His 90-minute play is heartfelt, and deeply as he makes history come alive. Simon Wiesenthal was a Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor who became a Nazi hunter after the war. He spent

his life tracking down and gathering information on fugitive Nazi war criminals so they could be brought to trial.

Ben Butler – By Richard Strand October 20- November 14 Ben Butler is part comedy, part history and inspired by real-life figures. San Diego Repertory Theatre Mother Road October 7-31 The 20212022 season’s opening show is a sequel that extends beyond the original story of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Audience members follow the journey of Martin Jodes, a Mexican-American man and the only surviving relative of Tom Joad, as he travels back to Oklahoma to

claim his inheritance and build a better life. This captivating production is written by well-known Latinx playwright Octavio Solis, and it is directed by Sam Woodhouse, who has Oklahoma roots in his family.

She the People November 18-December 5 She the People is a bold sketch comedy show that explores what it’s really like to be a woman in the world.

Women from the world-renowned theatre troupe, The Second City, break apart misrepresentations about gender in pop culture, politics, and more. Directed by Carly Heffernan, the show has been met with favorable reviews in the East and Midwest, including Chicago, Toronto, and Washington, D.C. OCTOBER 30 – City Heights hosts a Día de los Muertos celebration from 11am to 5pm at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park. There are live performances and entertainment, face painting, and numerous altars on display. OCTOBER 30 – Encinitas Friends of the Arts presents the 7th annual Encinitas Día de los Muertos event. It takes place from 12 to 4pm at Encinitas Community Center. The celebration features art workshops and demonstrations, a low-rider car show, an art exhibit produced by local students, and plenty of delicious cuisine from food trucks. From October 28 to November 4, the community is also invited to honor loved ones by contributing tokens of remembrance to a 10-foot ofrenda in the Encinitas Library.

OCTOBER 31 – Ballet Folklórico de

Los Ángeles and Mariachi Garibadi de Jaime Cuéllar team up for the production of Ofrenda: A Día de los Muertos Celebration at Rady Shell at Jacobs Park to honor one of Mexico’s most beloved holidays. The show features traditional music and dance from various regions of Mexico, as well as from Disney’s Coco. It also pays tribute to deceased Mexican artists, including Juan Gabriel, Selena, and Pedro Infante. Visit www. theshell.org.

NOVEMBER 7 – The festive Los Muertos 5K run/walk offers participants the opportunity to remember loved ones and celebrate Day of the Dead on San Diego Bay. The course begins and ends at Ruocco Park. Face painting is available on the morning of the race, and there are live performances along the route. A runners altar honors loved ones who have passed away, and a post-event festival features mariachi, dancers, art, and delicious food.

Día de los Muertos Events Día de los Muertos is a three-day celebration from Mexican culture that commemorates deceased loved ones with prayers and remembrances. It is also known as Day of the Dead, or All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. The holiday takes place from October 31 to November 2 each year. It is believed that the dead are able to cross the barrier of the spirit world and reunite with living loved ones during this time. Those who celebrate visit cemeteries and construct ofrendas, or altars, that are often decorated with marigolds, toys, pan de muerto (bread of dead), calaveras (sugar skulls), and photos of the deceased to awaken their soul and attract them to the offerings.

Since it originally began in Mexico nearly 3,000 years ago, this spiritual holiday is being observed more frequently in the United States. (Events are subject to change) OCTOBER 10 – The Old Globe’s AXIS performing arts series once again welcomes the public to their plaza in Balboa Park for their annual Día de Muertos event. The plaza comes alive with festivities, including altars, crafts, music, and theatre performances. Tijuana Hace Teatro performs as a guest artist, and plenty of other surprises are in store. OCTOBER 16-NOVEMBER 2 – Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad once again has an elaborate ofrenda on display to honor the Carrillo family.

Bates Nut Farm Pumpkin Fields Open, September 18– October 31, 9am-5pm The Bates Nut Farm’s Giant Pumpkin Fields are open daily through October 31. In addition to their authentic pumpkin growing fields, there are tractor hayrides, a straw maze and the farm zoo. Weekends feature live entertainment, Snows Pony Rides and farm animals, barbecue and kettle corn.

Valley Center Community Yard Sale, September 18 The annual Valley Center Community Yard Sale is a don’t miss event for buyers and sellers. People from all over SoCal take part in this huge Community Yard Sale.

American Truck Historical Society Truck Show, September 19 Amazing American-made trucks adorn the fields of Bates Nut Farm. Registration $20. Check out their silent auction.

Arts and Crafts and Vintage Market October 2-3, Shop for American handmade arts and crafts on the farm. Up-cycled, recycled, restored, vintage, antique, and handmade wares will be offered with a large variety of jewelry, woodworking, candles, soaps, fine art, and more.

Scarecrow Contest, October 9 Participants design and build a scarecrow to add to the farm’s collection and exhibit at the pumpkin fields.

