I

want to thank all who attended the 2013 Annual Conference in Gettysburg. It was truly a historic conference as promised. We had the highest attendance that we’ve had in recent years and the CE’s and networking opportunities were outstanding. Not to mention the weather, facility, food service and staff, which were second to none.

A special thank you to Pat and the PPA staff, the Board and all of the Committees who contributed to the success of this convention.

They made my initial conference as President such a pleasure. I am looking forward to our continued success together, and of course congratulations to all of the award winners. I’d say a suitable recognition for a job well done. I was especially impressed with the

quality of work by the students at the Achieving Independence Competition.

I trust if you attended the convention you had an outstanding experience both professionally and socially. If you were not able to attend this year you should definitely consider our next site, which we are all very excited about. The 2014 Mid-Year will be at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort January 23-26th. In 2007 the resort underwent a 120 million dollar restoration. It is a state of the art hotel with full spa services.

Admit it, it sounds relaxing doesn’t it? So why not join us and be a part of Pharmacy: The Next Generation?

The legislature is back in session and we will be busy promoting our

priority legislation, which includes fair audits, immunizations, and PBM regulation and transparency.

I ask for your continued support in contacting your legislators and a quick response to any “call to action.” We depend on the membership for not only your moral support but also your financial support. Please help us reach our PharmPAC goal this year.

In Memoriam – Philip Seltzer – Pharmacist PPA Past President, Philip Seltzer died on August 16, 2013 at age 97. Phil and his wife Lillian were stalwarts of PPA during the Golden Age of Pharmacy and PPA from the end of World War II until the advent of third party payers in the 1980s.

Phil was the epitome of a Pharmacist of his generation. Coming from a large family, many of them Pharmacists, Phil graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy prior to the WAR. He served his country as a combat medic in the U.S. Navy, landing on IWO Jima at the height of that horrendous battle. In all of the years that I knew Phil, he never once talked about that experience! After the War, Phil and Lil owned several Pharmacies, but none as prestigious and successful as Limekiln Pharmacy in Montgomery County.

Active in the Montgomery County Pharmacists Association, Phil wanted to do more for his profession, representing his County on the Executive Committee of PPA, and rising to President of PPA in the 1970s. Phil’s second love was Rotary International, whose motto is “Service above Self”. He was also an active member of Temple University Pharmacy Alumni Association. His three passions were family, Pharmacy and Rotary.

Phil was a quiet, sincere gentleman, and a gentle man who was humble, but through his commitment to fulfill the Rotary motto was able to accomplish meaningful deeds. Through his efforts, Phil was able to acquire outdated surgical suites, equipment and other items that were going to be trashed. Along with other Rotarians, a shipload of these items were sent to South Korea to help that struggling country after the Korean War. While he did not seek recognition, awards or honors, recognition, awards and honors sought out Phil Seltzer. The greatest honor he achieved was the honor of a good name, to which we should all aspire.

Phil is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughter and son-in law, Annette and Cliff; granddaughter, Emily.

Financial Considerations For 2014 What changes should we consider making for next year?

014 is really not too far away. Fall is the time of year when the financially savvy start to look for ways to reduce their taxes and make year-end moves in pursuit of key financial objectives.

What might the big picture hold? Absent a crystal ball, let’s turn to the September edition of the Wall Street Journal’s Economic Forecasting Survey. The WSJ asks 52 economists for their take on things each month, and here is how they see 2014 shaping up for America: GDP of 2.8%, a jobless rate declining from the present 7.3% to 6.6% by the end of next year and consumer inflation of 2.5% or less through the end of 2015. These analysts also see the Federal Reserve keeping the benchmark interest rate at 0-0.25% for all of 2014. As for the yield on the 10-year note, their consensus

projection has it hitting 3.28% in June 2014 and 3.57% in December 2014. They also see home prices rising 5.22% YOY in 2014 after a 7.85% gain across 2013. Oil, they think, will average $102.73 a barrel on the NYMEX this December, declining to $98.17 a barrel next December. For its part, the International Monetary Fund projects 3.8% inflation-adjusted global growth next year, and a 4.3% tumble for global non-fuel commodities in U.S. dollar terms.

