In 2017, the City of New Orleans started a new initiative: Equity New Orleans. The City established an Equity Office and began to think through a plan for creating an equitable city government. City department heads attended trainings; and, at the end of 2017, each city department was charged with the task of creating a three-year Equity Plan. In 2018, the Library created its own Equity Task Force with the goal of ensuring that the New Orleans Public Library provides fair, equitable, and safe spaces for Library users and staff.

October is AMERICAN ARCHIVES MONTH The Louisiana Division/City Archives & Special Collections is celebrating American Archives Month by highlighting some exciting materials in the collection. In addition to the vast holdings of New Orleans’ municipal archives, the Louisiana Division also maintains and safeguards the New Orleans Public Library’s archival collection. This includes materials from some of the City’s first libraries, such as the now closed Royal Street Branch, Canal Street Library for the Blind, and the first New Orleans Public Library building located on Lee Circle. Library users can track the Library’s history and growth through photographs, annual reports, correspondence from previous City Librarians, Library ephemera, and a vibrant collection of booklists and bibliographies published by the Library in the 1960s and 70s. Celebrate American Archives Month with the Louisiana Division, located on the third floor of the Main Library and discover the rich history of your New Orleans Public Library.
