STREET SWEEPING

• Authorized the appointment of Sergeant John Kidman as acting Chief of Police during the interim of finding a new police chief for the Borough of Camp Hill • Approved Payment of Vouchers for December 2017 in the amount of $1,130,332.99 • Approved Resolution 1-2018 outlining Collection Procedures for Outstanding Sewer Usage

Street sweeping began on Monday, April 9, 2018. Sweeping will take place the day AFTER your regular scheduled trash collection on the second and fourth weeks of the month. Please avoid placing grass clippings, tree limbs or any other debris in the street. This can cause damage to the sweeper and downtime for the operator resulting in an inability to maintain the schedule. Property owners are also asked to keep trees along the curb-line trimmed to a minimum of 12 feet above the street so that the sweeper can work close to the curb without damage to the machine.

FEBRUARY • Approved the new Towing Policy for Camp Hill Police that addresses various situations requiring towing • Approved the fee of $5000.00 to employ the Police Chief Association to assist the Borough of Camp Hill in hiring a new Chief of Police.

COMPOST FACILITY The Compost Facility is for Borough residents only. The Compost Facility is located next to the Public Works building on S 24th St. The facility reopened on Monday, April 2, 2018. The facility will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 AM to 3 PM and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The facility is closed on Sundays and Holidays.

Yard waste such as leaves, garden debris, tree limbs, bushes and plants may be dropped at the facility. Items that are not accepted include grass, topsoil, sod, tree stumps, bamboo or any form of dimensioned lumber.

Leaves maybe left in brown compost bags only-NO PLASTIC BAGS! Staff will load your truck or trailer on Mondays and Fridays from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. The borough may close the facility at any time to process/haul material. It is a citable offense to access or drop off materials at the facility when it is closed.

No person shall plant, cut, trim or remove any shade tree under the jurisdiction of the Shade Tree Commission or fasten any sign, wire, rope or other materials to, around or through any such shade tree or deposit, place, store or maintain any stone, brick, sand, concrete or other material which may impede the free passage of water, air or fertilizer to the roots of any such shade tree unless he shall first obtain a permit from the Shade Tree Commission so to do.

Application for said permit shall be available at the Borough office. b. No person shall move any building or other object on or over any public street within the Borough in such a manner as to damage or injure any shade tree or shrub in such street unless he first obtains a permit from the Shade Tree Commission so to do. c. As a condition to any permit to move any building or object on or over any public street, the Shade Tree Commission may require the applicant to furnish bond in the amount sufficient to cover any damage or

injury to any shade tree or shrubs in such street, and it may direct the route of any such moving so as to minimize damage or injury to shade trees and shrubs. Permits for trimming of trees for clearance purposes performed by or on behalf of utilities must be o

§ 187-7 BRANCHES OVER STREETS AND SIDEWALKS The Shade Tree Commission shall trim or require trimming of branches from any trees overhanging the sidewalks, streets and highways of the Borough so that the trees shall not obstruct the light from any streetlight and so that in the center of the street there shall be a clear height of 18 feet above the surface of the street; from a distance of six feet from the curb to the curb a clear height of 12 feet from the surface of the street; and over the sidewalks a clear height of eight feet.

As the warmer weather approaches the Camp Hill Police Department would like to remind all citizens to be alert for suspicious persons in the area. If you are outdoors cleaning up or doing yard work, please make sure your property is secure and your doors/windows are locked. Also do not invite any suspicious persons into your home or allow them to distract you in order for another person to enter your house.

We would also like to remind our citizens that our annual National Night Out Event will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2017, at Willow Park from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We urge everyone to come out and enjoy some good food and entertainment and get to know your police department and community members!!

Also once again we would also like to remind everyone to please make sure to remove your valuables from your vehicle and secure your vehicle, whether your vehicle is parked at your residence or any other location.

The Camp Hill Police Department urges citizens to get all bicycles registered with the Camp Hill Police Department. This is a free service and gives the police department valuable information if your bicycle is stolen or lost. The form for the license is available on our website or you can stop into the office to

obtain a form. Complete the form and return it to the Camp Hill Police Department to obtain a license number. The license number will be on a sticker which you can affix to your bicycle. Please note that the most important information on the bike registration form is the serial number of the bicycle.

