Moonlight Amphitheatre We’re Giving Away Tickets The Moonlight Amphitheatre is one of Southern California’s finest outdoor music and theatre venues. Year after year Moonlight Stage Productions produces Broadway-caliber live theatrical plays and musicals. The atmosphere, under the summer moon and stars sipping a glass of wine, along with a superb stage, the finest sound system, quality lighting, and an orchestra pit, you are sure to always have a memorable evening. If you’ve never been to the Moonlight, you are seriously missing out. Aida June 14 – July 1 Winner of four 2000 Tony Awards, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida is an epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal chronicling the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country, Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, the soldier they both love. As their forbidden love blossoms, Aida is forced to weigh
her heart against the responsibility she faces as leader of her people. The love Aida and Radames have for one another transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity. With an unforgettable score featuring soaring ballads and rousing choral numbers, Aida is a rock version of the Verdi opera. The Little Mermaid July 19 – August 5 Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a beautiful love story for the ages. Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue Prince Eric in the world above and bargains with evil sea witch Ursula to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems and Ariel must enlist the help of her colorful friends Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian
the crab to restore order under the sea. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture hearts with its classic characters and irresistible songs. Moonlight Amphitheatre is located in Brengle Terrace Park at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. For more information call (760) 724-2110 or visit www.moonlightstage.com. North Coast Repertory Theatre We’re Giving Away Tickets! The Spitfire Grill, A Musical May 31 – June 25 Honest and emotional, this heartfelt musical tells the engaging tale of a young woman with an uncertain past. Filled with inspirational melodies, and an emotionally soaring score, this all-American musical serves up an abundance of warmth, spirit and goodwill. An Evening with Groucho June 12 – 13 Award-winning actor/director Frank Ferrante re-creates his acclaimed one-man comedy with music celebrating America’s greatest comedian, Groucho Marx. Audiences will feel as if Groucho is really back, as Ferrante sings, dances, tells stories and performs classic Groucho routines and one-liners. Tales of the
legendary Marx family and Groucho’s Hollywood peers, Charlie Chaplin and W.C. Fields, are sprinkled throughout a show that is perfect for all ages. At This Evening’s Performance July 12 – August 6 This uproarious comedy is about a Bohemian theatre troupe who finds itself performing in an Eastern European police state. However, there is more drama backstage than onstage, with romantic entanglements, political intrigue and a wildly funny climax. It’s a laugh a minute, and audiences will leave the theatre reveling in the merriment. Tuesday Night Comics July 18 Tuesday Night Comics, presented by Prayer Dudz, is arguably the funniest night of comedy in San Diego. Host Mark Christopher Lawrence taps into
La Jolla Playhouse
Pageant of the Masters July 7 – August 31 The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (living pictures), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. A live narrator serves as a guide through the story of each living picture accompanied by the music of a professional orchestra. This year’s theme is “The Grand Tour.” In the 17th and 18th centuries, the desire to experience the world’s great art firsthand inspired the European tradition of continental travel on the Grand Tour. Inspired to set out on pilgrimages by land and sea to the great cultural centers of Europe, and eventually the globe, those early travelers often risked life and limb to stand in the presence
of masterpieces. It is that original dedication to expanding one’s horizons by visiting the great art centers of Europe that fueled Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy’s excitement and research of this summer’s production. The Pageant takes place at the Irvine Bowl, which is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach. For more information call (800) 487-3378 or visit www. pageanttickets.com.

