NCRS NORTH CENTRAL CHAPTER Dave Murphy Editor 279 Lily Pond Lane Vadnais Heights, MN 55127 MAIL TO:

1st QUARTER 2011 EDITION

Check out the details of the Sportsman Award on the NCRS website at www.ncrs.org/awards.html#sportsman PRESIDENT‟S CORNER January 2011 newsletter Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season. This past fall was very kind and forgiving to those of us that like to drive our Corvettes right up until the time the roads get salted and ice covered. Several members drove their Corvette to the last tech session of the year…..on November 20th. It‟s really nice to have an extended driving season occasionally and I suspect that some Corvettes did not get put away for the winter until December. Now, we can only hope that spring comes early this year! With 2010 in the history books it‟s time to take a look at the 2011 Corvette calendar and start planning for this year. Of particular note …… the “Heart of America” NCRS Regional is held in Joplin, Missouri April 28 - 30, the NCRS National is held in Novi, Michigan July 17 - 22 and our Chapter meet held on August 20. It‟s not too early to begin planning to attend these not-to-miss events. And if you like to drive your Corvette, driving to these three events, participating in the Sportsman Award Program, will earn you 10 Sportsman points. That‟s half of the total points needed over a three year period to earn the prestigious NCRS Sportsman Award.

Shifting to 2012, our Chapter will host the North Central Regional meet to be held in Rochester, MN June 7 - 9, 2012. We need member involvement in hosting a successful event, so please consider donating some of your time. We really need your help. Contact me or any Board member if you‟re interested in being a part of the 2012 Regional. Welcome Dave Murphy as the new Chapter Newsletter Editor. Dave is looking for articles of interest to publish in the Crossed Flags newsletter. Tech articles are always in high demand. Share your experiences with the rest of the membership by sending in a write up or even just bullet points and a couple of photos on a learning experience of special interest. Finally, a simple and very sincere Thank You to the outgoing Board Members that have selflessly donated so much of their personal discretionary time in successfully managing the affairs of this Chapter. Your countless hours of focus and effort have left an indelible positive impact on this organization…….Denny Adams, Don Goldsbury, Jeff Goldsbury and Paul Wozny.

Membership Update By Jim Fenske, Membership Chairman 2011 is here and most of our chapter members have sent me their renewal dues. If youâ€&#x;re one of the few who have not renewed as yet, send me your check ASAP. Its not too late to get the special chapter calendar that is included with renewal. During the last few weeks, we had three new members join the chapter. Gerry and Sharon Gartner of Bloomington have owned their 1966 Sting Ray coupe for 37 years. Fellow member, Dave Gooley, influenced them to join the chapter. Sarah MacRae recently joined the NCRS national and has now joined the North Central Chapter. She lives in Woodbury and has owned five Corvettes in the past. She is apparently a diehard Corvette fan as she now in the process of acquiring a 1969 427 coupe. Our newest member, Hans Skalle lives in the western suburbs and had a 1958 and 1963 SWC fuelie. Many of us met Hans and saw his beautifully restored black 1963 coupe at the November tech session at Long Lake Collision. Welcome to the North Central Chapter!

Remit your 2011 dues to North Central Chapter NCRS and send to: Jim Fenske, 765 Dickey Lake Dr, Long Lake, Minnesota 55356. ( ) I am sending $25.00 dues and elect to receive the Crossed Flags newsletter via the Internet. ( ) I am sending $30.00 dues and will receive the Crossed Flags newsletter hardcopy mailed to me and will also receive email notification of a new issue. In order to keep our database up to date, if your address, phone numbers, email address or Corvettes you own changed, please email those updates to me at jfenske240@aol.com or call me at 952-476-4051. Newsletter – Don reported that Jeff will be publishing the 4th quarter newsletter next week. He reminded Bob that he needs to have someone write an article and take pictures for each tech session to use in the newsletter. Treasury –We’re solvent. Activities – Paul has nothing planned. We discussed asking members to plan a single event and host it. Jim Neilson will send an email to the members; and he offered to host a Saturday event in June. Bill suggested a day trip for a Leinenkugel brewery tour. Don has the arrangements set for our Winter Social on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Poor Richard’s Common House in Bloomington. Bob will handle the quiz, similar to last year. The registration form will be in the newsletter and Steve will email to members next month. We will again have a silent auction and Don will talk to the near-by hotel about holding a block of rooms. There was discussion about inviting National members in the area who do not belong to the Chapter. It would be good way for them to learn about our Chapter and hopefully join. New Business – Paul let us know that jackets are available again. He will take a look and let us know. Don is looking for a member to take over the Winter Social and also be the contact for embroidery work, before he moves. Meeting adjourned at 9:00. Respectfully submitted, Val Crosby, Secretary North Central Chapter Board Meeting Minutes January 6, 2011 Members present: Jim Neilson, Mark Ogren, Bob Lund, Steve McWhirter, Jim Fenske, Bill Kohl, Don Goldsbury, Dave Murphy, and Dale & Val Crosby.

