LETTER FROM EDITOR

Where are my fellow introverts living with social anxiety?

I

f you’re reading this, you’ve stumbled upon my once embryo, turned fetus, now newborn baby. Welcome to Noire Women’s Wellness Mag! Sit back, buckle your seatbelt, and enjoy the ride. Because it’s been one heck of a journey for me! Don’t let the bright smile and IG pics fool you – I am still the introverted, socially anxious person I have always been. However, once I turned thirty I started a quest to find, trust, and use my voice. I use my personal IG page to share pics of vacations and my family, motivational memes (some pretty funny ones too!), celebrate accomplishments, and post the occasional selfie when I’m feeling cute. Social media has given us a medium to share whatever we want, whenever we want. Believe it or not, this is a form of using your voice. Using your voice unapologetically is a concept our cover star, actor, author, and multimedia personality Rashan Ali lives by. Keep flipping/swiping through to read more about this rock mom. Life as a Black woman in America has never been easy, but add a Pandemic, record breaking inflation, an overload of social injustices, an abundance of racism, AND an attack on women’s reproductive rights and what do you have? 2022. Despite all of this, we’ve been showing up and showing out! We’re setting goals, setting

trends, and breaking glass ceilings like never before. Showing up as your authentic self – on and offline – is and always will be a vibe. Finding my voice led me down the path of living my life unapologetically and sooth my social anxiety. This magazine is a way of using my voice. But mainly my way of amplifying OUR voices. Again, welcome to NWW – where we share and amplify Black women’s thoughts and voices. Kaye Sadler Editor-in-Chief Q @kayeannsadler

MIND

THE POWER OF CONVERSATION By Nicole Paradise

Suffering in silence does not make us stronger. It is through the power of conversation that we find our true strength.

B

efore COVID mandates so many of us already wore a mask and our own pain kept us isolated and socially distant. And now, in a world where our social skills thrive off of Wi-Fi or 4g connectivity more of us are socially connected while at the same time disconnected. Socially engaging in real conversation has become a rarity while Mental Health issues are a reality that is becoming more and more prevalent every day.

The myth that suffering in silence makes us stronger still exists, but do we ever actually feel stronger? 10 | Noire Women’s Wellness

No, most times we feel worse but are inclined to say we are fine. You know – the lie we first tell ourselves then say out loud to hide the fact that we are dying on the inside. The truth is it takes a strong person, a brave person to say that they are not okay. Have you ever read or heard words of struggle that grazed your pain? And as you continued to listen or read along you realized that this was your story narrated by someone else. That is the power of conversation. When we share our stories, our voices align with those whose pains and struggles are familiar. And instantly the I that feels all alone becomes the “we that are all alone, together.”

THE STRONG WOMAN, THE HEALER, THE HERO! BUT WHO SAVES THE HERO? YOU, THAT’S WHO! YOUR VOICE, YOUR WORDS, YOUR STORY. Conversation is the key to cultivating oneness. It can create ripple effects so profound July/August 2022

that one story can save many lives. A brave soul shares their story, another person finds the courage to stand up, another finds their voice and speaks out and someone else seeks help. And there, in the middle of what feels like beautiful chaos, you begin to realize there is purpose in your pain. We can imagine that life would be much easier if we were all allowed to choose pretty things and only good days for the rest of our lives but it is not that simple. There are no fairy godmothers or genies waiting with three wishes to change our story. That power belongs to us. Unfortunately, life comes with no instruction manual. No page six that says it’s all downhill from here. We are all navigating our way through life learning as we go along. And although there are no pages filled with specific directions, if we seek answers, we will find solutions. We are all given the power and the choice to change our narrative and it is time we start using our power.

like to go through cycles of sadness. A woman who loves to write things. A healer by way of words. And the creator of The Paradise Walk & Talk, a safe space for conversation which raises awareness for S.A.D. – Seasonal Depression. Through countless conversations, I have found that the common question is “How do we get out of this?”, but the more important question has come to be “How do we get through this?”