Escape to Margaritaville Through June 25 Featuring both original songs and beloved Jimmy Buffett classics, this new musical is the story of a part-time bartender, part-time singer, and fulltime charmer named Tully who thinks he’s got life all figured out, until a beautiful career-minded tourist steals his heart and makes him question everything. At the Old Place July 5 – 30 In her mid-40s and facing a breaking point, a literature professor returns to her childhood home in Virginia only to discover two young people camped out on her lawn. This keenly-observed, intimate new play about the search for roads not taken is directed by Playhouse Associate Artistic Director Jaime Castañeda. Kill Local August 1 – 27 Sheila and her sister Abigail work for their mother’s small family business. Sheila’s job used to be a source of joy and exhilaration; now she’s questioning everything. When you’re an assassin, being uninspired means getting sloppy, and getting sloppy means getting killed. Kill Local is a pitch-black comedy about blood ties, revenge and trying to get unstuck —especially when your life is dedicated to ending others’. Home Sellers Advisory Advisory #1: Beware of the “High Price” listing presentation. These agents have one goal and that is to get a signed listing contract by presenting an unrealistic high list price, and knowing that the seller will eventually have to lower the list price to sell their home. Two clever responses can help sellers mitigate this scenario. Advisory #2: Beware of the “Universal Phone Call” that goes something like this; “Hello, I have a buyer interested in buying your home, are you interested in selling?” Truth is very few of these solicitation calls have a specific buyer. If you answer yes to their question, then simply ask them to put their buyer’s name on a “single party” listing agreement, so your obligation to pay a reduced commission is only if that specific buyer buys your home. Advisory #3: Beware of the “Great Promise”. These agents convincingly tell you that they list and sell most of their own listings, with no other agent involved . . . and because of this, they will lower the total listing commission from 5 or 6% to 3% when they sell your home themselves. The truth is, very few agents list and sell their own listings! This is easily verified by an MLS printout of SOLD listings that clearly shows the listing and selling offices involved in all the sales. Are they the same offices? . . . probably not. Advisory #4: Beware of a lower than normal commission posted in the MLS to “buyer’s broker”. While commissions are negotiable, money motivates sales people. Buyer’s agents typically expect a minimum of 2.5% for selling a median priced home . . . and they deserve it! If less than 2.5% is proposed by your listing agent, ask them for an MLS printout of the listings for your neighborhood that will clearly show the commissions paid to other buyer brokers. Rarely will you see less than 2.5%. You want maximum agent motivation to sell your home by offering at least 2.5% to the buyer’s broker. This advisory to home sellers is provided as a courtesy by David Boe, owner and broker of Boe Real Estate; sharing 30-years of local broker experience from selling over 1,000 homes. David Boe personally handles all the negotiations and required paperwork. David Boe has saved his buyers and sellers thousands of dollars with reduced commissions to sellers and rebates to buyers. You can reach David Boe at his direct line at (760) 846-0486 or visit www.DavidBoe. com. CalBRE#00672393.

Petunias to Tomatoes Green Thumb Super Garden Center is the place to find bright, cheerful, warm-season color to beautify your garden. Petunias fill the bill with many months of nonstop bloom. Green Thumb has dozens of colors, with something for every garden and gardener’s taste. Success is easy with plenty of sunshine, regular deadheading and monthly feeding. Petunias are remarkably drought tolerant. A weekly deep soak is usually sufficient. To keep budworms at bay, treat regularly with BT or Spinosad. Green Thumb is also ‘Tomato Central’ with scores of varieties to choose from and all the supplies necessary for success. All plants are non-GMO, from modern hybrids to organics, and tiny cherries to huge heirlooms from around the world. Given some basic requirements, all are easy to grow. Tomatoes have large root systems, so give them
plenty of space in the garden or container. Rich soil and regular feeding are essential, as the tomato is a hearty eater. Because they’re not so greedy about water, and too much dampness can contribute to tomato diseases, let your tomato tell you when it’s thirsty. Wait until it wilts in the morning then water thoroughly. Wilting in the afternoon can be a reaction to heat, not necessarily dryness, so wait and recheck the next morning. Cage or stake and pinch side shoots to control growth. Examine regularly for tomato hornworms. Clip their Free Petunia 6-Pack Coupon from either their ad or their coupon on our coupon pages, or download their coupon from http://northcountysun.com/ san-marcos-coupon/. Maximum 6 Packs. Visit Green Thumb Super Garden Center at 1019 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos. (760) 744-3822.
Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge!) The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator person opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I
opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me who told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

Bushfire Kitchen
Looking for a special place to take dad on Father’s Day or before a fireworks show on July 4th? If you’re a fan of Urban Plates, then you’ll absolutely love Bushfire Kitchen. Now open in Del Mar, locals have quickly discovered that this place is a real winner. It’s located in the Beach Side Shopping Center (next to Starbucks) on Del Mar Heights Road. With 4-5 star ratings on Yelp and Trip Advisor, they specialize in farm fresh food made the old-fashion way. Everything is made from scratch, using the finest ingredients and cooked with bold flavors. The Zagat review states “Organic, grass-fed BBQ is the name of the game at these popular ‘cue specialists in La Costa and now Del Mar, serving grass-fed hamburgers, antibiotic-free chicken and locally sourced vegetables, alongside scratch-made breads and dressings.” We give Bushfire high ratings for quality, healthy, organic, humanely raised food with bold flavors and affordable prices. Bushfire serves breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner. If you’re a coffee fan, start your morning with a cup of gourmet coffee with beans from Zumbar Coffee of Sorrento Valley, ground fresh daily. Try a frothy steamed espresso latte for only $3.75, with an order of Eggs Benedict or French Toast. For lunch and dinner awaken your taste buds with their tender, slow-braised Angus Beef Brisket or their Chipotle Short Ribs. Their slow-braise oven cooks meats overnight and ensures the
meat falls off the bone. Their 1/2 lb. succulent burgers are made from fresh, never frozen, organic grass-fed beef or lamb. We recommend The Californian that comes with sharp cheddar, local avocado, wild baby arugula, tomato, house-pickled red onions and basil pesto aioli sauce. Dine inside or on their comfortable and exquisitely lit outdoor patio complete with outdoor bar. They have 12 craft beers on tap and have a nice wine selection. They have recently installed the first Stubborn soda taps in San Diego. These delicious sodas are naturally flavored without artificial sweeteners and no high fructose corn syrup. Try the orange hibiscus or agave vanilla cream. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and their bread, rolls and buns are baked fresh in-house daily. Side dishes include baked sweet potato, organic brown rice, Himalayan Basmati rice, garlic mashed potatoes, bacon and baked beans and cooked-to- order fries. Try their premium hot sides and cold salads. One of our favorites is their Quinoa, Beet and Wild Arugula Salad. Keeping the earth’s ecology in mind, to-go boxes are made from recycled cardboard. Bushfire is a warm, family-friendly, healthy environment, that you will be happy to call your second home. Del Mar Bushfire Kitchen is located at 2602 Del Mar Heights Rd, Del Mar 92014. Call (858) 461-0946 or visit www.bushfirekitchen.com for their other locations.
The Godfather
We don’t often cover restaurants outside of North County but we think our readers will like to know about this one. The Godfather, a traditional gourmet Italian restaurant and piano lounge, in Kearny Mesa, is ZAGAT RATED “Top 25 Italian Restaurants In The Nation.” It’s no easy task to get such high praise from ZAGAT, but our experience at The Godfather was something to let people know about. Serving wonderful Italian cuisine and fine wine since 1974, you will be greeted at the door with a smile, and waited on, hand and foot. While being seated, you’ll hear live and mellow piano ballads while enjoying the ambience of high ceilings, classic wall portraits, and dimmed lighting. You will be handed a wine list and an extensive menu to choose from. Start with an antipasti such as Fromaggio e Olivi or their Capricce. They have some amazing specialties such as their Speciale Dello Chef Isidoro, which is chef Isadoro’s original
seasoned and breaded veal stuffed with Prosciutto, Mozzarella, tomatoes and sautéed onions, baked in a wine/marinara sauce. We also recommend their Penne Alla Puttanesca. There are a million recipes for this dish, but The Godfather’s is unique. Theirs consists of penne pasta in fresh tomato sauce with olives, capers, fresh basil, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and fresh oregano. Very nice. We also recommend their Linguine Al Vongole with a delicious white clam sauce or their Linguine Ai Frutti Di Mare which is a seafood mixture of lobster, clams, shrimp, mussels, calamari and fish, also in either a red or white sauce. The Godfather is open Mon. – Fri. for lunch and every night for dinner. They have a wonderful wine selection and a full bar. They are located at 7878 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego 92111. Call (858) 5601747 or visit www.godfatherrestaurant.com.

