Every year HGTV returns to America’s Largest RV Show in Hershey, PA to follow three families as they shop for the RV of their dreams while checking out the coolest gadgets on the market. Charles & Marisa Dean What’s your favorite part of RVing or, if you’re new to RVing, what are you most looking forward to? We are brand spanking new to this and went to the show having no idea what to expect. So far we can see that having the comforts of home with you makes traveling to the unknown much easier. Especially with small children or elderly relatives.

Who was your inspiration to get into RVing? It’s great to travel by land so you can see everything along the way, but after taking several long and memorable road trips as a child, with a family of 6 in a mini van, we know it can get a little cramped. Our grandparents loved long road trips as well as NASCAR and had always dreamed of owning an RV, so we wanted to see what made them so appealing.

While visiting America’s Largest RV Show, what RV features were you surprised with? It appears that you can fit a bathroom into any size RV, we were amazed. Also there were TVs everywhere; inside, outside, even sliding out of cabinets!

Are you planning on coming to next year's America's Largest RV Show? Sure, it was actually really fun. There aren’t just RVs but campers, outdoor kitchens and gadgets and of course food! It’s a fun day and right next to Hersheypark and the outlets.

What was your favorite part of America’s Largest RV Show? The people. Everyone is so excited to tell you about their experiences with their RV and give you advice. We were so surprised at how fun it was. There are so many options that you just wouldn’t even know about unless you were there. 2014 | EXPLORE Pennsylvania

What was your favorite part of being an HGTV family? The producers and staff do a great job making you feel at home and Chris is really a down to earth guy on and off camera. He made shopping, as first timers with no knowledge, really fun.

What convenience do you like best about RVing? I ADORE the thought if having my sassy, comfortable, home with us at all time.

How much does it mean to you to be able to take your pet with you? Taking Stewie (new dog) is a nonnegotiable! HE WILL BE WITH US! 6

Are you planning or would you ever consider being a “full-time” RVer? I SO would LOVE to travel for one year completely on the road. It is a dream of mine. It would make for a GREAT TV series. (hint, hint)

What was your favorite part of America’s Largest RV Show? I LOVED seeing all the brand new vehicles being released in the new model year.

What was your favorite part of being an HGTV family? I cannot even begin to express how incredible the whole crew was. They made us feel, comfortable, and confident. We had so much fun, and was THRILLED that we had to shoot an extra day. We were so sad to take the mic off after filming for two days. It was EASILY one of the coolest things we have ever done. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the whole experience, and would do it again in a heartbeat if asked!

The Mowery Family What’s your favorite part of RVing or, if you’re new to RVing, what are you most looking forward to? Minimal Packing, We would love to just get up and go!

Are there any “must haves” for your family while looking for an RV? Separate quarters, meaning a kids space and a master suite. Would also love a tub.

What convenience do you like best about RVing? If we had to pick just one, it would definitely be staying dry when it’s wet and damp out. We have braved quite a few storms while tenting and wringing out bedding gets old real fast.

Are you planning or would you ever consider being a “full-time” RVer? Heck yeah! It has always been a dream of ours to camp in all 50 states. That is one reason we Homeschool. We can be

flexible and set our schedule so we can travel and be adventurous.

While visiting America’s Largest RV Show, what RV features were you surprised with? All the amenities. Most of the campers were very luxurious and amazingly spacious.

Are you planning on coming to next year’s America’s Largest RV Show? Definitely. We had a lot of fun. We will be anxious to see what’s new for 2015.

What was your favorite part of being an HGTV family? (D. Mowery) The whole experience was incredibly awesome and everybody was great to work with. (S. Mowery) People asking us if we were a “cast family.” LOL. No we’re for real! (Kowen) Getting to ride on Chris’ shoulders and riding the golf carts. (KariAnne) Seeing all the cool bunk beds and kid spaces.

