regola d’arte, valorizza nel tempo il marmo che è stato acquistato. È pertanto indispensabile che questa operazione sia eseguita da personale specializzato e che vengano utilizzati collanti specifici per ogni situazione, così come è necessario partire da un sottofondo (massetto) perfettamente piano e compatto. Il massetto è quell’elemento costruttivo orizzontale che viene adottato per livellare la superficie su cui deve essere posato il pavimento. Lo spessore del massetto è variabile in base alla tipologia dell’ambiente (dai 4 agli 8 cm).

Laying is a very delicate operation which, when done properly, enhances the marble through time. It is therefore indispensable for this operation to be carried out only by specialized personnel, using adhesives formulated specifically for each type of situation; it is also necessary to start from a perfectly level and compact base (cement substrate). The base (cement substrate) is the horizontal underlayment used to level the surface upon which the floor is to be laid. The thickness of the base varies according to the type of room (between 4 cm and 8 cm thick).

posa da interno • Se il pavimento o il rivestimento è di colore scuro, è consigliabile l’utilizzo di collante cementizio grigio tipo KERAFLEX MAXI GRIGIO, additivato con lattice LATEX PLUS, per aumentare l’elasticità dell’aggrappante. • Se invece il pavimento o il rivestimento è di colore chiaro o trasparente, è consigliabile l’utilizzo di collante di colore bianco quali KERAFLEX MAXI BIANCO o KERAQUICK ADESILEX P10, sempre additivato con lattice LATEX PLUS. • È consigliato l’utilizzo di colle rapide tipo KERAQUICK ADESILEX P10 additivato con LATEX PLUS, con marmi particolarmente assorbenti come i marmi di colore bianco, verde e qualche rosso. • Se il marmo presenta sul retro uno strato di rinforzo composto da rete e resina, si consiglia l’utilizzo di un collante poliuretanico tipo il KERALASTIC. • Si consiglia di evitare la posa di marmo su tasti di colla. Per normativa, tutte le lastre e marmette devono essere “imburrate” con doppia spalmatura per almeno il 90% della superficie. • Si consiglia di non utilizzare la colla come livellante del massetto. Sarà necessario uno strato di colla pari a 3-4 mm di spessore. In questo modo, la resa di 1 sacco di colla da 25 kg, 4 litri d’acqua e 4 litri di lattice, saranno sufficienti per la posa di circa 6 mq. • Nel caso di pavimenti riscaldati, si consigliano giunti di dilatazione ogni 40 mq circa di posa e ogni massimo 8 ml. Questi giunti potranno essere riempiti con siliconee MAPESIL LM (non rilascia macchie oleose) o AC con PRIMER FD, entrambi disponibili totalizzati in più varianti di colore. Si consiglia inoltre di posare le lastre con 2 mm di fuga una dall’altra, mantenendo una fuga da 6 a 8 mm di larghezza su tutto il perimetro e di stuccare infine le fughe con stucco cementizio KERACOLOR FF (fine per fughe fino a 3 mm) additivato con lattice polimerico FUGOLASTIC.

interior laying • If the floor or the covering is dark in colour, it is possible to use grey cement adhesive, such as KERAFLEX MAXI GRIGIO with LATEX PLUS additive, which increases the elasticity of the bond. • If the floor or the covering is light in colour or transparent, it is necessary to use a white adhesive, such as KERAFLEX MAXI BIANCO or KERAQUICK ADESILEX P10 with LATEX PLUS additive. • Always use quick-setting adhesives, such as KERAQUICK ADESILEX P10 with LATEX PLUS additive for particularly absorbent marble such as white, green marble and some types of red marble. • If the back of the marble has a reinforcing layer consisting of a mesh and resin coating, use a polyurethane adhesive such as KERALASTIC. • In any case, always avoid laying marble using dabs of glue. According to the regulatory standards, all slabs and tiles must be coated twice with the bonding agent on at least 90% of their surface. • Also, the adhesive must not be used for levelling an uneven substrate. The coating should be 3-4 mm thick. In this way, the yield of one 25 kg bag of adhesive combined with 4 litres of water and 4 litres of latex should then be enough to lay approximately 6 m2 of material. • In case of heated flooring, the layout should foresee expansion joints at approximately 40 m2 intervals or every 8 linear meters (max.). The joints should be filled with MAPESIL LM silicone (which does not produce oil stains) or AC with PRIMER FD. Both are available in several different colours. The slabs must also be laid at a distance of 2 mm from each other. It is also advisable to maintain a 6-8 mm wide groove all around the perimeter. The grooves should be filled with KERACOLOR FF cement-based grout (fine, for grooves up to 3 mm), mixed with FUGOLASTIC polymer latex.