OWNING OUR STORIES, ACKNOWLEDGING OUR EMOTIONS, AND SAYING IT OUT LOUD. I AM DEPRESSED. I AM HURTING. I AM STRUGGLING. I AM NOT OKAY

For me, knowing that when winter came around my mood was at its most vulnerable state, I had to make a change that was proactive and not reactive. I was depressed and needed to find the gumption to go forward. I gave myself two choices: fight back or cave in. I decided to fight back and even when I fought back on some days, I still caved in and that was absolutely normal. Life is about playing the cards we are dealt. No matter how challenging it may become, we do not get to throw our hand back in the deck and reshuffle. We get one life and we owe it ourselves

I am not a therapist nor am I a psychiatrist. I am a human who understands what it feels

Never feeling sad, down or depressed may sound ideal but it is not realistic. Dark days will come, the emotions may seize the moments and if we are not vigilant, some days will turn into seasons of sadness. Whichever it may be, it all points to why putting ourselves and our mental wellness first is of extreme importance. In knowing that life is full of ups and downs, the key to our selfcare is learning how to enjoy and celebrate our ups and handle and manage our downs - all while balancing work.

to play our hand. Ultimately that makes the difference between living and existing. I took control of my mental health and began with a change that enhanced my overall well-being every day and not just in one season. I have always loved walking. I started to use it as a mechanism to clear my mind. Walking coupled with music, fresh air and a bit of sunlight was easy for me to do alone. That was until I started to wonder how many others go through the walks of life alone suffering in silence. I then curated a safe space for conversation which included walking and talking. It was on those walks and in those moments that it became very clear that everyone’s mental health and wellness was something most do not disclose and were afraid to discuss. This is where being vocal became crucial because if we all pretended to be okay, how could we help one another. I’ve learned a lot along the way but one of the most important for me was identifying that the release of endorphins was my happy hack. I began to understand how physical activity played a major role in changing my mood. The gym also became a priority for my sanity and losing weight, well that was the bonus. Although pain is universal, there is no magic wand that makes one thing work for everyone. What works for me may not work for you but if we do not share, we may never know. We do not all process pain the same nor do we heal alike. So whether you need your tribe – a support group or a licensed professional – your burdens need to be released. Saying it out loud can make all the difference and you never know who your story is helping.

BE BRAVE. BE VOCAL. YOUR LOWS CAN BE SOMEONE’S

I

love to travel! It’s a beautiful way to experience yourself and life in a different, more expansive way. While visiting Playa Del Carmen, Mexico I went snorkeling in the wondrous Chikin Ha Cenote. I’m not a strong swimmer, so I was both fearful and curious about what magic the cave and its water held. I eased into the water timidly. Then I saw a rope that I could hold onto. I put my snorkel mask on and swam towards the rope. At first, I had trouble breathing with the snorkel mask on, but I realized that I was holding my breath as soon as I went under water, out of fear. Once I started holding the rope, I became less fearful. Then I kept my head underwater a little longer, while still holding tight to the rope. At times, I would even hold on with both hands. Once I relaxed my breathing, I held the rope looser with one hand. Relaxed breathing became more natural, and I found myself becoming immersed in the beauty underwater. I eventually released my hand from the rope absentmindedly. I noticed myself doing that more and I began letting go on purpose but keeping close to the rope. As I got closer to the other side of the cenote, I became more confident and began deliberately swimming away from the rope. “Change the way you see things and the things you see will change.” ~Wayne Dyer, Change Your Thoughts Change Your Life Once I left my safety net, I began to see the beauty underwater more clearly. Once I got to the other side, I quickly dove back in to see where I’d been with clearer eyes. Eyes free of fear. Swimming back everything was so beautiful I would only lift my head periodically if I was unsure of the direction I was headed. I would quickly put it back underwater so I wouldn’t miss anything because I’d missed a lot the first time around. I saw so much more on the way back that I decided to take another

