2017 Keystone Derby Cup Keystone Derby Cup History In 2015, a rivalry in the state of Pennsylvania was born when the USL announced that Pittsburgh and Harrisburg will be playing for the Keystone Derby Cup. The Cup is awarded to the club with the best head-to-head record in Pennsylvania at the end of the USL season. The Pennsylvania Lottery are sponsors of the third-year rivalry that brought us some meaningful games.
2015 Head-to-Head En route to Pittsburgh winning the inaugural Keystone Ke Derby Cup trophy, they averaged four goals a game, scoring 16 total in four games. Harrisburg wasn’t too shabby themselves putting up 12 goals in four games, averaging three per match. In the team’s first matchup, Kevin Kerr made his name one to remember, connecting on a hat trick to give Pittsburgh a 5-2 inaugural victory. Kerr had five goals in four games spearheading the Riverhounds offense. Jason Plumhoff led the Islanders with three goals in his lone season for Harrisburg. That season Plumhoff led the Islanders in scoring with 10 goals and six assists for 21 points. Harrisburg finished the season 11-6-11 for 8th overall in the east while their rivals made the playoffs. Pittsburgh finished as a five seed with 41 points with a 11-8-9 record. Pittsburgh had a first round exit courtesy of the four seed, New York Red Bulls II, 4-2.

Harrisburg had a new game plan for Pittsburgh the following season. The Islanders blanketed the Riverhounds in their four matchups, holding their opponent to three goals in four games. Harrisburg won the second-year rivalry with a single 2-1 victory, a 1-0 loss and two draws of 1-0 and 0-0. No player scored more than once in this three-game series, but none was bigger than Craig Foster’s 65th minute goal to force a draw in the last meeting of the season between the two teams. Foster’s goal gave the Islanders a narrow season-series win to claim Harrisburg as the Keystone Derby Cup’s new home. Both teams had down years as Pittsburgh finished with the second worst record in the east standings with 25 points (6-17-6). Harrisburg finished the season with 31 points (8-15-7) and 10th overall in the east. s

2017 Head-to-Head In the team’s first matchup of 2017, goalie Trey Mitchell kept a clean sheet for Pittsburgh while Corey Hertzog scored the lone goal to give the Riverhounds their first win against Harrisburg since September 19, 2015. The low-scoring outputs continues as the second matchup ended in nil-nil draw at FNB Field resulting in a dire game three being the tiebreaker pending the score differential. The Riverhounds can retain the cup for the second time in three years if they earn a win or draw on August 12.

Coach’s Corner We know the stats, but what does Head Coach Bill Becher think? Check out what he had to say about where the team is and where they are headed!
of
“Looking at the season as a whole so far, I think that we’ve played well most games. The results are not where we want them to be, but we are working to put together a stronger second half. Like always, our expectation is to make the playoffs. We’ve put ourselves into a hole but we’ve had some really good performances up to this point. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we’re improving and believe that we still have a chance to put ourselves into that playoff position. The success of our team this year has been a collective effort and every eve game someone different steps up and a different guy stand out. If the guys continue to step up and perform as they are, we’ll see more success in this next half of the season.”

The United Soccer League is the largest professional soccer league in the United States and Canada, and the world with 30 teams in 20 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The USL was granted provisional Division 2 status by the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) Board of Directors in January 2017, a decision that came after the league more than doubled in size since 2014. The USL has built a stable, highly competitive professional soccer league on a national footprint with strong local ownership groups in major markets positioned for long-term success. The 2017 season will mark the introduction of three teams- Ottawa Fury FC, Reno 1868 FC and Tampa Bay Rowdies. In addition to league play, USL teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various domestic and international exhibitions. The USL is the longest-standing professional affiliate member of U.S. Soccer. The league's footprint is national but its schedule is highlighted by a regional approach designed to build rivalries. The USL's 30 teams are divided into two conferences - Eastern and Western - with each team set to play 32 games over 30 weeks during the 2017 regular season.

2017 LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 100-plus-y ear-old single-elimination tournament. In a nutshell, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country's league season, are open in the early stages to any club that qualifies, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer. In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the long-time soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, who died in 2006, was one of the sport's first major ownership figures in the United States and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. His family continues to operate FC Dallas in Major League Soccer. The winning team of the U.S. Open Cup has its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy, which has been permanently retired and remains at U.S. Soccer House in Chicago.

As the club said goodbye to Skyline Sports Complex, they said hello to new venues such as FNB Field and Clipper Magazine Stadium. With a couple key players returning from the 2015 season, there were also some new additions such as Aaron Wheeler, Jamie Thomas, and legendary Bobby Warshaw. The season's outcome came as a bit of a surprise when the Islanders finished 10th in the league after losing a few crucial games in the beginning. The Harrisburg City Islanders focused on improving as a team as their players, old and new, worked to find a successful system that would work for the future.

A crushing 2-1 defeat to the Riverhounds meant the Harrisburg City Islanders left the season empty handed after the Keystone Derby and a didn't get a spot in the playoffs. In August, the Philadelphia Union and Harrisburg City Islanders announced the dissolution of the relationship that had existed since the middle of the 2010 season, the last time the Islanders failed to make the playoffs.
