Dance Into The Holiday Spirit with An Irish Christmas December 19, 2:30pm An award-winning cast of Irish dancers takes to the stage at Balboa Theatre in a lively performance of An Irish Christmas at 2:30pm on December 19. Led by World Champion Tyler Schwartz, the production takes audience members on a journey through Christmas in Ireland with superb dancing, singing, and traditional Irish music of the holiday season. Adding to the fun is principal dancer Emily MacConnell (“Dance Masters,” “Rockin’ Road to Dublin,” “Magic of the Dance,” Celtic Fyre,” and “Celtic Wings”); Colm Alba and the Kerry Dance Troupe; the Kerry Voice Squad, singing favorite holiday standards, such as “12 Days of Christmas,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Silent Night”; and the Kerry Traditional Orchestra, led by Jesse Langen. They are joined by special San Diego guests Sarah Dillon and Elizabeth Gerheardt from Clan Rince School of Irish

Dance. Irish traditions woven into the performance include buttermaking, chasing the wren on St. Stephen’s Day, and drawing down the half door, which makes for an awe-inspiring dance display. The production, which has been shown on PBS, showcases Ireland at its best—mesmerizing, riveting, mystical, joyful, and modern. An Irish Christmas is not to be missed. Families are invited to get into the holiday spirit by spending an afternoon immersed in dance, song, music, laughter, and sheer joy. There is also an Irish Christmas shop that is open during the performance, offering the perfect opportunity to shop for final gifts. Tickets for An Irish Christmas start at $33.50 and can be purchased online at www.sandiegotheatres.org/event/2021/12/irish-christmas. Balboa Theatre is located at 868 Fourth Avenue, San Diego. For tour details, online shopping, and more information about An Irish Christmas, visit www. kerryirishproductions.com.

Welcome Winter With a Visit to San Diego Zoo’s Polar Bears By Hayley Ulle For the resident bears at San Diego Zoo’s Conrad Prebys Polar Bear Plunge, every day is an Arctic summer day. Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are one of the best-known animal species on the planet, but very few people have the opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. Although they are the top predator in the Arctic, they are classified as a threatened species. A few of these bears have found a home at the San Diego Zoo, where guests can learn to appreciate them and discover some elements of their natural habitat. Polar bears possess adaptations for an almost exclusively carnivorous diet, a semi-aquatic lifestyle, and the largest home range of any terrestrial mammal. They have a layer of blubber that is two to four inches thick, which helps to insulate them against the cold, acts as a nutritional reserve when food cannot be found, and makes them more buoyant in water. Their fur consists of a dense undercoat protected by an outer coat of long guard hairs that stick together when wet, forming a waterproof barrier to keep cold water off their skin. Their hair is made of clear, hollow tubes filled with air, and their skin is black, which better absorbs solar warmth. Life in the tundra climate requires a high-calorie diet, and ringed seals are rich in fat. Polar bears must wait for the sea to freeze before they can begin hunting in autumn, as they rely on Arctic sea ice as a platform from which to hunt the seals.

They lie in wait at the seals’ breathing holes for hours or even days. With feet the size of frying pans and coarse fur between their footpads, the bears are able to maintain traction on ice. On average, they require 47 seals each year to get through the summer months when they cannot hunt. They can eat 40 pounds of food in one sitting. Climate change affects when the Artic seas freeze, and as the freeze comes later and later each year, the bears must go hungry for a longer period of time. Polar bears face losing 2.2 pounds of body weight per day for several months each year. The San Diego Zoo promotes conservation of these Arctic animals and offers a rare chance to see them up close and in-person. At the Conrad Prebys Polar Bear Plunge, guests can observe the bears swimming in a pool that mimics the icy Arctic seas from an underwater viewing room. The bears are known to swim right up to the glass to check out their human audience. For those at home, the Zoo has a live Polar Bear Cam, which offers another chance to see the playful personalities of these magnificent creatures. The bears can be seen at https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/cams/polar-cam. San Diego Zoo is located at 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego. For more information, visit www.sandiegozoo.org.

Balboa Park December Nights December 3-5, 11am-10pm December Nights has been a San Diego tradition at Balboa Park for more than 40 years. This year, out of an abundance of caution, the tradition returns to the park as an expanded version of last year’s drive-through event, “Taste of December Nights.” It takes place over three days, from December 3 to 5. There are food vendors and trucks serving up delicious cuisine at this year’s drive-through event. All attendees must remain in their cars. Balboa Park is located at 1549 El Prado, San Diego. For more information, visit www.sandiego.gov/december-nights.