This allows us to enter the bicycle into the computer network to reach out to all police departments if the bicycle would show up in another city, county or state. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office.

TICK PREVENTION SEMINAR Date: May 17, 2018 Time: Door open at 6:30 pm and seminar starts promptly at 7 pm Location: Camp Hill Borough Building The Dare 2B Tick AwareTM Program–PA Lyme Resource Network is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to implement a state-wide, community-based Lyme & tickborne disease prevention program. The goal is to improve the use of prevention strategies, reduce tick bites, and improve early diagnosis. This program uses the most current research available and standardizes prevention messages across the state. The program includes seminars, printed materials, webinars, and public service announcements.

The Recreation Commission is bringing attention to local volunteers of our Community in each newsletter. If you know volunteer you would like to recognize submit a short write-up about them to Jon Arosell at jarosell@messiah.edu.

Our volunteer spotlight this quarter is in recognition of Jessica Gutierrez • Jessica has served as the secretary for the Recreation Commission since 2009.

• She has played a key role in all of the Recreation Commission activities and events.

• These include the Kite Festival, Memorial Day Activities, Toys for Tots Parade, Halloween Parade, Bunny Eggstravaganza and various other activities when needed.

Jessica has always had a great work ethic and given her all in her volunteer efforts. Although she has appreciated the experience to serve in the community that s h e loves, it is time for her to allow another person to step in and participate.

However, we are sure that she will still continue her volunteer efforts whenever she can.

With less face to face contact these days volunteering helps you connect with the community.

CELEBRATING BIKE MONTH

May is National Bike Month, and will feature a number of opportunities for Camp Hill residents to ride for fitness, recreation, or transportation, and also to get involved with safety and advocacy activities. We will officially kickoff Bike Month on Saturday, May 5th. There will be a couple of ride options, and a ceremony for our Bicycle Friendly Community award. From 2-7 pm we will have an information table and bike safety game at Mayfair.

The May 5th ride is part of a series that will continue at 9 am the first Saturday of every month through October. There is also a Harrisburg Bicycle Club ride every Wednesday evening at 6 pm throughout the riding season. Other ride opportunities include: • May 7th morning coffee ride 10 am • May 16th Ride of Silence 6:30 pm • May 20th special “trailer ride” to the kite fest 11:45 am • May 30th ice cream ride 6 pm

All rides are relatively short and at a casual pace. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by adult. Helmet required for all riders. Rides start and end at Boro Hall unless otherwise noted on the schedule.

For those who are (or would like to be) bike commuters, Friday, May 18th is National Bike to Work Day. If you bike to, from, or through Camp Hill, please note that refreshments will be served at Cornerstone for the morning commute, starting at 6:30 AM, and at Holmes for the afternoon commute. For those traveling to or from Harrisburg, a similar way station will be set up at the Underground Bike Shop 1519 North Third Street in the City.

Bike Month will culminate with Team Camp Hill riding in Tour de Belt on the Capital Area Greenbelt. The ride is on Sunday, June 3rd, but discounted registration ends May 16th.

We learned that there are a lot of materials that are NOT recyclable and saw many that are dangerous and bad for the machinery and workers. The Penn Waste flyer we all received is pretty comprehensive but they would stress NOT TO PUT THESE ITEMS IN YOUR CURBSIDE RECYCLING: any type of medical waste, black plastics, plastics that don’t have a 1-7 within the recycling symbol, wet paper or cardboard, any boxes or paper with food contamination, shredded paper, sharp removed lids from any cans, Christmas lights, light bulbs, plastic lids, plastic bags (take them to the food store), plastic “rings” from multiple 6 or 8 pack cans or bottles, styrofoam in any size or shape and coat hangers.