dive. This last time I really explored. I started looking into crevices. I saw colors I hadn’t noticed before. Light. Shadows. Darkness. And all was beautiful. I learned a valuable life lesson in that cenote cave. You can never see the full beauty of something if you’re fearful of it. We are living in a time of unprecedented uncertainty. We are inundated with news of tragedies. And many are still experiencing isolation. Fear has almost become a way of life. None of this is normal. The human mind can only take so much. Our nervous systems are not equipped to handle the constant stream of fear we are collectively experiencing. “Just as a gardener cultivates his plot, keeping it free from weeds, and growing the flowers and fruits which he requires, so may a man tend the garden of his mind, weeding out all the wrong, useless, and impure thoughts, and cultivating toward perfection the flowers and fruits of right, useful, and pure thoughts. By pursuing this process, a man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life.” ~ James Allen, As a Man Thinketh Pay attention to what you feed your mind. Your conscious mind, thinking mind, is the guardian of the gate to your subconscious mind. Information that we consume through our five senses enters our subconscious mind. And we then involuntarily act from our subconscious. This is why it can be difficult to break a habit or why we sometimes act in ways that do not serve us. The conscious mind controls what enters our mind. Our subconscious mind drives our actions and emotions. It’s extremely important to be mindful about the entertainment you consume and conversations you entertain. The music we listen to, the news, television shows, YouTube videos, social me-

“YOU CAN NEVER SEE THE FULL

BEAUTY OF SOMETHING IF YOU'RE FEARFUL OF IT.” dia, people we converse with, all shape our subconscious mind and inner world. About 95% of our thoughts are derived from the subconscious. Pay attention to your thoughts and speech. Your thoughts and words are spells that manifest in the outer world. Know that you are the creator and author of your life. You create your life experience with your thoughts. Thoughts you repeatedly think become beliefs. Beliefs determine your actions and how you perceive the world around you. Your actions create your experience. And your perceptions become your reality.

What are you feeding your mind, body and spirit? Do your entertainment choices and conversations inspire you and motivate you to take the right actions? Or do they numb you, dumb you down and inspire fear? Are you consciously creating your life experience or are you allowing your thoughts, therefore your life, to be shaped by outside influences? There are no wrong answers to these questions. They’re meant to spark awareness. Be honest with yourself as you assess your inputs. You must know where and who you are in the present moment in order to make positive changes for the better. And with awareness comes the power to make new, more empowering choices.

SKIN TIGHTENING MASSAGES DO THEY REALLY WORK?

T

here’s quite a bit of debate on whether skin tightening massages are actually helpful. However, there’s a significant number of specialists in support of adding skin tightening massages into your daily selfcare regimen. If you’re looking for a dazzling and glowing dermis, you shouldn’t miss out on the appropriate massaging techniques. Tightening massages are not only relaxing but quite beneficial as well. There are many keys to youthful skin, this includes the removal of toxins, opening up of blood vessels, removal of dead skin and proper circulation of blood. The Effects of Skin Tightening Massages There are certain ways in which skin tightening massages help life up your dermis. When done properly, such massages increase blood

22 | Noire Women’s Wellness

flow to your face. This, in turn pumps up the slack skin. This encourages lymphatic drainage, draining the toxins out and away from your skin so that there’s space for nutrients to reach your skin. Massaging your skin in an upward motion will prevent your face from sagging and fully suffuse the blood with your skin tissue. Healthy skin brimming with vitality is almost guaranteed with such face massages. You can say goodbye to a dull complexion as well! There are also plenty of other benefits of tightening facial massages. People have experienced anti-aging effects from such massages. Wrinkles tend to get nailed out as well so the overall appearance of your skin will improve!

Other more serious issues such as acne and illnesses effecting jaw joints and its ligaments such as in TMJ can also be efficiently reduced with the right skin tightening massage tactics. If you’re looking for even better results than trying out such massages with various ingredients as a home remedy will improve your skin even more. For rejuvenated skin use tightening techniques with Almond oil, Pomegranate seed oil, Mango or Kokum butter. Get ready for a revitalized look!

RASHAN ALI Rashan Ali is a revered multimedia personality who has spent more than a decade as a local Atlanta radio station host, a freelance sports reporter, and a host on various nationwide television outlets. Most recently, she co-hosted the daily talk show Sister Circle Live. Currently, Rashan hosts Cool Soror, a podcast highlighting exceptional men and women in Black Greek lettered organizations. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

hose are just a few words that SHOULD be used when describing Rashan. She’s had many accomplishments in her years as a multi-media professional, but her recent triumph as a bikini competitor is what is garnering attention lately. Rashan has never really been a stranger to the fit life. She started swimming at five years old, then played soccer, and was also a jazz, tap, and ballet dancer. Rashan swam competitively at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and maintained her athletic build post-undergrad, but in 2021 she decided to take on the challenge of training for her very first fitness competition. It has always been something that she aspired to accomplish and what better way to get rid of a little post-pandemic pudge than to get on a strict diet

