As we roll into 2017, TANY has brought the association back to the members. Not that we ever actually took it away from the members; the association was built by members and will always be driven by membership needs. The level of association activity within each of the five regions has declined over the years, resulting in less participation in association events. With that in mind, the TANY Board of Directors has set a goal for 2017 to let the association’s regions take the wheel in developing programs designed to meet the needs of the membership. In January, each of the association’s five regions met to begin planning activities for 2017. At each of these meetings, the regions set a monthly or bi-monthly schedule of planning meetings for the year in order to ensure the region remains active. TANY has staff participate in every regional meeting to coordinate activities amongst the regions and provide any needed support from the association. The regional meetings are open to all members of the association and members are encouraged to participate. Already this year several events have been added to the TANY calendar of events and many more are being planned (make sure you review the calendar in each week’s Friday Final). In 2017 each region will host Touch-a-Truck events, job fairs, training and educational opportunities as well as social activities. Whether you are interested in public outreach events, golf, social activities or educational events, the regions will have something for you! In addition to organizing events, the regional planning meetings will also serve as an opportunity for members to network, share best practices and discuss issues of concern in which the association may need to get involved. TANY members drive the association. The mission of TANY is to be “The Voice of Trucking”, and it is the membership who provide that voice. The regional meetings are designed to ensure that every member has the ability to participate in the association, both through attending events and through discussing areas of concern or opportunity. I sincerely hope all TANY members consider participating in as many of the regional meetings as you can. Printed below is the schedule of regional meetings, as well as a list of counties in each region so members know which region they are a part of. For additional information please feel free to contact the TANY office. Central Region: Meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Meetings will alternate between in-person meetings and conference calls. Includes the counties of Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Otsego, St. Lawrence, Tioga, and Tompkins. President’s Message continued Eastern Region: Meets the 1st Tuesday of every month. Includes the counties of Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Orange, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Warren, Washington and Ulster. Genesee Region: Meets the 2nd Thursday of every month. Includes the counties of Allegany, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates. Metro Region: Meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Meetings will alternate between in-person meetings and conference calls. Includes the counties of Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York,

Putnam, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Queens and Westchester. Western Region: Meets the 3rd Thursday of every other month. Includes the counties of Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming. It’s going to be an exciting 2017 with a lot of opportunities for members to get involved! All of us at TANY look forward to continuing to work for you! Be safe, Kendra L. Hems TANY President

TANY’S STRATEGIC PLAN: WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU

During the TANY Annual Conference and Membership Meeting in September, association president Kendra Hems unveiled the Trucking Association of New York’s updated strategic plan, which was the result of several months of collaboration by TANY staff and the board of directors. Hems also included some of the highlights of the plan in TANY’s 2016 Yearbook edition of Milepost. But, what does it mean to you, the TANY member? To start, the plan is intended to be a living document, constantly reviewed and updated as needed. In fact, even before its completion, components of the plan were already implemented, including the launch of the association’s new website and member portal, and the transition from the New York State Motor Truck Association to the Trucking Association of New York. At the core of the strategic plan is a renewed focus on the key priorities of the 8

association. While every strategic plan tends to call for the same renewed focus on these priorities, the current strategic plan includes specifics on how these functions are going to be improved.

benefits the membership. To that end, the association’s strategic plan focuses on the following:

First and always foremost, the association’s top priority is membership. Whether growing the membership or working to retain the valuable members it already has, the driving force of the association is ensuring that everything it does in some manner

In part, through the enhanced use of the Trucking Moves America Forward Image Campaign, the association’s strategy to enhance its advocacy efforts is to do a better job of telling its story to the legislature and to the public. This will be accomplished through a variety

www.nytrucks.org • Trucking Association of New York

Advocacy

of mechanisms, including constant communication with state and federal legislators, invitations for legislators to visit member facilities, invitations for legislators to attend association events, publication of safety achievements of member companies and individuals, and building upon the success of the Trucking Moves New York: Day at the Capitol and the Call on Washington programs. This industry has a great story to tell – the association will ensure it is doing its part to tell it, and hopes that members will do the same!

Programs & Services The association plans to market itself as the back office for its members. The focus will be on adding new programs and services that will not only save members money, but will help to alleviate many of the administrative burdens associated with compliance, registration and licensing. The goal is to let TANY members focus on running their company, while the association handles many of the day-to-day tasks that tend to bog people down.

Safety Maintenance Management Council Safety will always be a priority for the association. Giving its members the tools they need to maintain a culture of safety within their own companies will be a significant focus of the SMMC. Through increased education and training programs and networking opportunities, the SMMC intends to facilitate the sharing of ideas and best practices amongst its members. The SMMC will become a vital resource to the association by providing valuable information on the potential impact, good or bad, of proposed safety regulations or legislation. And the SMMC intends to spread the word that safety is everyone’s responsibility, not just the trucking industry’s. Watch for an increase in the Share-the-Road programs and Safety Breaks in the near future!

