HELLO! Spring is here and our new brewery at Springwell is properly up and running. We’re brewing on the new kit four times a week, have the canning line going daily, and have almost conquered the fancy new box maker!
Collabs are starting to edge back in to the schedule, with Sam and Alex heading to Norfolk to brew with Duration, and virtual collabs lined up with Leeds’ Chow Down, Russia’s AF Brewing, and Bulgaria’s Beer Gods.
Our webshop team have now fully moved to the new warehouse at Springwell. They’re on site packing your orders Monday - Saturday, and have been trialling a pop up shop at the weekends until the taproom opens. It was great to see some familiar faces at our first open day!
We also have a very exciting beer in the tanks - our first Gluten Free beer! Having extra tank space at Springwell means that we’re able to start ticking more projects off our wishlist. This the first of exciting new things to come.
Elsewhere we have been planning for a summer of great beers in our production meetings. It looks like early summer is going to be a Triple Fruited treat with the release of three brand new fruited sours! Keep your eyes peeled for them appearing in your Beer Club boxes.
Thank you for all your Beer Club support as we transition to the new site. Make sure that you join our Facebook group to chat to other members and be the first to know about Beer Club news. Love North xx
WELCOME TO THE FINALLY! WE’RE OPENING THE DOORS AND SHOWING THE WORLD WHAT WE’VE BEEN WORKING ON.
The Taproom at Springwell has twenty four draught lines pouring the freshest North beers metres from where they were brewed alongside guest beers from some of our favourite brewers in the industry. We’ll also have a cask line (one off casks of specials, and new cask only beers in the works!), wine and fizz on tap, and are developing our own NB keg Negroni. Two shipping containers are being converted into street food kitchens which will be home to Little Bao Boy and Kerbside Kids (hello smashed burgers!). During the Spring we’ll be open for food and drink outside, with Little Bao Boy steaming their fluffy clouds of joy. The fridges indoors will be stocked with cold cans to take home, and the merchandise shop will be open for business. Once the government give us the all clear on indoor drinking (and the kitchens are kitted out) Kerbside Kids will be moving in to fulfil all our burger dreams. Veggie or Vegan? We’ve got you!
SPRINGWELL TAP Whilst the ongoing lockdown and roadmap has meant that we’ve had to put our first Beer Festival on pause for 2021, we’re working on some fun events for the summer behind the scenes! Love cycling? We’re plotting with Paria to hold another Paperboy charity bike race. Running more your thing? The North Running Club is gearing up for in person runs as the nights get lighter, and we’re plotting a proper North Leeds running event this summer. More interested in beery events (this is a Beer Club after all!)? We’re already lining up some in person collabs and tap takeovers at Springwell for the summer months. We cannot wait!

Hops Bullion + East Kent Goldings + Cascade
A Best Bitter, for you, for me and for us. Chevallier, Crystal, Munich, Amber Malt and Torrefied Wheat provide a fine crunchy biscuit and sweet marmalade base with a clear and rich amber hue. A blend of whole leaf Bullion, East Kent Goldings and UK Cascade allow for a strong bitter line to run through the whole drink and throw bouquets of earthy blackberry, honey and gentle floral pine aroma. Our ode to a winter not spent tucked in next to a fire in the pub, with a pint of perfectly conditioned cask in our hand.

Hops
Simcoe + Simcoe Cryo
Uber silky and fluffy, Simcoe is transformed into a super fruity softy in Work and Non Work, a 7% Simcoe IPA. Sweet peach and sticky passion fruit is reflected by dank and resinous notes, pithy orange and pink bubblegum aroma. Our beloved Simcoe, but not as you know it.

TFG: MANGO Style
Triple Fruited Gose
ABV 4.5% Hops
None
We’ve dedicated this Triple Fruited Gose to the thickest and tastiest tropical fruit, with nothing but Mango! Being showcased in all it’s glory, Mango’s juicy, soft, sweet and slightly bitter qualities balance beautifully against the signature salty goodness of our base Gose recipe.

MODULAR Style IPA ABV 6.0% Hops
El Dorado + Comet
A hazy IPA rounded with a heavy dose of oat and fermented with London Ale III to produce an incredibly smooth and fluffy body. AngloAmerican Comet hops give punchy orange pith and grapefruit juices with an aromatic floral lemongrass aroma. El Dorado laid on top brings sweet cherry and watermelon aroma and soft, sweet fleshy pear flavour.

