HELLO! Happy July! Welcome to this month’s beer club box. This month sees the first of our ‘picked for you’ beers, chosen based on your ratings of the beers in June’s box. We’re working hard to add extra features to our beer club, and are really excited to keep developing this option. We also have an exciting amount of new releases in the boxes. The sun is shining, the beer gardens are full, and the brew team are producing some storming beers. I’m particularly excited about our collaboration with Rivington. During the warmer months I’ve been looking for those Session IPAs and Pale Ales, and I think this one is really going to tick the Friday 5pm box. Around the brewery there have been a lot of cans of the North X Newbarns lager being drunk in the staff garden, and the latest beer in our collaboration series with Bundobust has been a hit.

On top of this we have two very, very exciting beers in this month’s boxes. First up is Double Transmission. Our signature IPA, turned up to 11. This one has flown off the pre-order list, so we’ll be rebrewing it next month for those that missed out. Olly and the team managed to get in there quickly and ring fence enough stock for the beer club. Great work! Secondly we have a collaboration with North Bar to celebrate its 25th birthday. 25 years old - how did that happen?! North is famous for having launched some iconic breweries in the UK, and was the first place to ever pour Sierra Nevada on tap. This 5.8% pale ale is a tribute to this beer, with an old school piney bitterness and takes a lot of us back to our first sips of craft beer. Enjoy the boxes! Love from North xxx

HAPPY 25 BIRTH

DAY NORTH BAR!

NEWS THIS MONTH SEES NORTH BAR TURN 25. WE’RE TAKING A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE AND LOOKING BACK AT THE BAR THAT STARTED IT ALL. In 1997 we took over a long, narrow unit on New Briggate and started building a bar. In the early days, the beer selection was much less adventurous. We sold Kronenbourg, Guinness and lots of Beamish Red. However, we started to build a reputation for brilliant service and great music in quirky surroundings. And the drinks selection quickly improved!

A trip to Belgium in the early 2000s opened our minds to what beer could be, and we started asking distributors to import the beers that we’d tried. We branded ourselves as a ‘world beer bar’ (cool at the time, sounds a bit naff now) and started to play. North Bar had begun its journey to become the first craft beer bar in the UK.

We became a test bed for new beers – filling our cellars with Belgian and German classics, alongside our first tastes of hoppy American craft beers. We were asked to take a punt on a new American beer and try it on tap for the first time called Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale – you might have heard of it! The beer launches continued to flow through, featuring classics such as Erdinger, Brooklyn Lager, and Duchesse de Bourgogne, and introducing drinkers to new UK craft beers like Magic Rock’s Cannonball.

Fast forward 25 years and North Bar is now the grandfather of craft beer bars in the UK. It launched some of the UK’s biggest craft breweries, including Magic Rock and Northern Monk. Poured countless exclusives, countless shots of tequila and persuaded a generation of drinkers to have ‘one more for the road’, it’s seen hundreds of friendships made, brought together couples who have gone to start families and inspired drinkers to go on to start their own breweries. And along the way… we started a brewery… what a joy this has been.

Brewed in collaboration with Newbarns Brewery, Leith. Newbarns have shared their expert knowledge classic styles with us and together, we’ve made a refreshing and incredibly satisfying Lager. Taking cues from Newbarns brewing processes, we’ve mashed with heritage malts, Haná, Chevalier and Chit to create a smooth, light and rounded body with a sweet back note and a constant crisp fold right through the middle. Whirlpool additions of whole leaf UK Ernest and German Callista provide subtle yellow stone fruit and herbaceous notes whilst the fermentation process and spunding livens up the yeast aroma bringing floral bouquets and freshly baked white bread.

A fine crush of Extra Pale Malt, wheat, flaked oats and dextrin brings a silky soft body with a sherbet-dry finish. We added a big dose of CRYO Idaho 7 and CRYO Talus in the whirlpool with a top up of the same during fermentation, backed up with Motueka and CRYO POP™ makes for lusciously bright and tropical pale ale. Double the Citra, double the Mosaic, double the Chinook and double the Denali! Massive tropical flavour, big punchy pine, rich juicy pineapple and a touch of dank character for balance.