Communications The association has heard loud and clear that one of the most valuable benefits of being a member of TANY

is the information it provides to the membership on a timely and frequent basis. TANY will continue to ensure that members are always up to date through the use of the Friday Final, but will also develop a much more robust social media presence. New ways for the association to communicate with the membership, as well as for members to communicate with each other on a much more frequent basis, are afoot. Stay tuned! As mentioned earlier, the strategic plan is intended to be a living document. This positions the association to make modifications to meet the evolving needs of the TANY membership, and provide the best service possible to its members. This also means that the feedback received from the membership on the strategic plan, can be used to further tailor the plan. The association thrives when it receives feedback from its members and all TANY members are encouraged to voice their opinions to the association, so it can continue to serve you.

The Golub Corporation has participated in this event since its inception and contributes to hundreds of local charities throughout the year.

Superior Plus Energy Services As reported to TANY members last summer, Ray Napoleon of Superior Plus Energy Services, passed away on June 28, 2016. While Ray only worked for Superior Plus for a little more than a year, both he and his father spent their entire lives in the trucking industry. In his short time at Superior Plus he left an indelible mark on many employees. Superior Plus decided to honor Ray by running a transport in the Palmyra area (Ray’s hometown) with graphics in Ray’s memory. This is the first time that Superior Plus has dedicated a truck in someone’s memory and proudly did so for Ray.

UPS Freight’s Charlton Paul, Jr. In January, Charlton Paul, Jr. of UPS Freight, from Chester, NY was named to the American Trucking Associations’ 2017-2018 America’s Road Team, an elite group of professionals who serve as trucking industry ambassadors. He was one of 20 professional drivers selected from 33 finalists named at the end of 2016 for the prestigious designation. To be considered as a Road Team Captain, drivers compile millions of accident-free miles, serve hundreds of hours in their communities and articulate the passion they have for their careers as truck drivers. America’s Road Team was established in 1986 as an outreach initiative designed to introduce the motoring public, lawmakers and the media to the trucking industry. Since its inception, America’s Road Team has impressed upon millions of drivers the trucking industry’s safety record, essentiality, and professionalism. 2017 NYS Truck Safety and Education Symposium & Safety Exhibition

MOVING THE INDUSTRY FORWARD

Every spring, trucking industry professionals from throughout New York gather in the Capital District for the New York State Truck Safety and Education Symposium. The two-day event brings together hundreds of people from trucking’s private sector, with the industry’s leading experts and government regulators to discuss the most pressing issues facing trucking today. The event will be held April 4-5, 2017 in Saratoga Springs, NY. This year’s event, Moving the Industry Forward, is aimed at helping attendees adapt to current technologies, and embrace what is new and upcoming, so they can work effectively and efficiently in today’s industry. Representatives from state and federal agencies will discuss topics including what they are looking for during an audit, the proper procedure to file a DataQ, the status of oversize/ overweight permits, and what to expect in the coming months and years from a regulatory perspective, including the implementation of the ELD rule.

Additionally, representatives from law enforcement will discuss the differences in AOBRDs and ELDs and explain what is acceptable as roadside proof, as well as take part in the popular Enforcement Roundtable, providing an open-format question and answer session for attendees. Experts from the private sector will also be focused on what is new and upcoming, including new minimum wage rules, truck platooning and autonomous vehicles, and how to implement company policies which are more stringent than the minimum required by law. As always, the event’s first day will feature two hours dedicated to the Safety Exhibition, enabling hundreds of attendees to learn about the products and services offered by dozens of vendors on site, while the second day will include an Agency Resource Fair, giving one-on-one time to discuss specific issues or questions attendees have with a variety of state and federal agencies.

Sponsor a Member Program Update Help spread the word that it pays to be a member of “The Voice of Trucking” Since re-launching the Sponsor a Member Program in late 2015, the Trucking Association of New York has seen a significant increase in the number of members joining the association, who are sponsored by our current members. TANY has often said that its best recruiters are current members, since they know the benefits of the association first-hand, and 2016 proved it! At the TANY 49th Annual Conference & Membership Meeting in September, association president Kendra Hems recognized those member companies who have gone out of their way to bring new members to the association through the Sponsor a Member Program. At the time of the event, the association had added 26 new members since its inception. O&K Truck Repairs, Ltd. and Ryder Truck Rental were both recognized for bringing in three sponsored members each, between January and September. However, O&K Truck Repairs and Ryder Truck Rental were not the only member-advocates who helped bring in new members last year. In fact, the program took-off during 2016 with the addition of 24 new members, sponsored by 17 different companies. By the end of 2016, O&K Truck Repairs and Ryder Truck Rental had been joined by Sprague Operating Resources, LLC, in a three-way tie for the most sponsored companies for the year. The Sponsor a Member Program is proving to be a very successful tool in not just recruiting new members, but retaining them. TANY salutes the following companies who have helped make the association stronger by spreading the word that it pays to be a member of “The Voice of Trucking” and for lending their time and efforts to sponsorship. 18