Si consiglia inoltre di posare le lastre con fughe da 3 a 5 mm e di stuccarle poi con stucco cementizio KERACOLOR GG (grosso per fughe oltre i 3 mm) additivato con lattice polimerico FUGOLASTIC.

The slabs should be laid 3-5 mm apart from each other, and the resulting grooves should be filled with KERACOLOR GG cement-based grout (coarse, for grooves larger than 3 mm) mixed with FUGOLASTIC polymer latex.

Trattamenti

Treatments

paviMenti e rivestiMenti interni Dopo la posa è indispensabile procedere con un’accurata pulizia mediante lavaggio per eliminare eventuali residui superficiali quali malta, colla, etc. Evitare l’utilizzo di acidi perché, anche se diluiti, tendono a modificare l’aspetto dei materiali. Usare pertanto detergenti neutri tipo FILACLEANER in soluzione 1:20. Procedere con del protettivo antimacchia, da stendere a pavimento asciutto, tipo FILA MP90 (effetto naturale) o FILA STONE PLUS (effetto ravvivante), massaggiare la superficie per favorire la penetrazione del prodotto e per rimuovere l’eventuale eccesso di prodotto. Concludere il trattamento con una cera tipo FILAMATT (effetto opaco) o FILASATIN (effetto semilucido). Usare prodotti tipo FILACLEANER diluito in acqua in rapporto 1:20 (non necessita risciacquo) per la manutenzione ordinaria o in rapporto 1:40 contro sporco più tenace.

Do not use acids of any sort since even if diluted they tend to alter the appearance of the materials. You should use neutral detergents like FILACLEANER, diluted to a 1:20 ratio. Apply a stain protectant, such as FILA MP90 (natural effect) or FILA STONE PLUS (restoring effect) when the floor is dry. Rub it into the surface to help it penetrate; then wipe off any excess. Finish the treatment with wax, such as FILA MATT (matt effect) or FILA SATIN (semigloss effect). Use products such as FILACLEANER diluted in water at a 1:20 ratio (no rinsing required) for normal maintenance or at a 1:40 ratio to banish stubborn dirt.

descrizione petrografica (uni en 12407:2001) La descrizione petrografica, supportata anche dalla sezione sottile, indica la composizione mineralogica della roccia, definendo precisamente l’origine del materiale. In particolare la sezione sottile consente di evidenziare gli elementi e i fenomeni non rilevabili macroscopicamente, come ad esempio la presenza di alterazioni, micro fessurazioni e/o irregolarità altrimenti non riconoscibili ad occhio nudo.

Petrographic description (UNI EN 12407:2001) The petrographic description of a stone, also supported by thin section analysis, identifies the mineral composition of the rock and precisely defines the origin of the material. In particular, the thin section makes it possible to detect elements and phenomena such as alterations, micro-cracks and/or irregularities that are invisible to the naked eye.

resistenza a flessione sotto carico concentrato (uni en 12372:2007) resistenza a compressione uniassiale (uni en 1926:2007) Questa prova identifica il parametro di resistenza meccanica più significativo per le lastre in pietra naturale, specialmente per quel che riguarda il comportamento all’applicazione dei carichi. Maggiore è il valore di resistenza a flessione, maggiore è la resistenza del materiale alle sollecitazioni meccaniche di tipo flessionale. Questo dato di resistenza meccanica si può integrare con il valore di resistenza a compressione. Per quelle applicazioni in cui il comportamento previsto per la lastra è riconducibile ad una sollecitazione a compressione, allora è più utile fare riferimento al valore di resistenza a compressione piuttosto che alla resistenza a flessione.