NORTH X GOOD THINGS BREWING CO Style
Barley Wine
ABV 10.0% Hops
Bullion
Good Things Brewing are the first closed loop, fully sustainable brewery in the UK. They bore their own water, create their own power, and turn their spent brewers grain into flour. Their brewery is powered by solar panels, which also recharge their electric delivery van. We were able to host some of the team from Good Things last autumn in Leeds. They gave us some much appreciated advice on sustainability at Springwell, and we brewed up a barley wine together. This is our first barley wine, and is one to sip and savour.

ORNAMENT Style
Session IPA
ABV 4.1% Hops
Citra + Galaxy + Mosaic
Ornament is 4.1% Pale Ale hopped like an IPA and fermented with Norwegian Kveik Yeast, a Kveik Session IPA. Extra Pale malt and flaked oats provide a smooth, easy drinking beer with a full body whilst Citra, Azzaca, Simcoe, Galaxy and Mosaic hops makes the beer burst with ripe tropical aroma along with bright zesty lemon rind, aromatic pink grapefruit, succulent juicy pineapple, white grape and fleshy honey melon flavour. Kveik yeast brings a subtle clean tartness and accentuates the hop profile.

VOLTA Style
Blood Orange and Rhubarb Sour
ABV 4.1% Hops
None
We first brewed Volta in 2017 as we took baby steps into the world of sours! Volta is a 4.1% kettle sour with plenty of wheat, fresh rhubarb, blood orange purée and fresh orange zest! We now brew it seasonally anticipating the rhubarb harvest each winter. Fun Volta fact: West Yorkshire is home to the Rhubarb Triangle; a nine-square-mile area between Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell where fuchsia pink rhubarb is picked by candlelight between January and March each year. The Rhubarb Triangle produces 90% of the world’s forced Rhubarb, and holds its own Rhubarb Festival to celebrate in February. The rhubarb used in Volta is sourced from E. Oldroyd & Sons in Rothwell who have harvested rhubarb using this method for five generations.

GUEST BREWERY LEFT HANDED GIANT ARE A BRISTOL-BASED BREWING COMPANY, SET UP BY THE BRAINS BEHIND SMALL BAR. THEY HAVE GROWN TO OPEN A BREWERY AND TAPROOM IN ST PHILIPS, AND A DESTINATION BREWPUB IN THE HEART OF BRISTOL.
The Left Handed Giant story started in 2014 when a man named Rich Poole walked into Small Bar and handed some beer over to Bruce Gray and Jack Granger. This began a brewing journey that started on a 200L kit through the back of that same bar, before developing into a cuckoo brewery operation known as Left Handed Giant. In the past seven years Left Handed Giant have brewed some of our go to beers. When we see them on the taps we always order a schooner or two. Alongside this, we have been inspired by their crowdfunding efforts, development of their brewpub, and ambitious approach to running a business. And we love having a drink with them! We’ve brewed a few collabs together, and run marathons in Northern Spain together. We are dead excited to have their beers in this month’s Gold boxes. Enjoy!
DREAM HOUSE Style
Pale Ale
ABV 5.9% Hops Citra Cryo + Mosaic + Vic Secret + Galaxy
A stone cold classic from our friends in Bristol. Introducing Dream House Pale Ale. With a dryhopping bill of Citra Cryo, Galaxy, Mosaic and Vic Secret, LHG’s house hazy pale has a sublime drinkability due to a beautifully balanced hop character. Sweet, fruity bursts harmonise with crisp pine and citrus flavours and result in a juicy, mouthwatering pale that really puts a smile on your face.

KING OF THE WOODLAND Style Imperial Stout + Honeycomb + Pistachio ABV 12.5% Hops
None
When we saw this beer on LHG’s list we had to sneak it into the Beer Club boxes! This Imperial Stout is brewed in collaboration with Het Uiltje, long term friends of North Brewing Co! The grist, made up mainly of Maris Otter and Carafa III, welcomes a generous helping of Cinder Toffee and lactose in the boil, creating a rich and roasty, yet sweet and indulgent malt base. The addition of Pistachio extract, introduced post-fermentation, adds depth and completes the flavour profile.

COFFEE GUIDE CAFETIERE
METHOD
The coffee included in your boxes has been ground for Cafetieres, however you are more than welcome to test out other brewing methods.
1.
Measure out 60g coarsely ground coffee per litre of water into a pre-warmed cafetiere
Scan here to learn more.
2.
Add water just off the boil (90-96c) and stir
3.
Leave to brew for 5-8 minutes
4.
Remove any floating grinds and plunge
5.
Drink immediately or transfer to a thermal carafe
TIP Vary steep times to taste; light roasted high altitude coffees can benefit from a longer brew whereas more traditional darker roasts are best brewed shorter.
