New Library Program Helps Adults Earn High School Diploma Online for Free
“E
ducation is the great equalizer,” which is why the New Orleans Public Library has partnered with YMCA Educational Services (YES!) to launch Career Online High School (COHS), a state-accredited program that allows adults to earn their high school diploma for free through the Library.
Andrea Gazaway, instruction coordinator for YES!, teaches classes focusing on academic skills, GED prep, workforce development, and technological knowledge for adults at the Library. The personalized online program allows students to earn their diplomas in as little as five months. With more than 30,000 adults in Orleans Parish living without a high school diploma, Gazaway believes COHS will “help raise up our city and our neighborhoods” by increasing educational access.
"The more chances our citizens have to gain the education they are searching for, the better their lives will be" “There are many students who would like to come to our classes that are not able to because of work or other responsibilities. Now, they can unlock those resources outside the confines of Library and class hours,” Gazaway said. “The more chances our citizens have to gain the education they are searching for, the better their lives will be and the better they can take care of themselves and provide for their families.”
While COHS is new to the New Orleans Public Library, the program has been implemented in more than 100 library systems in 22 states. Established in 2010, COHS has graduated hundreds of students and is continuing to grow across the country. Students, like Dawn from Arizona and Stephanie from New Jersey, said Career Online High School’s unique structure changed their lives forever.
“I love the program. Without it, I don't believe I would have ever gone back to complete high school” “I love the program. Without it, I don't believe I would have ever gone back to complete high school,” Dawn said. “It gave me the push I needed, it fit into my crazy busy life and I will forever be grateful for it.”
The Career Online High School program is free to adults, ages 19 & older, who have successfully completed 8th grade and who live in Orleans Parish. Program applicants must have a Library card in good standing or be willing to apply for a Library card. The program does not require U.S. Citizenship or a transcript. The Career Online High School program provides the following: • A personal academic coach • Convenient 24/7 online classroom access • Special training focused on ten indemand industries • Tools for starting or advancing careers, including résumés and cover letters How to get started: Step 1: Go online to cohs.nolalibrary.org. Step 2: Take the Career Online High School self-assessment. Step 3: Enroll in and complete a prerequisite course in two weeks or less. Step 4: A YMCA Educational Services staff member will contact you to get started.
Stephanie said her COHS experience allowed her to feel proud of herself again. And, with her newfound confidence, she said she finally has the tools she needs to succeed. “When I fill out an application and it asks do I have a high school diploma, I can now say ‘yes’ with dignity. So grateful for the program because my self-worth is now SKY HIGH! For the first time, I feel like there is nothing I can’t do,” Stephanie said.

"LIBRARIES SAVE LIVES" New orleans public Library Archives help free wrongfully convicted man from life-sentence AFTER SERVING 42 YEARS, two months, and 27 days of a life sentence for a murder and armed robbery he did not commit, Elvis Brooks was freed from Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola in October. On July 1, 1977, two armed men robbed the Welcome Inn bar in the Lower 9th Ward, killing one person in the process. Brooks, who lived near the bar, was arrested a few weeks later, after two white witnesses identified him from a photo lineup. Within three months, Brooks faced a capital trial and, despite 12 witnesses confirming his alibi, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The state’s sole evidence was witness identification, according to the Innocence Project New Orleans (IPNO). Over four decades later, IPNO won Brooks’ freedom, after uncovering evidence never known by Brooks or his attorney— including fingerprints from the scene, none matching Brooks’ own. In part by utilizing the Library’s Louisiana Division/City Archives, IPNO was able to prove both the prosecution and police knew about this evidence prior to Brooks’ trial, which led to their successful negotiations of his freedom. Jack Largess investigated Brooks’ case for IPNO and said the Library’s resources are often crucial in winning justice for their clients. “Access to public records is one of the most important tools for investigating 2

Are you seeking a teen intern or employee this summer? Early each summer, teens come to the Library and ask, “Where can I get a job?” but applications are often due in the spring and teens miss their window of opportunity. Last spring, the Library connected teens and businesses through the Summer Internship & Job Fair held at the Main Library. This March, in addition to the job fair, we will create a summer internship and job website for teens. If you work for a business or organization that would like to hire a teen this summer, email M'issa Fleming at mfleming@nolalibrary.org.

The Library Continues to Fight Against the Opioid Epidemic For the past two years, the New Orleans Public Library has been on the frontlines in the fight against opioidrelated deaths in our city and is proud to continue these efforts in 2020. Since September 2017, Library staff have participated in 15 Naloxone training sessions conducted by the New Orleans Health Department. In January 2019, NOPL partnered with the New Orleans Health Department and EMS to launch monthly Bystander Response Trainings, with over 200 patrons attending.
Our work to combat the opioid epidemic was recently featured in a study conducted by OCLC and the Public Library Association through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Overall, the study found our efforts successful and received by the community in a positive and supportive light. Naloxone is currently available in all 15 locations, as are staff who are trained to recognize an overdose and stop it in its tracks. For more information on OCLC’s study or to read the full report, visit impact.nolalibrary.org. The next Bystander Response Training will be held at Mid-City Library on Saturday, January 18, from 10am to 12pm. To see the full schedule of Bystander Response Training sessions, visit nolalibrary.org/events. 13