Host, Chris Lambton This was your first time at America’s Largest RV Show. What was the one thing that stood out to you about the event? The one thing that stood out was the size of the event. I knew it was the biggest RV show in America, but seeing it in person was a totally different experience. As I looked around at thousands of RVs covering space as far as the eye could see, I was almost speechless. I have tried to explain the magnitude of the event to friends and family back home and it's difficult to put into words. Everyone needs to see it for themselves!

the luxury and space these vehicles provide. My first apartment in New York City was 400 square feet so walking into the huge class A and C really took my breath away. Who wouldn't want a luxurious full kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room with multiple TV's on wheels? I totally understand why so many people choose to live in these!

What’s your favorite part of hosting a special like RV 2014? I really enjoyed talking to everyone involved with RV 2014. Speaking with dealers and hearing about the passion they have for the machines they created gave me a better understanding of the industry. It was incredibly exciting to hear about the creativity and innovation in the newest RVs. I can't wait to see what they come up with next. This experience has opened my eyes to the possibility of owning an RV one day!

What was your favorite RV/feature? I haven't had the opportunity to explore many RV's in the past and I was completely blown away by 2014 | EXPLORE Pennsylvania

A Way to Travel Side by side or far apart, grandchildren are always close to the heart — especially when Grandma and Grandpa are RVers! In a recent survey of RV owners by Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, over three-fourths of grandparents said they take their grandkids on trips. Over half enjoy two or more trips together per year. In today’s mobile society, RVing is a wonderful way to bring generations closer together by taking them away. RV trips bring back the days when the old and young lived side by side, with grandchildren learning family traditions and gaining valuable skills from their grandparents. Camping together still offers such learning opportunities for children from toddlers to teens. Planning the trip teaches geography, research and map-reading skills. At the campground, kids can help set up the site, hook up the RV for power and water, stock the refrigerator, make a campfire, prepare meals and wash dishes. Somehow it’s more fun in a house on wheels than at home!

RV journeys are especially grand when shared between generations Young and old alike enjoy the comfort and convenience of RVing. With an RV, favorite foods and toys, a clean bathroom and a comfortable place to nap are always close at hand. At the campground, playgrounds, swimming pools and new friends are a safe walk away. In the RV, there’s plenty of storage space to bring along bikes, trikes, floats, fishing and hiking gear, binoculars, nature guides, sports

equipment or whatever else moves you. Being active outdoors is a great way to keep the young fit and the seniors young. Even on a fixed income, RV camping is an affordable vacation that pays lasting dividends and yields priceless memories. Try these grand-travel tips, and start rockin’ down the highway with your grandkids! (Mom and Dad: these tips are for you too!) Make the trip part of the fun

• Shop together and stock the RV kitchen with favorite healthy snacks, fruit and drinks. Stop for a picnic at a park along your route. • Bring along games and crafts supplies for rainy day fun inside the RV. • Install and use child safety seats properly and observe all state seat belt regulations. • Help your grandkids with school projects by planning RV trips to the museums, memorials and historic sites which abound in Pennsylvania.

Many campgrounds offer WiFi service free or for a nominal fee. • Visit a zoo, aquarium or arboretum, and encourage the grandkids to take photos or draw pictures of their observations. • Busy schedules and organized activities have reduced many youngsters’ outdoor playtime. Slow down at the campground, and pass along skills like fishing, canoeing, identifying trees and wildflowers or cooking that fresh produce you picked along the way. Do a good deed

• Teach kids that giving back to the community is fun! Check with state parks and wildlife refuges about opportunities for volunteer conservation work. Take older kids to an archeological dig or Habitat for Humanity project. • Offer your RV as a base camp for your grandchild’s Scout or youth group activities. • Let older kids set up the RV’s electronics for a little downtime with their favorite music and video games. • An RV birthday sleepover is a great way to celebrate in a unique way with your grandchildren and their friends. • No matter how you fill your days together, spend the evening sharing family stories by the campfire. It’s a wonderful bonding experience you and your grandkids will always remember. Visit often in your guest house on wheels

• For long-distance grandparents, an RV is a wonderful way to shorten the miles. RVers are welcome as frequent guests because they bring their own accommodations. And with your own bed, linens, shower and towels, plenty of closet space, a place to store special foods and medication and maybe even take a quick nap, you’re sure to enjoy your visit even more!