Cascade

To celebrate North Bar’s 25th we’re having a party, with A LOT of beer! Looking at the history of North Bar, we’ve drawn inspiration from a true classic, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. North Bar was the first place in the UK to run Sierra Nevada’s beer through its lines, so it only made sense to pay tribute to a beer that revived the brewing industry in the states, made US hops famous and set so many people across the world onto their path to craft beer. Pale Malt and Crystal Malt make a crunchy full bodied base with a deep amber hue. We’ve made a modern twist in the recipe using fresh CRYO Cascade added at various stages throughout the boil and in true Sierra Nevada style, we added generous quantities of the freshest whole leaf Cascade in the whirlpool and dry hop. The result is a clean and fragrant bouquet of floral aroma and subtle spice with zippy zesty and juicy pink grapefruit and orange with a lingering bitter finish! VEGAN / CONTAINS BARLEY + WHEAT

NORTH x BUNDOBUST Style

Pineapple Lassi Sour

ABV

4.5%

Back with our buds at Bundobust, we’ve whipped up a brand new sour with the Indian Street Food Legends! The aim as always in our collaborations with Bundobust is to make a beer that is going to compliment the flavours in their expertly cooked dishes whilst also contrasting and taking off the heat a little. A pale base made with oats and lactose makes a for a soft and smooth base to build from. A touch of souring works with a gentle addition of lactose to create a rounded finish imitating peeled lemon rind. Fresh organic Pineapple Pureé further smooths it all out and sweetens it up with toasted coconut chips making for a creamy and tropical finish.

CONTAINS BARLEY + OATS + LACTOSE

Hops

Citra + Enigma + Simcoe

We are entering the Ultra Phase… A sumptuous smooth base of pale malt, wheat, naked oats and rolled oats with Citra, Enigma and Simcoe hops brings continuous blasts of flavour. A base note of tinned apricot halves and pithy zest springboards candied mango, white wine-gums and gooseberry with crushed pine needles, lemon peel and passionfruit finishing with a pinching bite. Soft, fluffy, rounded and laced with dazzling fresh tropical fruit flavour.

GUEST BREWERY WE CAUGHT UP WITH OUR FRIENDS AT PIG LOVE AT THEIR SUMMER POP UP, BY THE RIVER. NB

Tell us about Piglove By the River! Where it is, when you open and what you do!

PL

Piglove by the River is our summer pop-up venue! Working together with @cituuk we have managed to create an amazing open space perfect for the summer weather! Offering great beer in a chill area by the river. We serve Piglove beers as well as North Brewing beers. Also, we always have some nice Cider and soft drinks! We also have a food court area offering amazing local street food from all over Yorkshire.

NB

Can you tell us about the name Pig Love and how the idea came about?

PL

Piglove Brewing Co. is our indi craft brewery, based in Leeds. ‘Brave Brewing with Eccentric Taste’ is what we’re all about! Not content with simply being part of the craft brewing revolution, we want to push things forward in our own style. Originally hailing from the far-away lands of Venezuela, we add an Amazonic twist and wanderlust to all our beers. ‘Piglove’ comes from the Venezuelan expression ‘cochino amor’, which is used to describe a love for something that is so big, raw and passionate that it becomes filthy and absurd. For pigs it’s mud, for us it’s craft beer and brewing. There’s nothing we love more than getting messy in the brewery, and working on new ideas!

NB

Tell us about a product you’re currently stocking that you’re really excited about and that people NEED to come and try!

PL

We are stocking all our Piglove beers as well as some amazing beers from North Brew Co. It’s all awesome!

NB

What exciting plans do you have for 2022? – events – expansion – or just keeping on keeping on excelling in what you do!

PL

We are working on excelling in what we have and enjoying the summer as much as we can. and hosting some Jazz sessions once or twice a month on Sundays (4PM-6PM). Another plan that we are working on is potentially open during wintertime!