These are all macro forecasts worth keeping in mind.1,2 Now, how about your picture?

Workers Compensation

W

orkers Compensation laws currently exist in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. They are important to both pharmacy owners and pharmacy employees.

But do we understand what these laws provide and how they came to be? In most cases, these questions aren’t confronted until a claim occurs. It is much better to become educated prior to a claim for a number of reasons. For the owner, it is important to know your responsibilities prior to the claim to make sure that you have met them.

For employees, it is important to know what to do when an injury occurs and what benefits you will be eligible to receive.

In most situations involving personal injury, the laws of negligence apply. These laws are a mixture of statutory law and Common Law principles. Prior to Workers Compensation laws, employee injuries were handled as negligence cases. However, this presented many hurdles to the employee. The cases were difficult

to win because the employer had good defenses available to them.

If the employee contributed to the injury, or some other employee was the cause of the injury, then the employer was not liable. The employer could also assert that the employee knew the job was dangerous when they took it and assumed the risk. These cases were also difficult for the employee financially because they were not working and they didn’t have the resources available to them that the employer did. Employers were afraid of these claims because if the employee were successful, there were no limits on the amounts they could recover.

In 1910, the state of New York created the first Workers Compensation program in the United States . These statutes create trade-offs between the employer and the employees.

Workers Compensation is a statutory creation, so there are no Common Law principles involved in it. As a practical result, Workers Compensation is state-defined and differs in detail from state to state.

Therefore, this article can only discuss this topic at a high level.

You will need to explore on your own for the details of your state’s program.

The trade-offs are these.

The employee is entitled to compensation and/or benefits for job-related injuries or diseases without the necessity of proving fault on the part of the employer.

It is a no-fault system. These benefits are outlined in the statute and remove the specter of a runaway jury verdict for the employer.

Workers Compensation becomes the exclusive remedy for the employee, so they no longer have the right to sue their employer for their injury. The intent was to provide a system that was fair to both sides and that provided benefits to the employee in a timely manner. In effect, the system was designed to be easier, cheaper, and more efficient than courts.

Generally, Workers Compensation provides benefits to the employee only in certain circumstances. The cause of their injury must be related to their employment and the occurrence must have taken place while engaged in work-related activities.

While this looks simple on the

Features surface, there have been many disputes over causation and over what is a work-related activity. As a result, there is more litigation that occurs in Workers Compensation claims than was originally foreseen.

However, it takes place in front of an Administrative Law Judge instead of in a court. Many times this is still faster and less expensive than the regular court system.

As an employer, it is very important to know when you are required to provide Workers Compensation benefits to your employees. In most states, this is done by setting a threshold of a minimum number of employees that trigger the responsibility.

Failure to provide the benefits can result in fines and penalties being assessed against the owner.

Providing the benefits doesn’t always mean going out and buying Workers Compensation insurance.

Many states allow the employer to self-insure, while a few states require that the employer buy the coverage from a state-run plan. It is incumbent upon the owner to know what the requirements are and follow them.

As an employee, it is important to know whether you are included in the Workers Compensation plan (some states exempt certain types of workers) and what you should do if you are injured on the job.

Most states require a First Report of Injury be made as soon as possible.

Sometimes this might even be required within 24 to 48 hours.

Failure to report injuries timely could jeopardize the coverage. It is crucial that all injuries be reported

at the time that they occur.

Occasionally the employee thinks that the situation is very minor and doesn’t report it to the employer.

The problem is that if the injury worsens and becomes significant days later, it may be difficult to prove that the injury was job related or that it occurred while on the job.