CHEC meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in Prosser Hall. The next meeting is May 1. There are no meetings in June, July or August. New members are most welcome. Membership dues are $10 for students and $20 for adults with a maximum of $50 per family. LIONS CLUB

The Camp Hill Lions Club began the New Year on a high, as our annual Christmas tree sale was very successful. We are grateful for all the support from the community as this is our major source of income for community projects. Our first project for the year was to help a local gentleman who had vision problems for years and was in need of immediate surgery. In conjunction with other Lions Clubs we were able to have his needs fulfilled and he now has clear vision. Our next project was our annual Pancake Jamboree in February. Once again it was a rousing success, despite the terrible weather. In March we had a "Day of Service" for Lions. Our project was to collect items which were appropriate for children.

They were packed and will be sent to the pediatric cancer ward at Hershey Medical Center. The public was so generous with their money and we have cases of items to

This summer at the Camp Hill Borough Stadium, the Donald J Edwards Jr. Memorial Foundation is hosting a party/run! There will be both a 1 mile fun run and a 5K! The run will start at 7pm on Saturday, June 23rd followed by a community gathering with music and food trucks at the Camp Hill Borough Stadium parking lot by the basketball courts. Runners can sign up by searching the event on active.com under "Don's Dash & Dine".

Even if you are not a runner, please join for a night of fun! All proceeds from the event will be used in the education and prevention of melanoma skin cancer.

The Donald J Edwards Jr. Memorial Foundation has been working hard to raise funds for the education and prevention of melanoma skin cancer. Walking around town, you may find some new additions as the foundation will be installing additional sunscreen dispensers and sun shade across town. If you find yourself strolling through town, playing tennis, or running the track without any sunscreen, look for our bright yellow sunscreen dispensers and help yourself! Regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50%! The foundation has also installed new umbrellas at the pool and has donated funds to plant shade trees at schools. We have a continuing project of collecting used glasses and we recently packaged several thousand pairs which will be cleaned and repaired, if needed, and sent to areas where there is a need. The last shipments were sent to areas affected by hurricanes. In these projects, and all others that we do, we are grateful to our community for their support. Know that each time you give a Lion an amount of money, large or small, you are helping us to help someone in need. And, as always, we are looking for new members. THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 43

Post 43 of The American Legion in Camp Hill, PA is one of the oldest posts in the country. It will be celebrating 100 years as part of the overall celebration of the Legion’s history from 1919 to 2019.

The local post is involved with the community in many ways. It helps administer one of the largest Memorial Day events in central Pennsylvania.

Post members honor fellow veterans at funerals in the area. Students from local high schools have been recognized for their essays on patriotism.

The post is actively looking for more veterans in the Camp Hill area to be a part of this organization.

The Historical Society

Our community’s first library began in many individual classrooms, where the teachers collected their own favorite books for their students to browse and borrow. From there, the entire community gathered to bring the books to the American Legion Post’s log cabin on South 22nd Street, behind the firehouse/police/borough building, in the early 1950’s. In the 1960’s, the first purpose built library was constructed on North 30th Street, behind the Food Fair grocery store (which became the VA building).

About twenty years ago, the 1926-built Lincoln Elementary School, was demolished and replaced by today’s handsome (and well-used, wellloved) Fredricksen Library. The library entrance faces the back of the old school property. Today’s parking lot was yesterday’s playground complete with swings, and a sliding board, but no paved play area! There was a dry culvert through the play area, near the swings, lined with softball-sized sharp rocks!

This may sound like a nightmare scenario to today’s parents, but my friends and I grew up all in one piece! We also had the luxury of walking home for lunch every day!

A Message From the Director...

Dear Friends Wow what a crazy long winter we had! I truly hope when you are reading this we are truly in spring! Spring is the time of year when so many of you get outside and enjoy our parks and facilities that we have here in Camp Hill Borough. Looking forward to seeing everyone outside this season and summer.

In May, the Borough will sponsor plenty of special events, and all the details can be found in this Newsletter. The first event is the Award Winning 19th Annual Kite Festival which will be held on May 20th at Fiala Field from 12 - 4 PM. Please come out and enjoy a great day with your family and neighbors. Memorial Day weekend will start on Saturday, May 26th with the pool opening at 12 pm. We’ll finish our weekend with our 99th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Festivities on May 28th. Please read all the information in the newsletter about Memorial Day. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to check out all the special events and program information that are being offered this summer. In this newsletter are listings for all the “Box Lunch Reviews”, so be sure to check them all out.

