On the cover: A parade rolls through the French Quarter, 1968. For a long time, the traditional Carnival route took parades through the French Quarter, but concerns about fire and damage to historic structures led to the route being changed to the modern day Canal Street route beginning in 1971. The last year that parades with large floats rolled through the French Quarter was 1973.

Nikki (pictured above, far left) started the Crescent City Reading Buddies when she was in 6th grade. Now, her and her fellow volunteers come to Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center every month to help pass down their passion for reading.
THE CRESCENT CITY READING BUDDIES Meet the book-loving teens inspiring the next generation of readers
NIKKI WAS JUST 12 YEARS OLD “I’ve been doing Reading Buddies for when she founded the Crescent City about two years now and it’s actually so Reading Buddies Book Club, a volunteer much fun,” Nikki said. “I love when the program partnering middle and high kids get excited about what we’re reading, school students to read with younger kids. and they start smiling and get more engaged. It’s awesome to see.”
“I love reading so much and want to share my love of books with kids when they’re young” “I love reading so much and want to share my love of books with kids when they’re young, so hopefully they’ll love books and reading as much as I do,” Nikki said. “If you don't build literacy early on, you really won't have the technique and skill of reading when you're older to enjoy all of the different books and genres and all of the amazing stories that you can't really get from just listening to people.” With help from about a dozen other volunteers, Nikki brings the Reading Buddies to Rosa F. Keller Library & Community Center on the first Tuesday of every month. 4
Sophia, a 15-year-old sophomore at Mount Carmel High School said she’s been volunteering with Reading Buddies for the past few months. “It is a really rewarding thing to do,” Sophia said. “It makes me feel good to be able to make kids so happy by doing something as simple as just reading out loud to them, giving them a little sticker, or doing a craft with them.” Now 14 years old, Nikki said she’s learned a lot as the program has grown. Over the past two years, she’s been able to build a more robust cast of volunteers, expand to different locations, and even form partnerships—like the one they have now with Raising Canes, which rewards young readers with a free kids meal after they fill a bookmark with stickers given to them by their Buddy after they read five books together.
"We still want reading to be fun" “Sometimes kids can be a little rowdy or antsy, and it can be a little hard to get them to settle down and read with us, especially when they’re tired or something,” Nikki said. “But we figured out ways to keep them interested, like with the stickers and crafts and stuff. We still want reading to be fun, so we don’t want to force them into it.” Nikki started the program when she was in 6th grade with help from her mom and said watching it evolve into what it is now has been “incredible.” Now an 8th-grader at Lusher Middle School, Nikki said she hopes to keep it up for as long as she can and hopes that Reading Buddies carries on, even when she goes to college.
For more information on the program how to volunteer to help, visit nolalibrary.org/events and search for Crescent City Reading Buddies.

Early each summer, teens come to the Library and ask, “Where can I get a job?” but applications are often due in the spring and teens miss their window of opportunity. This March, in addition to the job fair, we will create a summer internship and job website for teens. If you work for a business or organization that would like to hire a teen this summer, email M'issa Fleming at mfleming@nolalibrary.org.