Workers Compensation as it exists today may not be a perfect system. But it is a fact of modern life. Employers and employees should familiarize themselves with the responsibilities and benefits that they may have under their state’s program. z

If you haven’t, you still have the chance to put up to $5,500 into a traditional or Roth IRA for tax year 2013, $6,500 if you are 50 or older this year, assuming your income levels allow you to do so. (Or you can spread that maximum contribution across more than one IRA.) Traditional IRA contributions are tax-deductible to varying degree. The contribution limit for participants in 401(k), 403(b) and most 457 plans and the Thrift Savings Plan is $17,500 for 2013, with a $5,500 catch-up contribution allowed for those 50 and older.3,4 Incidentally, the FY 2014 federal budget set out by the White House proposes some changes to IRAs & 401(k)-style plans in 2014. First, if an individual’s total tax-deferred retirement savings through these plans is great enough to produce yearly retirement income of $205,000 for the individual and his/ her surviving spouse, then further contributions to such accounts would be nixed. (Today, it would take savings of nearly $3.5 million to produce such a retirement income stream.) Second, the Stretch IRA strategy would basically vanish: the FY 2014 budget proposes that all IRA inheritors follow the 5-year rule, in which an inherited IRA balance is reduced to zero by the end of the fifth year after the year in which the original IRA owner dies. (Disabled IRA inheritors and certain other beneficiaries would be exempt

from the 5-year rule.)5 Should you go Roth in 2014?

The younger you are, the more sense a Roth IRA conversion may make. If you have a long time horizon to let your IRA grow, have the funds to pay the tax on the conversion, and want your heirs to inherit tax-free distributions from your IRA, it may be worth it. If you think you will pay less tax in the future or you might die with a large charitable bequest, then it may not be a wise move.

Can you harvest portfolio losses before 2014? This is the time of year to think about tax loss harvesting – dumping the losers in your portfolio. You can claim losses equivalent to any capital gains recognized in a tax year, and you can claim up to $3,000 in additional losses beyond that, which can offset dividend, interest and wage income. If your losses exceed that limit, they can be carried over into future years. It is a good idea to do this before December, as that will give you the necessary 30 days to repurchase any shares should you wish.6 In terms of taxes, should you delay a big financial move until 2014? Talk with a tax professional about the impact that selling or buying a home or business might have on your 2013 taxes. You may want to wait. Receiving a bonus, getting married or divorced, exercising a stock option, taking a lump-sum payout – these events have potentially major tax consequences as well. Business owners may want to consider whether to make a capital purchase

or not.

Look at tax efficiency in your portfolio. Investors were strongly cautioned to do this at the end of 2012 as the fiscal cliff loomed; it is a good idea before any year ebbs into the next. You may want to put income-producing investments inside an IRA, for example, and direct investments with lesser tax implications into brokerage accounts.

Finally, do you need to change your withholding status? If major change has come to your personal or financial life, it might be time. If you have married or divorced, if a family member has passed away, if you are selfemployed now or have landed a much higher-salaried job, or if you either pay a lot of tax or get unusually large IRS or state refunds, you will want to review this with your tax preparer.

ased in Pennsylvania since 1974, Alert Pharmacy Services, Inc. has always had one mission in mind: Your satisfaction is our goal!

Bryan Gobin, RPh, CEO of Alert Pharmacy Services, Inc. explains that this pharmacy is different than most independent pharmacies where it fulfills the pharmacy needs of long term care facilities, personal care facilities, hospice organizations and group homes in the Tri-State area. “We provide care to our patients as if each resident is our own parent or grandparent.”

Alert Pharmacy originated and started serving the assisted living community in Mechanicsburg, PA in 1989 with only three employees.

A few years later in 1995 – 96, the pharmacy relocated to North Baltimore Avenue in Mount Holly Springs, PA. Within a couple years of moving to Baltimore Avenue, the company expanded and flourished so much that the building was bursting at the seams; therefore, the company relocated down the street to a larger building in Mount Holly Springs in 1999. To date, Alert Pharmacy Services, Inc. employs 40 full time and part time employees.

facilities up to two hours away in Bethlehem and Allentown, plus locally. “We would like to expand to communities further away; however, in order to provide the best care possible, we want to service assisted living facilities close to home.”