Please remember that each Newsletter covers approximately 3 months of activities and events. As with all Camp Hill Recreation programs, registration is on a first come first served basis. Please read over all registration procedures for each program carefully, so you do not miss any important deadlines. Have you ever wanted to learn from some of Camp Hill’s finest selfless residents like: Patti Gilroy and Jon Arosell?

Well…we are looking for a new Recreation Commissioner.

This volunteer position is a way that you can give back to the community where you live and help make decisions about programs and projects supported by the Recreation Commission.

We meet 4 times per year for about an hour and provide recommendations to Borough Council about programs and projects our residents want.

If this is something you would be interested in please send a cover letter and resume to the Recreation Office by July 3, 2018.

Recreation Department RESIDENTS ON ACTIVE MILITARY DUTY We would like to compile a list of Camp Hill Borough residents who are on active military duty. If you know someone, please call Jill Williamson at 761-1848 and let her know their name, military branch, and where they’re stationed. Jill would also like anyone who had called her in the past to please call again to update the service person’s location and if they are still serving.

ACCESS TO SIEBERT PARK STADIUM If you are interested in having access to utilize the stadium when it is not being used for an event, you need to stop by the Borough Office and fill out an application. One application per family. To enter the stadium access the Siebert Park Stadium near the Athletic House. Just swipe your card and push on the access gate. It will turn to let one person enter. If you lose your card, you need to notify the Borough immediately, so we can deactivate your card. Replacement cards, are $5.00 each. You can view the stadium calendar on our website under Recreation/ Facilities to see when it is occupied.

PURCHASE A BRICK FOR THE LION’S DEN If you have not yet purchased a brick at Siebert Park, there is still time. Bricks will continue to be sold even though The Lion’s Den is complete. The funds that are collected now will go towards the up keep of the parks.

If you are interested in purchasing a brick for yourself or a loved one, please go to our site for a brick form and it can be dropped off with payment to the Recreation Office.

UPCOMING EVENTS 19TH ANNUAL KITE FESTIVAL Sunday, May 20 Camp Hill Recreation and the Keystone Kiters are teaming up again for the Annual Kite Festival. This year it will be held on Sunday, May 20th, from 12 - 4 pm at Fiala Field.

The Keystone Kiters will demonstrate their different kites and all children and adults will be able to make a kite with our help. So mark your calendar and come out and enjoy a relaxing and FREE afternoon with your family.

Become chemists as we get elbow deep in chemistry. Become engineers as we explore some marvelous machines and discover how they make work easier and more fun! Camp Hill Recreation, in conjunction with the Camp Hill High School Boys Basketball program, will be offering three Boys Basketball Camps this summer. The camps will be run by Scott Barrows, Camp Hill High School Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach and his coaching staff, along with several of the High School players.

Lions Future Stars Camp will be offered to boys entering 4th grade through boys entering 9th grade. This camp will include skill development, competitive team games, individual contests, and sportsmanship.

Camp Hill Recreation will be offering a Field Hockey Camp and it will be run by Julie Colestock and Ashley Yeager with the assistance of the Camp Hill HS Field Hockey Staff. During the camp the players will work on skills and small group stations and have contests/games. All participants will receive a shirt, if registered by July 13th. Field Hockey Sticks will be available for use at camp and if you are interested in buying a stick reach out to Julie Colestock at jcolestock@camphillsd.k12.pa.us. Elite Lion Basketball Training will be offered to boys entering 7th through boys entering 9th grade. This is a concentrated skills camp for the serious basketball player to hone his individual abilities and improve agility through focused basketball-specific training.

CAMP HILL YOUTH WRESTLING CAMP

Little Lions Basketball Camp will be offered to boys entering K through boys entering 3rd grade. This camp will emphasize fun and provide age appropriate instruction highlighting skills and games to get the boys excited about basketball.