If you’re from Chicago or the mid-west, then you most likely know about Rosati’s Pizza. The Chicago-style deep dish Italian pizza of Ferdinand Rosati was originated when he opened his restaurant on Taylor Street in Chicago in 1906, a hundred and ten years ago. Back then, the pizza was old-world with tomato sauce served on crispy bread. In 1927 Ferdinand’s son, Saverio, opened a Rosati’s on Pulaski Street. Skip ahead to 1964. That was when Saverio’s sons took over, opened ten locations, and now have close to 200 restaurants nationwide. Authentic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza has two main ingredients: Italian tomato sauce and Mozzarella cheese. This delicious combo is baked inside a deep-dish crust. You can order yours this authentic way; or you can add an assortment of toppings. It’s important to point out that other deep-dish pizzas have a doughy, thick crust. Rosati’s deepdish crust is not doughy, but actually light and crispy; and so is the bottom crust of their pizza. It’s amazing! We don’t know how they do this; but it’s a special craft to make deep-dish with a crispy crust. Their deep-dish pizza is mouth watering with mounds of gooey Mozzarella
and topped with Pomodoro tomatoes. It’s something you must add to your bucket list. One word of caution: it takes about 30-45 minutes to bake this pie perfectly; so please plan accordingly. They also serve Chicago-style thin crust pizza, as well as gluten-free thin crust pizza! Rosati’s offers build-your-own pasta, specialty pastas, calzone, salads, and desserts. Their pizza is world-famous and so are their signature sandwiches; e.g., try their signature Combo Sausage and Beef. It’s the real deal! They have over 30 local craft beer taps. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3-7pm. They have beer and wine specials and 1/2 off appetizers. Bring the family and friends and enjoy a real Chicago-style meal indoors; or, on a warm summer night, dine on their spacious patio. Clip a $5 OFF or a $10 OFF coupon from their ad or from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/ category/coupons/. Not valid with other offers or specials. Must present coupon. Rosati’s Pizza is located at 337 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas 92024. They offer local delivery and catering. Call ahead 760-452-2007.

Located in the Scripps Trident Plaza next to Starbucks, Ikura Sushi & Ramen offers an extensive menu of sashimi, nigiri sushi, cut rolls, specialty rolls, spicy baked rolls, fresh hot ramen noodle bowls, udon, and yakisoba (fried noodles). It is sure to satisfy your discriminating palate. We highly recommend their Fire of Love roll. Inside is imitation crab, cucumber and avocado, and outside is baked salmon topped with their dynamite sauce. The tangy and creamy flavors will be a festival in your
mouth. They have a huge assortment of specialty and baked rolls. Look at their sushi list and find all cut rolls are highlighted; you’ll get 50% off. They don’t have their own delivery service, but you can get delivery from grubhub.com. Check out their daily lunch specials, served from 11am to 3pm, that come with salad, miso soup, rice, and an appetizer. Clip their coupon from their ad and get your choice of a FREE spicy tuna roll, crunchy roll, (4) piece egg roll, or boba drink. Minimum $12 purchase and must present coupon. Patron–Tortilleria and Carniceria
We want everyone in North County to know where to find the best authentic Mexican tacos (.99 cents); hot, fresh, handmade daily tortillas (10 for $2.99); made-fresh-daily tamales ($1.89); and everything you’ll ever want or need for daily meals or big celebrations. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans already know how amazing this place is. Try their food and you will be back often. Why go to the supermarket and buy mass-produced tortillas, when you can go to Patron and get freshly made, piping hot tortillas? The best time for hot tortillas is around 4-5pm. Why pay more for tacos when you can get tasty and authentic tacos for under a dollar? If you’re a student at Palomar College or Cal State San Marcos, live nearby in San Elijo Hills, or anywhere near San Marcos Blvd. and Twin Oaks Valley Rd. (near the San Marcos Post Office or San Marcos Civic Center) and you love authentic, fresh Mexican food, you’ll love Patron. If you are craving real Mexican food, why not eat and shop where Mexican people go! They have an assortment of Agua Frescas which
are fresh fruit-infused water drinks, including horchata (a cinnamon and rice drink), guacamole and salsa made fresh daily, Mexican cheeses, canned goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, including locally-grown tomatoes, avocados, and lemons, papayas, and a great butcher shop with chicken, steak, goat, pork, and beef. Buy your carne asada here! Every morning, Patron customers pick up delicious, hot tamales, and hot, hand-made tortillas. They have different kinds of tamales, including: cheese and pepper (a little spicy); shredded beef; shredded pork; and chicken. For your taco meat, we recommend Birria, a flavorful beef or goat stewed meat. Top off your taco with red or green salsa, Mexican avocado sauce, cheese, onions, and fresh sliced lime. They sell out of tamales and tortillas every day; so get there early! Clip their .99 cent Taco Coupon (good every day!) from our coupon pages or download from http://northcountysun.com/category/coupons/. Patron is located at 204 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos 92078. They prepare plates, salads, sandwiches, fish & chips and chowder, along with a selection of wine, beer, and soft drinks. We highly recommend their grilled fish plates and their beer-battered fish and chips. Top Choice fish is open daily for lunch and dinner and is located at 6118 Paseo del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92011. This restaurant is brand new, and should be open; but we recommend visiting their Facebook or website at www.topchoicefish.com just to be sure.