Save Hundreds or Thousands of Dollars By Having Dental Work Done In Tijuana By Andy Lee I have a very good dental plan, but it doesn’t cover gums, molar crowns, some root canals, bridges, etc. A couple of years ago, I cracked the porcelain of a 15-year old crown and it wasn’t covered under my dental insurance. I called a few San Diego dental offices and was quoted between $1,100–$1,500 for a porcelain over metal crown. I went online to look at dentist reviews, and found a dentist in Tijuana, Shirley Baker, D.D.S. She was advertising permanent porcelain crowns for $320. Her English-speaking receptionist convinced me that I should give it a try. The next morning I drove to the border and parked my car on the U.S. side and walked across. It’s a bit of a walk and you should bring a

friend. The dental office had a yellow taxi waiting for me (no charge). The driver spoke perfect English and in 5 minutes we arrived at the office. There was a coffee shop on the first floor lobby. I bought a latte. The elevator attendant opened the elevator door and used her card and pushed the 3rd floor button for me. I opened the door and the office looked just as nice as any dental office in the U.S. and better than most. I filled out a detailed dental history form. There was a woman sitting next to me and told me her husband was getting a root canal and that they have been coming here for six years. They too live in San Diego. Dr. Baker and everyone there spoke perfect English and were very profes-

sional. After an X-ray the doctor and hygienist went to work. They gave me an iPod to listen to music. After removing the cracked crown she took another X-ray because she found a large cavity below the gum line under the old crown. She proceeded to remove the decay, filled the cavity, took an impression for a new crown, and gave me a temporary crown. I returned in 10 days for the permanent crown, and it looks more natural than my other two crowns. Total cost was $320 plus $50 for the filling. I saved over $1,000. A taxi drove me back to the border (no charge). Here is Dr. Shirley Baker’s number (619) 270-2165. Please let them know you read about this in the North County Sun.

Tony’s Jacal Celebrating their 75th Anniversary this year, we highly recommend making your lunch, dinner, and holiday reservations as early as possible. Tony’s Jacal is one of the most famous and historic Mexican restaurants and cantinas in San Diego. Located in Solana Beach, Tony’s Jacal is a historic San Diego landmark, which opened its doors in 1946 as a small neighborhood house where neighbors would stop by for a delicious meal. If you’re one of the lucky ones who grew up anywhere in San Diego North County, you know how great Tony’s is and probably are a frequent guest. According to Zagat, “Tony’s Jacal is one of the most authentic north of the border Mexican restaurants.” Taste the flavors of old Mexico and enjoy the history of one of the first Mexican restaurants in San Diego. For three generations, Tony’s Jacal has been serving family specialties, like their famous chile relleno, turkey

tacos, turkey enchiladas, flautas and shrimp burritos. We recommend their very special turkey tamales with a wonderful mole sauce made with black Pasilla Chiles, which you can order off the menu all-year-round. Also, try Tony’s new fajita burrito. It’s big, fresh, and very tasty! Tony’s Jacal has a beautiful floral outdoor garden patio, and expanded patio seating. Looking for a New Career? CSUSM Offers Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate In December 2015, Scott Havenor was laid off from a 26-year career in the software business. Looking to start a new chapter, he learned about the Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign Language (TESL/ TEFL) certificate at CSUSM. Havenor completed the program in May 2017 and immediately saw the value of his new certificate. He connected with a school in Ukraine that teaches American English to local corporations so they can integrate into the globalized economy. The job application required a TESL/TEFL certificate and the interview included preparing a sample lesson, so Havenor selected a lesson he had created as part of the certificate program. He received a swift offer and six weeks after earning his TESL/TEFL cerAMERICAN LANGUAGE & CULTURE INSTITUTE N O R T H

tificate, Havenor was heading to Dnipro, Ukraine, for a four-month teaching assignment. “I was thinking I was really retired,” he says. “This program has validated my professional life since being laid off and has given me a sense of contentment that I was missing. It was the bridge that has enabled this new life I am now going to have.” Designed for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the U.S. (ESL), this 120-hour certificate focuses on best practices in methods, materials and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language. The program provides professional development and employment guidance with a strong emphasis

on hands-on training and practice with English-language learners in a university setting. Sessions are taught by master teachers with extensive experience in TESL/TEFL, teacher training, and curriculum development. Participants receive ample opportunities for developing effective lesson plans and syllabi, practicing classroom management strategies, peer-teaching, and classroom facilitation. The 15-week spring course is offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 hours per week, and the 6-week summer intensive course runs Monday through Friday on the CSUSM campus for a total of 20 hours per week. O’side Turkey Trot November 25 For 16 years, the O’side Turkey Trot has been a favorite North County tradition on Thanksgiving morning. It has been recognized as one of the top trots by “Runner’s World Magazine” and the “Los Angeles Times.” It is also one of the largest teams competitions. This year’s presenting sponsors are Tri-City Medical Center and My Brighter Side, a boutique for women with cancer. The annual race benefits schools and nonprofits that serve Oceanside residents. The Turkey Trot offers many different race options for the entire family, including 1/5-mile, 1-mile, 5-mile and 5K course options. The trot has one of the most beautiful courses in the country, with at least 2 miles of ocean views and crashing waves. Runners leave the Oceanside Civic Center and follow a downhill route that finishes near Oceanside Pier. There

is live entertainment on the course. Runners are encouraged to participate in a costume contest at 9:45am on the amphitheater’s main stage. All participants receive a finishers medal, a T-shirt, a certificate, free digital photos, a bib number with timing, and virtual coupons. Awards are presented by age group in two categories—residents of Oceanside and non-residents. A convenient beachside packet pick-up expo takes place at the Jr. Seau Beach Community Center on November 23 and 24. Registration is also available online and on the day of the event, beginning at 6am in the Oceanside Civic Center parking lot. Oceanside Civic Center is located at 300 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside. For registration and more information, visit www.osideturkeytrot.com. Photos courtesy of Rich Cruse.