Youth wrestling camp will be directed by Coach Jones and the rest of the wrestling coaching staff. Camp will consist each evening of wrestling drills and skills in a fun competitive teaching style. Opportunities for live wrestling and tournament style wrestling will exist most days. All experience levels from never having wrestled before to any level of experience are encouraged to attend.

Wrestling shoes and headgears are encouraged but not required. Coach Gallaher would love for anyone who has never wrestled before to give this a try. All participants will receive a shirt, if registered by July 1.

Instructor: Dave Juktus Camp Hill Recreation will be offering two different track camps held at Siebert Park Stadium. This is a great introduction to track where children will learn about various running and jumping events including the 100m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, relays, running long

jump, triple jump, and the standing long jump. The camp will wrap up with a mini track meet to culminate the week.

Participants will need comfortable clothing to move in such as shorts and a t-shirt as well as a full water bottle for each camp day.

SOCCER CAMP Instructor: HS Coach Justin Sheaffer Introduce your child to the beautiful game.

Current players, sharpen your skills. Players will train with and learn from the State Championship team and the Camp Hill High School Boys Coach, Justin Sheaffer.

Sessions are for both boys and girls and are designed to teach skills through fun drills and games. Advanced players may be asked to move up an age group after the first session.

Each player will receive a Camp T-shirt, no guarantee of shirt after May 1st registration.

Players should wear cleats (or sneakers) and shin guards, bring a ball, and bring water to the camp. Parents are welcome to stay and watch the sessions.

2018 TENNIS MEMBERSHIP Only Camp Hill Borough residents, property owners and business owners are eligible to purchase a tennis membership. The courts are accessible with your Siebert Park stadium access card. Access cards are available at the Borough Administrative Office.

Membership is effective for the calendar year: January through December. Fees are not prorated; early registration is strongly recommended.

Memberships are activated weekly, on Fridays. Please plan your registration accordingly.

Parking on the grass near the tennis courts is prohibited. • Members are required to close the security gate when entering and leaving the courts.

When members leave the courts, their guests must depart as well. Tennis court users must produce photo identification and access card when requested by the Police Department or Borough Staff.

For all sessions greater than $50, a refund will be granted according to this schedule:

POOL PASS 2018 TO PURCHASE A POOL MEMBERSHIP Camp Hill Borough offers pool memberships through the Active Network program.

There is no longer a paper application.

To purchase a pool membership, visit camphillborough.com. There are two options to proceed. Under the “I Want To” section (at the bottom of the screen), click “Purchase a pool membership”. Or, select the Recreation Department and click the large green button in the right-hand corner labeled “Register for Activities”. Both steps will bring you to the same screen. If you have an ActiveNet account established, click the blue “Sign In” button. Otherwise, click “Create an Account” under the blue button.

When creating an account, please completely spell out your address. Add all household members five years of age and older to the account. If you have a nanny, this person must be added to the account using the following guidelines. Use the word “Nanny” for the first name and your last name for the last name. For example, the nanny for the Smith family would be Nanny Smith. For the nanny’s address, use your address. For the

nanny’s date of birth, choose a date that keeps the age under twenty-three years (23) old, for example 1/1/2000. These guidelines are necessary so you are not overcharged for your membership. If you need clarification, please call the Borough Office.

Once your account is established, you may proceed and purchase the pool membership that best suits your household. Active Network only accepts credit or debit card payments. For those who wish to pay by cash or check, you must still visit the Borough Office; Borough staff will assist you in completing your transaction. For those interested in purchasing the grandparent membership (5-visit card), you must visit the Borough Office to complete your transaction.

Once your membership is purchased, you may go to the pool. When your pool membership cards are created (usually within 1 or 2 days), you may ask for them at the pool front desk. Each person, with the exception of a nanny, will have their photograph taken at the pool front desk. Returning members will use cards issued to them last season.

This is the time of year when we like to pause and thank all of those who make a difference in our children’s lives every day with their time and donations to The Lion Foundation. Think of all the things that might not happen in our schools without such support!

