CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate

Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program and immedi ately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the global ized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL certificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teach

ing assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of content ment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.”

Designed for those with minimal or no English lan guage teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional develop ment and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on hands-on training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/ TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development.

Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effec tive lesson plans and syllabi, practic ing classroom man agement strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 6-week summer course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week, and the 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week.

For more information on TESL/TEFL Certificate or other English or Cultural program services, visitwww.csusm.edu/ alci or contact us at alci@csusm.edu or (760) 750-3200.

TOWER23 Hotel on the Beach

During a recent stay at TOWER23 Hotel, the luxury, lifestyle hotel on the beach in Pacific Beach, we were treated with kindness and smiles from a wonderful hotel staff. Full disclosure, I am a big fan of Hilton hotels and compare other hotels to their standards. TOWER23 definitely met those standards and felt even more welcoming. Our room was on the third floor and had a straight-on view from my bed of the famed Crystal Pier,

sand, and surfers surfing, which made it a bit difficult to get out of bed! TOWER23 is rated a 4-Star hotel, and judging the room, for me, it must meet certain high standards, and it did. The room was very clean, unpretentious, and the car pet was like new. The king bed had a set of fitted sheets and two sets of top sheets with a white down blanket on top. The pure white feather pillows, and extremely comfortable mattress were the best. The bathroom was a nice size, with an updated, raised wash basin, a large quiet ceiling exhaust fan, and new-looking floor tile. The room was extremely quiet and had a lovely balcony view. We also enjoyed their fantastic award-winning JRDN destination restaurant with beach-walk people watching and ocean views.

Ranked among the “Top 25 Hotels on the Water in the US” by TripAdvsior, Tower23 is truly a beachfront lifestyle hotel and one of California’s most stylish and contem porary urban retreats. Deriving its name from Lifeguard Tower 23 positioned on Pacific Beach, Tower23’s distinc tive architecture and style creates a perfect haven for guests to enjoy America’s Finest City.

Tower23 Hotel is the home to the award-winning res taurant JRDN, where Executive Chef Gage’s menu of California Coastal cuisine features hand-selected ingre dients, creative sushi and an extensive menu of shareable plates and entrees. Overlooking the ocean with extraor dinary sunsets, Chef Gage’s dynamic menu offers sea sonal California cuisine from local purveyors, making

Special treats, such as pumpkin-spiced coffee, apple pie, and pumpkin-flavored beer, are also offered at the park’s many restaurants.

The 1,800acre park also features a vast accredited botanical collec tion of more than 1.3 million plant specimens, represent ing over 3,700 species. Dia de los Muertos Events

Día de los Muertos is a threeday celebration from Mexican culture that commemorates deceased loved ones with prayers and remembrances. It is also known as Day of the Dead, or All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. The holiday takes place from October 31 to November 2 each year. It is believed that the dead are able to cross the barrier of the spirit world and reunite with living loved ones during this time. Those who celebrate visit cemeteries and construct ofrendas, or altars, that are often decorated with mari golds, toys, pan de muerto (bread of dead), calaveras (sugar skulls), and photos of the deceased to awaken their soul and attract them to the offerings. Since it originally began in Mexico nearly 3,000 years ago, this spiritual holiday is being observed more frequently in the United States. (Events are subject to change)

Firenze Trattoria

Firenze is celebrating their 27th anniversary this year. They are winners of the Diners Choice Award from Open Table and have won numerous awards over the years, including Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and Best Italian by Ranch and Coast. Their longevity speaks volumes about their cuisine and service. As owner/restaurateur, Barry Podwell, explains, “We don’t have the luxury of having spectacular ocean views like so many restaurants along the coast, so our food has to be very good to keep us here all these years.” It’s true. Firenze Trattoria may not have the ocean, but it certainly does have spectacular food.

Firenze Trattoria’s authentic Italian cuisine evokes the romance and flavors of Italy’s Tuscany coast. The menu includes an extensive lineup of local favorites with too many to list; but we especially recommend their signature Lasagne

Their deli kitchens spe cialize in all natural, made-from-scratch, restaurant quality foods and a sandwich deli featuring Boar’s Head Brand deli meats and cheeses and a wide selection of homemade salads.  They offer sandwiches, salads and bakery items daily. Firenze. Every Italian restaurant boasts about their lasagna, but this one is truly special. It’s hard to see the layers of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop mari nara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a very light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely delicious. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. From Filet Mignon al Casino to Butternut Squash Ravioli, you just can’t miss.

Groovy Palooza Music Fest at Sinister Trails

October 22

Sinister Trails is a new scare attraction that runs through out October, and Groovy Palooza is a one-day music fes tival in Encinitas at Waynes World Pumpkin Patch. Kyle Rising came up with the idea after working for Wayne’s World of Pumpkins and Trees last December selling Xmas trees. Rising has a strong passion for Halloween and a background in the haunt industry as he spent many years working as a scare actor in different haunted attractions around the US. It has been a dream of Rising’s to open a haunted attraction and what better location than San Diego. Joining Rising on this endeavor is Scott Clayton, Jordan Ames, Blake Shoemaker, Gabriella Quattrone, and of course Wayne Abernathy.

Rising came up with the name Sinister Trails as a play off of his bands name Sensi Trails (a nationally touring reg gae-rock band.) The band will also be hosting a one-day multi-genre music festival held at the location on October

22, called Groovy Palooza. Groovy Palooza is a one day multi-genre music festival featuring live bands and DJs. Brace yourself for an amaz ing day of music at Groovy Palooza. This day-long event is located at Waynes World Pumpkin Patch in Encinitas with headliner Sensi Trails, including performances from Band of Gringos, Kaipora, and Hunthux.

Sinister Trails with Groovy Palooza and the gang look forward to bringing fun and excitement to North County. Tickets and info at www.sinistertrails.com or www.facebook.com/SinisterTrails.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana

I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown.

I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising perma nent porcelain crowns for $320. Her English-speaking recep tionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morn ing I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a

friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor but ton for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most.

I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was get ting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After

an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cav ity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the fill ing. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great.

Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.