and begin a rigorous training routine. And baby she did that and some! Most people need a “get pumped” playlist to fuel their workouts, especially on days they really don’t want to do it. When asked about her workout playlist, to my surprise, the Atlanta native admits it’s usually west coast singer/rapper, SiR, R&B music, or a Podcast (Earn Your Leisure or her Podcast, Cool Soror, to be specific). Rashan’s musical palette in general is pretty diverse, so outside of the gym you can catch her listening to anyone from the UK band Portishead to Jeezy. Let me tell you something, training for a bodybuilding competition is NOTHING like working out (I mean no offense to anyone not training). There’s just a different degree of disJuly/August 2022

cipline required. Even as a former collegiate athlete, Rashan admits competition training tested her discipline levels like never before. Factor in being a woman of a certain age (forty-five plus), a wife and mom of two, and juggling a career and you’ve got a superwoman in the making! Rashan wears many hats – and wears them well I might add – but the most important one of them all is the mom hat. As a “girl mom”, she strives to portray a positive image for her girls in all that she does. Because these kids are sponges! They see their mommy exercising, working, nurturing and spending time with them, attending their extracurriculars, AND making time to entertain or go out with her friends. That is so important! Gone are the days where moms are expected to relinquish all aspects of their social lives for motherhood. Little girls need to see that women can do it all – pursue successful careers, take care of home, and take care of themselves. As a multi-media professional, Everybody’s Homegirl, as she’s been dubbed, has built her career around using her voice, whether on the radio or tv, or hosting an event. Once she was able to dig deep and find a level of authenticity and use her voice, she’s been far July/August 2022

more impactful and influential. Rashan thinks that women in all positions and stages of life – whether you’re a celebrity, a teacher, a janitor, or you’re in a cubicle at a corporation – have the opportunity to use our voice to make a difference. We all have the power to shape our own narrative and to use that influence to change other people’s narratives.

Rashan is putting a pause on competing for now, while she focuses on getting her Podcast, Cool Soror, to the next level. She’s determined to find a home for it on a major network and attributes her current level of determination to the lessons learned from competing. When recollecting the prep and training experience, Rashan says proudly, “The level of discipline I was able to really experience, those transferrable skills, the go get it attitude, I’ve always had it! But it’s definitely next level now.” She recalls, “I’ll have those skills for life, and I will forever be grateful for all of it, because I learned so much about myself.” “Now I feel like I can almost be a counselor for women who went through the process because I endured so much – even though I only did it for a year and I may do it again – but I understand the mental piece of it and how important it is to have a support system. People only think about the physical. That mental piece is probably even bigger.”

As a “girl mom”, she strives to portray a positive image for her girls in all that she does. Because these kids are sponges! They see their mommy exercising, working, nurturing and spending time with them, attending their extracurriculars, AND making time to entertain or go out with her friends. That is so important!

Without a doubt, Rashan is a powerful force to be reckoned with. Using her voice is not a new concept for her. But through her actions, being bold and unapologetic, I can guarantee she will be heard on levels she aspires to reach.

HEALTHY EATING

ARE FAD DIETS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU? T

he opinions surrounding fad diets are varied. Many people do not prefer specialized meal plans due to their restrictive nature and lack of scientific evidence that proves they bring guaranteed results. Such folks tend to fulfill their dietary needs with all-inclusive meals and fasting. However, a considerable number of people fulfill their wellness goals with specified diets. They are a few different fad diets you could try for various objectives. Whether you’re looking to fulfill your weight loss goals for a shredded summer body or maintain a healthy lifestyle by focusing on nutritional foods, there’s a perfect diet for every goal! Let’s take a closer look at some of the various diet plans you could try!

The Keto Diet Ketogenic meal plans have risen in popularity over the years. The Keto diet was originally used to treat patients with epilepsy, but nowadays, it’s used to shed weight. What makes this type of diet plan different from other fad diets is that it’s high in fat and low in carbohydrates. However, there are certain pros and cons to note as well.