Tony’s Jacal is a favorite local restaurant and cantina, especially during summer and throughout horse racing season. According to the Zagat Survey, it’s “one of the most authentic north of the border (Mexican restaurants).” Bring all your friends and family and celebrate Father’s Day or 4th of July weekend with great food, tasty margaritas, and strolling mariachi music! Its reputation built over the years because the cuisine is absolutely delicious and the atmosphere and service are outstanding. For three generations, Tony’s Jacal has been serving family specialties, like their famous chile relleno, turkey tacos, turkey enchiladas, flautas and shrimp burritos. We recommend their very special
turkey tamales with a wonderful mole sauce made with black Pasilla Chiles, which you can order off the menu all-year-round. Dining, Sipping, and Drinking Bruegger’s Bagels
One of the most beloved bakeries in North County, Bruegger’s Bagels on El Camino Real in La Costa and Scripps Poway Parkway in Poway, offers delicious, piping hot, oven-baked fresh bagels every day of the year. Pick up a dozen bagels with cream cheese for Father’s Day or surprise your coworkers at work. Try a fresh hot raisin or blueberry bagel or onion bagel with cream cheese, or a Bruegger’s Breakfast Sandwich for the perfect way to start your day. Their classic breakfast sandwiches combine eggs with your choice of peppered bacon, ham, sausage or turkey sausage on a hot fresh bagel. Our all-time favorite is their classic smoked salmon and cream cheese, stacked high on a fresh onion bagel with sliced tomato, red onions, and capers. In addition to their famous bagels, breakfast sandwiches and bagel sandwiches, Bruegger’s offers a healthier “Under 500 Calorie” menu. If you are a calorie counter, try one of their Skinny Bagels. Guests can now order any of Bruegger’s 15-plus varieties “skinny,” due to
Bruegger’s unique slicing process. Instead of changing the recipe of its time-tested, New York-style bagel, Bruegger’s slices the bagels thinner using a process that removes approximately one-third of the bagel’s center but preserves its unique eggshell crust and delicious toppings. The result is a lower calorie bagel without sacrificing variety or taste. Try their Skinny Zesty Egg White Sandwich. This comes with an egg white patty on a skinny sesame bagel, with turkey sausage, Swiss cheese and sun dried tomato spread. Clip their coupon from our Coupon Pages or download from www.NorthCountySun.com/category/coupons and GET A BAGEL W/ CREAM CHEESE AND SMALL COFFEE FOR $2.49. Must present coupon. Bruegger’s operates 300 bakeries in North America with 7 bakeries in San Diego. Chicken Charlie’s Deep Fried Fantasies and New Hawaiian Menu Everyone knows the San Diego County Fair is all about music, fun, and crazy food. It’s hard to be good with the smells and tastes of barbeque, bacon, garlic, and freshly popped kettle corn, so why even try. Charlie Boghosian, owner, chef and creator of the famous Chicken Charlies FRYBQ restaurant in Clairmont, on Balboa and Genessee, runs one of the premier barbeque and deep fry trailers at the San Diego County Fair also named Chicken Charlies, and two other trailers called Pineapple Express. Charlie is always trying new recipes and combinations to come up with another deep fry winning recipe. His past deep fried creations have given him national notoriety and appearances on late night TV shows. One of Charlie’s biggest sensations is his deep-fried Oreos. Charlie remembers being in the kitchen with his brother, experimenting and making quite a mess. “We had a box of Oreo Cookies, used a really wet pancake type of batter, and drizzled a little chocolate syrup and a bit of powered sugar on top. I knew it was heavenly right away and that this was going to be huge. I introduced my deepfried Oreos the following year, and I was right! It was huge. I don’t know how many we sold or how much money we made, but the compliments and the people who kept com-
ing back for more . . . well, it was awesome.” A few years later Charlie deep-fried Kool-Aid. The deepfried Kool-Aid got him on a lot of late night TV Shows and he was trending #1 on the Internet. In 2006 his Krispy Krème Chicken Sandwich made it on the front page of the LA Times. The following year he invented the Zucchini Weenie and that got him on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian. The year after that he introduced the deep-fried Klondike Bar and that got him on the Chelsea Lately Show. This year, Charlie will be bringing back many of his past winners, such as the Krispy Kreme triple cheeseburger and his totally fried bacon wrapped pickle. He’ll also bring back his famous deep fried Oreos and some other past winners. So, what’s new? Charlie replies, “This year at the Chicken Charlie’s