Individuals, groups and clubs are invited to enter; each entry receives a free jack-o-lantern pumpkin and certificate of participation. Cash prizes and gift certificates are awarded to the top entries in each category. Entries and completed registration forms can be brought to the farm from 1-5 pm on October 11 or before 10am on October 12. Judging takes place at 11am on October 12.

Friday Nights on the Farm, October 8, 15, 22, 29, 3-8pm The farm and pumpkin fields stay open late on Friday evenings so visitors can come after school or work to enjoy the festivities. There is live music from 4 to 7pm, food from What’s Cookin’ barbecue and the Valley Center Optimist Club, and all the regular pumpkin patch fun.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a camera and flashlight for flashlight tag in the straw maze.

Howl-o-ween Doggie Costume Contest and Parade, October 23 Dogs of all shapes and sizes strut their stuff while competing for prizes at this event. Registration opens at 9am, with judging and the parade at 11am.

Annual Costume Contest and Parade, October 24 People of all ages show off their Halloween costumes at this annual contest and parade. Prizes are awarded in four age categories and all participants receive a certificate of participation, Halloween treats and a tractor hayride ticket. Registration begins at 9am, with the costume parade and judging at 11am.

25th Annual Encinitas Oktoberfest

San Diego Spirits Festival

Strap on your lederhosen and hoist your steins for the 25th Annual Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Oktoberfest!

The Oktoberfest is back and takes place October 3, from 10am to 6pm, at Mountain Vista Drive and El Camino Real, in Encinitas. Encinitas’ German roots go back to one of the city’s five communities, the northeastern colony of Olivenhain, founded in 1884 by German farmers. This years exciting festivities include authentic German food, carnival rides, a German band, Gemuetlichkeit Alpine dancers, and a street craft fair with 200 vendors.

Hammerstein Musik Bavaria is a traditional German band that performs polka, tango, and the chicken dance.

They will be performing in the ceremonial parade at

12pm, then singing German songs and conducting contests on stage from 12:30 to 6pm. Under the family food and refreshment tent, there is authentic German food and beer from national and local breweries. The Keepin’ It Local Craft Beer Garden also returns this year for attendees ages 21 and older. A family fun zone offers rides and family-oriented activities as well.

La Jolla Art and Wine Festival October 9–10 After a year in quarantine, the highly regarded and (free) La Jolla Art & Wine Festival is back to the scenic streets of La Jolla with even more prestigious art, international wine, craft beer, and family fun on Saturday, October 9, and Sunday, October 10, from 10am to 6pm. With a spectacular coastline, upscale village atmosphere, and picturesque views, La Jolla is the perfect setting for the beloved and widely recognized La Jolla Art & Wine Festival. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy, including over 150 juried artists from around the globe, 3D chalk art displays, interactive art murals, nonstop live music, family art center, roving entertainment, gourmet food court, and a wine/craft beer/spirits garden featuring local brews, distilleries, and global wineries.

3-D chalk art displays and interactive art murals.

Vino connoisseurs and craft beer lovers have been known to unite at this nationally recognized destination.

The iconic wine, craft beer, and spirits garden has beverages from more than 40 local craft breweries, distilleries, and wineries offering their finest variety of regional and international flavors from Baja. A libations specialist is on hand to guide taste buds on a savory journey of some of the world’s finest libations.

The festival welcomes not only vino and art enthusiasts, but both young and old alike who are looking to channel their inner artist. The Geppetto’s Family Art Center + Lab has numerous interactive demonstrations, experiments, and arts and crafts for all ages. Visitors can paint on a car, learn about 3-D printing, and test their skills on a gymnastics obstacle course. Pets are allowed.

The Fully Expressed Foundation, will host a fundraising event in the wine and beer garden. They’ll spotlight two musical acts with drinks and food available for attendees.

All profits raised at the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival benefit underfunded programs such as art, music, science, physical education, technology, and on-site medical care at the five La Jolla public elementary, middle, and high schools. Nine Time Grammy Nominee, Dave Koz (Interview)

By Andy Lee World-renowned jazz saxophonist, Dave Koz has released a fresh new album called The Golden Hour, and is on tour with two concerts scheduled nearby at Humphreys on September 3, and at Thornton Winery on September 12. It was a pleasure to catch up with Dave and talk a bit, mostly about his new album. Here’s an excerpt from our conversation.

A: Where do you call home these days?

D: I kind of split my time between Los Angeles and a little hideaway house I have in a place called Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

It’s a very tiny magical place. It was magic for me especially during the pandemic. It’s a very creative place where I do a lot of writing, and I was there working on my latest album.

A: Regarding your new album what do you hope people will take away from it? Does it take you in any new or different directions from past projects?

D: Well, The Golden Hour is the name of the album. It’s a collaborative album with Minnesota funk guitarist Cory

Wong. Cory is a talented young guy with a young audience.