• With a few tweaks, an RV trip can help maintain the bond you’ve always enjoyed with older grandchildren. Encourage them to invite a friend or bring a pet.

Take an RV trip to a country fair, and experience the best of Pennsylvania The roots of rural life go deep in Pennsylvania. Over 100 agricultural fairs across the state celebrate this rich heritage, preserve it for future generations and enable visitors to experience it for themselves. Every spring, summer and fall, communities large and small invite families to come to their fairs and enjoy the best of their gardens, fields, homes and workshops. RVers can hit the road for a day, a week or just about any late summer weekend and find Pennsylvania fairs within driving distance. From major regional events that draw thousands to down-home small town celebrations, every fair is different — but friendly people and local pride are always a main attraction. Here’s what else you’re likely to find at the fair.

Best in Show Many Pennsylvania fairs date back over a hundred years to farm shows where locals would sell their livestock, crops and wares. Today’s fairs continue to give residents the opportunity to shine in judged competitions and skills demonstrations. These shows are a wonderful opportunity for rural families to pass on skills and values, and for fairgoers and their children to learn about the rural way of life. No fair would be complete without its “grand champions” -- beef cattle, dairy cows, horses, sheep, swine, goats, poultry, rabbits and sometimes even alpacas and llamas! Other entertaining competitions from team milking, horse pulls and tractor rodeos to bull riding, log sawing and chainsaw carving demonstrate skills passed down through the generations. Some contests are just plain old-fashioned fun, like milk chugging, beautiful baby contests, 2014 | EXPLORE Pennsylvania

greased pig races, pedal pulls and pet shows for the kids. Traditional country pastimes are also showcased: fiddle contests, clogging, square and line dancing – just about any activity enjoyed in the local community. To preside over it all, a Fair Queen (and sometimes a little prince or princess) is chosen to represent the community in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen competition.

A Taste of Country Life From the best of the field to the oven, you’ll find it at the fair. Gardeners, homemakers and handicrafters of all ages can compete for prize money, ribbons and the pride of presenting their finest vegetables, fruits, grains, canned goods, flowers, artwork, needlework, pottery, photography and more! For locals and fairgoers alike, the “Blue Ribbon Apple Pie” and “Pennsylvania Preferred” Angel Food Cake and Chocolate Cake, Cookies and Bar Contests are an annual fair week highlight. The rules for these statewide bake-offs, set by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs, require key ingredients such as milk and eggs to be made in Pennsylvania.

Clowns and magicians often stroll through the grounds. At larger fairs, big name acts headline evening shows. For added excitement, grandstand events often include monster trucks, demo derbies, drag racing, harness racing and more. And kids of all ages will love the carnival games and rides along the midway.

Planning Your Trip Country fairs may be rooted in the past, but they’re also planted in the present. Today’s fairs use websites, Facebook pages and even mobile apps to provide detailed directions and maps, schedules of events, information on the cost of admissions and any extra charges for shows and special attractions. Check for reduced advance pricing, special pricing on sponsored days and family nights, and discounts or even free admission for children, seniors and the military. Gate admission per person is often under $10, making fairs a great value for your family entertainment dollar.

Entertainment for Everyone

Whether you’re planning day trips to nearby fairs or an extended tour of fairs around the state, an RV is a great way to go. With plenty of storage space on board, strollers and wheelchairs can be brought along for family members who need them. Ample RV parking is typically available at fairgrounds, but it’s wise to call in advance about parking for larger vehicles, particularly at smaller community fairs. Those who come to the fair in their RV enjoy the convenience of having their own restroom, plus a place to take a break in climate-controlled comfort. Since fairs prohibit pets on the grounds, fourlegged family members should be left at home or safely inside the RV with water and food (and AC running on hot summer days).

Some fairs open with a flourish of trumpets as local high school bands, fire trucks and antique vehicles parade through the town. Some finish with a bang as fireworks soar overhead. But all fairs offer something for everyone in the way of live entertainment. You’ll find local musicians performing bluegrass, rock, oldies, Christian and contemporary country music.