Today, Alert Pharmacy Services, Inc. has opened two other community pharmacies called Alert at Messiah Village and Alert at Menno Haven. These two pharmacies are located in Mechanicsburg and Chambersburg respectively, where they provide pharmacy services to walk-in residents on the retirement communities.

Since Bryan was born, he has always been surrounded by pharmacy. “My dad, Richard Gobin, got me involved in pharmacy since he was a pharmacist,” Bryan said. “My mom would bring us into the pharmacies to see my dad and I always grew up around pharmacies. Watching my dad interact with patients sparked my interest in pharmacy.”

Bryan Gobin completed his pre-pharmacy coursework at Penn State University prior to attending Temple University School of Pharmacy to obtain his B.S. in Pharmacy. After graduating from Temple, Bryan started working as a retail pharmacist splitting time between West Perry Pharmacy located in Loysville, PA and Holly Pharmacy located in Mt Holly Springs, PA. At this time, Bryan was part owner of Holly Pharmacy,

which is located right down the street from Alert Pharmacy Services, Inc. Then, in 1996, Bryan started to work at Alert Pharmacy and is still working there today.

“I really enjoy being an independent pharmacy owner because you work for yourself,” Bryan said. “When your customers are unhappy with a type of service,

you can make changes very quickly to alter daily operations in order to make your customers happy. If I had worked for a large corporation, these vital daily changes would not be possible.”

Education: Northeastern University in Boston, B.S. in Pharmacy; University of Scranton, Masters in Human Resource Administration with a concentration in Health Care.

What made you choose the profession of pharmacy: My father had recommended me to go into pharmacy. He was a pharmaceutical representative for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and he would frequently bring me along with him when he traveled. Originally, I wanted to go to medical school to become a pediatrician; however, my father encouraged me to apply to pharmacy school to use this field as a transition to medical school. At the beginning of pharmacy school, I was not fond of pharmacy as my perception was that pharmacists primarily only dispensed medications. I wanted to have more patient interaction. By the time I graduated from pharmacy school, I became very passionate about the pharmacy profession.

I discovered that pharmacy was more than placing pills in a bottle, but a profession that allowed direct patient care by providing education and clinical intervention. My goal as a pharmacist was to assist

in advancing the profession to become more involved in clinical experiences with direct patient care in order to enhance patient outcomes and patient safety.

How long have you been a PPA member: I have been a member since I was a student at Northeastern University. At Northeastern, I was the Vice President of Student APhA and we were asked to choose an affiliated state pharmacy association. Since I was from Pennsylvania, I chose the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA). I was not very active in PPA during school as I was in Massachusetts. However, once I began to practice pharmacy in PA and met my husband, who is an active PPA member, he got me actively involved.

How has PPA helped you professionally: By networking – most people think of pharmacy as retail oriented; however, PPA membership is varied and has allowed me to network with individuals in other practice settings. We learn from each other. PPA has also allowed me to collaborate with others to advance patient care, which has underscored that all practice settings are really intertwined.

There are so many possibilities that the pharmacy profession can expand to in the future by collaborating with each other.

What is the most memorable

experience of your pharmacy career: There was no single experience that is the most memorable; however, my most memorable experiences during my pharmacy career are those times that I have helped to improve a patient’s medical outcome through some type of clinical intervention. On a related note, I was humbled to be recognized by my peers by being awarded the Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award and the Bowl of Hygeia.

Whom do you consider a mentor and why: Both of my parents were my mentors. My father instilled in me the patient care aspect of my profession, while my mother taught me to always persevere, do things the right way, and wanted me to have a career.

therapeutic goals quickly and effectively while always using evidence based medicine.