This gratitude extends to our own board members. I would like to thank Jim Hepfer and John Kennedy for their outstanding service to The Lion Foundation’s board and to the Camp Hill schools. JK served as president for seven years, and Jim, a longtime board member, served as a Chair of the Finance Committee for five years.

I am glad that both will continue to volunteer as Emeritus Board Members.

WINTER CELEBRATION A BIG SUCCESS This year's Winter Celebration, held at the Camp Hill Radisson, raised more than $83,300 thanks to a matching challenge offered by The Lion Foundation Board and its emeritus members. Proceeds from this annual event help fund academic, athletic and cultural programs in Camp Hill schools that are not funded by taxpayer dollars.

We would not be able to pull of such a successful event without a lot of support. HONOR OUR ELDERS Your donations to The Lion Foundation fund programs like the awardwinning Honor Our Elders, an artistic endeavor that begins with 3rd through 5th grade students interviewing elders in their families and community. With assistance from artists in residence—Two of a Kind—students work to transform these stories into songs, many which were recently showcased during a thoughtful and inspiring concert held in early April.

GIRLS SOFTBALL HAS A SCOREBOARD! Talk about teamwork! Working together, The Lion Foundation, the Camp Hill Athletic Booster Club, the Camp Hill Girls Softball League and Guys Night Out raised approximately $13,000 to install a scoreboard at the Hoover softball field. The scoreboard will be used for the high school girls program as well as the Camp Hill youth softball program. Until now, the girls did not have a scoreboard. Thanks to all who donated!

Each year, there are students and families in our Camp Hill community struggling to make ends meet. Kids don’t have enough food, don’t have winter coats and cannot afford fees to participate in activities that are available to others.

To make a difference, the Camp Hill Middle School High School Association and Camp Hill Elementary PTO are joining forces with The Lion Foundation, school principals and students to form this new initiative which supports a host of needs including food, field trip and camp fees, winter coats and clothing, hygiene supplies, and other items so every student has the tools to be future leaders of tomorrow.

So far, more than $3,200 has been raised for the Earl Besch Project thanks to generous donations, a Hersheypark ticket fundraiser, and a hygiene/donation drive held during the spring musical. High School Student Council members will also be holding a bake sale at the Camp Hill Memorial Day Celebration at Willow Park selling baked goods and also dog treats. (Look for them!)

Earl Besch (1926-2015) was a long-time resident of Camp Hill Borough known for his generosity to others. Earl would regularly reach out to the schools to see if there were families in need. He would offer to buy a bike, a winter coat, pay for camp enrollment or to purchase a Christmas present. In 2015, his family established a memorial fund in his name to continue his legacy of caring. The Earl Besch Fund at The Lion Foundation provides others an opportunity to help those less fortunate in our community through donations to this fund established in his name.

In mid-March, I had the privilege of attending an Education Congress and listening to a powerful presentation by Jamie Vollmer, entitled Schools Cannot Do This Alone: Student Success in an Age of Rising Expectations. Jamie Vollmer J.D., is president of Vollmer, Inc., author, lecturer, writer and producer of the video series The Great Conversation. His book , Schools Cannot Do It Alone, tells the provocative stor y of a businessman’s journey through the land of public education, and his transformation from critic to award-winning advocate of America’s Public Schools.

One of the most powerful messages Mr. Vollmer delivered during his presentation was, “ This, right now, is Public Education’s most hopeful time.” As I reflected on his message and his Pre-Requisites of progress, all of which start with the word Community: Community Understanding, Community Trust, Community Permission, Community Support, I was ver y much reminded of our Camp Hill Community. I was reminded that our long-standing District Vision Statement has Community Strength in the center and at its core. I was reminded that in a time when public education has become the target of criticism by so many individuals and groups, that The Camp Hill School District has and will always be the cornerstone of our community. I was reminded that despite the fiscal challenges we face, we are so incredibly fortunate that our academic, athletic, arts and drama programs take center stage and continue to prove their value to our children, our families and the entire community. I was reminded that our community members, regardless of whether or not they currently have children attending our schools, continually provide us with feedback that expresses support, joy, and appreciation for how our schools are beacons for bringing the entire community together. I was reminded of the fact that we have a sense of belonging in the Camp Hill School District that is not only something special, it is second to none.

