President’s Message Tina Hedrick Here we are, October already. We all can agree on something, that this year has been a crazy and challenging one. With CDC, state and local government guidelines forever changing, we have decided to hold our Annual Business Meeting virtual this year. It was held via zoom on Wednesday, October 21st at 9am. We updated the members on the state of PAPHCC, what the Executive Committee and other committees have been doing for you the members. We also held the election of officers for the association. I want to take a moment to say what a pleasure it has been for me to serve the last two and half years as your president and thank all the members for their support. The Executive Committee works hard behind the scenes to keep our Association moving forward and doing what is best for the Association. I know that Larry Shoemaker, sworn in as your president, will do an exceptional job for you, the members. Again thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president, it has been my honor. PAPHCC is following along with National PHCC and not raising dues for 2021. In the next coming weeks, the state will be sending out your 2021 Membership invoices. You
2

can pay them directly to the state and they will disseminate the dues to National, State and your Local. This way the process is streamlined and you will know that your membership in the Association continues. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to our Executive Director, Mike McGraw. Remember our Partners and Associates continue to support PAPHCC. They are an essential part of our Association and we continue to thank them for all they do. They see that when our members use their services and products. Invite them to your team meeting to introduce the latest products or technology that will help your business to grow and prosper. There is a list of our Partners and Associates located in this magazine and are also listed on our website, www.paphcc.org. I wish continued good health and safety for you and your families during these unprecedented times. We are all in this together. Take some time to be with your family. Tina Hedrick

Executive Director’s Message Michael McGraw Hello All,
Man, we are nearing the end of October and the holiday season is around the corner. What a year this has been. COVID-19 has certainly taught us how to work and live during a crisis. Hopefully, there will be a vaccine for the virus for the start of 2021. For those of you who have experienced the loss of a loved one from the virus we are deeply sorry for your loss. The virus has turned everyone’s way of living, working, and schooling upside down but as we always do, we come together and support each other during trying times. Stay Positive, Stay Strong, Stay Healthy, and together we will beat COVID-19. Our annual business meeting was a virtual event this year and was held on October 21st. Be on the lookout for the list of your new PA PHCC Officers in the very near future if you have not already seen them. Please try and take a moment to thank our now Past President Tina Hedrick for serving as your President for the last two and a half years. Tina did a phenomenal job as your President as she had some difficult decisions and issues to deal with including staying on as President for an additional six months due to COVID-19. Tina appointed a new Education Committee, which is chaired by your new President, Larry Shoemaker. The education committee had an apprentice video made which consisted of testimonials from (6) apprentices in which there were two representatives from Allentown Master Plumbers Association, Lower Bucks County PHCC and Philadelphia Suburban PHCC. If you google PA PHCC Apprentice Video, you can view the video or copy and paste this link in your browser. https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=XsL3TgUmUoE Tina also appointed an I & I Committee (Inflow & Infiltration).
If you are not a member, please contact Mike McGraw @ (800) 220-7422 to learn more about PHCC and the benefits available for your business. PHCC is a 3-Tier organization and the best Networking association offering many benefits to help profit your business. See membership application in this issue. Remember to send your PA One Call invoices to PA PHCC as this is a benefit of being a member of PHCC and is covered by the State as part of your dues. Do not pay directly to PA One Call as it is difficult getting reimbursed once the invoice is paid by you. (This is a $125.00 member benefit) We are working on updating our website and creating a new platform for the Contractor Locator. We will send notice out once most of the pages are updated. Do you have local PHCC news you would like to see in the PA Contractor? Send material to April Alarcon Ortega april@ paphcc.org November 3rd is election day in case you have not heard by now. LOL! Get out and vote! PA PHCC has endorsed John Kane for District 9 Senate Seat. John is the Business Manager for Plumbers Union Local 690 and has been a PA PHCC Partner for the last (10) years. With a new Legislative session to begin in January 2021, if elected, John will be an advocate for our industry and a leader in fighting for that Statewide Plumbing License in Harrisburg. Have a safe and happy autumn!! Until Next Time,
Michael McGraw PAPHCC Executive Director (800) 220-7422
And Remember To: Support your PA PHCC Partners & Industry Associates. We need to keep the PHC Industry professional. Together we can keep it Professional & Safe! They are listed in the PA Contractor and on our website.

Cybersecurity and Small
Business
It’s nearly impossible these days for businesses to operate without the help of Internet-connected devices, which exposes them to cybercrime. It’s the small- to medium-sized businesses that are especially vulnerable: half are victims of cybercrime and nearly two-thirds of those victims go out of business.1 Hackers increasingly target small businesses because there is a low risk they will be caught and a high probability they will be successful.
M
aintaining personally identifiable information (PII) on a computer connected to the Internet creates a nearly unavoidable risk. More than likely, names, addresses, and employment information are stored. If PII is acquired by someone without the authority to do so, that may result in a data breach. Banking, credit, and vendor account information is also vulnerable. Even if that valuable information is not stored on an Internet-connected computer, employees who have access to it can be duped into handing it over to criminals.
BEST PRACTICES AND SECURITY TIPS Tip 1: Train Employees in Information Technology Security. Training should be offered, especially to those who are responsible for accounts payable, human resources records, and wire transfers. Training for all employees should be reinforced periodically. Employees should be instructed to refrain from clicking links or attachments in e-mails, and not to pay an invoice until it’s confirmed that the sender actually sent it. Even if the e-mail appears to be from a trusted source, employees should learn to always copy and paste links or type URLs into a browser to see if the address is valid. Tip 2: Funds Transfers. Put a policy in place to have an inperson or telephone conversation to confirm e-mail requests for funds or personal information. It can greatly reduce the likelihood of fraudulent transfers or information sharing. Tip 3: E-mail Authentication. Phishing can be substantially reduced by verifying that the e-mail originated from the domain it is associated with. If your domain is hosted, it’s worth taking some time to look at how your e-mail is set up to ensure proper authentication schemes are used.2 Tip 4: Change default passwords on your router and other Internet-connected devices. Tip 5: Use a trusted VPN service when using Wi-Fi.
Tip 6: Back up your data regularly both to the cloud and to a removable device. Tip 7: Update firmware and software regularly. Tip 8: Provide firewall security for your Internet connection. Ensure your operating system’s firewall is enabled, especially if have employees working from home.3 Tip 9: Limit employees’ authority to install software and their access to only necessary information and data.3 Tip 10: Require employees to update unique passwords every three months.3 Security professionals used to strive for perfect security, but today they accept that goal as unachievable. Instead, they strive for optimal security by combining best practices with a risk management program that considers purchasing data compromise and cyber coverage through a knowledgeable insurance provider. Cyber Shield® from Federated Insurance is a two-part coverage program designed to help provide essential protection against many of the critical cyber and privacy exposures businesses face. Data compromise coverage and cyber coverage can help your company recover from intentional or accidental breaches.* 1 “Small Business, Big threat: Protecting Small Businesses from Cyber Attacks,” Statement for the Record: Dr. Jane LeClair, Chief Operating Officer, National Cybersecurity Institute at Excelsior College Before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Small Business, 4/22/15. https://smallbusiness. house.gov/uploadedfiles/4-22-2015__dr.__leclair__testimony.pdf 2 The leading e-mail authentication protocols are SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (Domain Keys Identified Mail) and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance); best practice is to utilize the three protocols together. https://dmarc.org/2016/03/best-practices-for-email-senders/ 3 “Cybersecurity for Small Business.” Online at https://www.fcc.gov/general/ cybersecurity-small-business * Coverage will be determined solely by the circumstances of the event and the terms of your policy, if approved for issue.