Pros: • A decrease in carbohydrates will lead to a decrease in water weight • It will help with blood sugar regulation due to a reduction in simple carbohydrates

Cons: • Since carbs are the body’s primary energy source, it may cause fatigue, brain fog, irritability, or constipation

Keto Breakfast

• There is no specific diet for healthy and unhealthy fat.

The Paleo Diet The main purpose of fad diets such as these is to improve overall health by improving glucose regulation, cholesterol balance, blood pressure, etc. It includes foods such as eggs, meat, vegetables, fish, fruits, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils. Pros: • This diet removes processed foods that are often injurious to health. • Promotes healthy heating practices that improve satiety.

Cons:

• Not sustainable as it can be expensive to maintain. • Reduced carbohydrate intake can lead to neural issues.

Paleo Lunch

Vegan Diet A vegan or vegetarian diet is purely made up of plant-based foods and completely removes animal products as well as by-products such as honey, eggs, or dairy items. One might opt for this diet due to moral reasons, environmental concerns, or simply wanting a healthier lifestyle. Pros: • Low in cholesterol, sodium and fat. • Heart-protective benefits.

Cons: • You’ll become more susceptible to vitamin D, B-12, omega-3, iron, and zinc deficiencies. • Difficult to regain mass after major medical procedures like surgery due to reduced protein intake.

HORMONE AWARENESS By Dr. Trudy Wright

omen often believe that conversations about menopause are reserved for senior citizens or at least those in their fifties. There are many health complications that arise as a result of even a slight decline in estrogen levels. Exercise and nutrition play a vital role in the management of menopause. Unfortunately, in many cases, hypothyroid issues can easily be misdiagnosed as perimenopause. Young women and matriarchs alike, must pay close attention to what our bodies are trying to communicate to us. Younger women under forty, such as myself, with an active lifestyle typically wouldn’t find themselves amongst peers discussing menopausal issues. However, recent studies have shown that even women in their thirties could suffer from early menopause. According to womenshealth.gov, early or premature menopause, a condition where the ovaries stop releasing eggs and or producing the typical amounts of reproductive hormones, only affects five percent of the American population. While that number is low, you could unknowingly be included in that statistic. Many of the commonly known and utterly annoying symptoms of menopause include irregular menstrual periods, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and hot flashes. A complication that is far more severe, yet less noted outside of the medical community, is the silent killer known as heart and blood vessel disease. As estrogen levels decrease, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases. Some non-life threatening but accompanying inconveniences are osteoporosis and urinary incontinence. Osteoporosis is a brittle and weak bone condition, and the latter can cause frequent urinary tract infections and strong sudden urges to urinate. There are no proven studies that show how exercise and eating a balanced diet can slow a woman’s progression

July/August 2022

into the various stages of menopause. However, the mayoclinic.org Women’s Health section speaks to how exercise can strengthen your bones, curbing some of the negative effects of osteoporosis. While Black women normally don't have concerns in that area, our genetic predisposition to sickle cell and lupus can be contributing factors. Weight gain, especially in the abdomen area, can be kept at bay through proper nutrition and exercise. I enjoy balanced meals that are low in fat and sodium. Also, dark chocolates are a great dessert that can elevate your mood to balance crankiness brought about by menopause. A wellness focused lifestyle, along with other determinants of health, can improve the overall quality of life for any woman at any age. Despite your best efforts of dieting and regular exercise, you could still see little to no progress in the mirror. At first glance, a doctor could assume that you are in the pre-menopause stage. The symptoms of hypothyroidism and menopause can appear to be eerily similar without a professional healthcare provider asking the right questions and requesting the accurate testing of various hormone levels. If you are experiencing a loss of energy, sex drive, or overall vitality, I think it would be wise to consult your primary care physician, OBGYN, or endocrinologist. Lastly, I am a pharmacist. I fill prescriptions for bio identical hormone creams that help women to present the best version of themselves to the world every day. Much like the warning indicator lights on a car’s dashboard, the longer we wait to address the issue, the harder it becomes to address and or correct. Actively listen to your body, and don’t always make decisions solely for convenience. If you are uncertain about something, educate yourself under the guidance of your doctor.

IS YOUR GUT IN CHAOS?

