HELLO! Hi everyone! Welcome back to your monthly digest of all things North! It’s been another busy month here at the brewery, we’re gearing up for a very busy summer of beer festivals! In June alone we’re pouring at 10 beer festivals, in the UK and overseas! Hopefully we’ll bump into a few of you! We’ve also been planning a very special event for July. If any of you know our history, you’ll know that the brewery came from humble beginnings as a small bar on New Briggate in Leeds. North Bar opened back in 1997 and this year turns 25 years old! A quarter of a century!? We have got a lot of great things planned!! We’ve been lucky enough to organise collaborations with some of craft brewings, most famous breweries and we have a super special event lined up that we are just a little bit excited about… North Bar has been lucky enough to collaborate with one of the godfathers

of craft brewing, Sierra Nevada, on not one but two beers made on their pilot kit. We’ve got a lovely and sessionable New Zealand Pale Ale with Knaresborough’s Roosters Brewing Co, a Fat Rascal inspired Imperial Stout with one of the Netherlands first craft breweries Brouwerij Kees and of course, we’ve chipped have in with a classic American Pale Ale made with whole cone Cascade hops! We also have Brooklyn Breweries esteemed Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver flying over for an exclusive tasting of some of Brooklyn’s incredibly rare Ghost Bottles too! See, we told you we have a lot planned! The party will be happening from July 1–3 all weekend long, we’ll be sharing more info with you very soon! In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this month’s beers and take care!

NORTH BEER CLUB, MEET OLLY, SOPHIE, CALLAN AND WILL!

One of the most important things about the beer club for us is building friendships and community, so we thought we’d take the time to introduce you to the people that make this delightful box (and many other delightful boxes) possible! It’s the web shop team!

MEET CALLAN!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORABLE BEER EXPERIENCE? It was when I tried a Fosters Spiced Rum lager, it was the first beer that I ever enjoyed drinking.

FAVORITE SPOT TO DRINK? Has to be Belgrave, great food and a sick rooftop

THIS MONTH’S BEER CLUB PICK? Neon Raptor - Triple Fruited. I’m a lover of all our sour beers.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE WITH A BEER? My first memorable experience having a drink was right after the first lockdown, I finally went out for my first pint and had a proper cold and creamy Guinness . It was in a beer garden in the sun and had felt like a long time coming to actually be able to go out for a drink with people.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT FOR A DRINK? I don’t think there’s many places better to have a drink than on a warm beach abroad. A cold pint in the hot weather just seems to be the best place to have a drink for me.

WHATS YOUR PICK OF THIS MONTH’S BEER CLUB BOX AND WHY? North x Cloudwater West Coast Pils! I love lager normally but this just has a little something extra.

MEET WILL!

MEET SOPHIE!

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT FOR A DRINK? My favourite spot to drink most recently would have to be my garden! I spent a lot of time over the past couple of years nurturing and growing my collection of plants and flowers. In lockdown, it was the only thing keeping me sane! But it’s a lovely wholesome experience, having a drink in this small oasis with friends and family.

WHATS YOUR PICK OF THIS MONTH’S BEER CLUB BOX AND WHY?

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE WITH A BEER? Like many others, I can’t exactly pinpoint my first beer experience (wink wink). But on a more serious note, I was standing in a crowd at a gig on a hot summer’s eve waiting for The Cure to take centre stage. I remember having a crisp, chilled pint of Heineken in one hand, whilst embracing my friends in the other.

Stillwater’s Rose Gold is the first sour beer I’ve really loved. The flavours are delicate, but you still get refreshing citrus and dark berry notes in abundance!

MEET OLLY! WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE WITH A BEER? I got into the rabbit hole that is beer through drinking real ale when I turned *cough* eighteen, as it was the only decent thing to drink where I grew up. I lived next door to the small but wellrespected Hopback brewery, and so would drink a lot of their core Blonde ale ‘Summer Lightning’, of which some bottles still make it up to supermarkets in Leeds. The first beer that really made me sit up and think was Cloudwater DIPA v.3, I remember thinking just how different it was to anything I had drank before.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT FOR A DRINK? I’m a sucker for a tasty lager (see North x Cloudwater!) and so Brownhill & Co never disappoints with a huge variety of heritage lagers and continental classics on tap and in the fridges. Otherwise, you’ll probably find me at The Fenton for a game of pool, or North bar abusing my staff discount. Come say hi!