Finally, I have just completed a proposal with the division of cardiology at Temple University Hospital to establish an anticoagulation service. This clinic will function similarly to the MGP clinic in that I will be providing clinical services under a CPA. The goal for this clinic is to ensure that all patients are adequately anticoagulated for their respective disease state and to ensure the safe use and monitoring of the various anticoagulants.

The benefit of these clinics and operating under a CPA is that it allows the pharmacist to focus on issues where many physicians just might not have enough time to focus on. This niche in patient care assists physicians in ensuring their patients are reaching their therapeutic goals quickly and safely while allowing the physician more time to focus on acute care issues.

The CPAs truly make these clinical services innovative as it allows me to initiate, discontinue, increase/ decrease doses, and order labs to

assess therapeutic efficacy and or toxicity. This allows pharmacists to have more of a direct impact on the health care of their patients.

Future of Pharmacy: Looking in the past, the pharmacy profession has advanced significantly and it will only continue to progress.

Pharmacists will have more autonomy, more pharmacists will assume greater clinical roles, and there is a shift to allow pharmacists to have prescriptive authority in the near future.

Advice for Future Pharmacists: If you are interested in more direct patient care, do not be afraid to approach physicians and offer them your services. Too many times, other members of the health care system are not familiar with our scope of practice and the clinical services that we can provide. We have to advocate for the profession and once people see exactly what it is that we can do, pharmacists quickly become a very important part of patient care and are relied on for their expertise.

a pharmacy is, “Employing local residents and providing them with job opportunities. Our pharmacy is very family oriented, where most of our employees have a sister, mother, cousin, uncle, father or friend working at the pharmacy.”

Since the origination of Alert Pharmacy, the services that the pharmacy offers have become more and more innovative each year. “We offer a lot of unique services to our assisted living facilities that afforded us to become a one-stop-shop,” Bryan comments. “We provide twice daily on-site delivery to all the long term care facilities, 24/7 access to a pharmacist, specialized packaging with blister cards and unit dose packaging, an electronic medication management system, on-site compounding, pharmacist consultant services and a few others.”

“We try to ensure that the facilities have appropriate access to emergency medications by using computerized cabinets for starter medications,” Bryan said.

By utilizing one of the computerized cabinets, the facilities will have access to emergency medications in a timely manner, preventing the need to wait for a special delivery or back up pharmacy. This allows all of their patients to receive the potentially life-saving medication almost immediately, in order to provide the utmost medical care.

On Rotation Article Head with GoesPPA, Herean Unforgettable Experience

W

henever I had the option to select the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA) for an APPE rotation, I was not completely sure how I could help the association. However, shortly after starting the rotation at PPA, I knew that this would be an unforgettable and important experience.

Almost immediately upon entering the door, I was able to dive right into editing and helping develop the Medicaid White Paper.

As Don Smith, the Government Relations Manager, explained to me this white paper will be used to argue a specific position and/or propose a solution to a government issue. The Medicaid White Paper delves into the issue that the Pennsylvania’s Department of Public Welfare began enforcing a limit of six prescriptions per month for categorically needy adult Medicaid recipients. Through helping draft this paper, I had a direct impact on helping to potentially modify the law to benefit Medicaid recipients. In addition, I had the opportunity

to attend committee meetings and numerous meetings with Representatives, Senators and the Governor’s staff in order to get PPA’s voice heard. Don taught me a lot about the legislative process and the importance of government advocacy for the advancement of the pharmacy profession. By the end of the rotation, I realized that every chance you get to talk to a legislator counts.

Additionally, I assisted Corey Wenger, the Membership Coordinator, with adding and renewing members in the PPA database and I learned about the many benefits members can and do receive. Quickly I learned how important it is for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students to belong to their state pharmacy association.

Also, I created an informational brochure for PPA pharmacist members to learn about PocketRx, a cell phone application that allows pharmacy customers to easily refill their prescriptions on their smartphone.