Public schools are places where children from all socio-economic backgrounds are able to learn, work and play together ever y day as they grow up and matriculate through the system. Public schools provide our children in Camp Hill and across the nation a unique opportunity to see and experience the value of diversity. Public schools strengthen our communities. Camp Hill is a true testament to that fact. The challenge for all of us moving for ward is to accept the charge to support and promote what is good about public education. We must share, widely and often, what our schools are able to provide for so many children and communities across the commonwealth and the nation. I welcome all of you to join me in this incredibly important effort.

CAMP HILL’S MINI-THON RAISES $82,550 TO CONQUER CHILDHOOD CANCER

Camp Hill students have amazed us once again by raising $82,550.73 for the 2018 Mini-THON. Thank you to ever yone who supported our mission: Mini-THON’s Leadership team, advisors, students, teachers, staff, administration, volunteers, donors, and the Camp Hill community.

The student leadership team held smaller events and fundraisers throughout the year including Mini Mini-THON’s at Hoover and Eisenhower which were huge successes. This culminated in Camp Hill’s 3rd annual Mini-THON which took place from 7 p.m. on Februar y 24th to 7 a.m. on Februar y 25th.

At this year ’s event, 215 High School students participated, up from 170 last year. Additionally, 115 Middle School students joined in the event for an hour on Saturday night. More than 25 Middle School and High School girls donated their hair to Wigs for Kids, donating approximately 216 inches of hair. Sean Bartolucci and Lily Jordan (2 of our Four Diamonds students), and Ashlyn ( a Four Diamonds 4th grader) attended the event and inspired us all night long!

The stduent leadership team worked all year long and without them, this event isn’t possible. NEWS AROUND THE DISTRICT: • In Januar y, students from Hoover Elementar y dressed up to participate in Fine Dining Day. • Middle and High School students entered in the 2018 South Central PA Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. After over 2,500 entries, 36 Camp Hill students won awards.

Congratulations to Ed Hans, Noah Kaplaniak , Mia Pertschi, and Micah Springer who had their artwork hung in the State Museum of Harrisburg.

• Students from Hoover Elementar y participated in a SOUPER Bowl Challenge where they collected 596 cans in one week to help famillies in Camp Hill.

• In Februar y, Eisenhower Elementar y students participated in a Mini-mini THON which was a huge success. They raised $6185.32 for the Four Diamonds fund.

• Hoover and Eisenhower Elementar y students were treated to an assembly with Jonathan Sprout who shared his “American Heroes” concert. Thanks to CHEPTO for support.

• Camp Hill schools celebrated Read Across America Week from Feb. 26 - Mar. 2.

• On March 14th, the Boys Soccer team was honored at the state capitol by Representative Greg Rothman for winning state championships in the fall.

• In March, 4th & 8th grade students participated in Career Days where they heard from representatives of various industries.

• On March 22nd, 6th grade students presented their experiments and lab reports at the 6th Grade Science Fair.

• Camp Hill High School held it’s 2nd Annual International Fair in April.

HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH STUDENTS EXPERIENCE QUEBEC CITY

In Februar y, 28 high school French students traveled to Quebec City in Canada to apply their French speaking skills and experience the culture and histor y of the area first-hand. Students visited a HuronWendat village, explored underground tunnels at Laval University, learned what life was like as a soldier living in a Martello tower, learned how maple syrup is made, and enjoyed traditional FrenchCanadian food. Other highlights included a snowshoeing excursion, tubing, tobogganing, cross countr y skiing, and ice skating. Students also had the unique opportunity to drive their own dog sled.

Thanks to the planning efforts of French teacher Annabelle Buehrle, the trip was a successful and enjoyable experience.

