LATE FEE FORGIVENESS

Bringing Library Users Back Late Fee Forgiveness Program runs through September 3 Guinness World Records maintains the world’s largest fine paid for an overdue library book was $345.14. Amanda Hiern’s late fees were well-short of that sum, but they were still a roadblock. “A fine is a fine,” Hiern said, “And when you don’t have it, you don’t have it.” Her fines were late fees for DVDs—one of her favorite library items. She says she’s always telling people to go to the Library for all those bingeworthy shows. She doesn’t have premium cable or streaming services, so the Library’s collection of DVDs keeps her in the pop culture loop. That is, until her account became blocked due to late fees. “I think fines definitely keep people away. They kept me away,” Hiern said. “We’re all human. Things come back late. Things get stolen. Kids lose things just as easily as we do.” For Hiern, and for so many of her fellow community members, there’s a new reason to celebrate their local Library system – fine amnesty. As part of the City’s broader Amnesty Late Fee Forgiveness Program, residents can clear past-due accounts with parking and camera tickets, sales and hotel/motel taxes, code enforcement violations, and yes —even Library fines. Now that Hiern’s fines are cleared, she can start using her Library again, to keep up with one of her favorite authors: Laura Lippman. In addition to checking out DVDs and books, over the years, she has used the Library to apply for jobs, print résumés and learn new skills. It’s been a place to study, to connect, and to participate in an institution she loves so much. “It’s so good to be back,” Hiern said. “I missed my Library. I’ve always been a Library user. It has literally saved my life. When I was looking for a job, when I just needed something to do, this is my place. The Library should be the one place where we all feel we can be, whether we need it or we just want it.”

About the Late Fee Forgiveness Program • The program runs through September 3. • A one-time waiver of fines of up to $100 is available to all Library cardholders.

• Participants can use the program to get a replacement card for free.

• To participate in the program, bring a picture ID or Library Card to any Library location and ask a Library staff member for assistance. For more information about the program, visit nolalibrary.org.

Through mid-July, 2,395 Library Users have participated in the Late Fee Forgiveness Program, 518 of which have been children and teens.