Coordinator, Erica Brandt, was a beneficial experience. Erica enjoys the tasks of communication with members through publications like the Pennsylvania Pharmacist publication, PPA Weekly Bulletin, and social media. During my rotation, I was responsible for interviewing and creating articles for the Pennsylvania Pharmacist publication. These assignments helped me learn more about pharmacy because they afforded me the opportunity to talk to pharmacists in a variety of different practice settings and opened my eyes into potential career paths that I was not aware existed. Unite For Change Wyndham Gettysburg, Gettysburg, PA Thank you to everyone who attended the 2013 PPA Annual Conference in Gettysburg, PA! Stephanie McGrath, PharmD—2013 Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Companies Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award Pharmacist at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, PA, McGrath also serves as a primary preceptor for the University of Pittsburgh Community Pharmacy Residency program. As a faculty member, Stephanie is active in the community pharmacy curriculum. She teaches students the basics of dispensing, the importance of a systematic process for check prescriptions, and the patient care process.

Karen Pater, PharmD—2013 Preceptor of the Year University of Pittsburgh Associate Professor, over the last two years, Pater has written the University of Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association OTC Jeopardy questions to give students a realistic experience to be competitive representatives from the school at PPA’s Mid-Year meeting. Through her efforts University of Pittsburgh students have been competitive and shown to be excellent in counseling patients, in both 2012 and 2013 students were among the top ten at the National Competition.

Robert Killoran RPh—2013 J. Allen Duffield Pharmaceutical Industry Award Mr. Killoran became a regional member of PPA when he relocated back to PPA in 2004. Since his relocation, Killoran has served as Regional Director for four years. He has been an active member of the Finance Committee for four years and has been involved with the PPCN Strategy Board as well as the GRASP Program.

Association News – 2013 Annual Conference Highlights Honorable Representative Seth Grove— 2013 Legislator of the Year Grove uses his expertise to benefit the residents of the 196th District.

During his three terms in office, Seth has successfully advocated for commonsense policies and fiscally conservative legislation. Grove has also sponsored the hopefully soon to be passed expanded pharmacist provided immunizations opportunities legislation and has fought hard for this legislation through several sessions.

Tamre Joyce RPh—2013 Cardinal Health Generation Rx Champions Award sponsored by the Cardinal Health Foundation Joyce has presented poison prevention programs to over 1500 kindergarten students in the Stroudsburg School District of the course of 20 years. She lectures to middle and high school students on pharmacy as a career—emphasizing the importance of being the “final check” on patient safety with their medication.

Melissa Krause PharmD—2013 George H. Searight Community Service Award In her local community, Krause is a two-term president of the Allegheny County Pharmacists Association. She is also a member of the Duquesne University Pharmacy Alumni Association where she serves as Treasurer.

The 2013 Annual Conference was held in Gettysburg. We were happy to see all of the students who attended the conference. This year we expanded our student programing. Students were able to attend a post-graduate track, a community pharmacy track, or a combination of the two. Both were very informative. Many students attended the Residency Showcase which featured 25 programs. A variety of post graduate training programs attended the showcase including PGY1-PGY2 residencies, community pharmacy residencies, and fellowship programs. The Residency Showcase created an opportunity for P4 students to speak with residency programs and ask questions.

During the Leadership Reception, student awards in Membership, Public Relations, and Government Relations were presented. The Membership Award recognizes the school that excelled at membership recruitment, retention, and involvement. The recipient of the membership award was The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy who not only significantly grew its membership in the past year but is continuing to do so.

The award in Government Relations appropriately salutes the school which has gone above and beyond in the area of advocacy work. This year’s government relations recipient is Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy. Duquesne had 33 appointments on legislative day advocate for changes in pharmacy practice and 5 students who attended PPA’s Annual Government Relations in Advocacy Student Program (GRASP).

The Public Relations Award recognizes the school that worked at developing and participating in public awareness and community activities that promote the role of the pharmacist. LECOM, this year’s recipient of the public relations award, participated in Kathy’s Kids and Generation Rx presentations at schools and also held several medication adherence events at community health fairs.