A

re you having trouble living a healthier lifestyle due to gut problems? Stomach problems are connected to issues with decision-making, cardiovascular problems, and hormonal changes causing emotional shifts as well. It’s safe to say that if your gut is in ruins, your overall wellness is in jeopardy. When folks rely on their “gut feeling” to make decisions, they’re usually referring to a series of signals from the enteric nervous system or ENS. The ENS is comprised of more than 100 million nerve cells that make up two thin layers lining your gastrointestinal tract. If your gut is in chaos, then your life may be becoming chaotic as well. Popular research from various credible sources, such as the Harvard Medical School, has proven that Black women are more susceptible to various issues stemming from gut problems such as diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure, and stress. Many African-American people face stomach issues with gastritis and colitis. This is attributed to many factors such as socio-eco-

40 | Noire Women’s Wellness

nomic status, systemic racism, and possible predisposed conditions. Thankfully, there are some ways you can resolve your stomach issues for a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise & Morning Routines

The morning is the perfect time to go for a walk to enjoy a physical activity that gets your motors running! If you’re looking for good gastric health, then you need to keep your microbe metabolites healthy as well! Going for a jog or some level of strenuous activity will help ease your metabolism.

Reduce Stress Levels

A lot of folks look towards comfort food, which is often unhealthy when they’re feeling emotional, upset, or down. Stress eating can cause gut problems down the line as our bodies won’t break down the foods properly due to the wrong neurological responses and signals. Reduce stress levels by spending time in nature or spending time with your pets. You should try to avoid harmful eating habits or switch to healthier alternatives.

Track Your Consumption

You can keep a food journal or use the various food consumption tracking apps available. Track your calories and the time between meals to ensure you aren’t overloading your stomach. Make notes of how you feel 30-45 minutes after a meal so you can rework your meal timing accordingly.

SELF-CARE FOR SISTERS TO COMBAT STRESS

By Dr. Michelle A. Mitcham, LMHC-S, NCC, CCMHC, CFM

ental health is real. Stress and stressors are par for the course. Sometimes, just turning on the television can increase our stress with so much going on in the world. From relationships, employment, parenting, injustices, double standards to microaggressions, student loans, domestic and global traumatic events and caregiver compassion fatigue – it all adds up and may contribute to your stress level. Everyone has experienced some stress or even anxiety in their lifetime, even incessant, chronic stress. Feeling stress is very normal. Have you ever experienced a moderate level of stress before an exam or when preparing to pack for a major vacation? This may be a normal level of anxiety, which may be interpreted as beneficial, called eustress. Eustress is considered positive stress, that which motivates one to improve performance or complete a task. On the other hand, one may experience a negative type of stress –Distress, characterized by unpleasant feelings that oftentimes leads to anxiety and beyond the level of one’s coping skills. Positive stressors may include a new relationship, job opportunity, for example. In contrast, negative stressors may include a toxic work environment, ending a relationship, divorce, financial debt, court/legal battles or the loss of a loved one. So what does unhealthy levels of stress look like? CBD or not CBD By D. Scott

W

ith everything going on in the world today, we can all use a break. We all need something to calm down and try to relax. CBD is an excellent addition to your daily routine. CBD stands for cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating substance found in cannabis. We often think of cannabis in terms of “getting high” or watching our cousins or uncles at the family reunion roll up something to smoke. CBD is not that. The uses are widely spread out and recently have entered the beauty market.

Hemp derived CBD is legal due to the 2018 Farm Bill. CBD derived from industrial hemp, defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC, is not a controlled substance under federal law. There are only two states that consider CBD to be illegal and there is legislation currently working on that. Because CBD is non-intoxicating, which means it doesn’t produce the “high” of THC, it is considered by some to be “non-psychoactive”. That is not entirely true. It can directly affect mental processes of cognition and mood. CBD has a well-known psychoactive effect in the calming feeling that is frequently associated with the cannabinoid. Research suggests that CBD may reduce absorption of the body’s pain regulating endocannabinoid anandamide, which could lead to pain relief. CBD has also been shown to reduce epileptic seizures by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters. Studies show that CBD may activate serotonin receptor 5-HT1A in mice, making it potentially helpful in treating depression and anxiety. There are also studies that show CBD can suppress chronic pain and inflammation by targeting alpha-3 glycine receptors according to research conducted on rodents. CBD falls into one of three categories. There is full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate. Full spectrum CBD contains minor cannabinoids, terpenes, and trace amounts of THC in the plant. (0.3%) Broad spectrum contains a full spectrum of extracted cannabinoids and terpenes but with trace amounts of THC removed. Isolate is pure CBD and with other cannabis compounds removed,