I’ve collaborated with many artists in my genre and I continue to do that, but it doesn’t necessarily move the needle bringing new people to the party as much as collaborating with someone who has a completely different audience from mine. I brought Cory into my world, and my audience has embraced him. My idea was to have his younger audience embrace this 60-year-old saxophone player. The idea is to create a subset of new fans to enjoy this music partially made up of my fans, partially made up of his fans. It’s an interesting experiment and I think it’s working. But the album just came out and we really don’t know all the answers yet. It’s been so much fun to tap into that energy…that really new energy. It’s been a shot in the arm for me creatively.

A: Who were the new musicians on the album? Did you work with anyone for the first time?

D: Yes, this is the first time I tapped into the universe of Cory Wong. Cory is a funk guitarist and that’s what he really does mostly. He’s got a lot of tools in his tool chest and he’s really an incredible soloist, rhythm gui-

tarist, and songwriter. Basically I just showed up and it was just me from my camp, and everybody else was from his camp. Corey and I did most of the songwriting, but we had some other songwriters too, including the wonderful singer, Phoebe Katis did a song on the album.

A: Do you have a favorite track on the album?

D: I’d probably say the title track of the album, The Golden Hour, is my favorite. It’s not easy for me to pick just one, but that one sums up the best of Cory and the best of me.

The album has a 5-piece horn section, and the horns were arranged by Michael Nelson who did a lot of arranging for Prince for years and years. It’s a precision horn section that’s backing me up, and I grew up loving horn sections more than anything. Tower of Power is the first album I bought with my own money. They’re my favorite group of all-time. Earth wind and Fire, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Chicago are all in my DNA. To me The Golden Hour has a feel of a Tower of Power song. It connected with me on a very visceral, esoteric level.

started as a one-day event, called San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Minicon, and was first held at the U.S. Grant Hotel.

It has become very difficult to secure tickets to ComicCon. With attendance topping 130,000 in recent years, the event has grown to include satellite locations, such as local hotels and outdoor parks, and literally spills over and throughout downtown and the harbor boardwalk area.

Along with panels, hosted by actors, designers, and celebrities; seminars and workshops with comic book professionals, there are previews of upcoming feature films, a costume contest, and the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival. Traditional events include an eclectic film program, screening rooms devoted to Japanese anime, gaming, and programs with speakers and slide shows. Comic-Con also features floor space for movie studios and TV networks, comic book dealers, and collectibles merchants.

Oceanside Harbor once again sets the scene for its annual Oceanside Harbor Days event. The event features arts and crafts exhibits, food, and fun activities for the entire family. Komen San Diego Events 10/1 Dine Out for the Cure– The community is invited to visit participating restaurants, bakeries, and coffee houses around the county to help raise funds for Komen San Diego. Each participating eatery donates a portion of their proceeds for the day to aid the fight against breast cancer.

10/9 Row for the Cure–San Diego Crew Classic hosts the 20th annual Row for the Cure on October 9. The fundraiser

draws rowers from all over the southwestern United States, as they compete in a timed regatta on Mission Bay. Boats launch from Ski Beach. Entry fees and donations benefit Komen San Diego.

10/22-24 Standup for the Cure–This three-day event is designed to connect Komen San Diego supporters and raise funds for the cause through a variety of weekend activities. Attendees can enjoy paddleboarding, workout classes, and conversations over coffee and smoothies.

11/7 More Than Pink Walk–Breast cancers survivors, fighters, and supporters gather in Balboa Park to walk and raise funds to end breast cancer. The opening ceremony

begins at 7:30am and the walk kicks off at 8am. Supporters can also choose to participate in a digital experience, which includes interactive activities and the option to walk from one’s own neighborhood.

11/19-21 San Diego 3-Day Walk–Participants spend the weekend walking along San Diego’s coastline to raise funds in support of breast cancer awareness.

Hansen – The Adventures of a Surfer, Skydiver, Team Roper, Entrepreneur Book written by Don Hansen with Chris Ahrens

By Andy Lee Local surfing legend and owner of San Diego’s largest surfboard store, Don Hansen, tells his amazing story in his new book, Hansen. He eloquently reflects on what it was like back in the 60s and 70s, the good times and hard times, and how he approached and conquered the world of surfing, snow skiing, skydiving, roping, and retail. Hansen talks about his own trials and tribulations and the long bumpy ride to popularize the surfing culture, including his relationships with other world famous surfers and adventure sports legends back in the day and through the years.

He is truly a legend in the surfing world, but also in many other action sports. CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language.

The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis on handson training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample

opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation.

The 6-week summer course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week, and the 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana

By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. I recently cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown.

I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her Englishspeaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it

a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office.

There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me.

I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most.

I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and

everyone there spoke perfect English and were very professional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work.

They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown.

She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). I saved over $1,000 and the experience was great. Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165.