The annual Achieving Independence Poster Competition is designed to foster entrepreneurship among pharmacy students to one day own their own pharmacy! Four schools of pharmacy participated in 2013 Achieving Independence Poster Competition. The 2013 winner is The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy who presented an innovative practice model and plan.

The student section of the annual conference ended with the student board meeting and guest speaker. The board meeting gave students a chance from all seven schools of pharmacy to collaborate with one another and discuss upcoming student programing for the 2014 Mid-Year Meeting!

about running a clinic under a Collaborative Practice Agreement with physicians.

I enjoyed working with the Sara Powers, the Program Coordinator.

She taught me the importance of the different programs offered

by PPA, the academies within the association, affiliated county associations, and the value that these offer to members. Sara detailed the process about how she facilitates a CE presentation according to the standards required by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE). In addition, she explained to me the entire process of how pharmacists and pharmacy technicians earn CE credits. After learning this, I was able to help coordinate an affiliated county association CE dinner and

presentation through PPA. Last but not least, I had the delightful opportunity to work with Patricia Epple, CAE, CEO. I observed and participated in numerous conference calls and meetings involving committees, foundations, and Boards. One of my favorite experiences during the rotation was attending the Million Hearts™ workshop with Pat. This national initiative will rely on pharmacists to help the Million Hearts™ achieve their goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. Pat has great knowledge and awareness into the decisions required to run an organization and is very accessible to PPA members for any questions or concerns that they might have regarding the

pharmacy profession.

My rotation at PPA was a very beneficial experience. It has made me realize the importance of having a state pharmacy organization and more importantly, being an active member in that organization. From this experience, I am going to become a more active member, and I encourage other pharmacists and pharmacy students to get involved with this organization. In terms of advocacy, the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association plays a vital role in keeping members informed about current legislation and presenting new concerns to legislators in order to pass laws for pharmacy.

I encourage other pharmacy students to select to participate in this unique rotation. z

PPA 2014 Mid-Year Conference Pharmacy: The Next Generation Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Bedford, PA January 23-26, 2014 Join PPA for our Mid-Year Conference as we celebrate the future with Pharmacy: The Next Generation. The 2014 Mid-Year Conference will feature programming and ideas about where pharmacy is headed and how students and new practitioners will lead pharmacy as the next generation.

Student Posters to focus on Innovative Practice Students will present/display their posters on the theme “Focus on Innovative Pharmacy Practices,” during the Beer & Banter reception. Posters should include information about IPPE/APPE Experiences, a Special Project or Research the student did with a faculty member or preceptor and any observations/ recommendations for change or enhancement, especially for pharmacy practice.

with diabetes in an employer-based cohort for a pharmacist-managed comprehensive medication review, and to quantify the identification and intervention of drug related problems as a result of this review.

Methods: This pilot program, implemented at three locations of a regional chain community pharmacy in Pittsburgh, PA, proactively used a PQA measure to identify gaps in care in an employer-based population with diabetes. Potential participants included employees at one of the pilot locations who had filled a prescription for an oral or injectable diabetes medication.

Through reference of the employer-supplied insurance

claims as well as the pharmacy patient medication profile, these participants were evaluated to determine if they had an omission of treatment with an ACEI/ARB or statin medication. Once identified, a comprehensive medication review to identify and intervene on other drug related problems was performed. Intervention occurred by the pharmacist with the patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consent or through printed recommendations for the patient to share with their physician.

Results: In the three participating locations, 25 employees were identified as having a gap in therapy with regards to the absence of an ACEI/ARB and/or a statin. Six of the 25 individuals consented to participation in a comprehensive

medication review. Drug related problems identified included medication nonadherence, dosage too low, and need for additional therapy.

Conclusion: The PQA measure was able to identify patients with gaps in care. Pharmacists performing medication therapy reviews in this population were able to identify additional drug related problems; however low patient response to this initiative limits generalizability.