only the powdered or crystalline form of CBD remains. Products that say “hemp oil” or “hemp seed oil” usually do not contain any CBD at all. The FDA continues to crack down on CBD oil labels with unproven claims. Always check the amount of active CBD. Be clear of the suggested use of the product. Make the distinction of broad spectrum, full spectrum or isolate. If the CBD in the product wasn’t lab tested, don’t buy it. As for wellness, CBD tinctures are a good option. These can be taken orally with a dropper. A study published in the February 2019 issue of “Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry” found that CBD may be useful for treating social anxiety associated with public speaking. Doses ranging from 150mg to 600mg seem to help with public speaking while 300mg helped alleviate anxiety related symptoms. While CBD may not be a woman’s go to beauty product, there are brands that create luxury products infused with CBD. Trulybeauty has a wide range of products that contain CBD. 716CBD is Black woman owned and contains hand curated and made to order products like shea butter, mud masks, beard oil and bath bombs. CBD has been known to have anti-aging properties when used on the skin as well as anti-inflammatory. Whatever you use to wind down, do the research. CBD will be around for a long time.

FITNESS

SUMMER ABS T By Kaye-Ann Sadler

he summer is here, but it’s not too late to get started on those abs!

Here are 3 basic moves you can do regularly to tone your abdominals:

1. PLANKS

Lay on the floor in a push-up position - keep your elbows under your shoulders, hands flat on the floor and core engaged. Make sure your knees and forearms are on the floor and raise yourself up keeping your body in a straight line from your knees to your head. Beginners should attempt to hold this position for 20-30 seconds and gradually increase your holding time each time. More advanced people should hold this position for as long as possible.

2. MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS

Start in a high plank (push-up) position. Move your right knee to your chest then back to the start position. Next, move your left knee to your chest and back again. Gradually increase your pace, repeating this movement. Try these in 30-60 seconds intervals or to failure (burnout). Mountain climbers are a good source of cardio, while working your core.

3. SCISSOR KICKS

Lie on your back with your arms to your sides. Lift both of your legs slightly off the ground, while keeping them together. Keeping both legs straight, simply alternate kicking them in the air, without letting them hit the ground. Try these in 30-60 seconds intervals or to failure (burnout). This is a great way to burn that stubborn lower ab pouch.

IN THE COMMUNITY

L

ocated in Austell, Georgia, Riverside EpiCenter hosts a variety of activities, entertainment, and events for the community. With over 113,000 sq ft, it also houses a soundstage, recording studio, and quiet office spaces. I visited Riverside EpiCenter to witness firsthand what they do for their community and how they bridge the gap with Chairwoman Cupid’s Annual 5K - providing the resources that are needed for people in the community to want to get up, get out, and get active in their life purpose.

“We are bringing something to the community that can be of service.” -Dr. Christopher Boyd | Riverside EpiCenter General Manager Uplifting the community and driving ambition- this year, Chairwoman Cupid’s 5K was held on April 9th and was powered by Robert Rushing of Team Weight No More. Georgia Work Source also partnered with the EpiCenter on the 5K by offering a job fair. They provided applications for several companies and insight on what the benefits of working for the companies on sight.

It is more than just recreation for the community, it is showing the community what the possibilities are.” -Cobb County Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid July/August 2022

Riverside EpiCenter 8th Anniversary Event By Shanille V. There’s more to a healthy wellness state than just being physically fit. When you look good, you feel good and when you feel good you do better. Chairwoman Cupid’s 5K is about more than just losing weight; it gives the community hope. It gives the people of the surrounding communities a chance to explore different possibilities and directions for their lives. It’s a new year resolution. With speaking with multiple employees at Riverside EpiCenter, I found that they share similar sentiments about how they are helping the community. They agree it begins with mental health. Everyone wants to look good, but forget that they need to feel good as well. The main purpose of this event is to show the community that there is a place for them to nurture themselves and talents, which is in alignment of the EpiCenter’s mission to empower people and inspire communities.
