CHEERS to HARVEST SEASON

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

Thirty miles long and five miles wide, Napa Valley is home to more than 500 wineries through a collection of six charming towns: Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga. You can find many of life’s finest indulgences here, like wine, food, relaxation, and plenty of adventure. And best of all? It is conveniently located only an hour North of San Francisco, or alternately, an hour West of Sacramento.

Napa Valley has been regarded as the leading region for producing American wine since the 1970's, when it first gained prominence internationally. Because of this, it's easy to forget the incredible culinary scene, luxury resorts, rejuvenating hot springs, and stunning scenery combined with small town charm that makes this destination so special.

Despite experiencing challenges from brushfires and mandated closures, Napa Valley hotels, wineries, and restaurants are flourishing today. Most places book up weeks (or months) in advance, and reservations are necessary nearly everywhere; so it’s vital that you plan ahead before visiting.

The valley's unofficial gateway is easily identified by a pair of bridges that cross the Napa River. For decades, tourists have driven past this part of town; however, in recent years, these

the town of Napa, making this renowned winery much more accessible.

Victorian-lined streets have undergone a renaissance, turning downtown Napa into a walkable hub for dining, shopping, and wine tasting. Today, you can find dozens of wine tasting rooms, as well as breweries, distilleries, and bars that are brand new- or date back to the 1970's or earlier.

One of Napa's oldest wineries, Mayacamas Vineyards, dates back to 1889. It was built on a hilltop, and requires a difficult trek along a rough and windy road. Recent enhancements have created a new tasting outpost in

When it comes to eating, skip the lines that form at Napa Valley’s staple breakfast joints (Model Bakery and chef Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery); instead, follow locals to their favorite spots, like Contimo Provisions and Farmstead at Longmeadow Ranch. Other local hot spots include Evangeline in Calistoga, Goose & Gander and Market in St. Helena, and Lucy in Yountville.

FROM GOOD to GRAPE

A RECIPE INSPIRED BY CALIFORNIA'S WINE COUNTRY

Burrata is an Italian cheese known for its creamy texture and rich, indulgent flavor. When it's paired with grapes grown in California, eating it becomes even more enjoyable. This recipe is a harmonious blend of textures, flavors, and culinary traditions. It's a combination that celebrates the richness of cheese and the natural sweetness of grapes.

Grilled Grapes with Burrata Cheese

The combination of grilled grapes and burrata cheese makes for a delightful combination, blending the sweetness of grapes with the creamy, rich flavor of the cheese.

You can pair this recipe dozens of ways. Here are some suggestions:

- Try serving the grilled grapes and burrata cheese with slices of toasted bread or crostini. The bread provides a neutral base to enjoy the sweet and creamy flavors of the grapes and cheese.

- Wrap thin slices of prosciutto around the grapes for a combination of sweet, smoky, and salty flavors. The saltiness of the prosciutto complements the sweetness of the grapes and richness of the burrata.

- Toss some fresh arugula leaves with a light vinaigrette and arrange them on a platter alongside the grapes and burrata. The peppery arugula adds a refreshing, slightly bitter, contrast to the sweetness of the grapes.

- Sprinkle some toasted nuts, like walnuts or hazelnuts, over the dish. The crunch and nutty flavors of the nuts provide a textural contrast that can enhance the overall taste.

- Serve the dish with a drizzle of honey or a piece of honeycomb. The natural sweetness of honey adds another layer of flavor.

Here's a simple recipe to help you create this delicious dish.

What you need

2 cups seedless grapes (red or green)

1 tablespoon olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

– 8 ounces burrata cheese

– Fresh basil leaves for garnish

– Balsamic glaze (optional)

Sesame seeds (optional)

Directions

Preheat your grill to medium heat.

In a bowl, toss grapes with olive oil, salt, and pepper until fully coated.

Place grapes on a pan or skewers to prevent them from falling through grill grates. You can also use a grill basket or try wrapping the grapes in foil.

Place the grape-filled pan, skewers, or basket on preheated grill. Cook for 4-6 minutes, turning occasionally until they are slightly charred and start bursting. Be careful not to overcook in order to maintain their juiciness.

While the grapes are grilling, prepare your serving presentation by tearing the burrata cheese into small pieces and arranging the pieces on a platter.

Once grapes are ready, remove from the grill and allow them to cool.

Place the grapes on the platter with the cheese. Drizzle olive oil over the top, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

For some extra flavor, drizzle balsamic glaze, and sprinkle sesame seeds over the dish.

Serve the grilled grapes and burrata cheese immediately while the cheese remains creamy and the grapes are warm. This dish is great as an appetizer or as part of a cheese platter.

Committed to our community

Over the past year and a half, Karen Kane has partnered with GrowGood, a Los Angeles urban farm and 501(c)(3) organization, to host employee volunteer events to help feed homeless residents of our community and provide them with opportunities to get back on their feet. GrowGood manages an urban farm that's attached to the Salvation Army's Bell Shelter, closely located to our headquarter office in Downtown Los Angeles. Teams of Karen Kane employees have helped plant new vegetables, harvest crops, remove weeds from gardens, prune trees, maintain orchards, wash produce, clear farm paths, tend native plants, and learn about the way healthy food and gardening can act as catalysts for healing.

Cultivating health & hope

GrowGood operates a 1.5 acre farm in collaboration with the Salvation Army Bell Shelter, which is the largest homeless shelter West of the Mississippi River. It provides transitional care for 500 homeless individuals, while GrowGood supplies healthy food and the opportunity to garden as a catalyst for healing.

The farm consists of a fruit orchard with 71 trees, a vegetable garden, a 1/2 acre of in-ground row crops, a state-of-the-art greenhouse, and a native plant habitat filled with 300 drought-tolerant plants. The farm serves more purposes than just serving food; it also offers shelter residents an opportunity to work and enjoy the great outdoors. For the greater Los Angeles community, the farm also offers a place to connect with the land and learn how food is grown. We're very proud to be a GrowGood partner and strongly support the organization's mission to help shelter residents improve mental clarity and regain their independence.

GrowGood is making an investment to create a community that will thrive through pride of work and the belief that farming and healthy food can offer total nourishment for mind, body, and soul. They have created a replicable model for urban farming that serves as a platform for homeless individuals to participate in healing through physical labor as well as by gaining useful skills they can leverage for future careers.