After a busy day at the fair, head to a nearby RV park for a good night’s sleep in your own bed. Turn to page 22 for listings of Pennsylvania RV and Campground Association member parks, listed regionally by county. Campgrounds get busy during fair weeks, so reserve ahead! Some fairs offer onsite camping, with limited amenities.

Be sure to bring your appetite! Baked goods auctions are popular, as are pie, hot dog, ice cream and other eating contests. Some fairs offer local home cooking and regional specialties (bring second helpings back to the RV to enjoy later). Traditional fair treats like funnel cake and cotton candy also abound along the midways found at most fairs.

What Makes an RV Show an RV Show? By Gary Bunzer Every September, throngs of seasoned RVers, young RVing families, newbies and future RV wannabes swarm to Hershey, PA for the premier showing of brand new RVs and a chance to view multiple football fields, (over 21 acres), of all types of recreation vehicles from the smallest, retro teardrop, tow-behind trailer to the biggest 45-foot diesel pusher bus. In between you’ll find, Class A, B and C motorhomes, truck campers, folding camping trailers, 5th wheel units, park model RVs and hybrid toy haulers of all sizes…and all from the most popular RV manufacturers in the country. Plus, we can’t forget to mention indoor displays of the latest gadgets and accessories for RVing enhancement.

he 46th annual America’s Largest RV Show, held in Hershey since 2005 and in downtown Harrisburg prior to that, is the initial showcase of the year for the RV Industry. It is recognized by all as the kick-off event for the new selling season; the first opportunity for RV aficionados to see all the newest models in one place at one time. So popular is America’s Largest RV Show that two cable television networks, HGTV and GAC, filmed programs during the latest show. Come Wednesday morning the line to enter the display area begins forming early. At the 2013 event over 43,500 people poured through the gates, another record year for the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association, the producers of the event. If you have the slightest interest in the RVing lifestyle, you owe it to yourself and your family to visit America’s Largest RV Show next time around! Another plus is that it’s held right across the parking lot from world famous Hersheypark® and Chocolate World®.

So what can you expect to see at an RV show?

Well, they can come in many shapes and sizes. Individual dealerships may have their own show featuring their various product lines or, in the case of America’s Largest RV Show, manufacturers from across the country and Canada come together to showcase all of their products in one location. Conserve, reduce and reuse are common sense rules of the RV road. Freedom to go where you want, when you want: that’s the RV lifestyle. With a home on wheels, America’s scenic wonders become accessible to anyone, regardless of age or physical condition. But with this freedom comes responsibility — to protect the environment and preserve it for future generations. RV travelers love the independence and self-sufficiency that comes with having on-board fuel, power and water. But they know the importance of conserving these resources. Traveling light, minimizing energy consumption and reducing waste are common sense rules of the RV road. Take these steps to reduce your RV’s ecological footprint. You’ll save money, while helping to save the environment! • Keep the engine on your motorhome or tow vehicle tuned up for maximum fuel efficiency. • Check and adjust tire pressure to save fuel. • Boost fuel economy with a clean air filter. • Turn off home utilities before you hit the road. • Lighten the load! Don’t fill up water and propane tanks unless you need to for the trip. • Don’t overload drawers and cabinets. You’ll find convenience stores and laundry rooms at campgrounds. • Whenever you can, use overdrive and cruise control to save fuel. • Don’t go off-road, and always use marked campsites.

• To cut down on trash, cut back on disposables. Assign each family member a cup and mix drinks with powders instead of buying glass or plastic bottles. Enlist the kids in washing and drying dishes rather than using paper plates. • Use natural cleaners like baking soda, vinegar, cornstarch and lemon. It saves money and your RV’s plumbing! • Minimize water usage. Don’t let the water run — fill the basin and then wash, shave, etc. Limit showers — get wet, turn the water off, lather up, then rinse. • When you do have waste, be sure to recycle at the campground. • Let nature help keep you cool. Draw shades and curtains; use a windshield shade, and put out the awning.
