4 Stop for sweet treats
all across the park. Fresh S’mores cooked over a fire, deep fried candy bars, and gigantic whoopie pies — Hersheypark has endless food choices to satisfy the sweet tooth in all of us.
5 Hersheypark
is so much more than just a summertime destination. In April, preview the coming summer fun at Springtime in the Park. During the Halloween season, Hersheypark is open for a fantastic family-friendly Hersheypark in the Dark event. MidNovember through the end of December, Hersheypark transforms into a magical Christmas Candylane, which is my favorite season of all.

1 Color Run/Glow Run
(May/June) OK, 5Ks are a dime a dozen and a bit cliché but these two rise above the rest. That’s why I had to settle on a tie. The Color RunTM is so big, it had to be split into two days. It’s more like a party than a run! The Glow Run takes you along the Susquehanna River after dark with runners all lit up. Nothing else like it.
2 Tour de Chocolate Town
(September) If you’d rather bike than run, this is perfect for you! Four courses to choose from: 17.5 miles up to the Century ride. You get to glide thru Hersheypark but you see lots more of beauti ful Central PA during one of the best times of the year.
3 Harrisburg Mile
(July) What? Only a mile? I can do that. Yes, you can too. And you’ll have a good time doing it at this family friendly event held on Front Street in Harrisburg. It has something to offer everyone, from your youngest kids to your serious miler. But before you think it’s a breeze, remember it is held in the hottest part of the summer.
4 Hershey Half Marathon
(October) I think this is the best running event. It is centered in Hershey, so you get all the sights and sounds of The Sweetest Place On Earth. Plus, it’s a long enough race to challenge the hard core runner but achievable for the weekend warrior.
5 Harrisburg Marathon
(November) Harrisburg might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of marathon cities, but this Boston Marathon qualifier is a big time event in a beautiful setting with so much to offer. It is a challenging course in terms of diverse topography. This 26.2 mile trek is all the sweat and tears of a marathon without all the big city pressure and hassle!

1 Fine Dining on the River.
At dusk, linger over dinner and cocktails as the sun turns the water a fiery red then melts into the horizon. Even in winter, Char’s Tracy Mansion offers great views and unique spaces, all tucked within an historic riverfront mansion.
2 Midstate Mexican.
Herby’s El Mexicano, an oasis of color, statues and sombreros in the wonderfully out-ofplace village of Bressler. Owner Maria Marroquin cooks up tasty Mexican fare, and the Herby’s Margarita is worth the splurge to wash it down. You might need a reliable GPS, but Herby’s is worth the hunt.
3
Culinary Art. Over the past year, Midtown Harrisburg
has undergone a renaissance, and no place better exemplifies this remarkable comeback than The Millworks, a farm-to-table restaurant surrounded by artist studios. Owner Josh Kesler renovated an abandoned lumber mill, and the result is a spectacular space where you can explore dishes made exclusively from local ingredients then explore the creations of local artists.
4 Beef & Bets.
Final Cut Steakhouse at Hollywood Casino at Penn National shows that a good meal can be just as satisfying as a hot blackjack hand. After dinner, it’s time to test your chances on the casino floor. Even if Lady Luck lets you down, you’ll leave Grantville with memories of a great dinner.

1 Chambourcin
SPRING GATE VINEYARD, HARRISBURG.
This dry red wine shows off the finesse of one of the region’s newest wineries. Chambourcin is one of the red grapes that excel in this region, pairing well with many foods. Spring Gate’s wine list is lengthy and diverse, and it’s also making and selling ciders and craft beers. It’s one of the region’s coziest spots to visit and relax.
2 Riesling
THE VINEYARD AND BREWERY AT HERSHEY, MIDDLETOWN. This white wine is made in a dry style,
sporting the kind of balance and crispness that has won over so many fans. And you can’t go wrong with either Chardonnay — Oaked of Unoaked — or the vineyard’s dry red blend called Firefly. They are here, too, as are a handful of beers and ciders.
3 Armstrong Red
ARMSTRONG VALLEY WINERY, HALIFAX. When the PA Wine Society held its annual
competition of state wines in January, this dry red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir was one of the finalists. And it’s one of a number of wines worth tasting, ranging from dry to sweet to fruit. About a 20-minute ride north of Harrisburg, the winery is worth visiting just to explore the historic property.
4 Tröegs Perpetual IPA
TRÖEGS BREWING COMPANY, HERSHEY. There are a number of Troegs’ beers on
beeradvocate.com’s Top 100 list for Pennsylvania, including this year-round offering. An American Double / Imperial IPA, it’s lauded for its golden color, piney aroma, and crisp mouthfeel. All seem to agree that it goes down nice and easy. If you’re in the area, Troegs is a must-see destination for those who love beer.

5 Volks Weizenbock
APPALACHIAN BREWING COMPANY, HARRISBURG. One of the region’s biggest
producers makes several bocks, and this one has built a fan following. Start with the ruby color, an aroma of strong malt and yeast, and a taste that’s tangy, fruity and spicy. Savor this brew as it warms in your grip. The brewery’s flagship location remains in a 100-plus-yearold building on North Cameron Street.

Hilton Harrisburg
THE PERFECT STAY It IS possible to have the best of both worlds! Whether you’re traveling for business or fun in the capital city or our town built on chocolate, you’ll find accommodations for every need and want, and at every budget. Enjoy the cosmopolitan convenience of a city hotel or the family fun of a sweet retreat in Hershey and make the most of your time here.
14
1 Location, location, location.
There’s no mystery that you will pay more for a hotel when it’s positioned in close proximity to landmarks, the bustling city center, and transportation hubs like airports and train stations. There’s nothing wrong with paying for convenience, but consider the value of a 10-minute drive versus a 10-minute walk if you’re looking to save a few bucks.
2 Shooting for the stars.
Star ratings do not equal better service, but rather differentiate the hotel’s amenities. These ratings are often higher due to a hotel having a restaurant, pool, gym, or business center. If you’re not planning to work out or host a business meeting during your visit, a 2 or 3 star hotel could easily meet your needs. Regardless of the rating, you should always expect good service and a tidy room.
3 Bigger isn’t always better.
If you have a big brand hotel you frequent, there’s no reason you can’t rack up your loyalty rewards points and stay there when ever you travel. However, you may also want to consider independent boutique hotels. Many top-tier hotels are unique to their destination and integrate the local cuisine, artistry, and hospitality you may not otherwise experience from a well-established hotel chain.
4 There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
Most of us learned this concept in Economics class, but there is such a thing as a free breakfast when it comes to booking a hotel! Always be on the lookout for free inclusions, but not just breakfast. Many hotels now offer free Wi-Fi, parking and shuttle services. When comparing hotels, consider the total savings you could realize over the duration of your trip before you book.
SHAWN’S TOP 5 HOTEL BOOKING TIPS Shawn Kaup is the Director of Marketing & Public Relations at AAA Central PA. With more than 17 years of experience, he serves as the senior executive presiding over business line marketing support, community outreach and media relations. He is a graduate of Penn State University with both an MBA and B.S. in Marketing.
5 You never know until you try.
When you arrive at check-in, don’t be afraid to ask for a little something extra. If you’re staying in a city with a beautiful skyline ask for a room with a view, or if you’re enjoying some down time ask for a room located near the pool or restaurant. You may be surprised at the little free or low-cost upgrades a hotel will offer if you simply ask. You can’t always get what you want, but it’s always worth asking.
