North Beer Club #47 - September 2024

Page 1

HELLO

Welcome your to your September Beer Club box. This month we have something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

Something old. We revisited our first collab with Parrotdog from New Zealand. We rebrewed the delicious DDH IPA from early 2019... the first brewery in the UK to use the hop now known as Nectaron,

Something new. We are excited to present you with a brand new TFG full of English fruit.

Something borrowed. Well, sort of borrowed. We highlight a couple of beers from our friends at Full Circle in Newcastle. We have brewed with them a couple of times – most notably in collaboration for Future Skies, a 6.0% Citrus IPA. We have an amount of stock of this that is closing in on it’s drink by date – as it’s still tasting good we are giving

you opportunity to buy some at a very low price... See the “coupons” section at the end of this booklet. On the subject of Full Circle, we will be at attending and pouring at Full Circle’s first beer festival - if you’re attending please come say hello.

Something blue. Atlantis!!! Our gluten free SIPA is tasting better than ever and the label is certainly blue. Transmission IPA is more turquoise than blue - but what you have in your box is super fresh. Enjoy.

Be sure to fill in the questionaire as we begin to formulate a new beer recipe together. We can’t wait to see what you’re thinking!

Have a great month!

Hops N/A

In our 29th edition, we’ve combined blackberry, blueberry and redcurrant. These fruits are very much in season and compliment our signature gose base like nothing else.

Brewed with wheat, oats, milk sugar and an incredible amount of English berries – this takes it’s place as one of the best TFGs we’ve made to date.

Expect sweet blueberry on the nose, notes of tart redcurrant on the palette, finishing with a burst of juicy blackberry.

NORTH x PARROTDOG

Style DDH IPA

ABV 7.0%

Hops Nectaron + Citra

Back at the beginning of 2019 we brewed this beer – a collaboration with Parrotdog from New Zealand. It was special for a couple of reasons. The collab was really enjoyable, we exchanged ideas and techniques and it resulted in a beautiful beer. This was also the first beer in the UK brewed with what would become known as Nectaron. HORT 4337 hops (as they were known) were brought over by Parrotdog in their luggage... A risky move but one that paid off.

Large quantities of Nectaron hops deliver big juicy fruit flavours, think pineapple, passion fruit as well as peach and citrus fruits. When this was first produced it felt like a break through of sorts... Amidst the overwhelming choice of hazy IPAs that are available today it’s easy to forget that these beers like this were no commonplace. It’s a joy to be able to revisit this pivotal beer again years later!

NEWCASTLE’S FULL CIRCLE TELL US THEIR STORY

In 2018 our founder Ben Cleary was running The Pip Stop, his beer, wine & spirits retail outlet from their location in Annfield Plain, which is where he met our Head Brewer, Alex Redpath. The two spoke at length about starting a brewery as Alex was a keen home brewer, having recently completed a course at Brewlab who was looking to take his knowledge and passion into a full time career as a brewer.

Ben hired Alex to work as a development brewer for what would become Full Circle

Brew Co. They bought a 140L kit and started experimenting with brews, while test marketing them with customers at The Pip Stop to learn all they could about their likes and dislikes regarding the beers, the branding and anything else they could discover.

When they were happy with the product, brand and their new location they decided in 2019 that it was time to take this project to the next step and take Full Circle Brew Co. from a shed in Stanley to our location in Hoults Yard, Byker.

FEATURED IN THIS MONTH’S BEER CLUB

Moving into our first ‘real’ brewery felt like such a massive step up for us, especially being able to have our own taproom on site and keeping The Pip Stop alive within the same premises. But as we fired up the brew kit for it’s first turn in March 2023 we would soon be in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all of our movements were put on an indefinite hiatus.

Luckily we were able to quickly adapt and find ways of getting our beer into the hands of those who wanted it, despite us not being an

GUEST BREWERY

established brand yet. We ramped up our export comms as Europe were ahead of the UK with navigating the pandemic, they were resuming normal life long before we were and therefore had bars in need of beer. We still have a strong export trade and currently export to 12 different countries across Europe and Asia.

Through other initiatives such as our FCBC NOW delivery option, which people could use to get same day delivery on their beers alongside a roaring trade through The Pip Stop, we managed to get through lockdowns without having to furlough our staff and managed to grow well in what seemed like the worst time to start a business we could possibly imagine.

Once the world started to return to business as usual, we were finally able to find our feet and discover who we wanted to become and start conducting business as we had always planned.

Our production in 2023 was up 99.5% vs 2022 after securing a number of contracts. In 2024 our beers began pouring in Newcastle International Airport, making us the first independent brewery pouring there for a considerable time.

The future is looking bright and we’re looking forward to growing further in the years to come!