Flexural strength under concentrated load (UNI EN 12372:2007) Uniaxial compressive strength (UNI EN 1926:2007) This test identifies the most significant mechanical resistance parameter for natural stone slabs, and especially their behaviour under applied loads. The greater its flexural strength, the more resistant the material is to flexural mechanical stress. Mechanical strength data can be integrated with compressive strength. For applications by which the slab expected behaviour derives from from compressive stress, it is best to refer to its compressive strength rather than the flexural strength data.

I valori riportati nella scheda CE indicano rispettivamente: • Valore minimo atteso: è il valore di resistenza a flessione corrispondente al quantile 5% di una distribuzione logaritmica normale per un livello di confidenza del 75%. • Valore medio: indica la media delle misurazioni ottenute sui provini sottoposti a prova. • Deviazione standard: indica la variabilità della resistenza a flessione ottenuti dalla prova eseguita, solitamente su 10 provini. Il suo valore è tanto maggiore quanto più le singole resistenze a flessione si discostano dal valore medio.

The values indicated in the CE sheet indicate respectively: • Minimum expected value: the flexural strength corresponding to the 5% quantile of a normal logarithmic distribution with a level of confidence of 75%. • Mean value: is the mean of the measurements obtained from testing the sample specimens. • Standard deviation: is the variability of the flexural strength values measured during the test, usually on 10 test pieces. The higher this value, the more the individual flexural strength values deviate from the mean value.

prova di gelività (uni en 12371:2003) La prova consente di apprezzare la durabilità del materiale agli ambienti soggetti a effetto gelo e disgelo. Consiste nel sottoporre una serie di provini a 48 cicli di gelo e disgelo (da -12 °C a +20 °C). Conclusa la serie dei 48 cicli i provini sono sottoposti dapprima ad ispezione visiva per valutare l’eventuale presenza di crepe, deterioramenti o perdita di frammenti, e successivamente alla prova di resistenza a flessione (o compressione). Si ricavano anche in questo caso il valore minimo atteso, il valore medio e la deviazione standard (come nella prova di resistenza a flessione). Il valore medio così ottenuto è confrontato con quello di resistenza a flessione. Generalmente si assiste ad una riduzione dei valori di resistenza alla flessione (o compressione). Quando questa riduzione è superiore al 20 % il materiale è classificato come gelivo.

Determination of frost resistance (UNI EN 12371:2003) The test measures the durability of the material in environments subject to freezing and thawing. It involves subjecting a series of sample pieces through 48 freeze/thaw cycles (-12 °C to +20 °C). After the 48 cycles, the samples undergo visual inspection to check for cracks, deterioration or loss of fragments, and then are given a flexural (or compressive) strength test. The minimum expected value, the mean value and the standard deviation are calculated in this case as well (as for the flexural strength test). The mean value is compared with the calculated flexural strength. Generally, the results indicate a reduction in flexural (or compressive) strength. When this reduction is greater than 20%, the material is classified as non-frost proof.