Spotlight MARK GIUFFRE Vice President of State Government Affairs UPS East Region • New York, NY

What is your current hometown? I live in Louisville, KY, now. I was born and raised in West Islip, NY. What was your first job? When I was about 12, I was a delivery boy for the Daily News and Newsday when they were morning and evening papers so I had a route before and after school. I was always the first one up in the morning, and made sure I made a pot of coffee for my parents. The job really helped me, too because I had a younger brother and I always got to the toy in the cereal box before him. What was your first car? My first car was a 1973 Ford Mustang Fastback. What is your educational background? I graduated from Marist College with a degree in Fashion Design and a minor in Communications. Do you have any favorite sports teams, hobbies or past-times? I’m a fan of the New York Yankees, Knicks and Rangers. I also like golf and racquetball, and projects that involve building. I’ve always loved Habitat for Humanity projects. I used to help my dad with projects as a kid and as an adult, I appreciate the sense of accomplishment they bring. In our daily jobs, we’re never really done with 24/7 access and legislation “in the works.” Building something has a start and finish and you get to stop and look back and say, ”I did

that” and feel like you’ve accomplished something. What about a favorite food? Nana’s homemade Gnocchi pasta. Where is the farthest place you’ve traveled? In 2008, the UPS Public Affairs team traveled to Beijing, China. About 70 of us spent 2 weeks there. We built a schoolhouse, including a computer lab, in a small village 3 hours outside Beijing as a way to demonstrate that we care about all the communities we serve. The village we were in didn’t have a lot of UPS business, but we felt it important to show we care about the infrastructure and countries we serve as a whole. We’ve done several of these projects around the world, including schools and health care clinics. We also had the opportunity to hold a meeting on the Great Wall. That was amazing. If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go and why? I’d go to the Holy Land. I’ve read the bible 5 or 6 times all the way through and I’ve always wanted to see where all the history took place. It’s difficult to think of visiting, though with the significant security concerns in that region. Do you have a gadget you can’t live without? My iPhone.

What is your current job? I work with state legislators on issues that impact UPS. What do you like most about your job? Building relationships and representing UPS, because I’m proud of what we represent. I love the people I work with and the values and integrity of the company. It’s always about working together as a team and bringing each other up. If someone is struggling, there are always 3 or 4 people there to help pick you up and make sure you thrive. What do you find most challenging about your job? Dealing with legislators and the legislative process. How many employees are in the company? 435,000. What do you like to do in your spare time? Right out of college, I got a job working at Gucci in New York. I wanted to get into the public relations side of fashion. Gucci was still a family-run business and there was a real romance to working there at the time. Eventually, I left for a smaller fashion house with a very small staff, which ended up in financial trouble. I had bills to pay so I looked for a large company with a steady paycheck where I could have a career. The UPS driver who made our deliveries was Continued on page 24 Milepost Magazine • First Quarter 2017

Member Spotlight continued convinced that UPS offered everything I was looking for. I took a job as a driver in NYC, expecting to stay a few months. Instead, I was approached for a management position within that time and worked as a driver trainer and dispatcher. One day, the HR team asked if I was interested in a communications position. They had check-marked that I was a communications major- I guess they didn’t have a box for fashion majors. Anyhow, that job opened my eyes to how much UPS does and really broadened my perspective. Eventually, I ended up as the chief spokesman for the UPS airline in Louisville, KY, which lead to a government affairs job there. After 15 years, I was offered my current job in New York. My family was settled in Kentucky, and my kids were in middle and high school so we decided it was best with the travel the job would entail to keep my family there and work during the week out of New York. I knew it would entail missing some weekday events, I make sure I’m there for the big events and we make it work. So, my 3 month job turned into a 29 year career!

24

What are some of your short- or long-term professional goals? I’d like to repeal the TMT in New York and pass tax reform in Pennsylvania. One of my long-term personal goals is to be a grandfather one day! Do you have any other personal goals? I’d like to build my own house. If you could switch places with someone for a day, who would it be? The President of the United States. I’d love to fly around in Air Force One and work in the Oval Office. If you could have any job other than your own, what would it be? I’d like to be the CEO at UPS…or a home builder. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? My goal is to work 6 or 7 more years and I’ll see where I go from there. I like my job, so I’m not rushing to leave. When I do retire, I’d like to do some work in the non-profit world. I’m currently enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration

www.nytrucks.org • Trucking Association of New York

program at Marist, which should take me about 5 or 6 years to complete at my current pace. It’s about challenging myself and continually learning, more than it is for my job, though I may apply it after I retire. I’d also like to be on a framing crew. I don’t want to be the boss. I just want to do the job and see the results. Whatever I do, I’m sure I’ll be near my kids and golf! What characteristics do you admire in others? I really admire a positive attitude and loyalty. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Don’t try to rush. Do your work right the first time, because if you don’t have time to do things right the first time, how are you going to find time to do it over again? What advice would you give to someone entering the industry today? Work hard, always give your best, take time to get out on the road, and treat your team with respect.
