WELCOME to the first issue of our new monthly magazine.

WE KNOW it can be hard to keep up with everything the Library offers, which is why we are very excited about providing this printed monthly central source for library news, event listings, and new products and services information. This month’s magazine features our NOLA Library App that allows you to take the library with you anywhere you go. We also highlight a way to maintain New Year’s resolutions with Hoopla, our product that allows instant streaming or downloading of movies, tv shows, music, comic books, e-books, and audiobooks to a wide variety of digital devices. In addition to featuring products, we’ve listed the 837 events planned at our 14 locations, as well as some additional fun and interesting information. We hope you enjoy the magazine and find it valuable in exploring the interesting, entertaining, and educational resources that the Library provides. – New Orleans Public Library Staff FRONT COVER: Celebrating the arrival of the New Year and our new app are the Library’s 2017 Staff Recognition Award winners: (left to right) Kim Guidry, Don Bannister, Ruby Bengston, Adrienne Strock, (not pictured) Charlotte Horne.

2017-2019 Strategic Plan

CONTENTS

REFOCUS + TRANSFORM: A Clear Path to Continued Success In 2016, Library Staff developed, and the Library Board adopted, a Vision Statement, Core Values, and a three-year Strategic Plan. The plan was developed with input from over 3,000 community residents and Library partners who attended community listening sessions and completed online surveys. The plan was developed to provide the Library with a communityfocused direction and includes three Strategic Initiatives – CHAMPION LITERACY, STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES, and ENRICH MINDS. Each Strategic Initiative has a set of Goals and Objectives that is tied to one or more of the Core Values. When asked about the 2017-2019 Strategic Plan theme – Refocus + Transform, Kate Martin, who currently serves as the Strategic Planning and Initiatives Project Manager, said “A refocus is truly what occurred as the entire Library Staff came together to guide the creation of the plan’s goals and now we are continually transforming the Library, and in turn our community, as we all work towards the same priorities and are moving forward together.” Since the Strategic Plan launched in January of 2017, a remarkable amount of progress has been made in achieving the plan’s goals; and, with a growing sense of accomplishment, Library Staff are using the momentum from 2017 to achieve more success in 2018.

APPy

New Year START YOUR NEW YEAR WITH OUR NEW APP With the NOLA Library App, you now have a way to access your library account, event listings, our full catalog, and so much more around-the-clock and on-the-go, all from your mobile device. Available for Android and iOS, all you need to do is search for “NOLA Library” in Apple’s App Store or in Google Play for Android, and the Library will be along for the ride, wherever the destination. It’s free to download and free to use. Featuring a simple design, with intuitive functionality, you can use the app to browse the catalog for books, DVDs and music. You can also place, suspend, or cancel holds with ease and you can keep tabs on your incoming holds, due dates, renewals, fines, and more by selecting “My Account” from the app’s main menu. With the app, you can learn about upcoming library events that you are interested in by filtering through date, location, or event category. Trying to find the nearest library? The app can help with that as well. Using the “Library Locator” feature you can get library directions from Google maps and get location hours of operation and phone numbers.

2

The app offers direct access to our e-Resources content, such as e-Books, e-AudioBooks, downloadable music, magazines, and streaming films, documentaries and television programs. Even when your neighborhood library isn’t open, you will have access to the content you want when you want it. The app connects users to Overdrive for e-Books, Kanopy for streaming video content, Flipster for popular magazines, Freegal for free and legal downloadable music that’s yours to keep, and Hoopla for eAudioBooks – just to name a few. Tired of being outside of the library and seeing a book you’d like to read? The BookLook feature allows you to place holds by scanning the ISBN barcode on the back of any book. Simply scan the code on the back of the book and BookLook will check the availability within the Library. You can reserve the book instantly using this feature within the app. BookLook isn’t the only feature simplifying your life. Barcode Wallet helps you to keep track of all the barcodes for your loyalty and membership cards – including your library card. This feature lets users digitize many of their physical cards, keeping just the vital data handy. We know that today’s library user is more likely to transact their digital day on a smartphone or tablet, as much as they would have used a computer five or more years ago, which is why we launched the NOLA Library App in 2017, and it is getting great reviews. Our app has been well-received, with a 4.8 ranking on Google Play and 4 + ranking on the App Store. One Google user, called it “The app of my dreams,” and an App Store customer said, “The app is the main way I interact with the Library, and have enjoyed using all of its capabilities.” To learn more about the app and to try it out by viewing a demonstration, visit neworleans.boopsie.com. To download the app search for “NOLA Library” in Apple’s App Store or in Google Play for Android.

If you would like to have a library staff member assist you with downloading the app or walking you through all of the app features, schedule a one-on-one session. The list of sessions is available on the following page and at nolalibrary.org.

Queens, Baby Dolls and Social & Pleasure Clubs: Traditions and Rituals On Display January 7 – March 24 Exhibit Opening Sunday, January 7, 2pm Panel Discussion Sunday, January 14, 2pm

An exhibition of photographs and ceremonial attire from women who participate in the community based customs of the Black Masking/Mardi Gras Indian, Baby Doll and Social and Pleasure Club traditions. While African American men’s roles in the indigenous ritual procession traditions go back over a century, the vital role of women is not as widely known. The exhibit illustrates a historical overview of the pride and work involved in preparing for the neighborhood processions that bring beauty and pride to New Orleans. This is documented through photographs and the ceremonial attire of these women. Organized by Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson and curated by Herreast J. Harrison.

Sunday, January 7, 2 pm Exhibit Opening featuring a talk, performance, and book sale.

Sunday, January 14, 2pm Panel Discussion – Pretty Strong: Femininity and Community Processions The focus of this panel discussion is on the expanding role of women in Mardi Gras Indian, Social & Pleasure Clubs, and Baby Doll traditions and their contributions to community building and neighborhood pride. The panelist will include Maroon Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson, Guardians of the Flame; Dianne Honoré, Sugar Baroness, Black Storyville Baby Dolls; Trishekka Randolph-Tero, Revolution Social and Pleasure Club and Moderator, Maryse Dejean, WWOZ Community Radio Station.