trailer, we’ll be introducing Bacon Wrapped Chicken Legs, Krispy Kreme Chicken Ice Cream sandwich, and Fried Peanut Butter Meatballs. We also have a fun and exciting Hawaiian-themed menu that I’m happy to be introducing at our two Pineapple Express trailers. A new Pineapple Express Trailer will be located in the middle of the fair on the main avenue. We’ll have a more extensive Hawaiian menu this year that will include Maui Chicken, Maui Beef, Naked Shrimp, Pupu Chicken Wings, and Malasadas on a Stick.” If you want more when the fair leaves town, try Chicken Charlie’s FRYBQ restaurant at 5407 Balboa Ave, San Diego 92111. 12th Annual Gospel Festival June 23, Friday, All Day The 12th Annual Gospel Festival features a full-day schedule of uplifting gospel music on June 23, including uplifting gospel groups and more than 30 gospel artists performing on the Fair’s various stages all day long, ending with a featured grandstand stage performance. More than 25 other gospel artists will perform throughout the day. Multifaceted recording artist, singer, songwriter, minister, and psalmist, Tasha Cobbs, began her music career in Atlanta, working for her pastor father and running the family’s music ministry at Jesup New Life Ministries. She toured for three years with Pastor William H. Murphy III and his dReam Center Church of Atlanta in 2006. Her solo career began in 2010 with the album Smile, released on her own label. Three years later, EMI released her sophomore effort, Grace. In 2015 she shifted to Motown Gospel with her album One Place Live. Few entertainers today can match the unbridled energy and creative passion of Hezekiah Walker. San Diego Comic-Con International 2017 July 20 - 23 The San Diego Comic-Con International show at the San Diego Convention Center has grown so big, that the scene outside on the streets surrounding the Convention Center is almost as inspiring as the scene inside. Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction, fantasy, film, and television, Comic-Con International has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, animation, anime, manga, cartoons, movies, TV Shows, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. San Diego Comic-Con International began as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and later the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 by a group of San Diegans, which included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry Comic-Con is held at the San Diego Convention Center and is traditionally a four-day event that goes from Thursday through Sunday. A threehour preview night happens on Wednesday and is open to professionals, exhibitors, and some guests that are pre-registered for all four days. Throughout the years, ComicCon has grown to be so popular that it’s very difficult to get tickets and the Convention Center has become too small of a venue. The convention is the largest in the Americas, and fourth largest in the world after the Comiket in Japan, the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, and the Lucca Comics and Games in Italy. Along with panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, portfolio review sessions with top comic book and video game companies, and such evening events as awards ceremonies and the Masquerade, a costume contest, as well as the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, which showcases shorts and feature length movies. Traditional events include an eclectic film program, screening rooms devoted to Japanese animation, gaming, and various other programs with speakers and slide shows. Comic-Con features a large floor space for exhibitors. These include media companies such as movie studios and TV networks, as well as comic-book dealers and collectibles merchants. Attend a panel and learn from actors, designers, and pros in the industry. There’s also an autograph area, as well as the Artists’ Alley where comics artists can sign autographs and sell or do free sketches. For show lineup and panels visit www.comic-con.org.