Water absorption at atmospheric pressure (UNI EN 13755:2002) This is the maximum quantity of water a stone can absorb after coming in contact with it, expressed as a weight percentage. resistenza a scivolosità (uni en 14231:2004 e uni en 1341:2003 - (appendice d)) Il valore indica la propensione alla scivolosità della superficie della pietra. La prova viene effettuata in condizioni bagnate su finitura superficiale a piano sega (USRV). La stessa prova viene eseguita anche sulle altre finiture superficiali. In tal caso la prova è eseguita in condizioni sia asciutte che bagnate (SRV “asciutto” e “bagnato”). Il valore di prova è inversamente proporzionale alla scivolosità, per cui maggiore è il valore (USRV e/o SRV “asciutto” e “bagnato”) ottenuto dalla prova, minore sarà la scivolosità della superficie. Valori indicativi: La scivolosità inferiore a 35 è considerata non raccomandabile.

Slip resistance (UNI EN 14231:2004 and UNI EN 1341:2003 - (Appendix D)) This value indicates how slippery the stone surface actually is. The test is performed in wet conditions on a sawn surface (SRVw). The same test is also performed on other types of finished surfaces. In this case, the test is performed in both dry and wet conditions (SRV “dry” and “wet”). As the measurement is inversely proportional to the coefficient of friction, the greater the value (SRVw and/or SRV “dry” and “wet”), the less slippery the surface will be. Indicative values: Stones with coefficients of slip below 35 should not be used for walking surfaces.

Abrasion resistance (uni en 14157:2005) This test measures the long-term durability of the material as a result of abrasive wear (sliding, walking, etc.). As the value is inversely proportional to durability, high values indicate a stone is “soft”, and therefore likely to wear out faster than harder stones under the same conditions. Le pietre naturali da taglio, sulla base della decisione 96/603 della Comunità Europea, rientrano nella classe A1 che le classifica come materiali ignifughi, cioè non soggetti a reazione con il fuoco. carico di rottura nei fori di fissaggio (uni en 13364:2003) Questo dato è relativo all’impiego delle lastre come rivestimento di opere ed edifici. Appositi perni sono inseriti e fissati in fori sul lato trasversale alla lastra stessa. Il valore del carico di rottura si ottiene misurando la resistenza massima sopportata del perno fissato alla lastra. Il valore minimo atteso, il valore medio e la deviazione standard sono calcolati in analogia alla prova di flessione (e compressione) resistenza allo shock termico (uni en 14066:2004) La prova è un metodo per valutare il comportamento delle pietre sottoposte a cicli termici repentini (da +105 °C ad immersione in acqua a +25°C) con la successiva misura del modulo elastico dinamico e la perdita in peso. Questa prova è richiesta solo in casi particolari. Massa volumica apparente (uni en 1936:2001) Si tratta della misura del peso per unità di volume del materiale, parametro importante nella progettazione strutturale (valutazione di carichi) oltre che per tutte le stime e quantificazioni del materiale. Generalmente esiste una relazione diretta tra massa volumica e proprietà meccaniche, per cui a masse volumiche più elevate corrispondono prestazioni meccaniche più elevate. Reaction to fire (EN 13501-1) All materials used in the construction sector fall within a fire resistance class. According to European Community decision 96/603, natural cut stone falls within class A1 which classifies it as fireproof material, meaning it does not react to fire. Breaking load at dowel hole (UNI EN 13364:2003) This measurement applies to slabs used as cladding for buildings and other structures. Special dowels are inserted and fixed within holes on the side transversal to the slab. The breaking load is obtained by measuring the maximum resistance withstood by the dowel fixed to the slab. The minimum expected value, the mean value and the standard deviation are calculated in a similar way to the flexural (and compressive) strength test. Thermal shock resistance (UNI EN 14066:2004) The test is a method to evaluate the behaviour of stones subjected to rapid temperature cycles (successive immersion in water from +105°C to +25° C in temperature) with subsequent measurement of their dynamic elasticity modulus and weight loss. This test is required only in special cases. Apparent density (UNI EN 1936:2001) This test measures the weight per unit of volume of the material, and is an important parameter for structural design (load assessment) as well as for all material estimates and quantifications. Since generally there is a direct relationship between density and mechanical properties, higher densities usually correspond to higher mechanical performance.