WHATS YOUR PICK OF THIS MONTH’S BEER CLUB BOX AND WHY? The West Coast Pils is seriously good, so I’ve made sure to put a case away for hot evenings. However, I may have to give this month to the Var Var Smoked Stout! It is somehow so drinkable despite its ABV and rich layers of coffee, sticky treacle and smooth oaky smoke.

PICKED FOR YOU WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU LOVE TO DRINK! Log in to your members account on shop.northbrewing.com to rate beers from June’s box, as well as other North classics! El Dorado + Sultana + Chinook

Once a year we put the pedal to the metal and ride with Paria! Cyclists of Yorkshire mount their two wheeled road eating machines and crunch West Yorkshire’s hills on a 60 mile round trip from our brewery and back finishing with victory pints! (Emphasis on the pints.) Paria have an undying love for IPA, especially Transmission. Each year we whip together a juiced up IPA guaranteed to quench the thirst of our riders and dissolve the feeling of aching muscles! This year’s Paria IPA brings a splendour of pale and cara gold malts as well as oats and wheat to bring a subtly sweet soft and chewy malt base malts for us to lay on a hefty dose of hardcore hops. El Dorado brings lusciously soft, fleshy pear and honey melon whilst Sultana and Chinook hops boast big hits of succulent pineapple, bright citrus, a lasting resinous pine finish and zingy bitter finish.

NORTH x CLOUDWATER Style

West Coast Pils

ABV

5%

Hops

Idaho 7 + Simcoe

Made in collaboration with Manchester’s Cloudwater Brew Co, we’ve blended two styles of beer that we find are some of the most refreshing. West Coast meet German Pils. A classic German Pilsner grist made up of pils malt, Haná and Chit makes for a delightfully light, crisp and sparkling base that thrives with a light dusting of Idaho 7 and Simcoe hops in the whirlpool. We fermented nice and slow with our house lager yeast, allowing each aspect of the beer to stand alone and shine. The result is a fresh and instantly refreshing West Coast Pils. Crisp, bready and herbaceous but countered with subtle classic west coast attributes; bitterness, fresh hops, pine and tropical fruit.

NORTH x VAR VAR Style

Barrel-aged Smoked Imperial Stout

ABV

Hops

None

Brewed in collaboration with our friends at Var Var Brewery in Ukraine, together we’ve brewed a strong and robust Imperial Stout made to replicate the flavours of Ukraine’s famed smoked prunes. We’ve used a fine spread of dark roast malts as well as smoked malt making a rich and sweet base with incredible depth of flavour. We then let it rest in a blend of Laphroaig Whisky and second fill Bourbon and Whisky barrels deepening its pallet. Luxurious dark roast coffee, essences of liquorice, caramelised muscovado and molasses are met with a boozy back tone of sweet bourbon and aged oak and an unmistakable smooth smoke flavour. 10p per can / 15p per pint goes to DEC Ukraine Appeal.

A beer that needs no introduction, it’s Transmission, our beloved core range IPA! You know what they say about IPA? - Freshest is bestest! This Transmission is FRESH! Resinous pine, pithy pink grapefruit zest and fleshy ripe pineapple combines with a soft haze of juicy stone fruits and sweet mango. Transmission is an award winning IPA and our core range headliner. A beer we’re incredibly proud of and one that stands up against the best brewing has to offer!

NORTH x BRICK Style

Honeyberry Stout

ABV

9%

Hops

None

Brewed in collaboration with our friends at Brick Brewery, London. Following on from our first collaboration with Brick Brewery ‘In Nonsense is Strength’ we started with Honeyberry. We then got to work thinking of what kind of beer we could work it into. An all time classic beer is Titanic’s Plum Porter, so here we are, turning it up and presenting you with a big Honeyberry Stout. A spread of specialty malts made up of Extra Pale, Black, Chocolate, Brown, Crystal, Special B, Roast Wheat, Munich and Naked Oats create a base full of chewy toffee, delicate coffee and chocolate flavours. It’s rich and robust, but cutting through the middle and surrounding your pallet comes Honeyberry. With it’s sweet, aromatic honey, juicy blueberry flavours and that roasty base coming back for the finish, settling down with the fruits for a lasting finish.