Members absent: None Meeting held at the Steve & Pam’s. Jim called the meeting to order. Minutes of the November meeting were approved as written. Don is ready for the Winter Social on Saturday night with 32 signed up to attend. Treasurer’s Report – Steve presented the 2010 Income & Expense report. There was discussion on the possibility of investing in a CD. Steve asked that all members give him a list of expected expenses for 2011 so that he can prepare a budget. We discussed the 2011 events calendar and made a few corrections so that Dave can publish it in the newsletter and Bill can put it on the website. We discussed the newsletter cut-offs and agreed to change those so that the full calendar quarter can be covered in each newsletter. Judging – Dale indicated that the next judging school will be in March at our house and will be a continuation of the December session, using the new CD on mid-year parts. Website – there was discussion about updating the site with pictures and articles of our events. It was agreed that the event host should write an article and someone else should take pictures. Bob will work this out for the tech sessions. Pictures and articles should be sent to Dave or Bill and they will work together to publish. Newsletter – Dave has been trained by Jeff and is about ready to publish the 1st quarter newsletter. He requested that we over take pictures of the events and he will choose what to use for the newsletter. We discussed some possible changes. Membership - Jim reported that we’re at 75 paid members. Jim expects that several more will renew yet. We have four new members. They are: Hans Skalle, Sarah MacRae, Gerry & Sharon Gartner, and our new Regional Rep, Bill Braun. Welcome to all of you! Tech – Bob is still finalizing the January tech session and will be sending an email soon. We dis cussed possibilities for the upcoming months. Bob has a couple vendors he would like to use for events and Jim Fenske said he believed

our best attended events were held at vendors. Activities – Jim Neilson will host a Fun Run on June 4th, details to be worked out. Several members are heading to the Joplin Regional in April and he suggested that someone head up a road tour for that. On March 12th we’ll be making River Rat Chili at Bill & Stephanie Kohl’s for the March 13th Chili Challenge. The more the merrier to help make that chili and the Challenge is a fun event with the local Corvette clubs. April 9th will be the Casual Night Out. Crosby’s will host the event and we’ll probably go back to Ol’ Mexico in Roseville where we had such a good turnout in the past. Bill will look at a Saturday in September to drive to Chippewa Falls, WI for the Leinenkugel tour. Mark is planning the road tour to the National, which will be in Novi, Michigan in July. Old Business – Jim Neilson reported that Paul did check on the jackets again and we won’t be able to order again. Don asked that someone take over the embroidery and Bob offered to handle that. Don is also looking for someone to take over the Winter Social. National request certain information at the beginning of each year and this year asked what assistance our Chapter could use from National. The two suggestions were to update the manuals more frequently and that there be more transparency of National finances to the Chapters. New Business – Bill suggested that we need more space to be able to archive tech session pictures and articles on the website. The Members Only page was discussed again. It was agreed that we would remove board members’ email addresses from the newsletter, so those are not available on the website. Bill will talk to Bernice about the cost of these changes. We discussed the board meeting frequency and location. Dave will check on places where we

can meet, other than member’s homes, without expense to the Chapter. Dale suggested that we have a general membership meeting at least once a quarter. This discussion will be continued at the next meeting. Meeting adjourned. Thanks to Pam for the great desserts! Respectfully submitted, Val Crosby

2010 FALL COLOR RUN September 17 – 19, 2010 By Jim Neilson A WONDERFUL TIME WAS HAD BY ALL! What a great time we had spending a long weekend in the Alexandria, MN area. After meeting up for breakfast in Maple Grove we headed north on I-94 ……. past a military convoy that looked to be decked out for the Afgan War…… and after a couple of rest area stops, and the obligatory stop at the local Harley Davidson dealership?? (OK, who‟s idea was that Paul? I almost bought a bike!!) then in time for a leisurely lunch at Bella‟s on Broadway in downtown Alexandria. OUTSTANDING! We did eventually end up at the Arrowwood Resort on Darling Lake. Five couples made the cruise and enjoyed the casual elegance of Arrowwood. As luck would have it…..we just happened to be there during the Grape Stomp and Wine Festival held at nearby Carlos Creek Winery. Knowing that large quantities of wine and Corvettes do not mix well, we took advantage of the shuttle bus that ran to and from Arrowwod and the Grape Stomp. Now I didn‟t actually see any of our group in the vats, stomping grapes, but rumor has it……well, you‟ll just have to ask Gene yourself – We cruised the countryside and around the lakes in Douglas County. Five Corvettes in a row. Of course, we had frequent stops for refreshments and food along the way. We know how to enjoy ourselves! Lunch at Bug-A-Boo Bay was AWESOME!! We made a visit to the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum for a great tour on vintage boats, motors, boating equipment and accessories. It was an incredible display that included several iconic vintage boats like a 1955 Chris Craft Cobra, a 1937 Garwood Sedan, an original Larson Falls Flyer, a 1929 Chris Craft Sedan, a 1959 Chris Craft Silver Arrow and others. Even a vintage wooden ice boat! It was really a spectacular exhibit. As I was leaving the Museum I walked through a kiosk display near the entrance and stopped to read about the local history of wooden boats on the local lakes, and about the local lake resorts. That‟s when I heard Sandy Oster exclaim “Oh My GOSH”. I walked around one kiosk to find Sandy staring in disbelief at a kiosk highlighting the Maryland Hotel and Resort on Lake Mary, a lake which is very close to where we were there in Alexandria. Sandy‟s relatives Kittil and Anna Skavanger had owned that resort in the 40‟s as well as her Uncle Ernie and Mary Tollifson in the 50‟s. Sandy has many wonderful memories of her times at the Maryland Resort as a child. What a great, unexpected surprise for Sandy and Roger Oster to discover this tribute to her family and the Maryland Hotel and Resort at the Museum! Sunday came too soon….. We enjoyed a late breakfast together then back on the road. No more Interstate freeway today, we took the back roads home. Ending up on Highway 55 west of the Cities we eventually went our separate ways home. Another GREAT run in the record books.