64th Annual World Championship Over-the-Line Tournament July 8 - 9 and July 15 - 16 Every summer, men and women from all over the world flock to Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island to compete in The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club’s Over-the-Line (OTL) Tournament. This one-of-a-kind event has become more than just a local San Diego tradition. The first tournament was held more than 60 years ago and it draws impressive crowds each year. Over-the-Line participants compete in a softball-like bat and ball sport. Three-player teams are encouraged to create unique and unusual names for their teams and many teams participate while wearing wild costumes. The court is made of a rope triangle in the sand. Hits are made when a ball is hit into fair territory on the fly without being caught by fielders, when any ball is touched and dropped by fielders or when fielders cross “the line” or any of its extensions when attempting to catch a ball. Three hits in an inning scores one run, while each additional hit in that same inning scores one more run, and a home run “clears the bases.” On the first weekend of play, teams compete in three-inning games. Any team lucky enough to make it into the second weekend of play will participate in four-inning games.
The Over-the-Line Tournament is a free public event, but it is not an appropriate event for children, due to crowds and language. Games start promptly at 7:30am. There will be several stands to purchase hot food and cold non-alcoholic drinks. Parking is available adjacent to the playing area and at the corner of Seaworld Drive and Pacific Highway. Free shuttle buses will be provided for convenience. Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island is located at 1590 East Mission Bay Drive. For more information visit www. ombac.org.

Filled with inspirational melodies, and an emotionally soaring score, this all-American musical serves up an abundance of warmth, spirit and goodwill. Open your heart and visit THE SPITFIRE GRILL.
By Nagle Jackson Directed by Andrew Barnicle An uproarious comedy about a bohemian theatre troupe who find themselves performing in an Eastern European police state. However, there is more drama backstage than onstage, with romantic entanglements, political intrigue and a wildly funny climax. It’s a laugh a minute, and you’ll leave the theatre reveling in the merriment.

How the Other Half Loves
NEIL SIMON’S
Last of the Red Hot Lovers
APRIL 11 – MAY 6, 2018
By Sir Alan Ayckbourn Directed by Geoffrey Sherman Britain’s brilliant comic genius, Sir Alan Ayckbourn penned a fast‑paced and hilariously theatrical meal. A portrait of three very different marriages turns into a spirited game of mixed doubles involving sex, jealousy and ingenious stagecraft. Full of clever, razor-sharp dialogue and impeccable split‑second timing and twists, HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES promises to leave you in stitches.
SEPTEMBER 6 – OCTOBER 1, 2017
Directed by Christopher Williams Nobody does Neil Simon like North Coast Rep! Barney Cashman, middle aged, overworked, and with no experience in covert maneuvers, is bored with his bland “nice” life. He is anxiously trying to join the sexual revolution before it’s too late, and his attempts at seduction will leave you howling with laughter.
JOHN STEINBECK’S
Of Mice And Men
WEST COAST PREMIERE
MAY 30 – JUNE 24, 2018
By Florian Zeller Translated by Christopher Hampton Directed by David Ellenstein A sensation, honored with numerous awards, including a Tony nomination for Best Play. André, now 80, was once a tap dancer who lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter lives in London with her new lover? He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control. THE FATHER promises to be a profoundly moving and memorable evening in the theatre.
OCTOBER 18 – NOVEMBER 12, 2017
Directed by Richard Baird John Steinbeck’s classic drama novella-turned play OF MICE AND MEN electrified audiences in 1937. The story of George and Lenny remains just as relevant and continues to be part of our country’s collective imagination — a tale of friendship that is sustained by illusory dreams. This is must‑see theatre you cannot afford to miss.

By Steven Dietz Directed by David Ellenstein Through a swirl of nearly missed connections, THIS RANDOM WORLD follows a series of intersecting lives: A mother determined to maintain her independence, a daughter longing for adventure, and an internet prank gone awry. Warmly humorous and lyrically bittersweet, this play investigates what it is to love, to lose, and to be touched by the serendipity of life.