NEON RAPTOR x NORTH: TRIPLE FRUITED RAPTOR Style

Fruited Gose

ABV

4.5%

This long overdue collaboration with our friends at Neon Raptor is a thirst-quenching sour gose style beer. The physalis, lychee, ginger and salt provide a perfect balance of fruity sweetness, tart juiciness, gentle salinity and a mild spiciness at the end. It pours a very appealing honey orange with a soft gentle carb. The ginger strikes the nose first but it’s the physalis that hits the tongue first. The physalis, known as a goldenberry, a groundcherry a cape gooseberry and many other names, has flavours of kumquat, pineapple and maybe a hint of strawberry. It pairs beautifully with the sweet creaminess of the lychee and is rounded off with a hit of ginger that lingers until your next sip. Drink cold in a garden amongst friends and embrace this slightly unknown fruit cocktail.

CONTAINS BARLEY + LACTOSE

NEON RAPTOR NAUGHTY LUGGUAGE Style

NEIPA

ABV

6.8%

Hops

Citra + Simcoe + Mosaic

Naughty Luggage was one of Neon Raptor’s first beers and over the years it has been tweaked in their quest to make the best New England IPA. The ubiquitous hop bill of Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic has almost become a meme but there’s a reason for the popularity. They give equal respect to the three hops, with no one overpowering the other. There’s flavours of melon, ripe peach, grapefruit, dark berries and plenty of mango. The aroma is a tropical sucker punch but in beer form. Plenty of oats and wheat in the grist give loads of mouthfeel and there’s some distinct bitterness at the back end, you’re drinking an IPA after all! This beer is brewed to cross borders, travel through time and confuse dinosaurs!

VEGAN / CONTAINS BARLEY + OATS + WHEAT

NEON RAPTOR x F**K CANCER BEER PROJECT Style

NEIPA

ABV

6.5%

Hops

Bru-1 + Citra + Citra Lupomax + Chinook

Neon Raptor were contacted by the F**k Cancer Beer Project about making a hazy, hop forward, New England IPA and immediately reached out to Barth Haas hop merchants to see what magic they could supply us with. It’s their first use of Bru-1 so expect all of the pineapple. It was also their first use of Citra Incognito Lupomax, a hop liquid that reduces the need for a dry hop and all that vegetative matter, but still supplies the aromas you want, especially with citra. This is a slightly dry and very moreish IPA with some white grape and kiwi in addition to the dominant force that is pineapple. FCBP was started as a cancer awareness project and has already had some great collaborations from across the world.

VEGAN / CONTAINS BARLEY + OATS + WHEAT

GUEST BREWERY

NEON RAPTOR IS ALL ABOUT PRODUCING FANTASTIC BEERS FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY.

NEONRAPTORBREW

It started several years ago by brewing some very small batches on the kitchen hob with a Wilko’s stock pot, some garden hose and a copper pipe. They turned out pretty awesome, so we decided to see how it matched up against the rest of the home brewing world by entering it into a competition – the Brewdog

Nottingham homebrew contest 2015. The beer which we entered won and gave us the encouragement we needed to give brewing a go for real. The first beer we brewed was a newer, better version of the homebrew beer which won the competition. This beer now goes by the name “Endangered”. It is a 6.6% abv porter matured with authentic Kentucky bourbon, American oak and Madagascan vanilla (yes, it’s great!). We started out as a cuckoo/gypsy brewery producing on a small scale since April 2016 and have sent a few different beers out there. It started on a small 300L kit at the back of the

Stumble Inn in Long Eaton in 2016. At the end of 2016/start of 2017 we moved on to use the Black Hole brewery kit in Burton-upon-Trent producing 1000L at time. During that time, we found what went on to become our new home in Nottingham at Sneinton Market. We finally moved into Sneinton Market in October 2018 and got the first beers, from our very own brew kit, out on sale in March 2018. Since then we have been doing well and are looking to go through an expansion in 2019. This means more beer, better beer and the ability to reproduce some of our great brews on a big enough scale for you to enjoy with us!