A DAY OF ACTIVITIES SHOW STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF FINANCIAL LITERACY

On March 6th, CHHS juniors and seniors attended Junior Achievement’s Real Life Financial Literacy program. The goal of the program is to motivate students to understand the key issues surrounding personal finance and the importance of getting good advice as you make these decisions. During the day-long event, students participated in a series of activities and interacted with business volunteers who shared their financial skills and backgrounds. By the end of the day, students gained valuable information and resources to help develop financial literacy skills.

HONOR OUR ELDERS PROJECT CONCLUDES WITH A SPECIAL CONCERT

Eisenhower Elementar y students performed a concert on April 5th after spending the year inter viewing, stor y writing, and composing songs. The full house included grandparents, neighbors and community members as well as students and their families. This was the culminating event of the “Honor Our Elders” Project, a multidisciplinar y approach to learning.

The project involved students in grades 3-5 and started in the fall with students conducting inter views of elder relatives and community members. Following the inter views, students wrote narratives and illustrated their stories to create a keepsake for themselves and their inter viewee. Music classes worked with Mrs. Dixon and guest artists David and Jenny Heitler-Klevans, aka Two of a Kind, to write a class song inspired by an inter viewee’s life experiences. Students performed their original songs at the concert where they were joined by Two of a Kind.

The stories and songs ranged from serious (growing up in Greece during WWII) to light-hearted (flying hot air balloons). Guests at the concert, which included many of the inter viewees, enjoyed video excerpts of the inter views and a reception honoring the elders involved.

The project was funded by the Lion Foundation with additional support from the Elementar y Parent Teacher Organization. Congratulations to Mrs. Dixon, the students, staff, and a wonderful community for making this project an enriching tradition for Camp Hill!

Camp Hill Girls Basketball Team Wins 3rd Straight District Title

On Tuesday, February 27th, the Girls Basketball Team won the District 3 Class AA Championship game against Steel-High. This is the team’s third consecutive win in the district final. Camp Hill scored 69 points which is the third highest score in a District 3 AA Championship game. The team also made District 3 history with the largest differential ever of 44 points in a championship game. Congratulations to the Lady Lions!

99TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY PARADE, CEREMONY AND FESTIVITIES American Legion Post #43 of Camp Hill and the Borough of Camp Hill will sponsor the 99th Annual Memorial Day Parade to be held on Monday, May 28, 2018. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at 19th and Market Street, proceeds west along Market Street to N. 24th Street and then continues down Walnut Street to the Camp Hill Cemetery behind the Camp Hill Fire Department. The parade will feature a variety of participants including: Camp Hill American Legion Post #43, Lawnton American Legion Post #998 Color Guard, Camp Hill Marching Band, Camp Hill Borough Council and School Board Members. Numerous civic organizations will also participate, including Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scout Troops, and various youth groups. Fire Companies from many surrounding communities will exhibit their equipment and join in the parade.

Please join us in welcoming Lieutenant Colonel Roger N. Thomas as this years speaker.

Lt. Colonel Thomas reports to Marine Reserve Headquarters in New Orleans, Louisiana where he currently holds the billets of the Assistant Chief of Staff G-2 Intelligence Officer for Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces Northern Command.

Lt. Colonel Thomas graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Resource Management from Penn State University in 1992. He enlisted in 1995 and graduated from MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina in February 1996. He was accepted into the Enlisted Commissioning Program and reported

to Officer Candidate School in the fall of 1997 and received his commission in December of the same year.

Lt. Colonel Thomasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; training and assignments have taken him to several locations both stateside and abroad including the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Japan, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lt Col Thomas is married to Joy Marie Barnes, Director of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, New Orleans office. They have three children Emily, Samuel and Maya. They reside in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. We look forward to hearing his patriotic message.

Also as part of the ceremony will be student speaker Alex Drda, a senior at Camp Hill High School. The Drum Majors Casey Oberdick and Samantha Buck. Taps and Echo will be performed by Tim Carey and Adeline Mueller.

After the ceremony, all are welcome to come to the festivities which will be take place in Willow Park. During the festivities there will be an air ride and games for the kids to play. We will also have various organizations and vendors selling food and items. The High School Jazz Band will perform for us at 1 p.m. We hope to see you all there.