San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) Holiday Bowl December 28, 5pm The winners of two of college football’s most competitive conferences go head-to-head in the annual San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) Holiday Bowl on December 28. There are many “firsts” for the decades-old annual game this year. For the first time, the Holiday Bowl debuts a new Power-5 matchup of top teams from the Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). As SDCCU Stadium has been dismantled to begin construction on San Diego State University’s new football stadium, the game moves to Petco Park this year as well. It is also the first time that it will air on broadcast television since its inception in 1978. The game starts at 5pm. Holiday Bowl festivities begin on December 27, with

the Bowl Bash at 5pm in the Gaslamp District. The Holiday Bowl 5K Run/Walk along North Harbor Drive kicks off game day at 9:45am, followed by the Holiday Bowl Parade through the bayside streets of downtown San Diego at 10am. More than 100,000 street-side spectators and a nationwide TV audience will enjoy floats, marching bands, drill teams, and a procession of enormous balloons. Petco Park is located at 100 Park Blvd., San Diego. For more information, visit www.holidaybowl.com.

Original Pancake House The Original Pancake House is a third generation restaurant that originated in Portland, Oregon. Their signature breakfast dishes include The Dutch Baby, Mushroom Omelet with mushroom sherry sauce, and their Apple Pancakes. They’ve been the locals’ choice for the ultimate breakfast in San Diego ever since they opened their first franchise in San Diego in 1979. They are located in Encinitas, Vista, San Diego, Kearney Mesa, Poway and Temecula. Their world famous original recipes are inspired from all over the world, and incorporate the very finest ingredients, such as USDA AA grade butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and their own homemade

Try the Original Pancake House’s special thick sliced bacon and their amazing omelets. We highly recommend their gourmet cherry Kijafa crepes. Firenze Trattoria Firenze is celebrating their 26th anniversary this year. They are winners of the Diners Choice Award from Open Table and have won numerous awards over the years, including Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and Best Italian by Ranch and Coast. Their longevity speaks volumes about their cuisine and service. As owner/restaurateur, Barry Podwell, explains, “We don’t have the luxury of having spectacular ocean views like so many restaurants along the coast, so our food has to be very good to keep us here all these years.” It’s true. Firenze Trattoria may not have the ocean, but it certainly does have spectacular food. Firenze Trattoria’s authentic Italian cuisine evokes the romance and flavors of Italy’s Tuscany coast. The menu includes an extensive lineup of local favorites with too many to list; but we especially recommend their signature Lasagne Firenze. Every Italian

restaurant boasts about their lasagna, but this one is truly special. It’s hard to see the layers of ricotta cheese, a mixture of beef, chicken, and sausage, fresh Roma tomato, mushroom, and parmesan atop marinara sauce, because it’s completely covered with a very light and creamy béchamel sauce. It’s absolutely delicious. Other recommended dishes include: Calamari Fritti Antipasti, with lightly battered, deep fried calamari served with piquant marinara sauce; Risotto Portofino, grilled jumbo shrimp served with artichoke hearts and asparagus, surrounding a center mound of risotto. From Filet Mignon al Casino to Butternut Squash Ravioli, you just can’t miss. Happy Hour is 4-6:30pm Mon-Sun with a popular discounted bar menu for food, wine, cocktails, and beer. Mondays offer 1/2 off bottles of wine. They will be open NYE and will be lively. Please call ahead to confirm. Firenze Trattoria is located at 162

Champagne French Bakery Café Champagne has been serving a fusion of modern and traditional French cuisine since 1987 and has locations in Del Mar Highlands, Encinitas, and Carmel Mountain. Using local, fresh ingredients, and crafting authentic cuisine has contributed to their success and allows them to offer a growing number of quality French dishes, and baked goods for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a variety of traditional desserts. They have an assortment of coffees, teas, breads, pastries, cakes, tarts, cookies, sandwiches, salads and soups. They are famous for their pastries, including a variety of croissants, custard brioche, cinnamon roll, raisin scone (one of our favorites), and orange cranberry muffin. Desserts include such delights as: Napoleon, which is a crispy puffed pastry layered with vanilla

cream and topped with fondant and chocolate; crème brulee; vanilla éclair; bread pudding; and chocolate dipped strawberries. They also serve cakes, tarts, and cookies. One of our favorites is their raspberry cookie, which is two soft cookies sandwiched with raspberry preserves and half is dipped in dark chocolate.
